Greek Column by Voula Michail Kitsios Announcements Μετέωρα Τα Μετέωρα είναι σίγουρα μια από τις πιο όμορφες και εντυπωσιακές περιοχές που μπορεί να επισκεφτεί κανείς στην Ηπειρωτική Ελλάδα. Βρίσκονται στην Θεσσαλία ενώ απέχουν περίπου 215 χλμ από την πόλη της Θεσσαλονίκης. Όπως υποδηλώνει ξεκάθαρα και το όνομα της περιοχής που μεταφράζεται σε τόπο «αιωρούμενο μεταξύ γης και ουρανού», μπορούμε να καταλάβουμε και τον λόγο που τα παλιά βυζαντινά μοναστήρια, αυτές οι πανέμορφες δημιουργίες μαζί με το φυσικό τοπίο που τις περιβάλλει, είναι πραγματικά μοναδικές. Μαγευτικά τοπία και ιστορικά μοναστήρια Η ιστορία τους μας οδηγεί πίσω στον 11ο αιώνα όταν η αναβίωση των μοναχικών και ασκητικών ιδεωδών των πρώιμων χρόνων του χριστιανισμού οδήγησε στον εποικισμό της περιοχής, κάτι που οδήγησε τον 14ο μχ αιώνα στην εντατική κατασκευή ένος αριθμού μοναστηριών κάτω από εξαιρετικά αντίξοες συνθήκες. Με αυτό τον τρόπο με το πέρασμα του χρόνου δημιουργήθηκε η δεύτερη πιο σημαντική μοναστική κοινότητα στην Ελλάδα ύστερα από το Άγιο Όρος. Κάποια από αυτά μάλιστα παραμένουν ενεργά ακόμη και σήμερα, ενώ το πιο σημαντικό από όλα, η Ιερά Μονή του Μεγάλου Μετεώρου κτισμένη τον 13ο αιώνα μχ χρησιμοποιείται ως μουσείο. Τα πολύχρωμα ψηφιδωτά και οι μοναδικές τοιχογραφίες που συναντάμε σε πολλές από τις μονές αποτελούν ένα εξαιρετικό δείγμα Μεταβυζαντινής τέχνης ενώ σημαδεύουν και χαρακτηρίζουν το πέρασμα σε μια νέα εποχή μεταξύ του 15ου και 16ου αιώνα μχ. Η θέα από τα μοναστήρια που βρίσκονται στις κορυφές των τεράστιων βράχων είναι εκπληκτική και σίγουρα θα εντυπωσιάσει! Από το 1988 ολόκληρη η περιοχή συμπεριλαμβάνεται στον κατάλογο των μνημείων παγκόσμιας πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς της UNESCO. June s Prosforo Is donated by Athena Sehremelis. Thank you. June has arrived and graduations, picnics and vacations are being planned. That also means for Philoptochos it's festival baking time. If you've never had a chance to bake any of the delightful Greek pastries, now is your chance. Come and join us in the fun and make new friends in our kitchen. Lunch will be provided. Be a part of the Philoptochos festival baking team. If you have any questions on times and dates, the schedule is posted on the last page or, contact Voula at the church office at 562-494-8929. The ASSUMPTION FAMILY SUMMER BACKPACK PROJECT is on its way! This year Philoptochos and other ministries of the church are helping to create a future for children in need. What do you need to do; Purchase a backpack and/or supplies and bring it to church on Sunday or leave it with Voula any other day. That's it! Don't have time to shop? No need to worry. $30 will help us purchase what is needed. If you are planning to shop, here's what is needed: Backpack, Loose-leaf paper (college & wide rule), Binders, spiral notebooks, folders, pencils & sharpeners, pencils bags, erasers, pens, rulers, small dictionary, colored chalk, glue sticks, colored pencils, markers, scissors, highlighters, index cards. The project will run through September...Backpacks are given to FOR THE CHILD a Long Beach nonprofit organization with over 40 years of providing both comprehensive child abuse treatment and family focused mental health care, counseling, and therapy to strengthen families and provide the tools of healing to children. This July, Clergy Laity/Philoptochos conference will be held in Nashville. One of our major projects this year will be focusing on FEEDING CHILDREN EVE- RYWHERE! We are fortunate to be sending representatives from both our chapter and also Long Beach Philoptochos has Metropolis Board members that will be attending. More will be reported on the conference in the July article. The summer General Philoptochos meeting will be August 7 th. Guest speaker to be announced. We will also be preparing for the Feast Day of our church. Have a fantastic summer!
