Telephone survey characteristics Sample size: 602 people Coverage: National covering all cities of Cyprus, both urban and rural areas, men and women, 18 years and older Methodology: Multi-stage stratified random sampling Method of data collection: Telephone interviews conducted at the Call Centre of RAI Consultants Dates of data collection: 27-29 November 2013 Some of the answers to specific questions are compared with the results of the two previous surveys conducted in June 2011 and November 2012.
Which is the main environmental problem of Cyprus? Water/garbage followed by forest destruction were also ranked as the top 2 answers in the online survey. Positive outcome compared to 2012: increase from to 14% for the answer biodiversity loss. In the online survey around 18% answered desertification.
What is biodiversity? Positive increase in the percentage of people who answered correctly! Decrease in the number that don t know the correct answer. Negative result: also increase in the wrong answer provided (from 14% in 2011 increase to in 2013): this network aims to ban all kinds of activities, wrong impression. In the online survey (chart on the right): 76% answered correctly. Only 5% gave the wrong answer about the strict banned activities.

There was a significant increase from 23% to 33% from 2011 to 2013. Positive that we had a decreased number of people that said that Europe forbids us this act (from 31% to 21%). Unfortunately at the same time the percentage of people who gave the wrong answer that blackcaps is an endangered species remains stable at 32%. In the Online survey (chart on the right):27% answered correctly. 23% believe that environmentalists are extreme.

Online survey (chart on the right): Only 63% say they never eat blackcaps. 11% say they eat more than 10 times per year and another between 2-5 times per year. More honest answers through the online survey.

Unfortunately we have an important increase in the number of people who admit that they consume them at restaurants. Same percentage levels for people who answered that they trap the birds themselves. Online survey (chart on the right): 31% say that they consume them at friends/relatives/houses, 15% that they consume them at restaurants, 12% that they trap the birds themselves.

Online survey (chart on the right): 9 answered correctly. Smaller percentages of wrong answers in the online survey.

Same answers as last year. Online survey (chart on the right): 36% answered correctly and 13% answered that they would buy another turtle so that it is not alone. However, 33% gave the wrong answer, that they would leave the turtle out in the nature.
