ANNUNCIATION GREEK ORTHODOX CATHEDRAL Norfolk, VA Rev. Presbyter George Bessinas, M.Div., Dean Rev. Protopresbyter Constantine Rogakos, Ph. D., Associate SUNDAY BULLETIN AND WEEKLY NEWS Feast of SS. Athanasios and Cyril, Patriarchs of Alexandria 12th Sunday of Luke Sunday, January 18, 2015
Sunday, January 18, 2015 Orthros (Matins): Divine Liturgy (of St. John Chrysostom) 8:45 AM 10:00 AM On January 18, we commemorate our fathers among the Saints Athanasios and Cyril, Patriarchs of Alexandria; the holy Martyr Theodoula; the holy Martyr Xenia died by fire. Resurrectional APOLYTIKION Grave Mode By means of Your Cross, O Lord, You abolished death. To the robber You opened Paradise. The lamentation of the myrrhbearing women You transformed, and You gave Your Apostles the order to proclaim to all that You had risen, O Christ our God, and granted the world Your great mercy. APOLYTIKION for SS. Athanasios and Cyril, Patriarchs of Alexandria Having shone with deeds of Orthodoxy and extinguished all impious doctrines, you have rightly won the trophies and victory. Since you enriched all the world with correct belief, greatly adorning the Church with your words and deeds, you therefore have worthily found Christ God, who by your prayers grants to all the great mercy. APOLYTIKION of the Annunciation Today is the beginning of our salvation, The revelation of the eternal mystery! The Son of God becomes the Son of the Virgin. As Gabriel announces the coming of Grace. Together with him let us cry to the Theotokos: Rejoice, O Full of Grace, The Lord is with You! KONTAKION of the Presentation of the Lord You sanctified the virginal womb by Your birth, O Lord, and blessed the hands of Symeon fittingly, O Christ God; and even now You came and saved us. Now, give peace to our Nation in time of war, and empower our Leaders, so loved by You, the only one who loves humanity.
Prokeimenon: Blessed are You, O Lord God of our fathers, for You are praiseworthy and exalted beyond measure unto the ages. Mode 4 Prayer of Azariah Brethren, remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God; consider the outcome of their lives, and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and for ever. Do not be led away by diverse and strange teachings; for it is well that the heart be strengthened by grace, not by foods, which have not benefited their adherents. We have an altar from which those who serve the tent have no right to eat. For the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest as a sacrifice for sin are burned outside the camp. So Jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the people through his own blood. Therefore let us go forth to him outside the camp and bear the abuse he endured. For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city which is to come. Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. EPISTLE READING St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 13:7-16
THE GOSPEL READING Gospel of Luke 17:12-19 At that time, as Jesus entered a village, He was met by ten lepers, who stood at a distance and lifted up their voices and said: "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us." When He saw them He said to them, "Go and show yourselves to the priests." And as they went they were cleansed. Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; and he fell on his face at Jesus's feet, giving Him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan. Then said Jesus: "Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?" And He said to him: "Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well."

Update Thank you for your generosity during the 2014 stewardship campaign! You have put your money where your heart is. Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:19-21 2014 Stewardship Contributions are $383,709.22. This is a new Cathedral record. Our goal continues to be $400,000; we fell short of this goal by $16,291. This is really an easy goal to meet. During 2014, our Cathedral was blessed with 320 stewardship families. If only 100 families gave $162.91 more, then we would reach $400.000. This is $3.12 more each week. If 200 families gave $81.46 more, then we would reach $400,000. This is $1.57 more each week. So, why is $400,000 so important? The Cathedral 2015 operating budget is approximately $675,000. Stewardship of $400,000 is almost 60% of our budget. It is the first step towards diminishing our reliance on the festival to meet the operating needs of our Cathedral. What could we do with a festival profit of $300,000, if we didn t have to devote $210,000 to meet the Cathedral s operating deficit?
