Fr. Nicholas M. Kastanas Rev. Dn. Markos Nickolas Publication is the first of each month. Twelve issues are published yearly. Deadline for notices is the 15 th of the prior month. Saint Athanasius the Great is a parish under the spiritual and ecclesial oversight of His Eminence Metropolitan Methodios of the Metropolis of Boston of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America under the jurisdiction of The Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. The St. Athanasius the Great Greek Orthodox Church in Arlington, Massachusetts strives to be a living witness of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Our mission as a Parish is to "Practice Hospitality" (Romans 12:13), as St. Paul so exhorts... Thus, it is our rich blessing to strive and bring the Light of Christ to all of God's people, through Orthodox Christian tradition, education, and philanthropy. We seek to serve the spiritual needs of our faithful parishioners through the sacramental life of the Church. By means of outreach and faith in God, we continue our growth as a living Church by inviting others into the Orthodox faith through Baptism and/or Chrismation, and educating them through the establishment of our Christian ministries, programs, schools, and philanthropic activities. "Blessed are the Peacemakers... Matthew 5:9 We live in such an incredible world! New technological and medical advances impact our life every moment... Thanks be to God! As we cross the threshold of yet another Church year (September 1 st ), we must confess, honestly, that we, individually, and, as a society, have made very little progress in working to become peacemakers. Confrontation, confrontation, confrontation... There's way too much violence in our country and in the world because of the lack of respect for humanity, out of control hate, religious differences, politics, and, most especially, the absence of inner peace. Look at yourself in the mirror and ask the question: Are you a peacemaker or a war monger? (not just some of time..all of the time) There are so many references for peace in our Divine Liturgy. The first words of Christ when he appeared to his disciples was peace unto you. We can, and we must do a better job in advocating for peacefulness, justice, and tranquility. It all begins with prayer and supplication by asking the Good Lord for His Peace in every way, and in every place. Let us rededicate our efforts to be more peaceful by asking our Good and Merciful Lord to help us with our efforts! Let us constantly pray for peace in a troubled world. Happy New Church Year!(September 1st) Me agape, Fr. Kastanas Psalm 46 Good News Translation (GNT) God Is with Us 46 God is our shelter and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. 2 So we will not be afraid, even if the earth is shaken and mountains fall into the ocean depths; 3 even if the seas roar and rage, and the hills are shaken by the violence. 4 There is a river that brings joy to the city of God, to the sacred house of the Most High. 5 God is in that city, and it will never be destroyed; at early dawn he will come to its aid. 6 Nations are terrified, kingdoms are shaken; God thunders, and the earth dissolves. 7 The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. 8 Come and see what the Lord has done. See what amazing things he has done on earth. 9 He stops wars all over the world; he breaks bows, destroys spears, and sets shields on fire. 10 Stop fighting, he says, and know that I am God, supreme among the nations, supreme over the world. 11 The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.

GREEK ORTHODOX ARCHDIOCESE OF AMERICA 8-10 East 79th St. New York, NY 10075-0106 * Tel: (212) 570-3530 Fax: (212) 774-0237 www.goarch.org - Email: communications@goarch.org Contact: PRESS OFFICE Stavros Papagermanos pressoffice@goarch.org Protocol No. 143/15 News Release September 1, 2015 Beginning of the Ecclesiastical Year Day for the Protection of our Natural Environment To the Most Reverend Hierarchs, the Reverend Priests and Deacons, the Monks and Nuns, the Presidents and Members of the Parish Councils of the Greek Orthodox Communities, the Distinguished Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, the Day, Afternoon, and Church Schools, the Philoptochos Sisterhoods, the Youth, the Hellenic Organizations, and the entire Greek Orthodox Family in America Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ, On this Feast of the Indiction which marks the beginning of the New Ecclesiastical Year, we are led by our beloved Ecumencial Patriarchate in observing the Day for the Protection of our Natural Environment. The relationship of our commemoration and observance is significant due to the changing of the seasons, our agrarian heritage in relation to marking time, and the strong foundations of our worship and theology in the relationship of our Creator to His creation. We affirm this in the hymns of this day as we sing, In wisdom You have wrought all things and have established proper times and seasons for our lives (Praises of Orthros), and Author and head of all creation, under whose power lie all times and seasons, O compassionate Lord: crown the cycle of this year with Your generous blessings (Exapostilarion of Orthros).

It is in the divine act of our creation that our relationship to the created order is revealed. Through the power and grace of the Creator bringing all things into existence and in His creation of humankind in His image, we see our unique role as stewards of all that God has made. As Adam and Eve were created and placed in the garden to tend and keep it (Genesis 2:15), we have the responsibility to care for and protect His creation. As man and woman were directed by God to be fruitful and multiply and to have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth (Genesis 1:28), we have the authority to manage the created order prayerfully and respectfully to sustain life and to address human and environmental needs. We must also affirm in our relationship with God that through His wisdom and our creative potential, we are able to sustain and protect the natural environment while addressing the environmental challenges and stresses of technological innovation, economic forces, population growth, and natural disasters. Created in God s image as stewards of the natural order, we are witnesses of the goodness of creation. He saw that all He created was very good (Genesis 1:31), and He established and sanctified time through the order and process of creation (Genesis 2:3). Our awareness of this inherent goodness in all that God has made is known first in our relationship with Him. We also marvel at the beauty, complexity, and function of creation, recognizing divine origin, purpose, and goodness. We proclaim the Gospel, guiding all to the revelation of God s grace through Christ. We offer a ministry of hope and transformation, as we help others find healing, assurance, and salvation in Him. Through the prayers and liturgical life of the Church, we journey through each day, each week, the full cycle of the year and our lives toward the glorious fulfillment of time and eternal life in communion with God. As we commemorate this Feast may we commit our time to the feasts and observances of the Church, to a daily life of prayer and communion with God, and to sustaining our spiritual lives through the disciplines of our faith. May we also affirm that we are created and called as stewards of the created order. From our relationship and communion with God, may we offer a witness of the goodness of His creation and the sanctity of life. With paternal love in Christ, DEMETRIOS Archbishop of America

Sunday Catechetical School The Catechetical Sunday School program this year commences on Sunday September 13th. September is always an exciting month for parents, students and teachers alike. We are starting on a new year, full of promise to learn, to succeed, to see our children and our students grow in wisdom, character and talent. It s also an anxious time as our little ones first enter public school or our older ones go off to college. Will they make friends? Will they get along with the teacher? Will they be safe away from us? What decisions will they make now that they are out of our direct influence and control? Yet, as we all ponder these exciting but anxious times, I want you to think of the following passage from St. John s Gospel. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you John 15:7 These lines are from St. John s 15th chapter and so tenderly reveal Christ s love for each one of us. They are Jesus own words to His disciples chosen to give them courage as they were ready to face some of the darkest hours of His earthly ministry starting with His arrest and ending with His death on the cross. We also hear the same lines on Holy Thursday as we are also gathering to witness His sacrifice on the Cross for us. Naturally we all want to have the incredible power to ask for anything and have it given to us, but let us not forget the opening premise of the sentence If you remain in me and my words remain in you that is the key to this incredible power. Our Catechetical Sunday school offers a rich and faith based teaching program for children of all ages. We welcome children as young as 4 years old (for our Pre-K class) and as old as high-school seniors (as teaching assistants). Our goal is to give our children and their families the opportunity to experience Christ through His words and teachings, to give glory to him through the Divine Liturgy, and to receive the seeds of our Orthodox Christian faith and Holy Tradition in a loving and supporting learning environment. Each year over 20 dedicated professional adults offer much time and effort in the Catechetical Sunday school ministry. But we can t do it without a strong partnership with each one of you, the parents. You are an integral part of any teaching activity and that goes without saying for our Catechetical program as well. It is surprising, and sometimes frightening, to realize what a short time frame we have to influence the character and lives of our children. We pray that for the upcoming year each of us makes a renewed commitment to make the Christian education of our children a priority. Let s attend with them the Divine Liturgy and help them participate (remember children don t drive!) in the Catechetical Sunday school activities. We will then know that we ve done the best we could to keep Christ and His words remaining in them. Sunday school starts at 10 am on Sunday mornings with attendance to the Divine Liturgy, and an engaging children s sermon. Music and classroom teaching and activities follow. Families with students registered in the last academic year should have received an invitation to register online. If your child is entering Catechetical School for the first time this year visit http://tinyurl.com/cssreg2016 to register online. We will also hold a registration session, in the Church hall on Sunday September 13th. The first Sunday school staff meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, September 8th at 7:00 pm..
