August 2016 Dear Plutarchos Families, The intercessions of our patron Saint Spyridon have brought us to the doorstep of the 100th Anniversary Year of our Plutarchos Greek School. Over this past century, our Greek School Plutarchos has strived to instill in our children the love and knowledge for their Greek Orthodox Heritage and roots. The St. Spyridon Greek School program has been blessed with many individuals that dedicate their precious time and effort to help make our School a growing, effective and productive Greek School. Our dedicated teachers, parents and volunteers place the Greek Education program as a top priority in the many obligations and responsibilities that families have today. Greek School is held on Mondays and Fridays from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and will begin on Monday, September 12 th at 4:30 p.m. with the Agiasmos service. Children should be dressed appropriately for church. The calendar and school supply lists are available at www.saint-spyridon.org and copies will be available at the time of registration. Continuing this year, Culture Break and Greek Dance will be offered to all our Greek School students. Culture Break is our multi-media enrichment program that brings to life the history, geography, and culture of Greece in order to enhance understanding of our students heritage and promote conversational skills. This program is generously sponsored by our P.T.A. for all our Greek School students 3rd-6th grades in the fall and K-2nd in the spring. Greek Dance is taught during class on Fridays and our students will perform at our Greek School programs and at the summer festival. Greek Dance is offered to Pre-K-2nd grades in the fall semester and 3rd-8th grades in the spring semester. Also continuing this year is the Greek Experience seminar, which offers a conversational setting for sixth grade Greek School graduates to continue their Greek Language education. The seminar takes place every Friday, 4:30 p.m. 6:30 p.m., and includes conversation, current events, geography, history, and Greek dance. The seminar will prepare our students for the option to take the Ellinomatheia exam at the end of the school year. Elinomatheia is an evaluation test offered by the Greek government. Information may be found at http://www.greeklanguage.gr. A new class is available for sixth grade graduates in our Byzantine Music School. Students will be taught the basics of our Byzantine Music tradition and also practice their Greek language skills in reading, chanting, and comprehending our church hymns. Classes will take place on Mondays, 4:30 p.m.-6:00 p.m., followed by the Paraklesis service in which our students may practice chanting. This class will be taught by Fr. Tilemahos.
Registration for Ploutarchos will be held in the month of August during church office hours, (Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.) and on Sunday, August 28th, September 4th & 11th after the Divine Liturgy. However, we urge parents to register their child/children well before the first day of school so that we can properly plan for staffing and room assignments.
