(Of course, Liturgy WILL be celebrated on Sunday, Nov 13 at St. Haralambos.) (Liturgy WILL NOT be celebrated at St. Haralambos on Nov 30.) SACRAMENTS AND BLESSINGS BLESSINGS OF INFANTS Forty days after birth, a child and its mother come to church to receive a 40 Day Blessing, imitating Christ who was presented in the Temple 40 days after He was born. Please call the church office to arrange this blessing. BAPTISMS Please call the church office to schedule Baptisms. Plan ahead! there are some days when Baptisms are not performed. Keep in mind that there should be only one Godparent and that a child is supposed to be given but one name when he or she is baptized. WEDDINGS Please arrange an appointment with Fr. Dean at least eight months before the proposed wedding date to allow time for all necessary marriage preparation. CONFESSION Confessions are arranged by appointment. Please call the church office to schedule Confession. MINISTRY TO PERSONS WHO ARE SICK Orthodox Christians who would like to receive Holy Sacraments but are unable to attend church (hospitalized or at home) should contact the church office so Holy Sacraments can be administered to them. Please inform the church office if your loved one is hospitalized! Most hospitals no longer inform us when they receive patients from our parish. MEMORIAL SERVICES Memorial Services are offered for the eternal rest of persons who have fallen asleep in the Lord. Customarily, these services are offered at 40 days, at 6 months, at 1 year and at 3 years. When three years have passed, the departed are more properly remembered on the Saturdays of the Souls. The Nativity Fast Did you know that the Nativity fast begins on November 15 and ends on Christmas day, December 25? For us, the Nativity Fast serves to refresh the last part of the year - mystically renewing our spiritual unity with God and preparing us for the Feast of the Nativity of Christ. St. Leo the Great wrote: Four periods [of the year] have been set aside as times of abstinence, so that over the course of the year we might recognize that we are constantly in need of purification, and that amid life s distractions, we should always strive by means of fasting and acts of charity to extirpate sin, sin which is multiplied in our transitory flesh and in our impure desires. According to St. Symeon of Thessalonica, the Nativity Forty-day Fast represents the fast undertaken by Moses, who, having fasted for forty days and forty nights, received the Commandments of God, written on stone tablets [of the Law]. And we, fasting for forty days, will reflect upon and receive from the Virgin of the living Word - not written upon stone, but born, incarnate, and we will commune of His Divine Body. The Nativity Fast was established to allow us through repentance, prayer and fasting to cleanse ourselves before the Nativity of Christ, so that with clean heart, soul, and body, we might reverently meet the Son of God, Who has come into the world and so that in addition to bringing the usual gifts and sacrifices, we might bring Him our clean hearts and a desire to follow His teachings. May God grant that we all spend the salvific days of the Nativity Fast in such a way as to be a great benefit to our souls. 2

HOLY TAXIARHAI AND SAINT HARALAMBOS GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH 7373 CALDWELL AVENUE, NILES, ILLINOIS 60714 PHONE: 847/647-8880 From Father Dean November 2011 Dear Stewards and Friends of St. Haralambos, October was such a memorable month! Not only did we celebrate our delicious Oktoberfest Dinner, but we had the joy and honor of hearing the fabulous Konevets Quartet from St. Petersburg, Russia. What a beautiful liturgical experience! And the annual Symposium (that always takes place in October) was a terrific day of learning and enlightenment. I am so sorry that so few people from St. Haralambos took advantage of it. We also have had an enthusiastic beginning to our Stewards in Action program! There are 5 areas that we are stressing: Hospitality, Events & Programs, Strategic Planning, Outreach & Evangelism, and Stewardship Campaign, but we need many, many more people to make this work. Join in! Our next meeting will be on December 13. We have a lot to look forward to in November, especially the Christmas Bazaar (November 18-19) and the Pan-Orthodox Thanksgiving Eve Liturgy (November 23). Then we celebrate THANKSGIVING! This year, let s make a greater effort to actually give thanks to God on that wonderful holiday! It soon will be time to start thinking about our 2012 Stewardship! As we acknowledge that Christ is the Vine and we are the branches, we must be thankful to God. At the same time we realize that He expects the branches that s us to be fruitful! We bear fruit when we serve and support God and His Church. We are grateful to see that more and more of our members are feeling a sense of ownership and pride in their church, and are responding by connecting their level of giving to their income and resource level. And we thank you! Soon it will be time for Parish Council elections! Serving on the Parish Council is also a form of stewardship, and we believe that everyone should serve at least one term on the parish council! Is it time for YOU to step forward? New faces and fresh ideas are always welcomed. Nomination forms should be arriving soon. Finally, let us remind you about the annual DCFS Gift/Toy Drive for Foster Children. A few forms are still available, and the gifts must be wrapped and returned to our church office during the week of November 20-27. Our parishioners have always been so generous to this cause, and again we thank you! The Christmas Fast begins on November 15! For Orthodox Christians, fasting is an excellent discipline of anticipation. Just as we don t eat before going to a party, we fast so we can celebrate the holiday to the max. Let s try to keep this fast in anticipation of our Lord s Birth, and then celebrate the beautiful 12 Days of Christmas in their fullness! Fr. THE BULLETIN BOARD Parish Announcements 2011 Stewardship Come and See! Together with your generous Stewardship, our church also depends on occasional Fund-Raisers, such as last month s OKTOBERFEST Luncheon. These fund-raisers serve two important purposes. One is to raise additional funds for our church s operational needs, and the other is to build a stronger sense of community. Did you know that our Big Greek Food Fest merely got us out of the red? Although some people seem to think that our church has excess funds, we struggle just to pay our expenses! Last year, it was decided to place $50,000 from Fest profits in a development contingency fund, with the faith that our stewards would fill this gap with increased Stewardship for the daily, operational needs of our church. The second purpose of our fund-raisers is to bond us together and build a sense of community. That is why good Stewardship and your support of these extra events is so important! THANK YOU LUNCHEON FOR ALL OUR STEWARDS The St. Haralambos Stewards in Action invite all our Saint Haralambos Stewards to a Stewards Thank You Luncheon on Sunday, November 6, following the Divine Liturgy, as an expression of gratitude for your ongoing support of the ministries of our church. Please mark your calendar and plan to join us! THE ANNUAL PAN-ORTHODOX EVENING THANKSGIVING LITURGY will take place at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Libertyville, Illinois at 7:00 pm on Wednesday evening, November 23. This Divine Liturgy is sponsored by The Orthodox Christian Clergy Association of Chicago & by SYNERGY, giving all of us the opportunity to celebrate an "American" holiday in an Orthodox way, together with fellow Orthodox Christians from different backgrounds. The outstanding Pan-Orthodox Choir of Chicago will sing the responses and we urge everyone to attend this beautiful service! All are welcomed! ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN GIFT/TOY DRIVE FOR FOSTER CHILDREN Again this year, the Orthodox Christian parishes of Chicago are collecting new toys to be given to foster children, under the direction of OCCA. St. Haralambos has volunteered to provide for 200 children this year! Visit the church office for more information; toys must be collected between November 21-28! 4 PHILOPTOCHOS HOLIDAY BAZAAR NOVEMBER 18-19 The St. Haralambos Philoptochos will be hosting its annual Holiday Bazaar this fall, on November 18-19. Lots of help will be needed for baking, set-up, serving! Please call the church office to offer your help. By working together, we can have a most successful Bazaar! PHILOPTOCHOS CHRISTMAS PARTY The ladies of our St. Haralambos Philoptochos will have their annual Christmas Dinner Party on Thursday evening, December 8 at the Rosewood. The reception hour will begin at 6:00 and Dinner will be a 7:00. Bring a friend! And don t forget to make reservations! MEN'S SOCIAL EVENT Our Annual Men's Social event will take place on Wednesday evening, the 23rd of November at the Fountain Blue in Des Plaines. Contact Jim Karalekas, Angelo Anastasiadis or the Church Office for more information! Ladies are welcome! OCF OPENS COLLEGE CONFERENCE REGISTRATION Orthodox Christian Fellowship has announced that registration for the 2011 College Conferences is now open at events.ocf.net. This year s conference focuses on the theme of Raise Me Above this World s Confusion, and is being held in three locations, Bolivar, PA, Salem, SC, and Dunlap, CA. For more information, see page 6 of this newsletter! Christmas Retreat for Families THE GIFTS OF THE MAGI Our annual Christmas Family Retreat will take place on Saturday, December 4, at the St. Iakovos Retreat Center in Kansasville, Wisconsin. We will have crafts, discussions, lunch and other projects, and all are welcome: Kids, moms, dads, grandparents the whole family! This is a goodtime, popular gathering. Please make your reservations by December 1st. Stewards in Action How can we, the Stewards of the Holy Taxiarhai and St. Haralambos, make our church s ministries more effective? How can we make our community warmer and more welcoming? How can we plan better for the future, and for the needs of all, young and old? We would like to invite our WHOLE COMMUNITY to help develop solutions! Do you care about these things? Do you have ideas? Become one of our Stewards in Action! WE NEED YOU! TIME TALENT TREAS-

2011 Stewardship Come and See! 5

ATTENTION! YOUNG ADULTS AND COLLEGE STUDENTS! Registration Now Open for 2011 College Conferences Registration for the 2011 College Conferences is now open at events.ocf.net. The conferences will be held during Christmas Break in three locations: St. Nicholas Ranch in Dunlap, Calif.; Antiochian Village in Bolivar, Pa.; and the Diakonia Center in Salem, S.C., each centering on Orthodox Christian Fellowship's (OCF) theme for the year - "Raise Me Above This World's Confusion." Annually, nearly 400 college students from across North America participate in College Conference to learn and grow closer in their Orthodox Faith in an exemplary display of pan-orthodox fellowship. Each four-day conference includes a prominent keynote speaker, along with workshops led by clergy and lay leaders who are experts in their related fields. Featured workshop topics will include Understanding Orthodoxy, Comparative Religions, Practicing Your Faith, Contemporary Issues in Orthodoxy, Dating and Personal Relationship, and Serving, defined as "Seeing God in Others." "College Conference is a great opportunity for college students to take time away from their busy academic and social lives and concentrate on developing their spiritual lives by learning from clergymen and great speakers, and by engaging with other Orthodox students from across the country. A limited number of scholarships are available and offered, by each jurisdiction on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information, call the North American Office at 1-800-919-1623.
