ST. NICHOLAS GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH June 2015 Volume 43 - Issue 6 What is a Dad? A Dad is someone who Wants to catch you before you fall But instead picks you up, Brushes you off, And lets you try again. A Dad is someone who Wants to keep you from making mistakes But instead lets you find our own way, Even though his heart breaks in silence When you get hurt. A Dad is someone who Holds you when you cry, Scolds you when you break the rules, Shines with pride when you succeed, And has faith in you when you fall. A Father Just Like You I just want you to know You mean the world to me, Only a heart as dear as yours Would give so unselfishly. The many things you ve done, All the times that you were there Helps me know deep inside How much you really care. Even though I might not say, I appreciate all you do Richly blessed in how we feel To have a father jus like you. Father Is a Source of Strength A Father is a source of strength, A teacher and a guide, The one his family looks up to With loving trust and pride A Father is a helper With a willing hand to lend, A partner, an adviser, And the finest kind of friend. THE CANON Father s Message Brethren, In one body we have many members. But all the members have not the same function. Likewise, though many in number, we form one body in Christ, and we depend mutually on one another. Therefore, rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep; and live in harmony with one another also. Do not be arrogant, but associate with the lowly. Do not be conceited. Return no evil for evil. Bear in mind to be noble in the sight of all men. Be at peace with everybody, so far as you can and so far as it depends on you. Dear friends, never revenge yourselves, but leave it to the divine retribution, for it is written in the Scripture: Vengeance is mine. And I will repay it, says the Lord. On the contrary, if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him drink; for by acting thus, you will heap coals of fire on his head. Do be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Guests Welcome! Call Church office for reservations 960-2992 by June 5th Limited seating Saints Veneration Orthodox Christians do not worship the Theotokos and the Saints; rather they venerate them. God alone is worshipped. Anyone who claims that the Orthodox worship Saints is guilty of bearing false witness against his neighbor since we clearly do not believe this. The Saints are reverenced as reflections of the Christ image. It is God Who is glorified through His Saints. They are praised for what god has done in and through them. Reverence for Saints is enhanced through the use and veneration of icons which are ever-present in Orthodox homes. The icon becomes a meeting place, an existential encounter, a window through which we look on the Saints not as shadowy figures from a remote pst but as contemporary brothers and sisters in Christ, members of the same household of God. We feel free to call on them through prayer for family support as they intercede to God in our behalf. For example, St. Basil the Great writes: I accept the saintly Apostles, prophets, and martyrs, in my prayer to God I call upon them and through their prayer I receive mercy from our God who loves all humanity. There is in man an innate sense of reverence for moral greatness. In Orthodox Christianity this reverence finds expression in the veneration of the Saints, the moral giants of our faith. The Orthodox believer s daily association with the Saints; whose lives glorified Christ, serves to form the Orthodox lifestyle. The veneration of Saints serves also as a safeguard of the true faith and as a test of Orthodoxy. Any teaching that is not in harmony with the lives and faith of the Saints is rejected as false. All that is in harmony is welcomed for the enrichment it brings. Having remembered all the Saints We do not pray alone during the liturgy. We pray together with all the Saints. This is expressed when the priest says, Having remembered all the Saints, again and again in peace let us pray to the Lord. The saints here refer to both the living and departed members of the Church. More than once during the liturgy the priest calls on us to pray with the similar exhortation; Calling to remembrance our most holy, pure, blessed and glorified Lady, Theotokos and ever-virgin Mary together will all the Saints, let us commit ourselves and each other to Christ our God. Here we see clearly that the purpose of bringing to mind the Theotokos and all the Saints is to lead us to a deeper commitment to Christ our God. The focus is not on the Saints but on Christ. After we have remembered the Saints, we move on to commit ourselves and each other to Christ our God. Having fixed our gaze on others in the family of god who have rendered perfect service to His excellent glory, we are properly inspired to offer ourselves in toal surrender and commitment to Christ, our Lord.

(Continued on page 5) Sevi Kontokanis School: Avon High School Class of 2015 Honors/Awards: International Thespian with a 5- Star Honor ranking. 7 The divinely-blessed peter was from Bethsaida of Galilee. He was the son of Jonas and the brother of Andrew the First-called. He was a fisherman by trade, unlearned and poor, and was called Simon; later he was renamed Peter by the Lord Jesus Christ Himself, Who looked at him and said, Thou are Simon the son of Jonas; thou shalt be called Cephas (which is by interpretation, Peter) (John 1:42). On being raise by the Lord to the dignity of an Apostle and becoming inseparable from Him as His zealous disciple, he followed Him from the beginning of His preaching of salvation up until the very Passion, when in the court of Caiaphas the high priest, he denied Him thrice because of his fear of the Jews and of the danger at hand. But again, after many bitter tears, he received complete forgiveness of his transgression. After the resurrection of Christ and the descent of the Holy Spirit, he preached in Judea, Antioch, and certain parts of Asia, and finally came to Rome, where he was crucified upside down by Nero, and thus he ascended to the eternal habitations about the year 66 or 68, leaving two General Epistles to the Church of Christ. Paul, the chosen vessel of Christ, the glory of the Church the Apostle of the Nations and teacher of the whole world, was a Jew by race, of the tribe of Benjamin, having Tarsus as his homeland. He was a Roman citizen, fluent in the Greek language, an expert in knowledge of the Law, a Pharisee, born of a Pharisee, and a disciple of Gamaliel, a Pharisee and notable teacher of the Law in Jerusalem. SS. PETER AND PAUL June 29 For this cause, from the beginning, Paul was a most fervent zealot for the traditions of the Jews and a great persecutor of the Church of Christ; at the time, his name was Saul (Acts 22:3-4). In his great passion of rage and fury against the disciples of the Lord, he went to Damascus bearing letters of introduction from the High Priest. His intention was to bring the Disciples of Christ back to Jerusalem in bonds. As he was approaching Damascus, about midday there suddenly shown upon him a light from Heaven. Falling on the earth, he heard a voice saying to him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou Me? And he asked, Who art Thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus Whom thou persecutest; it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. And that heavenly voice and brilliance made him tremble, and he was blinded for a time. He was led by the hand into the city, and on account of a divine revelation to the Apostle Ananias, he was baptized by him, and both his bodily and spiritual eyes were opened to the knowledge of the Sun of Righteousness. And straightway o wondrous transformation! beyond all expectation, he spoke with boldness in the synagogues, proclaiming that Christ is the Son of God (Act 9:1-21). As for his zeal in preaching the Gospel after these things had come to pass, as for his unabating labors and afflictions of diverse kinds, the wounds, the prisons, the bonds, the beatings, the stoning, the shipwrecks, the journeys, the perils on land and sea, in cities, in wilderness, the continual vigils, the daily fasting, the hunger, the (Continued on page 7) (Continued from page 6) SS. Peter and Paul thirst, the nakedness, and all those other things that he endured for the Name of Christ, and which he underwent before nations and kings and the Israelites, and above all, his care for all the churches, his fiery longing for the salvation of all, whereby he became all things to all men, that he might save them all if possible, and because of which, with his heart aflame, he continuously traveled throughout all parts, visititng them all, and like a bird of heaven flying from Asia and Europe, the West and East, neither staying or abiding in any one place all these things are related incident by incident in the Book of Acts, and as he himself tells them in his Epistles, His epistles, being fourteen in number, are explained in 250 homilies by the divine Chrysostom and make manifest the loftiness of his thoughts, the abundance of the revelations made to him, the wisdom given to him from God, wherewith he brings together in a wondrous manner the Old and the New Testaments, and expounds the mysteries thereof which had been concealed under types; he confirms the doctrines of the Faith, expounds the ethical teaching of the Gospel, and demonstrates with exactness the duties incumbent upon every rand, age, and order of man. In all these things his teaching proved to be a spiritual trumpet, and his speech was seen to be more radiant than the sun, an by these means he clearly sounded forth the word of truth and illumined the ends of the world. Having completed the work of his ministry, he likewise ended his life in martyrdom when he was beheaded in Rome during the reign of Nero, at the same time, some say, when Peter was crucified. Apolytikion of Apostles Peter and Paul: First in prominence among the apostles, and teachers in the Universe, intercede to the Master of all for peace in the world and for the souls of great mercy.
