Background Information Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. It was famous in antiquity for its copper mines, fine craftsmanship and luxury goods, and, perhaps most of all, as the birthplace of the goddess Aphrodite. Look at the map of the Mediterranean Sea between the Cases 8 and 9. Find the map of the Cyprus Kingdoms between Case 9 & 10. Colonel Falkland Warren, chief administrator of the British government on Cyprus, stands on the right. The Cypriot servants in the middle remind us of the role local people played in the discovery of ancient Cyprus. They believed in the goddess of fertility, the god of woodland and many others. They worshiped their gods in temples and used to leave sanctuaries as permanent records of their visit there. Go to cases 3, 4, 7 and 12 Find three objects that you think may have served a similar purpose to the ones we use today in our worship (see previous page). Take photos of your 3 objects. Discuss.
