SPYRIDON HELLENIC ORTHODOX CHURCH 12307 S. RIDGELAND AVE. PALOS HEIGHTS, IL 60463 WWW. SAINT- SPYRIDON.ORG Hymn of Note The third eothinon or morning hymn of our series reflects upon the extended ending of Mark s gospel. While the short version of this gospel ends with the women leaving the empty tomb in silent fear, in the longer version Jesus appears to Mary Magdalene and to others before ascending to heaven. Particularly, these added verses tell us of the disciples unbelief and that Jesus upbraided them for their weak faith. In the end, however, Jesus commands them to work miracles and preach the gospel throughout the world. The morning hymn, our third eothinon tells us the story: When Mary Magdalene gave the good tidings of the Savior s Resurrection from the dead and his appearing, the Disciples doubted and were upbraided for their hardness of heart; but armed with signs and wonders they were sent to preach. And while you, Lord, were taken up to the Father, source of light, they, entrusted with the wonders, began to preach the word everywhere. Therefore, enlightened through them, we glorify your Resurrection from the dead, O Lord who loves humankind. (continued on page 2) Christmas Craft Show December 1st & 2nd, 2012

When hearing this hymn beautifully chanted in the third tone (you may listen to it at http://www.ec-patr.net/en/sounds_htm/eothina.htm), there are two points that stand out. First is the unbraiding of the disciples. Despite the time they spent together with Jesus, despite the miracles, the prophecies, and the testimonies that they heard from Mary Magdalene, the Virgin Mary and the other women and witnesses, they would not believe. Yet Jesus does not proceed to replace them and recruit new and more faithful disciples. While they were all reduced to flight because of the fear of the cross, God brings faith out of their weakness. There are no heroes among the disciples. In fact, the seemingly strongest among them, denied by oath that he ever knew Him. Yet, Jesus entrusts these weak men with His message of salvation for the world. From this event, we come to understand that however imperfect our faith may be and however many times we lose our courage and remain silent when we should be living and practicing the gospel, the Lord will always encourage us, accept us, and welcome our repentance and renewed commitment. It is in fact impossible to stray so far from God that we would not be able to receive His grace and blessing. Jesus will always be accompanying those who repent with a contrite heart and spirit, no matter how far they denied Him or walked away from Him. While our sins and lack of courage to confess and live the gospel might reveal our distance from God, the next aspect of our eothinon reveals an even greater gap. We see for instance that Jesus commanded the disciples to preach the gospel accompanied by signs and miracles. In His name they cast out demons, they spoke in tongues, picked up snakes in their hands, they drank deadly things and did not get hurt, and they laid their hands on the sick and were healed. All these things we see in the preaching of the disciples as described in the Book of Acts. The question I always have when reading this passage as reflected in our eothinon is why our preaching today is not accompanied by such signs. Surely, the greatest of miracles occur every time we celebrate the mystery of Holy Communion where bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ. We even hear of miracles on occasion that occur through the intercessions of the saints even in our day. There are small miracles of repentance and healing that happen daily, most of which go unnoticed. Yet I can t help but think of what happened to that dynamic preaching of the disciples and the miraculous power that accompanied it. With so many physical, emotional, spiritual ailments around us, what has happened to the healing ministry of the gospel message? Some will say that the physical manifestation of the Church s healing ministry has relegated its importance to the spiritual healing of its people. Why then are we not inundated with the spiritually healed? Why are our confession rooms empty? Where is the fervor and gratitude of those who are spiritually healed? One can only imagine the enthusiasm brought about by the physical healings that accompanied the preaching of the disciples. 2 The Voice

Should not the spiritual healings bring out even more enthusiasm? Or is it perhaps that there is little spiritual healing going on? Is it perhaps that we have embraced the weakness of the disciples and yet have not sought the courage the disciples acquired by the Holy Spirit. I will let you come to your own conclusion. As much as we might realize a gap between where we are as Christ s faithful and where we should be, let us not forget that we can never stray so far as to be beyond hope. We can never sin too much or walk away too far that we would be outside of God s grace. We only need to embrace a life of repentance and the Lord will bring great faith out of our weakness. We never despair. We are never alone. To those who are of humble heart, Jesus will always work with them and confirm by the sign of their own healing the message of salvation that is granted to all. Let us just hope that we are among those who receive the message with a good, honest, and humble heart, and listen to our third eothinon with great joy and encouragement from here on forward. Amen. SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS On Sunday, October 21st, our Sunday School teachers and students, along with the P.T.A. hosted our Godparents Sunday celebration. This year we had the added blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Nikitas who celebrated the Divine Liturgy. There are two big events during the month of November. On Saturday, November 3rd, all our families are invited to our annual Walk the Walk for IOCC, a wonderful opportunity to get together, enjoy a beautiful nature walk, and raise money for a great cause such as the IOCC. On Saturday, November 17th, the Youth Ministry Department of our Metropolis has asked us to host the JOY ADVENT RETREAT. It is a great opportunity for our St. Spyridon families to take advantage of this event and spend a day as a family with a guest speaker, crafts, service projects and fellowship. All kids K-6th and their families are asked to attend. The children had a great time creating their palm trees, and they found a new favorite book at the same time! We also celebrated OXI day by creating beautiful flags and discussing the meaning of this important day in Greek history. The children have really come to love coming to "school" and it's wonderful to see how much fun they're having each week! We're here every Tuesday at 10:30, so feel free to join us! Last month, we had our first field trip of the year. We went to the Children's Farm in Palos Park. Thank you to all the wonderful chaperons who attended the trip with us. Being a real working farm, it made for a great trip as students were able to hold baby chicks and pet a variety of animals including sheep and goats. This month, on November 8th, the school will be celebrating the feast day of the school, the Synaxis of the Archangels, with the Divine Liturgy and the Artoclasia. has one opening for the 2012-2013 school year. If you are interested in the position please contact Mrs. Anna at archangels@saint-spyridon.org or call 708-385-2311. Students were very excited to sing happy birthday to Fr. PARISH EVENTS CHRISTMAS FAST The forty day fast for the feast of the Nativity begins Thursday, November 15th. According to the Church canons, fish, wine and oil are allowed until December 17th, except for Wednesdays and Friday. Strict fast is observed from December 18th to the 24th. This year, we will once again celebrate the Sarantaleitourgo, forty liturgies during the Christmas Fast in conjunction with the parish of Holy Cross, in Justice, IL. It is a custom of the Orthodox Church to celebrate forty consecutive liturgies leading up to Christmas Day, and this year we will work together with Fr. Athanasios, the parish priest of Holy Cross, alternating locations for the Divine Liturgy. A schedule for the services and the location is included in this bulletin. All parishioners are called to give their list of names, of both the living and those who have fallen asleep, to be commemorated during the forty consecutive liturgies. Commemoration sheets are available in the narthex. Services will begin each morning at 8:00 a.m. FOOD PANTRY We wish to thank all our parishioners and friends of St. Spyridon for remembering our Food Pantry. As you know, our Food Pantry helps our St. Spyridon families that have a need for assistance. It is very important that we keep our Food Pantry filled at all times, so that we do not turn anyone away because of lack of food.
