The EPISTLE will be read in GREEK today EPISTLE: Blessed are you, O Lord, the God of our fathers. For you are just in all you have done. The Reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews. (11:24-26, 32-40) Brethren, by faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, choosing rather to share ill-treatment with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. And what more shall I say? For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets -- who through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, received promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword, won strength out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign enemies to flight. Women received their dead by resurrection. Some were tortured, refusing to accept release, that they might rise again to a better life. Others suffered mocking and scourging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were killed with the sword; they went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, ill-treated -- of whom the world was not worthy -- wandering over deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth. And all these, though well attested by their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God had foreseen something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect.

The GOSPEL will be read in ENGLISH today GOSPEL: The Reading is from John (1:43-51) At that time, Jesus decided to go to Galilee. And he found Philip and said to him, "Follow me." Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael, and he said to him, "We have found him of whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph." Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see." Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and said of him, "Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!" Nathanael said to him, "How do you know me?" Jesus answered him, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you." Nathanael answered him, "Rabbi, you are the son of God! You are the King of Israel!" Jesus answered him, "Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You shall see greater things than these." And he said to him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man."

PROCESSION OF ICONS TODAY In recognition of today's feast day, a procession of Icons will take place within the nave of the Church. The Altar Boys will be leading the procession followed by the Sunday School pupils (holding icons which they should have brought from their homes) and teachers. The Archons and the Presidents of the Parish Council and Philoptochos will fall in behind the Sunday School. Finally, the Priest holding the Holy Cross will take his position behind the Archons and Presidents of the Parish Council and Philoptochos. The procession will stop at the different sides of the Church where petitions will be said. The Congregation is invited to chant along with our Choir the response KYRIE ELEISON, three times after each petition is said. The Meaning of the Sunday of Orthodoxy Today, the Sunday of Orthodoxy, the first Sunday of Great Lent, the Orthodox world celebrates the triumph of truth over heresy and error. On this day, in the year 843 AD the Church celebrated the restoration of icons after the iconoclastic (icon-breaking) controversy. In 730, Leo III, the Emperor of Byzantium issued a decree that all icons be destroyed and their use banned. He felt that their misuse might lead to idolatry. This decree brought about a division in the Church between the ICONODULES - supporters of the icons, and the ICONOCLASTS - those who opposed their use. Empress Irene in 787 convened the Seventh Ecumenical Council at which 350 bishops decided that veneration and honor should be expressed towards the icons, and not adoration, which was to be reserved for God alone. The iconoclasts, being stronger in number, prevented the restoration of icons. In 843, Empress Theodora assembled the Bishops and they reaffirmed the decision of the Council and thus icons were restored in the Churches. On this day, the Sunday of Orthodoxy, in the Church of St. Sophia in Constantinople, an official act of restoration took place, which continues to be celebrated in Orthodox Churches to this day. The clergy and laity processed in the Patriarchal Church bearing icons and chanting hymns of the Church, which we chant today, during the procession.

March 22, 2013 Dear Fellow Parishioners, On March 17, 2013 our Proistamenos Father Nicholas Manousakis announced his retirement after forty-two years of service to the Church, ten years of which were devoted to the needs of our parish of Saints Constantine and Helen of Washington, DC. The Parish Council, thank Father Nick and Presvytera Kostoula for their many years of service, their tireless commitment to our Parish, and his ministry during that time. Father Nick has been a major contributor to our community and was instrumental in the launching of our Nea Zoe efforts. Certainly, without Father Nick s involvement, we would not find ourselves at this exciting juncture. As we travel on our Nea Zoe journey, we continue to encounter new challenges and opportunities. In order to meet these challenges, the Parish Council felt a change of leadership was in order. The decision of the Parish Council to seek change was not an easy one, and one not taken lightly. The recommendation was approved by a majority of the Parish Council and supported by the Archdiocese as the right path forward for the future of our parish. During these discussions, Father Nick chose to begin the retirement process with the Archdiocese. Moving forward, the Parish Council continues to support our Nea Zoe efforts and continued growth of our community. We will continue to work with Father Nick and the Archdiocese to ensure a smooth transition. In closing, we want to again thank Father Nick and Presvytera Kostoula for all that they have done and given to our beloved Parish. We wish you a blessed Lent and thank you for your continued support. Respectfully, The Parish Council Saints Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church of Washington, DC
