Patience! Pastor s Message Thank You for being Patient with us, we will get to you as soon as possible. We hear this countless times when we are trying to talk to the phone company or any other business. We have learned to expect results immediately right away! Not because Time is precious (because we waste it whether by staring at our phones and computers constantly) but because we are not a peace. When we obtain peace in our mind, we learn to practice patience and when we learn to be patient then we are at peace. So we must start somewhere. We misuse time when it comes to our Faith as well. I m not talking about prioritizing Church (that s for a whole other article). But we want immediate results our way. God wants us to ask him for what we want but at the same time he is not a Genie granting what we want and how we want. Prayer is a communication with God where its goal is to transform us while some answers are faster than others. We wait, we realize what we truly need. Sometimes the answer comes in waiting. Just as a child is not born the day after it is conceived and not all prayers are answered the next day either. The nine months that a mother has a child in her womb gives time for her to adjust, transform and prepare the mother and father for the new chapter in their life. Those nine months are transformative during its challenges. Even God waited to become flesh and become man and grow as a child. He waited to be crucified not so that our sins are forgiven, as Saint Isaac the Syrian wrote, but to show us how much he loves us. He waited and became incarnate for humanity and its salvation (the Creed) out of LOVE. What about people that frustrate us? It is important to remember that God is patient with all us. You are his child and so is the person you might strongly dislike. Jesus was patient with his disciples for three years! He was patient with Judas, giving him many opportunities to change his ways. We cannot change other people; we only hope to inspire them by our actions as Christ did. We must not expect for others to change because others will create their own consequences, but we must be patient for our anger to become compassion and our hate to become love. It took Moses 40 years to lead the people of Israel out of slavery and out of the dessert. His patience tested by the people he was trying to help. It took the Greeks over 400 years to be freed from the Ottoman Occupation. History can show us many examples. Being patient should not be interchanged with being careless or procrastinating. Faith and Works are important ingredients. Having Patience is having the wisdom to know what we can and cannot control. The Saints in the church endured and prayed for patience. Saint Nektarios was casted out of Egypt out of envy and rumors. Time revealed the truth. Time healed his heart and dried his tears. Time transformed the Saint and those around him. Why should we be any different? This is why we look to the Saints for inspiration, for guidance, for patience. I have been asked Why can t I just pray to God directly, why do I need the middle man? This comes from the mentality where we want to speak directly to the manager, sometimes not even the manager, the owner! Of course we pray to Christ. We are not to fear him with terror, to approach him with awe and love. He wants us to come to Him. When we look to the saints to pray for us, we are looking at people who may have gone through what we are going through and that their life, which centered on Christ, may inspire us. Having patience is a challenge for all of us. Waiting is frustrating. Not knowing results can be agonizing. We must pray for peace and patience to endure what we face, and in time we are transformed. It is important to remind ourselves that God has led us this far and he will continue to lead us. We must always thank God for the blessings seen and unseen and yet to be seen. Doing so we can acquire patience. Page 14 In His service, Fr. Christos Page 3

Page 4 Page 13

Hopefully now the weather is cooperating and bringing some cooler temperatures as our dancers practice night after night! On behalf of the Board, I wanted to thank everyone for their support of our October Diakonia project: Helping the Children of Greece. The economic crisis combined with the refugee crisis has depleted many resources in Greece. The money raised was used to purchase food, school supplies, clothing, and other essentials through a local philanthropic organization on the island of Samos. Thank you to Paraskevi June for coordinating this project as well as Evan Karantonis for the wonderful design of our "Wall of Hope" recognizing our donors. Our November Diakonia project will be collecting toiletries and everyday essentials to be sent to the Long Beach Rescue Mission. Because of Thanksgiving, there is a big focus on food drives, but there are so many other basic needs that are just as important. Please keep an eye out in the hallways of the Education Building for more information and collection boxes. Please mark your calendars for our upcoming New Year's Eve event. This year's event will take place on Thursday, December 31. You don't want to miss out on the fun and dancing and ringing in the New Year with your family and friends! Finally, don't forget to register for FDF packages and take advantage of the early bird prices. Registration should be open mid-november but you can make your hotel room reservations now. Visit www.yourfdf.org for more information. Greek school is in full swing, we just completed our "OXI DAY" celebration with the students reciting poems and the Pre - School students singing a song. The event was wonderful, it was nice to see all the parents, grandparents and relatives join us on this important day. All teachers and I are so proud of our students with their performance. Keep up the good job. We would like to thank all the parents who helped to make this day a success. It is not too late to sign up your child for Greek school if anyone is interested. We have room in our Pre - School class and Kindergarten class and meet every Wednesday from 5:30-7:00.
