HYMNS OF THE DAY Resurrectional Apolytikion in the First Mode: Savior, Your tomb was sealed with a stone. Soldiers kept watch over Your sacred body. Yet, You rose on the third day giving life to the world. Wherefore the powers of heaven cried out, "O Giver of Life, glory to Your Resurrection O Christ; glory to Your Kingdom, glory to Your dispensation who alone are the Loving One." Seasonal Kontakion in the Third Mode: O Father, foolishly I ran away from Your glory, and in sin, squandered the riches You gave me. Wherefore, I cry out to You with the voice of the Prodigal, "I have sinned before You Compassionate Father. Receive me in repentance and take me as one of Your hired servants." Receiving Holy Communion - We welcome to this celebration of the Divine Liturgy those Christians who are from other Christian Denominations and who are not fully united with us. Sadly, it is a consequence of the divisions in Christianity that we cannot extend to you an invitation to receive Holy Communion. Orthodox Christians believe that the Eucharist is the work or action of the celebrating community signifying a oneness of faith, life, and worship of the believing community. Reception of Holy Communion by Christians not fully united with us would imply a oneness which does not yet exist, and for which we must pray. However, all present are welcome to partake of the Antidoro (blessed bread) which is distributed at the end of the Liturgy Service.

EPISTLE READING Prokeimenon. First Mode. Psalm 32.22,1. Let your mercy, O Lord, be upon us. Verse: Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous. The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 6:12-20. Brethren, "all things are lawful for me," but not all things are helpful. "All things are lawful for me," but I will not be enslaved by anything. "Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food" -- and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is not meant for immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I therefore take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! Do you not know that he who joins himself to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, "The two shall become one flesh." But he who is united to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. Shun immorality. Every other sin which a man commits is outside the body; but the immoral man sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God? You are not your own; you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body and in your spirit which belong to God. First Mode.

GOSPEL READING Sunday of the Prodigal Son The Reading is from Luke 15:11-32 The Lord said this parable: "There was a man who had two sons; and the younger of them said to his father, 'Father, give me the share of the property that falls to me.' And he divided his living between them. Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took his journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in loose living. And when he had spent everything, a great famine arose in that country, and he began to be in want. So he went and joined himself to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed swine. And he would gladly have fed on the pods that the swine ate; and no one gave him anything. But when he came to himself he said, 'How many of my father's hired servants have bread enough and to spare, but I perish here with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me as one of your hired servants.' And he arose and came to his father. But while he was yet at a distance, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. And the son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.' But the father said to his servants, 'Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet; and bring the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and make merry; for this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.' And they began to make merry. Now his elder son was in the field; and as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. And he called one of the servants and asked what this meant. And he said to him, 'Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fatted calf, because he has received him safe and sound.' But he was angry and refused to go in. His father came out and entreated him, but he answered his father, 'Lo, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command; yet you never gave me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends. But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your living with harlots, you killed for him the fatted calf!' And he said to him, 'Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. It was fitting to make merry and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found.'"

TAXIARCHAE STEWARDSHIP YOU ARE THE VOICE OF CHRIST IN A CHANGING WORLD The base from which we serve as the Voice of Christ in a Changing World is the parish. A strong parish provides opportunities for sharing the Good News of Christ, for welcoming those that are searching for a spiritual home, and a base from which we are sent out into the world. The parish also provides a place for worship, community and education in the faith. To be stewards of the Gospel, we need to be stewards of our parish. This requires the vision and inspiration to see the parish, not as it is, but as it could be. We are called to offer ourselves and our treasure to make our local church all that is can be. The Blessing of our Homes at Epiphany As is customary, following the days of the Epiphany feast, the priest visits the homes of parishioners to perform the Agiasmo and to bless the family. If you wish to have your home blessed, please fill out the slip below and mail it to the church. Father Athanasios will call you to schedule his visit. We thank you and wish you a healthy and most prosperous New Year. When Christ entered the Jordan River, he sanctified the waters and all of creation. An important sign of God s sanctification of all things through the feast of Theophany is the act of blessing the homes of faithful Christians. The priest visits the members of the church to pray with them in the place where they live, and to bless their surroundings with Holy Water. He asks God to have mercy on the house, to rid it of every evil and to fill it with every blessing. To prepare for Father Athanasios visit to bless your home: Make a list of the first names of those family members you wish to pray for when Father Athanasios arrives. On your dining room table or family altar, place a lighted candle, an incense burner (if available), a family icon, a wide bowl (to hold the holy water the priest will bring), and some vasiliko (fresh leaf basil). Be sure your prayer list is there, too! Turn off all TVs, stereos, and computers. Secure any pets that might get underfoot. When Fr. Athanasios arrives, everyone in the house should gather around the table/family altar and join in the singing of the litany responses and Troparion. The family will then lead Father throughout the house for the blessing. Name: Address: Please list the baptismal names of the living you would like commemorated: Telephone home work cell Preferred Dates and Times: (Please indicate three)

Harris J. Booras Chapter #406 The AHEPA Harris J. Booras Chapter #406 of Watertown sends its greetings to the members of our Chapter & the Taxiarchae Community as we enter the three weeks of Triodion, the 1 st week of Lent & fasting in February! Happy Name day to all Photis, Theodore, Harry, Vlassis, and all whose Saints are in February We were deeply saddened by the passing of Br. Nichols Christakis, a 53-yr member of AHEPA Chapter #406 and one of our three Life Members. He was widely known in our Watertown Community because of his work, integrity, exemplary character, and family values. He supported our church via his generous stewardship and our AHEPA with his membership and donations for almost 60 years! May his memory be eternal! Our first meeting on January 19 included the annual Celebration/Blessing of the Vasilopita by Father Athanasios Nenes. On January 28, we hosted the District 8 Conference/Workshop at the Taxiarchae. Thirty District 8 AHEPA members worked to improve procedures & methods for efficiency, sustainment, & growth of our AHEPA in its next 100 years after its Centennial in 2022! AHEPA, is the main Greek-American organization with Chapters in US, Canada, Europe and elsewhere. It has maintained an ever-present profile, always ready to send aid in whatever disaster hits people all over the globe. We maintain good relations with the US Government and Congress in our effort to project our Hellenic ideals which have formed the basis of our Western Civilization. We are fast approaching our goal of $1M for the St. Nicholas National Shrine with many Chapters/ Communities offering $10,000 or more, while still continuing to send aid to Feed the Children of Greece. The AHEPA National HQ has received a generous donation of $1.25M by a Philhellene. It is earmarked for the AHEPA Hospital in Salonika, Greece which has suffered during the Greek economic crisis. This is just an example in a series of many over the years. AHEPA HQ has started the application process of the 2017 National Scholarships, also the AHEPA District 8 Scholarships application forms are available. Locally, we plan to contribute to the Taxiarchae Scholarships by including our AHEPA #406, Watertown Scholarship in Memory of Fr. Metaxas for which we have been fund raising with events and extra donations by our members. Our February Chapter Meeting will be held on February 9 in the Atrium of the Taxiarchae Center. The Social gathering with refreshments will start at 7:00 pm followed by the Meeting at 7:30 pm.
