Epistle B Hebrews 7:26-28; 8:1-2 rethren, it was fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, blameless, unstained, separated from sinners, exalted above the heavens. He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people; he did this once for all when he offered up himself. Indeed, the law appoints men in their weakness as high priests, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been made perfect for ever. Now the point in what we are saying is this: we have such a high priest, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, a minister in the sanctuary and the true tent which is set up not by man but by the Lord. Gospel Luke 19:1 10 A t that time, Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. And there was a man named Zacchaios; he was a chief collector, and rich. And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not, on account of the crowd, because he was small of stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, Zacchaios, make haste and come down; for I must stay at your house today. So he made haste and came down, and received him joyfully. Sunday of Zacchaeus The paschal season of the Church is preceded by the season of Great Lent, which is also preceded by its own liturgical preparation. The first sign of the approach of Great Lent comes five Sundays before its beginning. On this Sunday the Gospel reading is about Zacchaeus the tax-collector. It tells how Christ brought salvation to the sinful man, and how his life was changed simply because he sought to see who Jesus was (Luke 19:3). The desire and effort to see Jesus begins the entire movement through Lent towards Pascha. It is the first movement of salvation. Our lenten journey begins with a recognition of our own sinfulness, just as Zacchaeus recognized his. He promised to make restitution by giving half of his wealth to the poor, and by paying to those he had falsely accused four times as much as they had lost. In this, he went beyond the requirements of the Law (Ex. 22:3-12). The example of Zacchaeus teaches us that we should turn away from our sins, and atone for them. The real proof of our sorrow and repentance is not just a verbal apology, but when we correct ourselves and try to make amends for the consequences of our evil actions. We are also assured of God s mercy and compassion by Christ s words to Zacchaeus, the Lord, Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have defrauded any one of anything, I restore it fourfold. And Jesus said to him, Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of man came to seek and to save the lost. Sunday Before Triodion Today salvation is come to this house (Luke 19:9). After the Great Doxology at Sunday Matins (when the Tone of the week is Tone 1, 3, 5, 7) we sing the Dismissal Hymn of the Resurrection Today salvation has come to the world, which echoes the Lord s words to Zacchaeus. Zacchaeus was short, so he climbed a tree in order to see the Lord. All of us have sinned and come short of the glory of God (Rom. 3:23). We are also short in our spiritual stature, therefore we must climb the ladder of the virtues. In other words, we must prepare for spiritual effort and growth.

Triant Ms. Marigoula Troubalos Mr. Socrates Vrattos Mr. & Mrs. Matthew Woods Mr. & Mrs. Alexander Zedros Venerable Ephraim the Syrian January 28 Saint Ephraim the Syrian, a teacher of repentance, was born at the beginning of the fourth century in the city of Nisibis (Mesopotamia) into the family of impoverished toilers of the soil. His parents raised their son in piety, but from his childhood he was known for his quick temper and impetuous character. He often had fights, acted thoughtlessly, and even doubted God s Providence. He finally recovered his senses by the grace of God, and embarked on the path of repentance and salvation. Once, he was unjustly accused of stealing a sheep and was thrown into prison. He heard a voice in a dream calling him to repent and correct his life. After this, he was acquitted of the charges and set free. The young man ran off to the mountains to join the hermits. This form of Christian asceticism had been introduced by a disciple of St Anthony the Great, the Egyptian desert dweller Eugenius. St James of Nisibis (January 13) was a noted ascetic, a preacher of Christianity and denouncer of the Arians. St Ephraim became one of his disciples. Under the direction of the holy hierarch, St Ephraim attained Christian meekness, humility, submission to 6 God s will, and the strength to undergo various temptations without complaint. St James transformed the wayward youth into a humble and conrite monk. Realizing the great worth of his disciple, he made use of his talents. He trusted him to preach sermons, to instruct children in school, and he took Ephraim with him to the First Ecumenical Council at Nicea (in the year 325). St Ephraim was in obedience to St James for fourteen years, until the bishop s death in 338. After the capture of Nisibis by the Persians in 363, St Ephraim went to a monastery near the city of Edessa. Here he saw many great ascetics, passing their lives in prayer and psalmody. Their caves were solitary shelters, and they fed themselves with a certain plant. He also wrote the first Syriac commentary on the Pentateuch (i.e. Five Books ) of Moses. He wrote many prayers and hymns, thereby enriching the Church s liturgical services. Famous prayers of St Ephraim are to the Most Holy Trinity, to the Son of God, and to the Most Holy Theotokos. He composed hymns for the Twelve Great Feasts of the Lord (the
SUNDAY 25 JANUARY 2015 7 Nativity of Christ, the Baptism, the Resurrection), and funeral hymns. St Ephraim s Prayer of Repentance, O Lord and Master of my life..., is recited during Great Lent, and it summons Christians to spiritual renewal. From ancient times the Church has valued the works of St Ephraim. His works were read publicly in certain churches after the Holy Scripture, as St Jerome tells us. At present, the Church Typikon prescribes certain of his instructions to be read on the days of Lent. Among the prophets, St David is the preeminent psalmodist; among the Fathers of the Church, St Ephraim the Syrian is the preeminent man of prayer. His spiritual experience made him a guide for monastics and a help to the pastors of Edessa. St Ephraim wrote in Syriac, but his works were very early translated into Greek and Armenian. Translations into Latin and Slavonic were made from the Greek text. In many of St Ephraim s works we catch glimpses of the life of the Syrian ascetics, which was centered on prayer and working in various obediences for the common good of the brethren. The outlook of all the Syrian ascetics was the same. The monks believed that the goal of their efforts was communion with God and the acquisition of divine grace. For them, the present life was a time of tears, fasting and toil. Constant spiritual sobriety, the developing of good within man s soul gives him the possibility to take upon himself a task like blessedness, and a self-constraint like sanctity. The requital is presupposed in the earthly life of man, it is an undertaking of spiritual perfection by degrees. Whoever grows himself wings upon the earth, says St Ephraim, is one who soars up into the heights; whoever purifies his mind here below, there glimpses the Glory of God. In whatever measure each one loves God, he is, by God s love,satiated to fullness according to that measure. Man, cleansing himself and attaining the grace of the Holy Spirit while still here on earth, has a foretaste of the Kingdom of Heaven. To attain to life eternal, in the teachings of St Ephraim, does not mean to pass over from one realm of being into another, but rather to discover the heavenly, spiritual condition of being. Eternal life is not bestown on man through God s one-sided efforts, but rather, it constantly grows like a seed within him by his efforts, toils and struggles. The pledge within us of theosis (or deification ) is the Baptism of Christ, and the main force that drives the Christian life is repentance. St Ephraim was a great teacher of repentance. The forgiveness of sins in the Mystery of Repentance, according to his teaching, is not an external exoneration, not a forgetting of the sins, but rather their complete undoing, their annihilation. The tears of repentance wash away and burn away the sin. Moreover, they (i.e. the tears) enliven, they transfigure sinful nature, they give the strength to walk in the way of the the Lord s commandments, encouraging hope in God. In the fiery font of repentance, the saint wrote, you sail yourself across, O sinner, you resurrect yourself from the dead. St Ephraim, accounting himself as the least and worst of all, went to Egypt at the end of his life to see the efforts of the great ascetics. He was accepted there as a welcome guest and received great solace from conversing with them. On his return journey he visited at Caesarea in Cappadocia with St Basil the Great (January 1), who wanted to ordain him a priest, but he considered himself unworthy of the priesthood. At the insistence of St Basil, he consented only to be ordained as a deacon, in which rank he remained until his death. Later on, St Basil invited St Ephraim to accept a bishop s throne, but the saint feigned madness in order to avoid this honor, humbly regarding himself as unworthy of it. After his return to his own Edessa wilderness, St Ephraim hoped to spend the rest of his life in solitude, but divine Providence again summoned him to serve his neighbor. The inhabitants of Edessa were suffering from a devastating famine. By the influence of his word, the saint persuaded the wealthy to render aid to those in need. From the offerings of believers he built a poor-house for the poor and sick. St Ephraim then withdrew to a cave near Edessa, where he remained to the end of his days.

10 ANNUNCIATION GREEK ORTHODOX CATHEDRAL OF NEW ENGLAND St. Gregory the Theologian January 25 This great Father and Teacher of the Church was born in 329 in Arianzus, a village of the second district of Cappadocia, not far from Nazianzus. His father, who later became Bishop of Nazianzus, was named Gregory (commemorated Jan. 1), and his mother was named Nonna (Aug. 5); both are among the Saints, and so are his brother Caesarius (Mar. 9) and his sister Gorgona (Feb. 23). At first he studied in Caesarea of Palestine, then in Alexandria, and finally in Athens. As he was sailing from Alexandria to Athens, a violent sea storm put in peril not only his life but also his salvation, since he had not yet been baptized. With tears and fervour he besought God to spare him, vowing to dedicate his whole self to Him, and the tempest gave way to calm. At Athens Saint Gregory was later joined by Saint Basil the Great, whom he already knew; but now their acquaintanceship grew into a lifelong brotherly love. Another fellow student of theirs in Athens was the young Prince Julian, who later as Emperor was called the Apostate because he denied Christ and did all in his power to restore paganism. Even in Athens, before Julian had thrown off the mask of piety; Saint Gregory saw what an unsettled mind he had, and said, What an evil the Roman State is nourishing (Orat. V, 24, PG 35:693). After their studies at Athens, Gregory became Basil s fellow ascetic, living the monastic life together with him for a time in the hermitages of Pontus. His father ordained him presbyter of the Church of Nazianzus, and Saint Basil consecrated him Bishop of Sasima (or Zansima), which was in the archdiocese of Caesarea. This consecration was a source of great sorrow to Gregory, and a cause of misunderstanding between him and Basil; but his love for Basil remained unchanged, as can be plainly seen from his Funeral Oration on Saint Basil (Orat. XLIII). About the Year 379, Saint Gregory came to the assistance of the Church of Constantinople, which had already been troubled for forty years by the Arians; by his supremely wise words and many labours he freed it from the corruption of heresy, and was elected Archbishop of that city by the Second Ecumenical Council, which assembled there in 381, and condemned Macedonius, Archbishop of Constantinople, the enemy of the Holy Spirit. When Saint Gregory came to Constantinople, the Arians had taken all the churches and he was forced to serve in a house chapel dedicated to Saint Anastasia the Martyr. From there he began to preach his famous five sermons on the Trinity, called the Triadica. When he left Constantinople two years later, the Arians did not have one church left to them in the city. Saint Meletius of Antioch (see Feb. 12), who was presiding over the Second Ecumenical Council, died in the course of it, and Saint Gregory was chosen in his stead; there he distinguished himself in his expositions of dogmatic theology. Having governed the Church until 382, he delivered his farewell speech - the Syntacterion, in which he demonstrated the Divinity of the Son - before 150 bishops and the Emperor Theodosius the Great; in this speech he requested, and received from all, permission to retire from the see of Constantinople. He returned to Nazianzus, where he lived to the end of his life, and reposed in the Lord in 391, having lived some sixty-two years. His extant writings, both prose and poems in every type of metre, demonstrate his lofty eloquence and his wondrous breadth of learning. In the beauty of his writings, he is considered to have surpassed the Greek writers of antiquity, and because of his God-inspired theological thought, he received the surname Theologian. Although he is sometimes called Gregory of Nazianzus, this title belongs properly to his father; he himself is known by the Church only as Gregory the Theologian. He is especially called Trinitarian Theologian, since in virtually every homily he refers to the Trinity and the one essence and nature of the Godhead.
SUNDAY 25 JANUARY 2015 11 Οἱ Ἅγιοι Τρεῖς Ἱεράρχες Ἡ αἰτία γιὰ τὴν εἰσαγωγὴ τῆς ἑορτῆς τῶν Τριῶν Ἱεραρχῶν στὴν Ἐκκλησία εἶναι τὸ ἑξῆς γεγονός: Κατὰ τοὺς χρόνους τῆς βασιλείας τοῦ Ἀλεξίου τοῦ Κομνηνοῦ (1081 1118), ὁ ὁποῖος διαδέχθηκε στὴ βασιλικὴ ἐξουσία τὸν Νικηφόρο Γ τὸν Βοτενειάτη (1078 1081), ἔγινε στὴν Κωνσταντινούπολη φιλονικία ἀνάμεσα σὲ λόγιους καὶ ἐνάρετους ἄνδρες. Ἄλλοι θεωροῦσαν ἀνώτερο τὸν Μέγα Βασίλειο, χαρακτηρίζοντάς τον μεγαλοφυΐα καὶ ὑπέροχη φυσιογνωμία. Ἄλλοι τοποθετοῦσαν ψηλὰ τὸν ἱερὸ Χρυσόστομο καὶ τὸν θεωροῦσαν ἀνώτερο ἀπὸ τὸν Μέγα Βασίλειο καὶ τὸν Γρηγόριο καί, τέλος, ἄλλοι, προσκείμενοι στὸν Γρηγόριο τὸν Θεολόγο, θεωροῦσαν αὐτὸν ἀνώτερο ἀπὸ τοὺς δύο ἄλλους, δηλαδὴ ἀπὸ τὸν Βασίλειο καὶ τὸν Χρυσόστομο. Ἡ φιλονικία αὐτὴ εἶχε σὰν ἀποτέλεσμα νὰ διαιρεθοῦν τὰ πλήθη τῶν Χριστιανῶν καὶ ἄλλοι ὀνομάζονταν «Ἰωαννίτες», ἄλλοι «Βασιλεῖτες» καὶ ἄλλοι «Γρηγορίτες». Στὴν ἔριδα αὐτὴ ἔθεσε τέλος ὁ Μητροπολίτης Εὐχαΐτων, Ἰωάννης ὁ Μαυρόπους. Αὐτός, κατὰ τὴν διήγηση τοῦ Συναξαριστοῦ, εἶδε σὲ ὀπτασία τοὺς μέγιστους αὐτοὺς Ἱεράρχες, πρῶτα καθένα χωριστὰ καὶ στὴ συνέχεια καὶ τοὺς τρεῖς μαζί. Αὐτοὶ τοῦ εἶπαν: «Ἐμεῖς, ὅπως βλέπεις, εἴμαστε ἕνα κοντὰ στὸν Θεὸ καὶ τίποτε δὲν ὑπάρχει ποὺ νὰ μᾶς χωρίζει ἢ νὰ μᾶς κάνει νὰ ἀντιδικοῦμε. Ὅμως, κάτω ἀπὸ τὶς ἰδιαίτερες χρονικὲς συγκυρίες καὶ περιστάσεις ποὺ βρέθηκε ὁ καθένας μας, κινούμενοι καὶ καθοδηγούμενοι ἀπὸ τὸ Ἅγιο Πνεῦμα, γράψαμε σὲ συγγράμματα καὶ μὲ τὸν τρόπο του ὁ καθένας, διδασκαλίες ποὺ βοηθοῦν τοὺς ἀνθρώπους νὰ βροῦν τὸν δρόμο τῆς σωτηρίας. Ἐπίσης, τὶς βαθύτερες θεῖες ἀλήθειες, στὶς ὁποῖες μπορέσαμε νὰ διεισδύσουμε μὲ τὸ φωτισμὸ τοῦ Ἁγίου Πνεύματος, τὶς συμπεριλάβαμε σὲ συγγράμματα ποὺ ἐκδώσαμε. Καὶ ἀνάμεσά μας δὲν ὑπάρχει οὔτε πρῶτος, οὔτε δεύτερος, ἀλλά, ἂν πεῖς τὸν ἕνα, συμπορεύονται δίπλα του καὶ οἱ δυὸ ἄλλοι. Σήκω, λοιπόν, καὶ δῶσε ἐντολὴ στοὺς φιλονικοῦντες νὰ σταματήσουν τὶς ἔριδες καὶ νὰ πάψουν νὰ χωρίζονται γιὰ ἐμᾶς. Γιατί 30 Ιανουαρίου ἐμεῖς, καὶ στὴν ἐπίγεια ζωὴ ποὺ εἴμασταν καὶ στὴν οὐράνια ποὺ μεταβήκαμε, φροντίζαμε καὶ φροντίζουμε νὰ εἰρηνεύουμε καὶ νὰ ὁδηγοῦμε σὲ ὁμόνοια τὸν κόσμο. Καὶ ὅρισε μία ἡμέρα νὰ ἑορτάζεται ἀπὸ κοινοῦ ἡ μνήμη μας καὶ καθὼς εἶναι χρέος σου, νὰ ἐνεργήσεις νὰ εἰσαχθεῖ ἡ ἑορτὴ στὴν Ἐκκλησία καὶ νὰ συνταχθεῖ ἡ ἱερὴ ἀκολουθία. Ἀκόμη ἕνα χρέος σου, νὰ παραδόσεις στὶς μελλοντικὲς γενιὲς ὅτι ἐμεῖς εἴμαστε ἕνα γιὰ τὸν Θεό. Βεβαίως καὶ ἐμεῖς θὰ συμπράξουμε γιὰ τὴ σωτηρία ἐκείνων ποὺ θὰ ἑορτάζουν τὴν μνήμη μας, γιατί ἔχουμε καὶ ἐμεῖς παρρησία ἐνώπιον τοῦ Θεοῦ». Ἔτσι ὁ Ἐπίσκοπος Εὐχαΐτων Ἰωάννης ἀνέλαβε τὴ συμφιλίωση τῶν διαμαχόμενων μερίδων, συνέστησε τὴν ἑορτὴ τῆς 30ης Ἰανουαρίου καὶ συνέγραψε καὶ κοινὴ Ἀκολουθία, ἀντάξια τῶν τριῶν Μεγάλων Πατέρων. Ἡ ἑορτὴ αὐτῆς τῆς Συνάξεως τοῦ Μεγάλου Βασιλείου, τοῦ Γρηγορίου τοῦ Θεολόγου καὶ τοῦ Ἰωάννου τοῦ Χρυσοστόμου, ἀποτελεῖ τὸ ὁρατὸ σύμβολο τῆς ἰσότητας καὶ τῆς ἑνότητας τῶν Μεγάλων Διδασκάλων, οἱ ὁποῖοι δίδαξαν μὲ τὸν ἅγιο βίο τοὺς τὸ Εὐαγγέλιο τοῦ Χριστοῦ. Εἶναι ἐκεῖνοι, οἱ ὁποῖοι ἐξ αἰτίας τῆς ταπεινώσεώς τους μπροστὰ στὴν ἀλήθεια, ἔχουν λάβει τὸ χάρισμα νὰ ἐκφράζουν τὴν καθολικὴ συνείδηση τῆς Ἐκκλησίας καὶ ὅ,τι διδάσκουν δὲν εἶναι ἁπλῶς δική τους σκέψη ἢ προσωπική τους πεποίθηση, ἀλλὰ εἶναι ἐπιπλέον ἡ ἴδια ἡ μαρτυρία τῆς Ἐκκλησίας, γιατί μιλοῦν ἀπὸ τὸ βάθος τῆς καθολικῆς της πληρότητας. We hear of the Lord's teaching about fasting and forgiveness and enter the season of the fast forgiving one another so that God will forgive them. If you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will forgive you; but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your heavenly Father forgive you your trespasses (Matthew 6:14). At the end of the service, everyone will pick a name out of a basket, from those attending, and then pray privately for that person throughout Lent. Godparent Sunday February 1, 2015 We ask your child(ren) to invite their Godparent(s) to attend Godparent Sunday and sit together in Church as we participate in the Divine Liturgy and receive Holy Communion as a family. Following Holy Communion, Godparents are asked to attend and participate in their Godchild s Sunday School class. Yiayiades, papoudes, aunts, uncles and cousins are invited if a Godparent cannot attend. 16
