St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 1:11-19 Πρὸς Γαλάτας 1:11-19 Prokeimenon. Mode 3. Psalm 46.6,1 Sing praises to our God, sing praises. Verse: Clap your hands, all you nations. BRETHREN, I would have you know that the gospel which was preached by me is not man's gospel. For I did not receive it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through a revelation of Jesus Christ. For you have heard of my former life in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God violently and tried to destroy it; and I advanced in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people, so extremely zealous was I for the traditions of my fathers. But when he who had set me apart before I was born, and had called me through his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son to me, in order that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not confer with flesh and blood, nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away into Arabia; and again I returned to Damascus. Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas, and remained with him fifteen days. But I saw none of the other apostles except James the Lord's brother.

7th Sunday of Luke The Gospel according to Luke 8:41-56 At that time, there came to Jesus a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue; and falling at Jesus' feet he besought him to come to his house, for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying. As he went, the people pressed round him. And a woman who had had a flow of blood for twelve years and had spent all her living upon physicians and could not be healed by anyone, came up behind him, and touched the fringe of his garment; and immediately her flow of blood ceased. And Jesus said, "Who was it that touched me?" When all denied it, Peter said, "Master, the multitudes surround you and press upon you!" But Jesus said, "Some one touched me; for I perceive that power has gone forth from me." And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. And he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace." While he was still speaking, a man from the ruler's house came and said, "Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacher any more." But Jesus on hearing this answered him, "Do not fear; only believe, and she shall be well." And when he came to the house, he permitted no one to enter with him, except Peter and John and James, and the father and mother of the child. And all were weeping and bewailing her; but he said, "Do not weep; for she is not dead but sleeping." And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. But taking her by the hand he called, saying, "Child, arise." And her spirit returned, and she got up at once; and he directed that something should be given her to eat. And her parents were amazed; but he charged them to tell no one what had happened.

GREEK ORTHODOX METROPOLIS OF NEW JERSEY ΙΕΡΑ ΜΗΤΡΟΠΟΛΙΣ ΝΕΑΣ ΙΕΡΣΕΗΣ 215 East Grove Street, Westfield, NJ, 07090-1656 Tel: (908) 301-0500 Fax: (908) 301-1397 Web: www.nj.goarch.org E-mail: metropolis@nj.goarch.org Veterans Day 2016 The Very Reverend and Reverend Clergy, Honorable Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, Esteemed Members of the Metropolitan Council, Esteemed Members of the Parish Councils, Philoptochos Sisterhood, Faculty and Students of the Catechetical and Greek Afternoon Schools, Directors and Participants of all of the Youth Organizations, and all devout Orthodox Christians of the Greek Orthodox Communities of our Holy Metropolis of New Jersey My Beloved, In a time of global uncertainty, of great violence, and of deep crisis both inside and outside the borders of our country, it is vital to remember and acknowledge the men and women who have protected and who continue to protect our country and places beyond its borders, and who fight for freedom and human rights in the world. They are the heroes whose courage and faith shape the society we are blessed to live in. No society is perfect, but the peace we enjoy today in our country should be appreciated as a gift of the Holy Spirit, embodied by these virtuous men and women who should be recognized for their commitment, courage and sacrifice. Earthly wars reflect the spiritual battle that mankind strives to win against the powers of evil, with the help of our good and loving God. Throughout its history, Orthodoxy has had profound respect for soldiers who give their own lives to protect the lives and safety of their neighbors. The Holy Church has canonized many soldiers, taking into account their Christian virtues and applying to them Christ s words: Greater love hath no man but this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. (John 15:13). In difficult situations where force must be used, the human heart should not be ensnared by passions and anger inspired by evil spirits. Only by conquering evil in our own hearts can we use force for the sake of justice. This is why the Orthodox Church takes special care of the armed forces, seeking to offer them the strength of the true faith and the resilience that comes from a genuine spiritual life. And this is why our Holy Metropolis has decided this year to honor all who have served in the US Armed Forces, alive or deceased, wholeheartedly expressing our sincere gratitude to them. Through the prayers of the holy, glorious great Martyrs George the Victorious, Demetrios the Myrrh-Bearer, Theodore the Tyron, and Theodore the General, O God, save your people and bless your inheritance. Let us pray for our Veterans, wishing those who are living many years of health and spiritual prosperity, and those who have already reposed in the Lord, may our God of Mercy grant them peace in the bosom of Abraham, and comfort their grieving families. Our Veterans, both living and deceased, must not only be never forgotten, but must be prayed for fervently by all Orthodox Christians and peace-loving people. To this end, I have directed that a yearly Memorial Service be conducted in all of the Parishes of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of New Jersey on the nearest Sunday prior to or following Veterans Day. Praying that Almighty God continues to protect all men and women who serve in our Armed Forces and praying that His peace and justice will be embraced by all peoples, I remain, With Paternal Love and Blessings, E V A N G E L O S Metropolitan of New Jersey
