Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ,We commemorate this blessed Feast of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary, honoring and celebrating her faith in God and the witness of the miraculous power of grace in her life through her willing obedience to His will. As a result of the amazing level of personal holiness and the abundance of grace, the Theotokos offers us a superb example of a relationship with God and a deep connection with Him that is essential for our lives and the sacred institution of the family. In addition to the impact of the power and presence of Christ on her as a person, the transformative influence of the grace of God guided the Theotokos as a Mother and in building and nurturing a family in which her Son was also the Son of God. Through faith and grace, she was instrumental in creating the perfect family, the Holy Family, from the birth of Christ and His perfection as an infant through His thirty years with His family in Nazareth. The person of the Theotokos as a superb model in creating a family as a holy institution is important for families today when faith and grace are essential in the midst of so many challenges. With this in mind, we celebrate the Feast of the Dormition following our 42nd Biennial Clergy-Laity Congress. A blessing that continues from the Congress is the ongoing reflection and emphasis of our theme, The Orthodox Christian Family: a Dwelling of Christ and a Witness of His Gospel. As we are seriously engaged in applying this theme in our homes and ministry, we are guided by the example of the Theotokos. Our focus on the family and the priority of ministry to the family has abundantly shown that its true identity and character is known when the family is connected to God. In the life and witness of the Theotokos and through the Incarnation, we are shown the necessity of this relationship. Certainly, the importance of the family is affirmed in that God, when He became man, was born as a baby in a family and was nurtured as an infant within a family under the holy care of the Theotokos. The life and repose of the Theotokos also reveal to us and to our families the power of the presence of Christ. This power, the result of her response of faith to the grace of God, was shown through her life-long commitment to His will and in the miracles associated with her repose. Through faith and grace she experienced the true and abundant life free from corruption and death, and through her witness we can see the power that is offered to the family. When the family is also a dwelling of Christ, the family has the power of His Resurrection and finds true life. Then, the love of Christ is felt and shared, and each member rejoices in the fact of being a dwelling of Christ. Finally, the life and Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos offer a genuine and faithful testimony of how the family should be a witness of the Gospel. The power that she has been given by God to accomplish mighty acts, the heights of holiness that she has attained in which she intercedes on our behalf, are due to her tremendous faith in the power and promise of the Gospel. Her life was dedicated to truth and to sharing the love of God with others, and her Dormition affirms that her hope in salvation and assurance in the promises of God were fulfilled. Through her life we can see that when the family is connected to God, and the lives and home of the family are filled with the presence of Christ, the family offers a true and beautiful witness of the grace, life, joy, and love that is presented in the Gospel. On this blessed Feast of the Dormition as we reflect on the beautiful and holy witness of the Theotokos to each of us and to the family, may we seek her supplications and intercessions on behalf of families. May we prayerfully ask for her compassion for our families. As she has been a refuge and shelter for so many down through the ages, may we also affirm her protection for families so that they can overcome the challenges and burdens of this life and be a dwelling of Christ and a witness of His Gospel. And may we offer thanksgiving and praise to God for her life and service as we commemorate her Dormition and honor her as the blessed Mother of our God. We are fools for Christ's sake, but you are wise in Christ. We are weak, but you are strong. You are held in honor, but we in disrepute. The Gospel of Matthew 17:14-23 At that time, a man came up to Him and kneeling before Him said, "Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and he suffers terribly; for often he falls into the fire, and often into the water. And I brought him to Your disciples, and they could not heal him." And Jesus answered, "O faithless and perverse generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him here to me." And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon came out of him, and the boy was cured instantly. Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, "Why could we not cast it out?" He said to them, "Because of your little faith. For truly I say to you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move hence to yonder place,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you. But this kind never comes out except by prayer and fasting." As they were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them, "The Son of man is to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill Him, and He will be raised on the third day."

Ἑορτή Κοιμήσεως τῆς Θεοτόκου Πρός τούς Σεβασμιωτάτους καί Θεοφιλεστάτους Ἀρχιερεῖς, τούς Εὐλαβεστάτους Ἱερεῖς καί Διακόνους, τούς Μοναχούς καί Μοναχές, τούς Προέδρους καί Μέλη τῶν Κοινοτικῶν Συμβουλίων, τούς Ἐντιμοτάτους Ἄρχοντες τοῦ Οἰκουμενικοῦ Πατριαρχείου, τά Ἡμερήσια καί Ἀπογευματινά Σχολεῖα, τίς Φιλοπτώχους Ἀδελφότητες, τήν Νεολαία, τίς Ἑλληνορθόδοξες Ὀργανώσεις καί ὁλόκληρο τό Χριστεπώνυμον πλήρωμα τῆς Ἱερᾶς Ἀρχιεπισκοπῆς Ἀμερικῆς. Προσφιλεῖς μου ἀδελφοί καί ἀδελφές ἐν Χριστῷ, Ἑορτάζουμε αὐτή τήν εὐλογημένη Ἑορτή τῆς Κοιμήσεως τῆς Ὑπεραγίας Θεοτόκου καί Ἀειπαρθένου Μαρίας, τιμῶντας τήν πίστη της στόν Θεό καί τήν μαρτυρία τῆς θαυματουργικῆς δυνάμεως τῆς χάριτος στή ζωή της διά τῆς προθύμου ὑπακοῆς της στό θέλημά Του. Ὡς ἀποτέλεσμα τοῦ θαυμαστοῦ ἐπιπέδου τῆς ἁγιότητός της καί τῆς ἀφθονίας χάριτος, ἡ Θεοτόκος μᾶς προσφέρει ἕνα ὑπέροχο παράδειγμα σχέσεως μέ τόν Θεό καί μίας στενῆς σχέσεως μαζί Του ἡ ὁποία εἶναι οὐσιαστική γιά τή ζωή μας καί τόν ἱερό θεσμό τῆς οἰκογενείας.ἐκτός ἀπό τήν ἐπίδραση τῆς δυνάμεως καί τῆς παρουσίας τοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐπί τοῦ ἀτόμου της, ἡ μεταμορφωτική ἐπιρροή τῆς χάριτος τοῦ Θεοῦ ὁδήγησε τήν Θεοτόκο ὡς Μητέρα στη δημιουργία καί φροντίδα μίας οἰκογενείας στήν ὁποία ὁ Υἱός της ἦτο ἐπίσης ὁ Υἱός τοῦ Θεοῦ. Διά τῆς πίστεως καί τῆς χάριτος τοῦ Θεοῦ ἡ Παναγία ἔπαιξε σπουδαῖο ρόλο στή δημιουργία τῆς τελείας οἰκογενείας, τῆς Ἁγίας Οἰκογενείας, ἀπό τή Γέννηση τοῦ Χριστοῦ καί τήν ἀνάπτυξή Του ὡς νήπιο μέχρι καί τό τριακοστό ἔτος τῆς ἡλικίας Του μέσα στήν οἰκογένειά Του στή Ναζαρέτ.Τό πρόσωπο τῆς Θεοτόκου ὡς ὑπέροχο παράδειγμα στή δημιουργία τῆς οἰκογενείας ὡς ἱεροῦ θεσμοῦ ἀποτελεῖ σημαντικό στοιχεῖο γιά τίς οἰκογένειες στίς ἡμέρες μας ὅπου ἡ πίστη καί ἡ χάρη εἶναι σημαντικές ἐν μέσῳ τόσο πολλῶν προκλήσεων. Ἔχοντας αὐτά κατά νοῦν, ἑορτάζουμε τήν Ἑορτή τῆς Κοιμήσεως ἀμέσως μετά τήν 42α Κληρικολαϊκή Συνέλευσή μας καί ἔχουμε τήν εὐλογία νά συνεχίζουμε τήν μελέτη τοῦ θέματός της, Ἡ Ὀρθόδοξη Χριστιανική Οἰκογένεια: Κατοικητήριον τοῦ Χριστοῦ καί Μαρτυρία τοῦ Εὐαγγελίου Του. Καθώς προσπαθοῦμε μέ σοβαρότητα νά ἐφαρμόσουμε τά διδάγματα πού ἀπορρέουν ἀπό τό θέμα αὐτό στά σπίτια καί στή διακονία μας, ὁδηγούμεθα ἀπό τό παράδειγμα τῆς Θεοτόκου.Ἡ προσήλωσή μας στήν οἰκογένεια καί ἡ προτεραιότητα τῆς διακονίας πρός αὐτήν ἔχει ἀποδείξει περίτρανα ὅτι ἡ ἀληθινή ταυτότητα καί ὁ χαρακτήρας τῆς οἰκογενείας ἐμφανίζεται ὅταν αὐτή εἶναι ἑνωμένη μέ τόν Θεό. Ἡ ἀνάγκη αὐτῆς τῆς σχέσεως παρουσιάζεται τόσο στή ζωή καί τή μαρτυρία τῆς Θεοτόκου ὅσο καί στό γεγονός τῆς Σαρκώσεως τοῦ Χριστοῦ. Ἀσφαλῶς, ἡ σπουδαιότητα τῆς οἰκογενείας ἐπιβεβαιώνεται ἀπό τό γεγονός ὅτι ὅταν ὁ Θεός ἔγινε ἄνθρωπος, γεννήθηκε ὡς βρέφος μέσα σέ μία οἰκογένεια καί ἀνετράφη ὡς νήπιο μέσα σέ οἰκογένεια ὑπό τήν ἱερή φροντίδα τῆς Θεοτόκου.Ἡ ζωή καί ἡ Κοίμηση τῆς Θεοτόκου ἀποκαλύπτουν ἐπίσης σ ἐμᾶς καί τίς οἰκογένειές μας τήν δύναμη τῆς παρουσίας τοῦ Χριστοῦ. Αὐτή ἡ δύναμη, τό ἀποτέλεσμα τῆς ἀπαντήσεως τῆς πίστεως τῆς Παναγίας στήν χάρη τοῦ Θεοῦ φάνηκε ἀπό τήν διά βίου ἀφοσίωσή της στό θέλημά Του καί τά θαύματα γύρω ἀπό τήν Κοίμησή της. Διά τῆς πίστεως καί τῆς χάριτος τοῦ Θεοῦ, βίωσε τήν ἀληθινή καί ἄφθονη ζωή ἀπαλλαγμένη ἀπό τήν φθορά καί τόν θάνατο. Διά τῆς μαρτυρίας της μποροῦμε νά δοῦμε τή δύναμη ἡ ὁποία προσφέρεται στήν οἰκογένεια. Ὅταν ἡ οἰκογένεια εἶναι ταυτοχρόνως καί κατοικητήριο τοῦ Χριστοῦ, ἡ οἰκογένεια αὐτή ἔχει τή δύναμη τῆς Ἀναστάσεώς Του καί βιώνει τήν ἀληθινή ζωή. Τότε, ἡ ἀγάπη τοῦ Χριστοῦ γίνεται ἁπτή καί μοιράζεται, καί κάθε μέλος χαίρεται μέ τό γεγονός ὅτι ἀποτελεῖ κατοικητήριο τοῦ Χριστοῦ.Τέλος, ἡ ζωή καί ἡ Κοίμηση τῆς Ὑπεραγίας Θεοτόκου προσφέρουν γνήσια καί ἀληθινή ὁμολογία τοῦ τρόπου μέ τόν ὁποῖον ἡ οἰκογένεια πρέπει νά εἶναι μαρτυρία τοῦ Εὐαγγελίου. Ἡ δύναμη ἡ ὁποία τῆς δόθηκε ἀπό τόν Θεό γιά νά πραγματοποιεῖ θαυματουργικές ἐνέργειες, καί τό μέγεθος τῆς ἁγιότητός της, διά τοῦ ὁποίου πρεσβεύει ὑπέρ ἡμῶν, ὀφείλονται στήν τεράστια πίστη της στή δύναμη καί τίς ἐξαγγελίες τοῦ Εὐαγγελίου. Ἡ ζωή της ἀφιερώθηκε στήν ἀλήθεια καί τή διάδοση τῆς ἀγάπης τοῦ Θεοῦ στούς ἄλλους, καί ἡ Κοίμησή της ἐπιβεβαιώνει ὅτι ἡ ἐλπίδα της γιά σωτηρία καί ἡ βεβαιότητά της γιά τίς ὑποσχέσεις τοῦ Θεοῦ πραγματοποιήθηκαν. Μέσα ἀπό τή ζωή της μποροῦμε νά διακρίνουμε ὅτι ὅταν ἡ οἰκογένεια εἶναι ἑνωμένη μέ τόν Θεό καί ἡ ζωή καί τό σπίτι τῆς οἰκογενείας εἶναι πλήρη τῆς παρουσίας τοῦ Χριστοῦ, ἡ οἰκογένεια αὐτή ἀποτελεῖ ἀληθινή καί ὡραία μαρτυρία τῆς χάριτος, ζωῆς, χαρᾶς καί ἀγάπης πού προσφέρει τό Εὐαγγέλιο.Στήν εὐλογημένη αὐτή Ἑορτή τῆς Κοιμήσεως, καθώς ἑορτάζουμε τήν ὡραία καί ἱερή μαρτυρία τῆς Θεοτόκου σέ καθέναν ἀπό ἐμᾶς καί στήν οἰκογένεια, εἴθε νά ζητήσουμε τίς ἱκεσίες καί πρεσβεῖες της γιά τίς οἰκογένειές μας. Εἴθε νά ζητήσουμε τήν εὐσπλαγχνία της γιά τίς οἰκογένειές μας. Καθώς ἡ ἴδια ἔχει ἀποτελέσει καταφύγιο καί στέγη γιά τόσο πολλούς κατά τήν διάρκεια τῶν αἰώνων, εἴθε νά ἀναγνωρίσουμε τήν προστασία της γιά τίς οἰκογένειες ἔτσι ὥστε νά μποροῦν νά ἀνταπεξέρχονται στίς προκλήσεις καί τά βάρη αὐτῆς τῆς ζωῆς καί νά ἀποτελεοῦν κατοικητήριο τοῦ Χριστοῦ καί μαρτυρία τοῦ Εὐαγγελίου Του. Καλούμεθα νά προσφέρουμε εὐχαριστία καί δοξολογία στόν Θεό γιά τή ζωή καί τή διακονία της καθώς ἑορτάζουμε τήν Κοίμησή της καί τήν τιμοῦμε ὡς τήν εὐλογημένη Μητέρα τοῦ Θεοῦ ἡμῶν.
