The Antidoron is not a sacrament, but it is reminiscent of the agape feast that followed worship in the ancient Christian Church. 2 Today s Readings: Their voice has gone out into all the earth. Verse: The heavens declare the glory of God. The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 4:9-16 Brethren, God has exhibited us apostles as last of all, like men sentenced to death; because we have become a spectacle to the world, to angels and to men. We are fools for Christ's sake, but you are wise in Christ. We are weak, but you are strong. You are held in honor, but we in disrepute. To the present hour we hunger and thirst, we are ill-clad and buffeted and homeless, and we labor, working with our own hands. When reviled, we bless; when persecuted, we endure; when slandered, we try to conciliate; we have become, and are now, as the refuse of the world, the off-scouring of all things. I do not write this to make you ashamed, but to admonish you as my beloved children. For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. The Gospel According to Matthew 17:14-23 At that time, a man came up to Jesus and kneeling before him said, "Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and he suffers terribly; for often he falls into the fire, and often into the water. And I brought him to your disciples, and they could not heal him." And Jesus answered, "O faithless and perverse generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him here to me." And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon came out of him, and the boy was cured instantly. Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, "Why could we not cast it out?" He said to them, "Because of your little faith. For truly I say to you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move hence to yonder place,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you. But this kind never comes out except by prayer and fasting." As they were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them, "The Son of man is to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him, and he will be raised on the third day." 2

Αναστρεφομένων δὲ αὐτῶν εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ιησοῦς μέλλει ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου παραδίδοσθαι εἰς χεῖρας ἀνθρώπων καὶ ἀποκτενοῦσιν αὐτόν, καὶ τῇ τρίτῃ ἡμέρᾳ ἐγερθήσεται. καὶ ἐλυπήθησαν σφόδρα The Dormition of our Most Holy Lady the Theotokos and Ever Virgin Mary Tuesday August 15 th 8308 Matins and Divine Liturgy 9:00 am Concerning the Dormition of the Theotokos, this is what the Church has received from ancient times from the tradition of the Fathers. When the time drew nigh that our Savior was well-pleased to take His Mother to Himself, He declared unto her through an Angel that three days hence, He would translate her from this temporal life to eternity and bliss. On hearing this, she went up with haste to the Mount of Olives, where she prayed continuously. Giving thanks to God, she returned to her house and prepared whatever was necessary for her burial. While these things were taking place, clouds caught up the Apostles from the ends of the earth, where each one happened to be preaching, and brought them at once to the house of the Mother of God, who informed them of the cause of their sudden gathering. As a mother, she consoled them in their affliction as was meet, and then raised her hands to Heaven and prayed for the peace of the world. She blessed the Apostles, and, reclining upon her bed with seemliness, gave up her all-holy spirit into the hands of her Son and God. With reverence and many lights, and chanting burial hymns, the Apostles took up that God-receiving body and brought it to the sepulchre, while the Angels from Heaven chanted with them, and sent forth her who is higher than the Cherubim. But one Jew, moved by malice, audaciously stretched forth his hand upon the bed and immediately received from divine judgment the wages of his audacity. Those daring hands were severed by an invisible blow. But when he repented and asked forgiveness, his hands were restored. When they had reached the place called Gethsemane, they buried there with honor the all-immaculate body of the Theotokos, which was the source of Life. But on the third day after the burial, when they were eating together, and raised up the artos (bread) in Jesus' Name, as was their custom, the Theotokos appeared in the air, saying "Rejoice" to them. From this they learned concerning the bodily translation of the Theotokos into the Heavens. 3

Βιογραφία Όπως είναι γνωστό, επάνω από το Σταυρό ο Κύριος μας Ιησούς Χριστός, έδωσε εντολή και την Παναγία μητέρα του παρέλαβε ο Ιωάννης ο Ευαγγελιστής στο σπίτι του, όπου διέμενε μαζί με τον αδελφό του Ιάκωβο και τη μητέρα του Σαλώμη, συγγενή της Θεοτόκου. Όταν δε ήλθε η στιγμή να τελειώσει την επίγεια ζωή της, άγγελος Κυρίου (η παράδοση λέει ότι ήταν ο Aρχάγγελος Γαβριήλ) της το έκανε γνωστό τρεις μέρες πριν. Η χαρά της Θεοτόκου υπήρξε μεγάλη, διότι θα συναντούσε το μονογενή της Υιό και Θεό όλων των ανθρώπων. Πήγε, λοιπόν, και προσευχήθηκε στο όρος των Ελαίων, όπου συνήθιζε να προσεύχεται και ο Κύριος Ιησούς. Έπειτα, γύρισε στο σπίτι του Ιωάννη, όπου έκανε γνωστή την επικείμενη κοίμηση της. Η παράδοση αναφέρει ότι την τρίτη ήμερα από την εμφάνιση του αγγέλου, λίγο πριν κοιμηθεί η Θεοτόκος, οι Απόστολοι δεν ήταν όλοι στα Ιεροσόλυμα, αλλά σε μακρινούς τόπους όπου κήρυτταν το Ευαγγέλιο. Τότε, ξαφνικά νεφέλη τους άρπαξε και τους έφερε όλους μπροστά στο κρεβάτι, όπου ήταν ξαπλωμένη η Θεοτόκος και περίμενε την κοίμηση της. Mαζί δε με τους Aποστόλους ήλθε και ο Aρεοπαγίτης Διονύσιος, ο Άγιος Iερόθεος ο διδάσκαλος του Διονυσίου, ο Aπόστολος Tιμόθεος, και οι λοιποί θεόσοφοι Iεράρχες. Όταν εκοιμήθη, με ψαλμούς και ύμνους την τοποθέτησαν στο μνήμα της Γεσθημανή. Eπειδή, κατά θείαν οικονομίαν, ένας από τους Aποστόλους (ο Θωμάς όπως λέει η παράδοση) δεν ήταν παρών στην κηδεία της Θεομήτορος, ζήτησε να ανοιχτεί ο τάφος ώστε να προσκυνήσει και αυτός το Σώμα της Θεοτόκου. 4

5 Έτσι, μετά από τρεις ήμερες, άνοιξαν τον τάφο και έκπληκτοι διαπίστωσαν ότι η Παναγία αναστήθηκε σωματικά και ανελήφθη στους ουρανούς. Και βέβαια, όλη η ανθρωπότητα, με ευγνωμοσύνη για τις πρεσβείες της στο Σωτήρα Χριστό, αναφωνεί: «Χαίρε, ώ Μήτερ τής ζωής». For details or questions, contact Helen Paliouras at: or elenipali@att.net 8309 Tikhon of Zadonsk celebrated August 13th Saint Tikhon of Zadonsk was born in 1724 into a very poor family of the Novgorod province, and was named Timothy in holy Baptism. In his youth he was sent to seminary in Novgorod where he received a good education and later taught Greek and other subjects. Having received the monastic tonsure with the name Tikhon, in the same year he was ordained deacon and priest, and appointed two years later as rector of the Seminary in Tver. In 1761 he was consecrated Bishop of Kexholm and Ladoga, and in 1763 nominated Bishop of Voronezh, a difficult diocese to administer because of its large size and transient population, which included many schismatics. Feeling the burden of the episcopacy to be beyond his strength, the Saint resigned in 1767, retiring first to the Monastery of Tolshevo, and later to the monastery at Zadonsk, where he remained until his blessed repose. In retirement, he devoted all his time to fervent prayer and the writing of books. His treasury of books earned him the title of "the Russian Chrysostom", whose writings he employed extensively; simple in style, replete with quotes from the Holy Scriptures, they treat mostly of the duties of Christians, with many parables taken from daily life. In them the Christian is taught how to oppose the passions and cultivate the virtues. A large collection of the Saint's letters are included in his works, and these give a wealth of spiritual guidance directed both to the laity and monastics. Saint Tikhon reposed in peace in 1783, at the age of fifty-nine. Over sixty years later, in 1845, when a new church was built in Zadonsk in place of the church where he was buried, it was necessary to remove his body. Although interred in a damp place, his relics were found to be whole and incorrupt; even his vestments were untouched by decay. Many miracles were worked by Saint Tikhon after his death, and some three hundred thousand pilgrims attended his glorification on August 13, He is one of the most beloved Russian Saints, and is invoked particularly for the protection and upbringing of children. 6

7 Άγιος Τύχων του Ζαντόνσκ ( 13 Αυγούστου), ο Ασκητής Επίσκοπος Ο Άγιος Τύχων γεννήθηκε το 1724 από φτωχούς γονείς στο χωριό Κορέτζκ της επισκοπής του Νόβγκοροντ. Μετά τον θάνατο του πατέρα του, πήγε να δουλέψει σε κάποιους χωρικούς για να βγάζει ίσα-ίσα το ψωμί του. Σπούδασε στην Εκκλησιαστική Σχολή και κατόπιν στο Ιεροδιδασκαλείο του Νόβγκοροντ, όπου έγινε καθηγητής ρητορικής, μόλις πήρε το δίπλωμά του. Είχε το αίσθημα της διαρκούς παρουσίας του Θεού και του άρεσε να διαβάζει ή να μελετά νύχτες ολόκληρες. Κάποτε όταν αγρυπνούσε, καθώς σκεφτόταν την αιώνια μακαριότητα, άνοιξε ξαφνικά ο ουρανός και ένα άφατο φως άστραψε μπροστά του δημιουργώντας μέσα του φλογερό πόθο για την μοναχική ζωή και την προσευχή. Μετά από τέσσερα χρόνια (1758) εκάρη μοναχός με το όνομα Τύχων και αφού χειροτονήθηκε πρεσβύτερος, την ίδια χρονιά, του εμπιστεύθηκαν την διεύθυνση του Ιεροδιδασκαλείου του Τβερ. Αν και επιθυμούσε να ζήσει ως μοναχός έγινε επίσκοπος σε ηλικία 37 ετών (1761) και σύντομα έγινε επίσκοπος του Βορονέζ, μία επισκοπή με τεράστια προβλήματα. Φρόντισε να ανεβάσει το πολιτιστικό επίπεδο και το ηθικό φρόνημα του κλήρου. Επισκεπτόταν τις ενορίες, δίδασκε ακούραστα, γραπτά και προφορικά τις αλήθειες του Ευαγγελίου που συνέδεε πάντα με το πρόσωπο του Χριστού. Ήταν πολύ πράος και ταπεινός και όταν θεωρούσε πως είχε πληγώσει κάποιον ζητούσε αμέσως συγχώρεση γονατίζοντας στη γη. Με την αγάπη και τον ζήλο που τον διέκρινε, δεν έκανε οικονομία στις φυσικές του δυνάμεις και μετά από πέντε χρόνια αναγκάσθηκε να παραιτηθεί από το αξίωμά του για λόγους υγείας (1768). Αποσύρθηκε στο ταπεινό μοναστήρι του Ζαντόνσκ όπου πέρασε τον υπόλοιπο βίο του με θεάρεστη άσκηση. Στο κελλί του αντί για κρεβάτι είχε ένα κιλίμι στρωμένο στη γη και δύο μαξιλάρια, και σκεπαζόταν με μία προβιά. Είχε μερικές εικόνες στον τοίχο, ένα τραπέζι, μία καρέκλα και μερικά βιβλία. Φορούσε ένα τραχύ μάλλινο ράσο και υποδήματα από πλεγμένο φλοιό και την σύνταξή του την μοίραζε στους φτωχούς. Η πόρτα του ήταν ανοιχτή σε όλους που έβρισκαν κοντά στον άγιο επίσκοπο τροφή, ρούχα και πνευματικούς λόγους παραμυθίας. Έβγαινε μόνο για να παρευρεθεί στην θεία Λειτουργία, ψάλλοντας με τους μοναχούς στον χορό, αλλά ποτέ δεν τελούσε ο ίδιος την Λειτουργία. Κοινωνούσε πάντα με δάκρυα στα μάτια. Μετά ασχολούνταν με τη συγγραφή των θεολογικών και ηθικών έργων του. Προικισμένος με εξαιρετική μνήμη, εμπλούτιζε τις ερμηνείες του με πλήθος παραθεμάτων από τις Γραφές, τους αγίους Πατέρες και τους Βίους των αγίων. Όταν υπαγόρευε τα έργα του, οι λόγοι του, εμπνευσμένοι από το άγιο Πνεύμα, κυλούσαν από το στόμια του με τόση γρηγοράδα που ο γραμματέας του δεν προλάβαινε να τα καταγράψει. Τη νύχτα αφοσιωνόταν στην προσευχή και τις μετάνοιες μέχρι το πρωί. Μία νύχτα εμφανίσθηκε σ αυτόν ο Χριστός, ματωμένος και γεμάτος πληγές, και ο άγιος έπεσε στα πόδια Του για να τα προσκυνήσει φωνάζοντας: «Εσύ, εσύ Σωτήρ μου, να έρχεσαι σε μένα!» Μιαν άλλη νύχτα, ενώ έκανε όπως συνήθιζε τον γύρο του ναού γονατίζοντας μπροστά σε κάθε πόρτα και ευχαριστώντας τον Θεό με δάκρυα, στράφηκε προς το ιερό και είδε από τους ουρανούς να ξεχύνεται ένα λαμπρό φως που καταύγασε όλο το μοναστήρι και άκουσε μία φωνή να λέει: «Ιδού τα αγαθά που έχουν ετοιμασθεί για εκείνους που αγαπούν τον Θεό». Μια άλλη φορά, είδε την Θεοτόκο ένθρονη πάνω από τα σύννεφα μαζί με τους αγίους Αποστόλους Πέτρο και Παύλο στο πλευρό της. Γονατίζοντας ο άγιος της ζήτησε τότε να μεσιτεύσει για να συνεχίσει ο Θεός να δίνει την χάρη του σε όλο τον κόσμο. Από το 1779, ο άγιος Τύχων έγινε τελείως έγκλειστος: δεν δεχόταν πια επισκέπτες, σπανίως μιλούσε σε αυτούς που τον υπηρετούσαν στο κελλί του, δεν πήγαινε πια στον ναό και έβγαινε μόνο τις εορτές για να επισκεφθεί τους φυλακισμένους. Στην απομόνωση αυτή διαλογιζόταν τον θάνατο μπροστά στο φέρετρο που είχε ετοιμάσει. Πέρασε έτσι τέσσερα χρόνια μέχρι την ημέρα όπου ύστερα από ένα όραμα προσβλήθηκε από ημιπληγία και υποχρεώθηκε να μένει κατάκοιτος. Νιώθοντας τις δυνάμεις του να εξαντλούνται, τρεις ημέρες πριν την εκδημία του, συγκέντρωσε τους κοντινούς του ανθρώπους Κάι ευεργέτες του και τους είπε δείχνοντας τον Σταυρό: «Δέομαι στον Κύριο για όλους σας». Ήσαν τα τελευταία λόγια του και τρεις ημέρες αργότερα κοιμήθηκε εν Κυρίω σε ηλικία πενήντα εννέα ετών. Η τιμή του άρχισε αμέσως μετά την τελευτή του και εξαπλώθηκε γρήγορα σε όλη την ρωσική γη. I can also arrange for the pick-up of any large or bulky items, and ensure that you receive a receipt for income tax purposes. If you wish to drop off donations yourself at the church, we are located at 8306 NC Highway 751, about ½ mile south of I40 Exit 274. We would appreciate it if you would call the church office at (919) to confirm when you will be dropping off your items. The office is generally open Monday through Friday 10am-2pm. Collection of items began on June 1 st, We can use almost any kind of merchandise in good condition, but there are some items that we are unable to accept. Examples of acceptable and non-acceptable items appear in the table below.
