Course Title : Social Demography I Course code : 221 Course type 1 : Mandatory by selection Level Course (Undergraduate / postgraduate ) : Undergraduate Year of study : Third year Semester: C Number of credits (ECTS): 6 Number didactic units: 3 Name of lecturer / teacher : Konstantinos Rontos Course content ( 100-300 words) 2 : This course introduces the student to the concept and content of Demography and its social dimension, namely the relationship of demographic factor with the wider society. Specifically, for the course of study, initially, is taught the population in terms of size and structure and the spatial and temporal evolution of these. The Demographic factors and the causes and consequences of them, are even studied. Emphasis is given to the sources of demographic data and to the production of demographic statistics. 1 Mandatory, selection, etc., depending on the categories of courses which are available in each section. 2 Description of the course content and optionally the weekly distribution of curriculum (briefly).
Week 1: Introduction ( meaning and content of Demography, Demography relationship with the social sciences, the concept of Social Demography ) 2nd and 3rd Week: The sources of Demographic Data, demographic statistics and their quality for Greece Week 4 : Iintroduction to Demographic Methods and measurements 5th Week: The status and trends of the population (size and demographic, geographic, economic and social characteristics indicators construction). Exponential model for evolution of the total population. Week 6: The Marriage rate and the Divorce rate (Concept and measurement, modern developments). 7th Week: The Birth rate- the fertility (measurement and determinants) Week 8: Mortality, Natural increase (measurement and determining factors) 9th Week: The Progress=test 10th Week: The Migratory flows (meaning, types, measurement - idexes, estimate of the net migration using the method of civil status records, causes and consequences of internal and external migration ). 11th Week : The Interaction of demographic - social and demographic factors. Week 12: Exercises recurrence 13th week: Exercises recurrence, presenting any work, summary. The purpose of the course is to provide basic knowledge on the subject of Demography, that the student might be familiar with the relevant concepts and become competent to handle demographic data and apply techniques of demographic analysis in combination with the methods of statistical analysis which has already been taught in other courses. Also, the student understands the nature and size of modern demographic problems and the causes of demographic developments as well as the severity of the consequences of adverse demographic developments in society and economy. Teaching and learning methods (up to 100 words) : The teaching of the course includes theory, learning technical analysis, solving exercises and practical applications, laboratory format, using EXCEL and the statistical package SPSS.
Emphasis is given to familiarize the student with the sources of demographic factors in practice and in training of demographic statistics with real raw data in a way tha,t outside the application of technical skil, the purpose is to obtain the demographic analysis and the feeling of real demographic situation in Greece and abroad. Methods of assessment / rating (up to 100 words) : The evaluation of the students in the lesson is clear from the written exam at the end of the semester. During these the basic skills on the theoretical are examined and also the solution of problems, that require demographic analysis. During the semester, optional test is conducted, which, if it is successful, the student is relieved of further formal examinations.
