ANNUNCIATION GREEK ORTHODOX CATHEDRAL Norfolk, VA Rev. Presbyter George Bessinas, M.Div., Dean Rev. Protopresbyter Constantine Rogakos, Ph. D., Associate SUNDAY BULLETIN AND WEEKLY NEWS Feast of Theodosius the Cenobiarch Sunday After Holy Theophany Sunday, January 11, 2015
Sunday, January 11, 2015 Orthros (Matins): Divine Liturgy (of St. John Chrysostom) 8:45 AM 10:00 AM On January 11, we commemorate our devout father Theodosios, the Cenobiarch and Mentor of the Wilderness. On this day is the Synaxis in honor of the myriads of holy Angels. It was held in the Martyrium of St. Anastasia at the Colonnade of Domninus. On this day we also commemorate St. Stephen in Placidiane, and St. Theodore and St. Agapios the Archimandrite. On this day St. Major died by torture. On this day devout St. Vitalius reposed in peace.devout St. Theodosios, Abbot of Philotheou Monastery on Athos, who also became Bishop of Trebizond, reposed in peace. Resurrectional APOLYTIKION Mode 1 When the angelic powers appeared at Your grave, the soldiers guarding it feared and became as dead. And standing by the sepulcher was Mary who was seeking Your immaculate body. You devastated Hades, not afflicted by it. You went to meet the virgin, and granted eternal life. You resurrected from the dead. O Lord, glory to You. APOLYTIKION of Holy Theophany As You were baptized in the Jordan, O Lord, then the worship of the Trinity became manifest, for the voice of the Father bore witness to You, naming You the Beloved Son; and the Spirit, in the form of a dove, confirmed the certainty of the word. O Christ God, who appeared and illumined the world, glory to You. APOLYTIKION of Theodosios, the Cenobiarch With the rivers of your tears you made the barren desert bloom; and with your sighs from deep within, you made your labors bear their fruits a hundredfold; and you became a star, illuminating the world by your miracles, O O Theodosios our devout father. our devout father. Intercede with Christ our God, for the salvation of our souls. APOLYTIKION of the Annunciation Today is the beginning of our salvation, The revelation of the eternal mystery! The Son of God becomes the Son of the Virgin. As Gabriel announces the coming of Grace. Together with him let us cry to the Theotokos: Rejoice, O Full of Grace, The Lord is with You! KONTAKION (of Holy Theophany) You appeared today to us on earth, O Master, and Your light was signed on us who cry aloud to You and say with understanding, O Christ our God: You came and shone forth, O Light unapproachable.
Prokeimenon: Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His holy one..grave Mode. Psalm 115 (116) BRETHREN, grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ's gift. Therefore it is said, "When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men." (in saying, "He ascended," what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is he who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.) And his gifts were that some should be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. EPISTLE READING St. Paul's Letter to the Ephesians 4:7-13 Ο ΑΠΟΣΤΟΛΟΣ Πρὸς Ἐφεσίους 4:7-13 Ἀδελφοί, ἑνὶ ἑκάστῳ ἡμῶν ἐδόθη ἡ χάρις κατὰ τὸ μέτρον τῆς δωρεᾶς τοῦ Χριστοῦ.
THE GOSPEL READING Gospel of Matthew 4:12-17 At that time, Jesus heard that John had been arrested, He withdrew into Galilee; and leaving Nazareth He went and dwelt in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: "The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, toward the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned." From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." ALTAR BOYS Peter Milonas, Christopher Milonas, A.J. Thank you for your generosity during the 2014 stewardship campaign! The 2014 Stewardship contributions are $383,709.22 which is a new Cathedral record. Update What shall I give back to the Lord for all He rendered to me? Psalm 115:3 As you decide how much to pledge for 2015, we ask you to consider the following: The 2015 Cathedral operating budget you approved in the General Assembly is $675,000. Our Cathedral needs $1,850 each day to exist for you, for all of us and for the glory of God. Consider pledging a day for your birthday, or for your anniversary, or for your nameday. No one shall appear before the Lord your God empty-handed. Every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing the Lord God gave you. Deuteronomy 16:16-17 If you have already pledged more than $1,850, thank you very much. If you are able, please consider increasing your pledge to this amount. Remember, every contribution is precious and valued especially the two mites given by the widow. So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver. 2 Corinthians 9:7 Do not let alms giving and faithfulness forsake you, but hang them upon your neck. Honor the Lord from your righteous labors, and offer Him the first fruits from the fruits of your righteousness, that your storehouses may be filled with abundance of grain, and your wine press may gush with wine. Proverbs 3: 3,9-10
