Dear Friends, God has blessed me with a wonderful opportunity! In June I will be serving as a member of the Orthodox Christian Mission Center (OCMC) 2013 Albania Youth Orthodox Mission Team. My team will help administer a summer camp at the Children s Home of Hope, a foster care environment for children. It is located on the grounds of the Shen Vlash Monastery and Resurrection of Christ Theological Academy in Durres, Albania. After more than fifty years of being outlawed in Albania, Christianity is enjoying a rebirth. The country is currently over 60% Muslim and 20% Orthodox. Our team s goal is to help build up the Church there by assisting with a youth ministry program that will impact youth now and for generations to come. While offering summer camp activities, team members will provide a witness of the Holy Orthodox Faith and Christian love, encouraging youth in their Christian walk. As I begin this journey, I humbly ask for your prayers. Please pray for the needs of the Albanian people, as well as those in other countries where the Church needs to grow. Also, pray for and learn about all the Orthodox missionaries and teams, who serve in these countries. You can learn more about the Albania team and all Orthodox missions at the OCMC website: www.ocmc.org. As I continue learning what is expected of a mission team member, I know it is a blessing of which I am not truly worthy and more than I am capable of doing myself. However, with your prayers, I know God will make it happen. In Christ, A BIG GREEK KITCHEN THANK YOU Greek Kitchen Chairpersons Eleftheria and Petros Demarinis extend a huge thank you to all individuals that assisted with food preparations before, during, and after the Greek Festival. It was an excellent year for Dinners and Salads thanks to the efforts of many. Faith Kyame

Sunday of the Samaritan Woman When thou camest to obtain perishable water, O woman, thou didst draw forth living water, whereby thou didst wash away the stains of thy soul. On this day, the fifth Sunday of Pascha, we commemorate the conversation of the Lord with the Samaritan woman during which He openly confesses to be the Messiah. Derived from the Hebrew word for oil, messa, Messiah means Christ, or the anointed one. On this Sunday Christ works a miracle at Jacob s Well. Jacob, who had come from Mesopotamia in the nineteenth century before Christ, bought a piece of land where there was a well. Later, before he died in Egypt, he left that piece of land as a special inheritance to his son Joseph (Genesis 49:22). This special place near the town of Sichar was in the vicinity of Mount Somor, where the Samaritans inhabited many cities. The Hebrews, who originally lived on this mountain, were not called Samaritans but Israelites. During the reign of King Pekah, they offended God by falling into idolatry and other iniquities. Later, they were instructed in the Jewish faith but accepted only the Pentateuch of Moses, rejecting the Prophets and the rest of Holy Scripture, and continued to worship their own idols. Nonetheless, they thought themselves to be descendants of Abraham and Jacob. Pious Jews, however, named these Judaizing and idolatrous people Samaritans since they lived in Samaria, the former leading city of the Israelites, as well as in the other towns thereabout. The Jews rejected them as heathen and foreigners and had no communion with them at all. Jesus came to Sichar at midday and being hot and weary from His journey sat down at Jacob s Well. While the Disciples were away purchasing food, a woman came from the city to draw water. Jesus asked her for some, but noting His accent and apparel the woman excused herself by saying that the Jews had no dealings with the Samaritans (John 4:9). Jesus raised their conversation to a higher level by introducing the idea of spiritual water, which connotes abundance and cleansing power since the Holy Spirit is always likened to water and fire. The woman was sure that He had no such water for the well was deep and He had no bucket. Instead, she referred to their forefather Jacob, saying that he had dug the well from which he and his children had drunk. She also commended the rich resources of the well, its usefulness, and its coolness. Christ again spoke about water that for those who drank of it would not thirst. Intrigued, the woman asked for this water, but He told her to call her husband since His words needed to be more firmly understood. She denied having a husband, but knowing all things Jesus replied, Thou hast well said, I have no husband for thou hast had five husbands, which the Law forbiddeth, and the sixth whom thou now hast, since thou livest with him unlawfully, is not thy husband (John 4:17-18). Some interpreters consider the five husbands to be the five books of Moses, which the Samaritans accepted, and the sixth to be the very words of Christ, which were not yet hers since Grace had not yet been poured upon her. Other interpreters suppose that they are the five laws given by God in Paradise, after the banishment of Adam and Eve from Paradise, in the time of Noah, in the time of Abraham, and in the time of Moses and the sixth to be the Gospel, which she did not yet have. There are still others who say that they are the five senses. Calling Him a Prophet, the woman asked Him where one should worship: should it be on Mount Gerizim or in Jerusalem? The Samaritans did not believe that God existed everywhere but only on Mount Gerizim, where they worshipped and where Abraham first set up an altar to God. The Jews, likewise, also said that one must worship God only in Jerusalem and, for this reason, Jews from everywhere gathered there for feasts. Christ replied that the salvation of the world was of the Jews but that God is non-material and that those who would be vouchsafed to worship Him would do so, not with sacrifices as they had thitherto, but in Spirit and truth. In this way they would not only know God but would also know Him in the Holy Spirit and in the Son for the Son is the Truth. The woman then said, We have heard from the Scriptures that the Messiah cometh Who is the Christ (John 4:25). Jesus, foreknowing the woman s gratitude, said, I am He. The Disciples returned and were amazed at Christ s extreme condescension in talking with a woman. They besought Him to eat, but He spoke to them about eternal food, namely the salvation of mankind and how they needed to harvest the labors of the Prophets. When the woman returned to the city and recounted what had happened to her, all the inhabitants were aroused. Convinced that she would not have reproached herself unless she had come to know something of importance, they went to Christ, implored Him to stay with them, and persuaded Him to remain for two days during which time He worked many miracles. The Samaritan woman, subsequently named Photine by Christ, along with her seven sons, received the crown of martyrdom after enduring much hardship and countless torments in the reign of Nero. Her feast is kept on February 26. It should be known that the Emperor Justinian transferred to the Great Church of Hagia Sophia not only the mouth of Jacob s Well, which he placed on a well outside the narthex of the church, but also the stone on which Christ sat and conversed with the Samaritan woman. To this day, they remain there, healing every kind of disease and providing remedies, especially for those suffering from fevers and chills. By the intercessions of Thy Martyr Photine, O Christ God, have mercy on us. Amen.

COMMAGERE CHRISMATION RECEPTION To celebrate their chrismation as Orthodox Christians, Ana Commagere and her children invite everyone to a casual reception on the Cathedral grounds after church services next Sunday, June 9, 2013. There will be food for all and a waterslide for the children. Help welcome the Commagere family into our faith as you share their joy and hospitality. Resurrection Apolytikion Tone 4 When the women Disciples of the Lord had learned from the Angel the joyful message of the Resurrection and had rejected the ancestral decision, they cried aloud to the Apostles triumphantly: Death has been despoiled, Christ God has risen, granting His great mercy to the world. Apolytikion of Mid-Pentecost Plagal Tone 4 Mid-way in the feast, refresh my thirsty soul with the flowing waters of piety. For You cried out to all, O Savior, "Let him who thirsts come to me and drink. You, O Christ our God, are the Fountain of Life, glory to You. Apolytikion of the Holy Trinity Plagal Tone 4 Blessed are You, O Christ our God, who made fishermen all-wise, sending upon them the Holy Spirit and, through them, netting the world. O Loving One, glory to You. Kontakion Plagal Tone 3 Though You went down into the tomb, You destroyed Hades' power, and You rose the victor, Christ God, saying to the myrrh-bearing women, "Rejoice!" and granting peace to Your disciples, You who raise up the fallen. THE EPISTLE Acts of the Apostles 11:19-30 IN THOSE DAYS, those apostles who were scattered because of the persecution that arose over Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia and Cyprus and Antioch, speaking the word to none except Jews. But there were some of them, men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who on coming to Antioch spoke to the Greeks also, preaching the Lord Jesus. And the hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number that believed turned to the Lord. News of this came to the ears of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch. When he came and saw the grace of God, he was glad; and he exhorted them all to remain faithful to the Lord with steadfast purpose; for he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And a large company was added to the Lord. So Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul; and when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they met with the church, and taught a large company of people; and in Antioch the disciples were for the first time called Christians. Now in these days prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. And one of them named Agabos stood up and foretold by the Spirit that there would be a great famine over all the world; and this took place in the days of Claudius. And the disciples determined, every one according to his ability, to send relief to the brethren who lived in Judea, and they did so, sending it to the elders by the hand of Barnabas and Saul.

THE GOSPEL John 4: 5-42 At that time, Jesus came to a city of Samaria, called Sychar, near the field that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Jacob's well was there, and so Jesus, wearied as he was with his journey, sat down beside the well. It was about the sixth hour. There came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give me a drink." For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. The Samaritan woman said to him, "How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria?" For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, 'Give me a drink,' you would have asked him and he would have given you living water." The woman said to him, "Sir, you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep; where do you get that living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, and his sons, and his cattle?" Jesus said to her, "Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst; the water that I shall give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw." Jesus said to her, "Go, call your husband, and come here." The woman answered him, "I have no husband." Jesus said to her, "You are right in saying, 'I have no husband'; for you have had five husbands, and he whom you now have is not your husband; this you said truly." The woman said to him, "Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. Our fathers worshiped on this mountain; and you say that Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship." Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for such the Father seeks to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth." The woman said to him, "I know that the Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ); when he comes, he will show us all things." Jesus said to her, "I who speak to you am he." Just then his disciples came. They marveled that he was talking with a woman, but none said, "What do you wish?" or, "Why are you talking with her?" So, the woman left her water jar and went away into the city and said to the people, "Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?" They went out of the city and were coming to him. Meanwhile the disciples besought him, saying "Rabbi, eat." But he said to them, "I have food to eat of which you do not know." So the disciples said to one another, "Has anyone brought him food?" Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of him who sent me, and to accomplish his work. Do you not say, 'There are yet four months, then comes the harvest'? I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see how the fields are already white for harvest. He who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together. For here the saying holds true, 'One sows and another reaps.' I sent you to reap that for which you did not labor; others have labored, and you have entered into their labor." Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the woman's testimony. "He told me all that I ever did." So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days. And many more believed because of his word. They said to the woman, "It is no longer because of your words that we believe, for we have heard ourselves, and we know that this is indeed Christ the Savior of the world."
