The Holy Apostle and Evangelist Luke Τοῦ Ἁγίου Ἀποστόλου καί Εὐαγγελιστοῦ Λουκᾶ October 18 The holy Apostle and Evangelist Luke was born in Antioch. In his youth, he excelled in his studies of Greek philosophy, medicine and art. During the ministry of the Lord Jesus on earth, Luke came to Jerusalem, where he saw the Savior face to face, heard His saving teaching and was witness to His miraculous works. Coming to belief in the Lord, St. Luke was numbered among the Seventy Apostles, and was sent out to preach. After the resurrection, on Pascha, Luke and Cleopas saw the resurrected Lord on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24). Following the descent of the Holy Spirit, Luke returned to Antioch and there became a fellow worker of the Apostle Paul and traveled with him, converting Jews and pagans to the Christian Faith. Their journeys took them through Asia Minor and Macedonia, to Rome. The Apostle Paul writes to the Colossians from Rome, "Luke, the beloved physician, greets you" (Colossians 4:14), conveying the greeting of his fellow laborer in the Lord. Following the martyrdom of the great Apostle Paul, Saint Luke Luke preached the Gospel throughout Italy, Dalmatia, Macedonia and other regions. Saint Luke painted three icons of the most holy Theotokos, as well as of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul. Hence, Saint Luke is considered to be the founder of Christian iconography. In old age, Saint Luke visited Libya and Upper Egypt. From Egypt he returned to Greece, where he continued to preach and convert many with great zeal despite his old age. Saint Luke wrote his Gospel in Greek, following those of Saints Matthew and Mark, in about the year 60, and he also wrote the Acts of the Apostles, dedicating both works to Theophilus, the governor of Achaia. Luke was eighty-four years old when wicked idolaters tortured him for the sake of Christ and hanged him from an olive tree in the town of Thebes, in Boetia. His miracle-working relics were transported to Constantinople during the 4th-century, under the reign of Emperor Constantius (357AD), the son of Constantine. In 1204, the Crusadors of the IV Crusade stole the relic from Constantinople and transported it to Padova (Padua) in Italy and it is still located there in the Catholic church of Santa Justina at the centre of the city. In 1992, then-metropolitan Ieronymos of Thebes and Livadia (later Archbishop of Greece) requested the return of a "a significant fragment of the relics of Saint Luke to be placed on the site where the holy tomb of the Evangelist is located and venerated today." This prompted a scientific investigation of the relics in Padua, and by numerous lines of empirical evidence confirmed that these were the remains of an individual of Syrian descent who died between 130 and 400 A.D. The Bishop of Padua then delivered to Metropolitan Ieronymos the rib of St. Luke that was closest to his heart to be kept at his tomb in Thebes, Greece. The tomb works miracles even today. On December 22, 1997 at 1:30 pm myrrh appeared on the tomb's marble and since then the interior of the marble sarcophagus is fragrant. The olive tree on which he was hung is still living to the right side of the cemetery in Thebes. On the right side of the sanctuary of the church in Thebes is a Roman sarcophagus where the body of Saint Luke had been placed. This tomb belonged to a Roman family of the 2nd-century BC but later on it was emptied and the Christians of Thebes used it to "honour" the relics of Saint Luke since it was a majestic tomb. His emblem is the calf, the third symbolical beast mentioned by Ezekiel (1:10), which is a symbol of Christ's sacrificial and priestly office, as Saint Irenaeus says. 1

What shall we call you, O glorious one? Intercede for the salvation of our souls. Stichos 6 For He has made His mercy to prevail over us, and the truth of the Lord abides to the ages. What now shall I call you, O wondrous one? True beholder of the Wisdom of doctrine; the recorder of the Acts and teachings of the Apostles; the unshakable pillar of piety; indestructible bulwark of the Church? Many are your deeds, and greater yet your gifts. Intercede for the salvation of our souls. Idiomelon of the Apostle Tone Plagal 2 Anatolios Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. O Apostle of Christ, writer of the divine teachings, and foundation stone of the Church: with divine proclamations you have truly healed the hearts of men in the gloom of ignorance, which had entered into the abyss of despair; and you have saved them from the tempest of the threefold waves, as a follower and disciple of Paul, the chosen vessel, and imitator of him. Wherefore we entreat you, O 4 Αἰνεῖτε τὸν Κύριον πάντα τὰ ἔθνη, ἐπαινέσατε αὐτὸν πάντες οἱ λαοί. most worthy Luke, O jewel of the Antiochians. Intercede before the Savior and God, for those who in faith celebrate your honored memory. Aposticha Prosomoia Stichera of the Apostle Tone Plagal 1 Rejoice strugglers Grace has poured forth from your lips, O Luke, and you became a tongue of fire, O Apostle, emitting words of light to those who were worthy of such preaching, but filling those who desired darkness with burning arrows, as you recorded doctrine, the precious Gospel; for those who truly sought life you were shown to be the fragrance of life, but to those who did not love life you were the smell of death, as your teacher Paul has said. Yet, grant us peace, life, light, and great mercy. Their sound has gone forth into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world. In your words, O initiate of the mysteries, as you yourself have said, we have recognized the certitude of the inspired Word of God; for you decided to set in writing for us the whole sequence of events which were fulfilled, precisely as they were transmitted to you by Εἶτα «Πληρώσωµεν τὴν ἑσπερινὴν δέησιν...,» καὶ Εὐχῆ τῆς Κεφαλοκλισίας. Yet, you were their equal and peer as a servant of the incarnate Word, the One Whom you beheld in Emmaus after His resurrection, when with a burning heart you sat at table and ate with Him in the company of Kleopas. Also fill the souls of us who honor you with His divine warmth. The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament proclaims the work of His hands. Rejoice, you who alone recorded for us the greeting of the Archangel, the joyful annunciation to the pure one; the conception of the Baptist who from his mother's womb called her the Bearer of the Lord; you described the incarnation of the Word; His temptations and miracles; His words and sufferings; His cross, death, and resurrection which you yourself beheld; the descent of the Holy Spirit; the account of the Acts, especially those of Paul whom you accompanied: as physician and initiate of the mysteries, and as a luminary of the Church, preserve that Church forever. Then the following idiomelon Tone 4 Basil Grace has been poured forth on Your lips. With wisdom as your rod, O all-blessed Luke, upon the noetic waters you fathomed the depths, and you fished the souls of believers from the pit of death. As a disciple of Paul, you purified your heart in the light of the Spirit; and you enlightened the nation by your teachings, and you healed the evil of passions by your miracles. Always pray to Christ our God to save our souls. Idiomelon Tone Plagal 2 Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
