Sunday, March 19, 2017 Hymns Following the Gospel (Small Entrance) ANNUAL FLAG RAISING All are welcome to join the Greek School for the Annual Flag Raising in honor of Greek Independence Day at the City Hall in Peabody on Wednesday, March 22nd at 3:30. Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Second- Mode When the angelic powers appeared at Your grave, the soldiers guarding it feared and became as dead. And standing by the sepulcher was Mary who was seeking Your immaculate body. You devastated Hades, not afflicted by it. You went to meet the virgin, and granted eternal life. You resurrected from the dead. O Lord, glory to You. Apolytikion for Sun. of the Holy Cross in the First Mode Save, O Lord, Thy people and bless Thine inheritance; grant Thou unto the faithful victory over adversaries. And by the power of Thy Cross do Thou preserve Thy commonwealth. St. Vasilios 1 st Mode Your message was carried throughout the world. As it received your mighty word, By which you divinely made manifest And clarified the nature of existing things You set in order the customs of men, You who are royal priesthood! Holy Father, intercede with Christ our God To grant us His great mercy. Seasonal Kontakion in Plagal Fourth Mode To you, Theotokos, invincible Defender, having been delivered from peril, I, your city, dedicate the victory festival as a thank offering. In your irresistible might, keep me safe from all trials, that I may call out to you: "Hail, unwedded bride!" EPISTLE READINGS Prokeimenon. Plagal Second Mode. Psalm 27.9,1. O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance. Verse: To you, O Lord, I have cried, O my God. REMEMBERING OUR VETERANS The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 4:14-16; 5:1-6. BRETHREN, since we have a high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. Because of this he is bound to offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not take the honor upon himself, but he is called by God, just as Aaron was. So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, "Thou art my Son, today I have begotten thee"; as he says also in another place, "Thou art a priest for ever, after the order of Melchizedek." Plagal Second Mode.

GREEK INDEPENDENCE DAY PARADE Please join the Greek School in representing our community in the Greek Independence Day Parade. VOTIVE CANDLE SAFETY Votive Candle Safety We have noticed that increasingly the faithful have been lighting candles and placing them in front of the Iconostasis (icon screen). We have also noticed that more and more of the faithful are having their votive candles brought into the Holy Altar. Because of the number of votive candles, twice we have had wax spills on the chairs in the Altar. Furthermore, we often find that candles have been left burning in the Altar and in front of the Iconostasis and this is a fire hazard. The decision of the Parish Council, along with Father Chris, is that votive candles are to remain in the Narthex of the church where they remain in safety glass in case the plastic insert catches fire and not brought into the Altar or placed in front of the Iconostasis. We thank you for your cooperation. 20 5

GOSPEL READING Sunday of the Holy Cross The Reading is from Mark 8:34-38; 9:1 The Lord said: "If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power." Sunday of the Holy Cross 6 19

The bowl you decorate will be one of hundreds available to the public at the Empty Bowl fundraiser on May 4. For a minimum donation of $15 ($10 for children under 10), each guest will select a bowl, enjoy a simple meal of soup and bread, and take the bowl home as a reminder of hunger in our communities. If you would like a Trisagion at the graveside during the week you are kindly asked to make an appointment by calling the church office. HOSPITAL VISITS Due to HIPAA privacy rules, hospitals no longer provide a list of Orthodox patients to us. Therefore, if you or a loved one are, or will be, in the hospital, please contact the church office for a pastoral visit. Also, please notify the office if a friend or family member is in a rehab center, nursing home, assisted living facility or under hospice care. WELCOME TO OUR VISITORS Everyone is welcome in the Orthodox Church and may receive the blessed bread (antidoron) at the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy. Sadly, the divisions in the church prompt us all to work towards reunited Christianity. The culmination of this reunion will be the ability of all Christians to receive the Eucharist together. Until that blessed day arrives, only Orthodox Christians who are in good sacramental order are permitted to receive Holy Communion in the Orthodox Church. If you have any questions or concerns please speak with Father Chris. ALTAR DONATIONS LITURGY LIGHTS In loving memory of Michael C. Lignos. The Investment Committee will convene a meeting on April, 2017 and will unseal the proposals compared to and in consideration with the needs of the church. The Investment Committee may, in its discretion, recommend award of the grantable amount of the annual investment proceeds of the Endowment Fund to any grant applicant(s)which may be one or more Saint Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church Community parish organizations and/or individuals. The grant recommendation(s) will be presented to the Parish Council for acceptance and to the 2017 Spring General Assembly for ratification. According to the Investment Policy, the principal of the Saint Vasilios Endowment Fund must remain inviolate and irrevocable. As such, at each Spring General Assembly being the first, the Investment Committee will propose and recommend its use of the grant money according to the needs of Saint Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church and in consideration of the grant proposals received, which recommended use(s) must be approved by a majority of the General Assembly. No annual grant giving is mandatory.
