CITY COUNCIL VOTES 5-0 TO PUT PROPERTY INTO REDEVELOPMENT THANK YOU TO ALL WHO CAME OUT IN SUPPORT. Thanks to the tremendous community presence by the Saint Demetrios congregation, which filled the City Hall Chambers, the hallway and the stairwells. Our church was not to be ignored. Our community followed the law precisely to have our community property placed into redevelopment. This means we prepare to rebuild as so many successful waterfront communities throughout the state used this vehicle known as redevelopment. What should have been a simple application after an almost 9 month process, was attempted to be derailed by a small group of people who did not understand the facts or law. Despite clear explanation by our lawyers and parishioners speech, a few Council members tried to table, but because of your reaction and the integrity of some of the Council members they voted to proceed. We were victorious on this first step. Have you bought your 100 th ANNIVERSARY CONCERT AND GALA LUNCHEON TICKETS? SPACE IS LIMITED AND TICKETS ARE GOING QUICKLY. Dear St. Demetrios Community, Message from Father George This month we are celebrating our 100 th year as the parish of St. Demetrios in Perth Amboy, and a variety of special events and sacred services will mark our anniversary year. You all know this. And you all know that 100 years is a long time. A lot has happened in our parish over the last century, and as we look back over our history, we can see the hand of God directing and shaping our growth and development as a Church. Many of us might even remember moments when it appeared that the parish was struggling to survive, but it is only when we reflect on these moments in particular that we recognize with special clarity that the hand of God has guided and protected us over the past century. The seed that was planted in Perth Amboy in 1917 has now grown a hundredfold. This is what is promised to us in the Parable of the Sower. In that parable, the number 100 is very significant. As the Sower spreads his seed on the ground, some of it falls on the side of the road, and is carried away by the birds. Other seed falls on rocky soil, and is scorched by the sun. But then we read, Other seed fell on good ground, and did yield fruit that sprang up and increased; and brought forth, some thirty, and some sixty, and some a hundred (Mark 4:8). To have such a great yield - thirty, sixty and a hundredfold - is miraculous. The term yield refers to the amount of crops that are produced. If one bushel of seeds is planted, and five bushels of crops are produced, this is a yield of five times the amount planted. In the Parable of the Sower, the yields of sixty, thirty and a hundredfold are impossibly high yields of crops. These numbers are used in order to teach us that when God plants a seed, something miraculous can happen. Regular farming could never produce such massive yields, but God s will makes such a yield possible. The rules of normal farming do not apply. And when the seed was planted by our ancestors in Perth Amboy many years ago, it fell on good soil. What was planted in 1917 yielded a crop of a hundredfold. And why did the seed produce such a miraculous crop? Because it fell on good soil and because the people who followed God s will in Perth Amboy had prepared themselves to serve the Lord faithfully and well. We must continue to be open to God s will in Perth Amboy. We must prepare ourselves with hearts open to one another and turn prayerfully to God. Only in this way will the soil of Perth Amboy continue to be soil that produces a miraculous yield of divine produce. Our parish is not the largest in New Jersey, nor will it ever be, but in our 100 th year, we can still expect God to guide us and to lead us forward so that we can be one of the best parishes in the state. Our 100 th year is not a time when we should look old and tired, but one in which we should be thinking of new birth and of new life. Abraham was in his 100 th year when God gave him his son Isaac to rejuvenate and bring new life to the people of Israel. If we are faithful and focused on God, we can be, like Isaac, the new generation of the people of God in Perth Amboy, preparing to share the message of Orthodoxy for 100 more years in our beloved parish of St. Demetrios. PRESIDENT S MESSAGE My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, This month, we not only commemorate the holy and glorious great Martyr Demetrios, but we celebrate our church's 100th Anniversary in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. We have planned a loving, family-oriented week of prayer, music and wonderful food services. Get your tickets online, from our church office and join us for this glorious celebration. Hronia Polla. In a message about Saint Demetrios several years ago, Archbishop Demetrios, Geron of America, reminds us that "Saint Demetrios lived in truly difficult times of widespread persecution against Christians." He reminds us about "the exemplary courage of Saint Demetrios against the ruthless Roman Emperor Maximian, who imprisoned and executed him after learning that he was a Christian and that reflect(ing) upon the complex subject of martyrdom and its relevance for our contemporary world." His Eminence instructs us that The Holy Scriptures view martyrdom of the Orthodox Christians as an "ultimate expression of love for God and an unyielding commitment to Christ. Though we may not face outward threats of physical harm for our faith today, our Christian faith sometimes impels us to take ethical stances that are unpopular, or to make business decisions that insure that others be treated with dignity and respect. Such stances and decisions may, in turn, subject us to social ridicule or contempt, or even threaten our financial security with job loss. Like the martyrs, we too, are called to remain grounded in our faith, to confess always and in all places the truth of Jesus Christ and to place our ultimate trust in God regarding matters. We too, are called to define God as the central focus of our love and our lives. In so doing, we truly honor and emulate the great heroes of faith, our precious martyrs." So when asked, how did we survive 100 years as an inner city church? The answer is, the same way we will thrive over the next 100 years. Namely, every day we must each live as the modern day martyrs, ready, if we must, express ethical standards that maybe be unpopular, subject us to ridicule or contempt, in an unafraid manner with unyielding commitment to Christ in our faith by placing ultimate trust in and making GOD the central focus of our love and lives. Saint Demetrios was with us then, is with us now and always. By his example, we will prevail! NEWSLETTER EDITORIAL BOARD Fr. George Parsenios Marina Corodemus Dino Kusulas Mary Lou Rivera Hon.

SUNDAY SCHOOL Our Sunday School Curriculum Program introduces our children to our Greek Orthodox faith, beliefs, traditions and customs with lessons that include learning prayers, participation and correct practices in the Divine Liturgy, the Life of Jesus, The Holy Trinity, Bible Stories, Holy Sacraments, our Saints, our Feasts and special Holy Days, to name a few topics. Our curriculum books and materials utilized are those published by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, Department of Religious Education. The vitally important connection to our religion and faith assists the children and their families in developing their spiritual growth together. Teachers are sensitive to their roles in this process which must be a partnership with the home and family. It is our belief that Sunday School provides the children with the pillars of our faith, the Christ centered inner peace and well-being which will become the guidance and reference that they may come to rely upon as they face the trials and tribulations of their growth and development in the challenging society of today. GREEK SCHOOL The Saint Demetrios Greek School is back in session for the 2017-2018 school year. For all those who have children, and would like for them to learn their heritage and the Greek language, I encourage all of you to enroll your children as soon as possible. Learning Greek is a tremendous help in your child s development, specifically when trying to understand more difficult English words with Greek roots. Also, the Greek school will allow your children to meet other Greek kids in the community. It is a gateway for them to build friendships and will encourage them to join Greek organizations such as GOYA and also Sunday School. The children are the future of the Greek community and we need to ensure they feel connected to it so when they become older they will continue passing on Greek traditions and language to their children. As Greek School President, it is my job to ensure the students have the resources they need to learn Greek. I would love to see a large class of young Greek children learning about their language and heritage together. Thank you, Dean Kakadelis Greek School President Congratulations to Dimitri Kakadelis who passed The Comprehensive Examination in Modern Greek in June 2017! Page10
PTO Church Picnic September 10, 2017 Our Saint Demetrios PTO held a wonderful Welcome Back Picnic for all our Church Parishioners on Sunday, September 10, 2017. It was an exceptionally beautiful day, the sun was shining and everyone was smiling. The aroma of hot dogs and hamburgers filled the air, which everyone enjoyed along with all the trimmings, salads, a variety of fruits and, of course, sweet, delicious desserts. It was a special gathering of our parishioners of all ages who were especially happy to see each other, pray together and enjoy fellowship as a united and supportive congregation. Asbury Park September 17, 2017 Our parishioners participated in the Holy Cross Celebration on Sunday afternoon. The Divine Liturgy of the Feast of the Cross was held at the Paramount Theatre in Asbury Park, NJ. After Church Services, families and guests gathered on the beach to witness the "Tossing of the Cross Ceremony". Our boys and girls dove into the ocean for the opportunity to retrieve the cross. Each winner returned the cross to His Eminence Evangelos who blessed them along with all those who participated. We are very proud of our divers, Julia Parsenios, Kali Simatos and Dean Giannakopoulos who were congratulated for their efforts by Father George. Page11
