Με την παρουσία του Αρχιεπισκόπου μας τελέσαμε τον Αγιασμό του ημερησίου σχολείου μας. Την άλλη ημέρα όλοι οι Ιερείς τελέσαμε τον Αγιασμό του απογευματινού σχολείου μας. Ξεκινήσαμε με μεγάλη συμμετοχή των παιδιών στα σχολεία μας και αυτό αποκαλύπτει την εξαιρετική δουλειά που κάνουν οι εκπαιδευτικοί μας στα σχολείο μας. Χθες 14 Σεπτεμβρίου εορτάσαμε την πανεπίσημη εορτή της Υψώσεως του Τιμίου και Ζωοποιού Σταυρού. Ο Τίμιος Σταυρός είναι το κεντρικό σύμβολο της πίστεως μας το οποίο αποκαλύπτει την άκρα ταπείνωση του Κυρίου ημών Ιησού Χριστού και συνάμα την δόξα και την δύναμη Του. Είναι ταπείνωση διότι ο Υιός και Λόγος του Θεού σεσαρκωμένος δέχθηκε να θυσιαστεί για τις δικές μας αμαρτίες. Ταπεινώθηκε ο Ιησούς Χριστός για να προσφέρει και να ανοίξει εις εμάς τους ανθρώπους τον δρόμο της σωτηρίας. Έτσι λοιπόν, τον Σταυρός, όπου χρησιμοποιείτο από τους Ρωμαίους ως ένα μέσο φονικό, ο Κύριος μας τον αναδεικνύει ως σύμβολο νίκης. Παίρνει ένα τόσο εξευτελιστικό σύμβολο σαν τον σταυρό και το αναδεικνύει ως σύμβολο σωτηρίας. Εμείς οι Χριστιανοί έχουμε τον Τίμιο Σταυρό ως σύμβολο νίκης διότι όταν το χρησιμοποιούμε μας ενισχύει εις την ζωή μας. Κάνοντας το σταυρό μας παραδεχόμαστε την δύναμη που προσφέρει ο Σταυρός και γίνεται και για μας σύμβολο νίκης έναντι του διαβόλου και της αμαρτίας. Τόση δύναμη έχει ο Σταυρός όπου ο διάβολος εκμηδενίζεται μπροστά στην δόξα Του. Όταν τον προβάλλουμε και εμείς τον Σταυρό εις την ζωή μας δεχόμαστε την δύναμη του. Κάνοντας τον σταυρό μας είναι ένας τρόπος προσευχής. Για αυτό δεν πρέπει να ντρεπόμαστε ή να διστάζουμε να κάνουμε τον σταυρό μας σε κάθε ευκαιρία, διότι με τον σταυρό αποκαλύπτουμε την ιδιότητα μας ως Ορθόδοξοι Χριστιανοί, και δίνουμε μαρτυρία πίστεως. Όταν ντρεπόμαστε να κάνουμε τον σταυρό μας τότε μας νικά ο διάβολος. Ας έχουμε ως κέντρο της ζωής μας το Τίμιο και Ζωοποιό Σταυρό για να μας δυναμώνει κάθε μέρα και στιγμή της ζωής μας. ΑΜΗΝ Αρχιμ. GEORGE GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH SUNDAY SCHOOL PROGRAM 2013-2014 Dear Parents, We would like to inform you that both Saint Demetrios Cathedral and Saints Catherine &George Church offer a Sunday school program to enhance your child s religious education. The program is for pre-kindergardeners to 9th grade. The curriculum for the students starting in pre-k is an introduction to the church and our faith through arts and craft projects, the middle grades will learn about the all our religious holidays as well as the Sacraments of Baptism, Chrismation, Holy Communion and Confession. The higher grades will have an open discussion on various topics related to our faith. Please note that the first day of Sunday School Classes in both churches is on Sunday, September 22 nd. We encourage parents to register their children before the first day of Sunday School, but there is open registration throughout the year as well. If so name: GOYA Athlete Email : PARENT/GUARDIAN: Please read the following REGISTRATION TERMS/GUIDELINES as well as the EMERGENCY PROCEDURE associated with this registration: REGISTRATION TERMS/GUIDELINES: Registration SOLELY allows you to become a member of the respective youth program your son/daughter is age eligible for and as such allows you access to the gym on the designated dates of each youth program. Membership in the youth program entitles a youth member to try out for any of our athletic travel teams, so long as they meet the eligibility and age requirements for such team(s). Nobody will be allowed to participate in any tryouts for any of our athletic travel teams unless they are a registered member of a youth program. A registered member of a youth program entails BOTH submission of this registration form and all required information herein, AND payment of the participation registration fee of $50.00 (Fifty Dollars). One without the other is not sufficient.

All youth members who tryout and qualify for one of our athletic teams will be required to pay an additional travel team fee of $100.00 (One Hundred Dollars) which includes the team uniform. If the youth member has the same team uniform that will be worn by that team for that year from previous year(s), that youth member will only have to pay an additional travel team fee of $50.00 (Fifty Dollars). All travel team fees are payable once the final team roster is announced but in no event later than the time set by the respective Leagues for the submission of Team Rosters. If the travel team fee is not paid by that time, that youth member s name will not be included on the initial Team Roster submitted to the League. Travel team fees will be collected separately for each sport a youth member is on. For example, if a JOY member is on both a travel basketball team and a travel soccer team, they must pay two travel team fees one for basketball and one for soccer. However, despite the fact that soccer s one season is split up into Fall and Spring sessions, a youth member paying a travel team fee for the soccer team will only pay one travel team fee for the whole soccer season. Both the participation registration fee and the travel team fee are NOT refundable under any circumstances. Due to League Rules we may be limited to a certain number of youth members on a Team Roster (usually 15). The amount of teams the community of St. Demetrios Cathedral of Astoria enters into any division of any athletic league will be based upon the discretion of the Youth Committee of our Parish Council. ALL JOY youth members who are members of the traveling Basketball teams MUST nonetheless participate in Biddy League on Saturdays on a weekly basis, as being on a traveling team DOES NOT excuse a youth member from attending Biddy League. This rule will be strictly enforced. Photographs that are taken during Biddy League, JOY/GOYA Basketball/Soccer games, and JOY/GOYA trips, retreats, and awards dinners, may be posted on/in the Youth Program Facebook site, the community website, and the Community Bulletin. EMERGENCY PROCEDURE: In order to ensure the safety of your child, please sign the statement below giving authority to the St. Demetrios Astoria staff to arrange for treatment in the case of an emergency if you cannot be immediately reached. September 2013 Beloved parishioners, The Church belongs to each of us and serves as our second home. It is where we are baptized, where we are married, where we raise our children, where we pray for one another and where we remember and honor those who pass away. The Church is also where we come together to learn the teachings of Jesus Christ and enjoy Orthodox Christian fellowship. We need to support our Church community. In order to sustain our place of worship, we are obligated to fulfill certain needs--both functional and financial. As our Church community grows, the needs of the Church increase as well. As stewards of our community, there are various ways that we can give to our beloved Church. The Church requires the time, talents and treasures (financial support) of our members in order to function successfully. These items are not mutually exclusive. For example, what you may love doing may be your talent and can be a gift bestowed upon you. If you love to cook, organize, paint, or sing, all of these talents can be provided as a gift to help the ministries of our Church. It would be wonderful if we could rely on our time and talents to operate the Parish of St. Demetrios; we also need the treasure of each of each of our parishioners in order to form a church. In the New Testament, Saint Paul writes: He who sows sparingly shall reap sparingly and he who sows bountifully shall reap bountifully. The operation of a Church involves building and maintenance expenses, and costs to cover salaries of personnel, expenses for office supplies and postage, and utility charges, to name a few. Here is where your stewardship commitment comes in handy. We should not depend on special affairs, such as our festival, in order to meet our budget. The Church s mission depends directly on your generosity. Whether you donate your time, talent or financial means, your generosity will aid and support in the development of our Church. With your faith and support, we will endeavor to become a true steward parish.
