PICTURES ASSUMPTION NAMEDAY CELEBRATION MOUNT OLYMPUS YOUTH TRIP VISIT FROM HIS GRACE BISHOP ALEXIOS
PASTORAL MESSAGE Dear Parishioners, The Lord mighty and powerful, the Lord powerful in war. Lift up your gates you rulers; and be lifted up you eternal gates, and the king of glory will enter. This is what His Eminence Metropolitan Iakovos will declare as the doors of the Church are opened on the day of Consecration, October 4, as the Church is removed from the world and is set aside forever. This declaration is one that we must take upon ourselves, not just as being applicable to the Temple of the Assumption, but also to the Temple of each of our bodies. It is the removal of the Parish from the world that must be the model of our own spiritual journey. We are in the world, but not of the world. In other words, although we are currently living in a fallen world in which sin is plentiful: We must recognize our falleness, but we must not taste temptation. We must be governed by His law, not the relative morality of our time. We must deny ourselves through the setting aside of pride and not relish in self-centeredness, gluttony, envy or greed. We must honor our Father in Heaven by making our lives a living prayer. Let us always pray together, Let us set aside all worldly cares that we may receive the King of all! In His Service, Rev. Father Jon Boukis Proistamenos

PARAKLESIS The Small Paraklesis to the Theotokos is a service in which we offer our prayers to the Blessed Mother of God in which we ask her to pray on our behalf to the Lord. Our supplications are for health, guidance and deliverance from adversity. It is through her prayers that we are saved, for she is closer to the Lord than you or I, and we know through many miracles that her prayers are heard. Please take a moment and prepare a list of those for whom you would like to have prayers offered - bring the list to the Paraklesis and offer your prayers with the whole community. For those who cannot come, know that the Church is open and that prayers are being offered for all of us. Again we pray for mercy, life, health, peace, safety, salvation, visitation, forgiveness and remission of sins of the servants of God
CONSECRATION The Consecration of our Parish of the Assumption is an event that is not merely celebrated during one service, but spans the Liturgical Cycle of an entire day beginning with Great Vespers on Saturday Evening and continuing through Orthros, the Consecration Service and the first Hierarchical Liturgy. Although the cycle is very rich, it is the Service of the Consecration that for most of us that is truly a once in a lifetime event. Unlike most of the Liturgical Services that are celebrated at the Assumption, the Consecration cannot be celebrated by the Priest the Bishop is the only one who can consecrate a Church (the other services that can only be celebrated by the Bishop are Ordinations and the preparation of Holy Chrism). This is necessary by definition of the ministry of the Bishop, which is to bring unity to Christ s Church. It is through the Episcopacy that the Church is the same no matter where we go, whether it is here in the Quad Cities, Chicago, New York or Athens. The ministry of the Priesthood is to tend to the Parish on behalf of the Bishop and to celebrate the mysteries of the faith. The Consecration Service has 5 main components: 1. The three processions of the Clergy and People around the Temple. 2. The placing and sealing of the Holy Relics into the Altar Table. 3. The Baptizing and Anointing of the Holy Altar Table. 4. The Vesting of the Holy Altar. 5. The Lighting of the Vigil Light on the Holy Altar. It is through the Consecration that the Church building is set aside as a place that is sacred and different from everyplace else in the world. Just as we are entirely changed into a new creation during the mystery of Holy Baptism and sealed with the mark of the Holy Spirit with Holy Chrismation, so is the Temple building completely changed during the this Blessed Event. In the July, August and September issues of the Agape News, I will further explain each of the five parts of the Consecration Service. This event is truly awe inspiring and each time I think about it I become moved and even feel chills. Don t miss out on truly understanding and being a part of this once in a lifetime event!
CONSECRATION The procession around the Temple Explained in the July Agape News The Sealing of the Holy Relics into the Altar Table Explained in the August Agape News THE BAPTIZING AND ANOINTING OF THE HOLY ALTAR TABLE The Altar Table represents the burial table of Christ within the tomb. To set the Holy Table aside, it now will undergo its own Baptism (washing) and Chrismation (anointing). The Bishop now puts on a special garment called the Savanon which is a white robe similar to the Sticharion which is worn under the bishops and priests vestments. The Savanon eventually will be cut up and given to all those in attendance as a witness to the blessed event. The washing of the Altar Table then takes place with the Bishop pouring Holy Water on it three times in the Name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The priests then dry the Altar with pure white towels. The Bishop then proceeds to anoint the Altar Table with Holy Chrism. The Altar Table is once again wiped down by the priests, but this time it is wiped with the new Antimensia that will be distributed to the Parishes that are in need of new ones. The Antimensia are the Burial Icon Clothes that are opened up on the Holy Altar Table during the Divine Liturgy on which the Body and Blood of Christ are consecrated. THE VESTING OF THE ALTAR & LIGHTING OF THE VIGIL LIGHT Now that the Altar Table has had the Relics of the Saints sealed within and it has been washed and anointed, it is time to vest the Altar Table. The first step is to permanently fasten the icons of the four evangelists to the four corners of the Holy Table. Next the Katasarkion, a permanent cover, is placed over the Holy Table and cinched underneath, never to be removed. The Bishop then proceeds to put on a new Altar Cover and all the articles (Antimension, Gospel, Tabernacle, Blessing Cross and Candles). Now that the Altar Table is complete, the remaining icons in the Church and all four walls are anointed with Holy Chrism. Finally, the vigil light in which each person placed a drop of oil is lit and placed on the Holy Altar Table.
EXALTATION OF THE HOLY The Elevation of the Venerable and Life- Creating Cross of the Lord: The pagan Roman emperors tried to completely eradicate from human memory the holy places where our Lord Jesus Christ suffered and was resurrected for mankind. The Emperor Hadrian (117-138) gave orders to cover over the ground of Golgotha and the Sepulchre of the Lord, and to build a temple of the pagan goddess Venus and a statue of Jupiter. Pagans gathered at this place and offered sacrifice to idols there. Eventually after 300 years, by Divine Providence, the great Christian sacred remains, the Sepulchre of the Lord and the Life-Creating Cross were again discovered and opened for veneration. This took place under the Emperor Constantine the Great (306-337). In 313 he had issued the Edict of Milan, by which the Christian religion was legalized and the persecutions against Christians in the Western half of the empire were stopped. The ruler Licinius, although he had signed the Edict of Milan to oblige Constantine, still fanatically continued the persecutions against Christians. Only after his conclusive defeat did the 313 Edict of toleration extend also to the Eastern part of the empire. The Holy Equal of the Apostles Emperor Constantine, having gained victory over his enemies in three wars with God's assistance, had seen in the heavens the Sign of the Cross, and written beneath: "By this you shall conquer." Ardently desiring to find the Cross on which our Lord Jesus Christ was crucified, St Constantine sent his mother, the pious Empress Helen (May 21), to Jerusalem, providing her with a letter to St Macarius, Patriarch of Jerusalem. Although the holy empress Helen was already in her declining years, she set about completing the task with enthusiasm. The empress gave orders to destroy the pagan temple and the statues in Jerusalem. Searching for the Life- Creating Cross, she made inquiry of Christians and Jews, but for a long time her search remained unsuccessful. Finally, they directed her to a certain elderly Hebrew by the name of Jude who stated that the Cross was buried where the temple of Venus stood. They demolished the pagan temple and, after praying, they began to excavate the ground. Soon the Tomb of the Lord was uncovered. Not far from it were three crosses, a board with the inscription ordered by Pilate, and four nails which had pierced the Lord's Body (March 6).
.CELEBRATED SEPTEMBER 14 TH To discern on which of the three crosses Christ was crucified, Patriarch Macarius alternately touched the crosses to a corpse. When the Cross of the Lord touched the dead one, he came to life. Having beheld the raising of the dead man, everyone was convinced that the Life-Creating Cross was found. During the discovery of the Life-Creating Cross another miracle took place: a grievously sick woman, beneath the shadow of the Holy Cross, was healed instantly. The elder Jude and other Jews there believed in Christ and accepted Holy Baptism. Jude received the name Cyriacus and afterwards was consecrated Bishop of Jerusalem. The holy empress Helen journeyed to the holy places connected with the earthly life of the Savior, building more than 80 churches, at Bethlehem the birthplace of Christ, and on the Mount of Olives where the Lord ascended to Heaven, and at Gethsemane where the Savior prayed before His sufferings and where the Mother of God was buried after her death. St Helen took part of the Life-Creating Wood and nails with her to Constantinople. The holy emperor Constantine gave orders to build at Jerusalem a majestic and spacious church in honor of the Resurrection of Christ, also including under its roof the Life-Giving Tomb of the Lord and Golgotha. The temple was constructed in about ten years. St Helen did not survive until the dedication of the temple, she died in the year 327. The church was consecrated on September 13, 335. On the following day, September 14, the festal celebration of the Exaltation of the Venerable and Life-Creating Cross was established. During the reign of the Byzantine emperor Phocas (602-610) the Persians defeated the Greek army, plundered Jerusalem and captured both the Life- Creating Cross of the Lord and the Holy Patriarch Zachariah (609-633). The Cross remained in Persia for fourteen years and only under the emperor Heraclius (610-641), who with the help of God defeated Khozroes and concluded peace with his successor and son Syroes, was the Cross of the Lord returned to the Christians. With great solemnity the Life-creating Cross was transferred to Jerusalem. Emperor Heraclius in imperial crown and royal purple carried the Cross of Christ into the temple of the Resurrection. With the emperor went Patriarch Zacharios. At the gates by which they ascended Golgotha, the emperor suddenly stopped and was not able to proceed farther. The holy Patriarch explained to the emperor that an angel of the Lord was blocking his way. The emperor was told to remove his royal trappings and to walk barefoot, since He Who bore the Cross for the salvation of the world from sin had made His way to Golgotha in all humility. Then Heraclius donned plain garb, and without further hindrance, carried the Cross of Christ into the church.
