Thoughts from our Parish Priest He that believeth on me, as the Scripture hath said, out of His belly shall flow rivers of living water. What do we think when we talk about the belly? The belly can be about corruption, selfishness, death, indulgence; the belly is about the earth. The belly commands that we eat every day. Sometimes the belly commands that we eat too much. It makes us tired, unwilling to pray, unwilling to work. The belly is one of the least honored members of the body. Certainly, couldn t there be a better place for the waters to flow? What about from the head, from the eyes, from the hands? The Lord said from his belly shall flow forth rivers of living water. Why is this? When Christ sent His Holy Spirit upon mankind it was so that the things of Christ would be revealed to those who would be willing to listen, and they would become completely alive. Everything would be cleaned; just as water that is rushing cleans and freshens everything, so that even those parts of us, which are dirty, which resist becoming perfected, the Lord will indeed perfect. The Holy Spirit is also fire. These are two things that in nature - water and fire - do not exist together - one destroys the other. But according to God, these things can coexist. Fire burns away that which is trash, that which is unclean. Fire purifies. Fire softens. Fire warms. And we need the fire of the Holy Spirit to burn away impurity in our soul, and we need the warmth of the Holy Spirit to encourage us. The Holy Spirit is called Comforter - He comforts with fire; He comforts by warming our hearts, by giving us that sure and certain hope that indeed we can be changed. And the Holy Spirit is water, eternally giving us life, refreshment, invigorating us. He is a spring that never ends. A drought will never come upon him who has the Spirit; fire and water in the soul of a Christian, each doing their part, each from the same Spirit. Out of our belly shall flow forth rivers of living water, because our Lord showed us how to live. He made us capable of living, and gave us a Guide to show us, continually, how to live and to strengthen us. May the fire and the water of the Holy Spirit continue to enlighten and help all of us, and make us incorrupt forever. Amen. 7

Message from the Community President My fellow members of our Community, Christ is Risen! Celebrating our blessed Pascha, I pray the love of Christ may rule in our hearts. I thank all of you for your participation and attendance during Lent and Holy Week, and I hope that together, healthy and united, we will all celebrate again next year. The cancelation of the dance of March 25th was personally a bitter experience. Nevertheless, even in this discouraging outcome, I had the opportunity to hear some very valuable opinions and thoughts from you, and these thoughts and opinions give us the ability and willingness to re-group and become more dynamic and approachable to our people. I thank the people who took some time to share with me their thoughts, and I promise that we will do our best. On May 3 we have our General Assembly and I hope to see you all there, so that you can share you positive and constructive ideas, and even better, help out our community by volunteering in any programs that draw you. On May 10, after the Divine Liturgy, we invite you all to celebrate together Mother s Day in the Main Hall of our church. With this opportunity, I would like to discuss something that I believe has been on the mind of some people. There is a perception that our Metropolis in receiving its dues from our community, receives all our leftover income from the whole year. I would like to clarify and reassure you that we send to our Metropolis only the percentage each community sends, according to the decision of the 24th Clergy-Laity Conference, which took place in Hamilton, Ontario in June of 2007. The rest of the income stays in our community and is used in the best possible way for the needs of our community and church. With this opportunity, I would like to also share with you some more thoughts on the above topic. It is with no doubt that under the leadership of His Eminence Archbishop Sotirios the Greek Orthodox Church in Canada established itself as Metropolis separate from the United States and established its own Theological Academy to provide priests specifically for Canada. Through these accomplishments, we have our own school of theology for the needs of our people, and our Metropolitan receives the respect of the Canadian authorities and leaders, and I believe that he represents us very well. In the near future, we will have some presentations from Dr. Matthew Maher (professor of Classical Archaeology of the University of Winnipeg), on the digs and findings of Sykeon in Peloponnesus. I thank you all once again for your support. 8

Message from the Community President Aγαπητοί Συμπάρικοι, Χριστός Ανέστη και Χρόνια πολλά. Πέρασε και το Ευλογημένο Πάσχα και μακάρι η αγάπη του Χριστού μας να βασιλεύει στις καρδιές μας. Ευχαριστώ όλο τον κόσμο για τη συμμετοχή του κατα την πασχαλινή περίοδο και εύχομαι του χρόνου να είμαστε καλά και να ξαναγιορτάσουμε όλοι μαζί. Η ακύρωση της χοροεσπερίδας της 25 η Μαρτίου, ήταν για μένα μια πικρή προσωπική εμπειρία. Ωστόσο, ακόμα και μέσα από αυτό το άσχημο αποτέλεσμα, είχα την ευκαρία να ακούσω και κάποιες πολύτιμες σκέψεις από εσάς, που μας δίνουν τη δυνατότητα να ανασυγκροτηθούμε και να γίνουμε πιο δημιουργικοί και προσητοί στον κόσμο. Ευχαριστώ τα άτομα, που αφιέρωσαν λίγο χρόνο να μοιραστούν μαζί μου τις σκέψεις τους και σας υπόσχομαι, ότι θα κάνουμε το καλύτερο δυνατό. Στις 3 Μαϊου θα έχουμε τη Γενική Συνέλευση και ελπίζω να σας δω όλους εκεί, για να μοιραστείτε μαζί μας τις δημιουργικές σας ιδέες και ακόμα καλύτερανα γίνετε εθελοντές σε δραστηριότητες, που σας αρέσουν. Στις 10 Μαϊου μετά την Εκκλησία σας περιμένουμε, για να γιορτάσουμε όλοι μαζί την Γιορτή της Μητέρας. Με την ευκαρία αυτή, θα ήθελα να αναφέρω κάτι, που πιστεύω, ότι υπάρχει στη σκέψη ορισμένων μελών. Κυκλοφορεί η άποψη, ότι η Μητροπόλη εισπράττει τα έσοδα τόσο Κοινότητας, όσο και της Εκκλησίας. Θα ήθελα να ξεκαθαρίσω και να σας διαβεβαιώσω, ότι στην Μητρόπολη αποδίδεται μέρος των εσόδων κάθε Κοινότητας σύμφωνα με την απόφαση της 24ης Κληρικολαικής Συνέλευσης, που έγινε στο Hamilton του Ontario τον Ιούνιο του 2007. Τα υπόλοιπα έσοδα μένουν και χρησιμοποιούνται με τον καλύτερο δυνατό τρόπο για τις ανάγκες της δικής μας Εκκλησίας και Κοινότητας. Θα ήθελα όμως με την ευκαρία αυτή να μοιραστώ μαζί μας και κάποιες άλλες σκέψεις μου πάνω σε αυτό το θέμα. Είναι αδιαμφισβήτητο, ότι κάτω από την ηγεσία του Σεβασμιότατου Κ. Σωτήριου, η Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία του Καναδά έγινε ανεξάρτητη από την Αμερική. Επίσης, ενα μεγάλο κατόρθωμα του είναι η ίδρυση της Θεολογικής Σχολής στο Toronto, διότι σε λίγο καιρό οι εκκλησίες μας θα έμεναν χωρίς ιερείς. Με αυτό τον τρόπο έχουμε το δικό μας φυτώριο και έχουμε την τύχη ο Μητροπολίτης μας να τυγχάνει μεγάλου σεβασμού από τις Καναδικές αρχές και θεωρώ, ότι μας αντιπροσωπεύει επάξια. Στο προσεχές μέλλον θα έχουμε και κάποιες παρουσιάσεις από τον Dr. Matthew Maher (καθηγητή του Τμήματος Κλασσικής Αρχαιολογίας του Πανεπιστημίου του Winnpeg) για τα ευρήματα των Συκεών. Church Iconography Program Beloved in Christ, In this bulletin you will find the program of our iconography, as well as a sample of what the icons will look like. On the page with the icons, the top layer is the New Testament icons, which will be put up on the right side of the church (as you face the Altar). The bottom layer is the Old Testmanent icons, which will be put up on the left side of the church. The theme is Promise and Fulfillment, and it depicts the promises given by God in the Old Testament, and the parallel, or fulfillment of that promise in the New Testament. The icons that have not been crossed out are the ones still available. These icons will be installed on the top halves of the side walls of our church. We are also installing icons of individuals saints along the lower halves of the side walls of the church. There is no program for these icons, meaning that each donor can choose the saint to be depicted (as long as it hasn t been donated or reserved painted already). I can give you some suggestions if you d like. Finally, we are changing the small icons on the iconostasis (temblon) of our Altar, as the current ones have been aged and darkened. This is the list of the icons needing replacement on the Iconostasis: - The Annunciation of the Theotokos - The Presentation of the child Jesus to the Temple - The Raising of Lazarus from the dead - Doubting Thomas - The Ascension of Christ - The Holy Pentecost The price for a scriptural scene (upper half of the walls) panel is $9,500.00. The price for an individual saint (lower half of the walls) is $2,500.00. The price for the icons on the Iconostasis is $2,500.00 You can also make a general donation toward the iconography of the church. We have also had people get together and donate an icon as a group. Greetings from the Ladies of Philoptochos Christ Is Risen, Truly He Is Risen! April was a wonderful month, after enjoying the beautiful Pascha services, we were blessed to spend time cracking eggs with our Parish family after the Agape service. A big thank you to all who helped make our fish dinner a huge success. A special thank you to Peter Avgeropoulos who so wonderfully worked the grill, and to Peter Danakas for the delicious bread. And thank you to the families of St. Demetrios for your continued support. This Month, Philoptochos celebrates 58 years of service to our parish, and greater community. It was May 30, 1957 when Fr. Timothy Haloftis set up a meeting with the Ladies to introduce them to a wonderful philanthropic organization that started in Greece in 1922, and in the USA in 1931. Fr. Timothy explained the purpose and ideals of the group: to aid the poor, the destitute, the hungry, the sick, the unemployed, the orphaned, the imprisoned, the windowed, the handicapped, and the victims of disasters. Ever since Philoptochos has been blessed to continue serving the Lord under the guidance of our parish priest. Wishing the Ladies many years of service. Axies! Με την χαρη του Θεου περασαμε τις αγιες μερες του Παθους και εορτασαμε την υπερλαμπρη Ανασταση του Σωτηρα μας Ιησου Χριστου θριαμβευτου του αδη και του θανατου. Γεματες οι καρδιες απο το φως και την αγαπη Του, μια οικογενεια σε πανηγυρικη ατμοσφαιρα τσουγκρισαμε το Πασχαλιατικο αυγο μετα τον Εσπερινο της Αγαπης στο χωλ της εκκλησια μας. Ολα να γινονται για την δοξα του μεγαλου Θεου μας. Αυτος ειναι και ο μοναδικος στοχος μας και η αποστολη της Φιλοπτωχου. Απο καρδιας ευχαριστουμε ολους οσους προσφερατε για την φοβερη επιτυχια του ετησιου γευματος των Βαιων.Καθε πρσφορα ειναι πολυτιμη (μας ζητησατε ανωνυμια και το σεβομαστε) ο Θεος γνωριζει την προσφορα μας και τον καθε ενα απο μας. Ενα.μεγαλο ευχαριστω στον Πητερ Αυγεροπουλο τοσο για το καλοψημενο ψαρι οσο και για την καλη του διαθεση επισης και στον Πητερ Ντανακα για το νοστιμο ψωμι που τοσο προθυμα προσφερε για την απολαυση μας. Ευχαριστουμε και σας την οικογενεια του Αγιου Δημητριου για την συνεχη υποστηριξη σας στις εκδηλωσεις μας. Με συγκινηση και ευγνωμοσυνη ενα μικρο αφιερωμα στην αδελφοτητα μας που κλεινει 58 χρονια στις 30 Μαιου. Ο τοτε ιερεας μας π. Τιμοθεος Χαλοφτης καλεσε τις κυριες και τους μιλησε για αυτη την καταπληκτη οργανωση που ξεκινησε το 1922 στην Ελλαδα και στις Ηνωμενες πολιτειες το 1931 προς ανακουφιση πονεμων και απορων αδελφων μας. Τοσα χρονια λοιπον ακουραστες στην υπηρεσια του πλησιον προχωρουμε με χαρα και ειναι μεγαλο το αξιωμα να Τον υπηρετουμε πιστα απο αυτη την θεση ως μελη μια μεγαλης οργανωσης ανα τον κοσμο παντοτε υπο την επιβλεψην του ιερεως μας. Ας ειναι ευλογημενες οσες εχουν εργαστει για τη αγαπη του Χριστου μας μεσω της Φιλοπτωχου και ευχομαστε καθε ευλογια απο τον Πατερα μας τον ουρανιο για την συνεχιση του τοσο Θεαρεστου εργου που επιτελει. Greek School On behalf of everyone at Greek School, we wish you Χριστός Ανέστη! Rejoice! Christ has risen! Last day of classes are on Saturday, May 23rd. Graduation and closing ceremony will take place on Saturday, May 30th. As the school year comes to an end, we reflect fondly on the many memories made at Greek School. We sincerely hope everyone has enjoyed the year! We would like to thank the teaching staff and assistants for their dedication to our Greek School. The knowledge that they share with our children forms the foundation for which our language and culture which will be passed on from generation to generation.
