2017 STEWARDSHIP DISCOVER THE LIGHT by offering your time, talent and treasure to Christ and His Church! The MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF THE HOLY TAXIARHAI AND SAINT HARALAMBOS GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH 7373 CALDWELL AVENUE, NILES, ILLINOIS 60714 PHONE (847) 647-8880 WWW.SAINTHARALAMBOSGOC.ORG Where there is no vision, the people perish. (Proverbs 29:18) The Christian Faith is all about thanksgiving. Our secular North American society thinks that thanksgiving is moderately important, and so it has a wonderful Thanksgiving Day feast once a year. I love this feast. Every October in Canada my calendar tells me it is held in November in the US when the leaves start to turn colour and the days become a little cooler, we gather if possible with our extended families and sit down to a turkey dinner. There are no pilgrims and no Plymouth Rock in sight, but the rejoicing in family warmth and domestic coziness is the same, I suspect, both north and south of the border. I do love Thanksgiving, even if in many secular households not everyone gives thanks to God for the day s bounty. At least once a year our all-too-often self-entitled culture tells us that it is good to give thanks and to be grateful. It is otherwise in the Church. In the Church, we are to give thanks not just once a year, but always, so that every day is a thanksgiving day. We are taught this at Vespers: I will sing praises to my God while I have my being! (from Psalm 104). We are taught this at Matins: Let every breath praise the Lord! (from the Praises). We are taught this at Divine : It is meet and right to hymn You, to bless You, to praise You, to give thanks to You, and to worship You in every place of Your dominion (from the Anaphora). Praise and thanksgiving is what we do as Christians, not just once a year, but all day, every day. Obviously we don t do this as successfully as we should. That is why we need the constant liturgical reminders. But it defines our Christian Faith nonetheless. That is why the main liturgical service, the one that reconstitutes us each week as the Body of Christ and forms the liturgical context for everything else, is called the Eucharist from the Greek eucharistia, thanksgiving. ALL ABOUT THANKSGIVING Thanksgiving not only defines us as Christians, but also as human beings not surprisingly, if the soul (as the second century Christian apologist Tertullian noted) is naturally Christian. That is, what separates us from the animals is the ability to transcend ourselves and the realm of the senses and appetites through thanksgiving. My cat, lovely thing that she is, was not made in the image of God, and so cannot transcend the realm of the appetites and the senses in which she lives. She might love me (or might not; with cats it s sometimes hard to tell), but even if she does love me, she never expresses it in thanksgiving. When I fill her food dish, she never stops, looks up at me and meows a word of doxology or gratitude. She simply chows down as if I do not exist. That s okay. She s just an animal. But we are not just animals, but strange and glorious amalgams of the animal and the spiritual, a kind of amphibian, living in both the physical world and the angelic realm. As such we can transcend the merely physical in which we usually live, and rise up to God. Man is, as Father Alexander Schmemann once reminded us, homo adorans worshiping man and this capacity to worship is what constitutes the divine image in us. Our annual secular reminder of this in the autumn is wonderful. Yet even more wonderful is our weekly reminder every Sunday. For there we are not simply reminded to give thanks, but through our weekly liturgical eucharistia are able to rise above the world, and commune with God, and find healing for our broken and ailing hearts. Family and turkey are great. The Kingdom of God is even better. - Written by Fr. Lawrence Farley THANKSGIVING DAY PAN-ORTHODOX DIVINE LITURGY Sponsored by THE ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN CLERGY ASSOCIATION OF GREATER CHICAGO AND ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN SYNERGY 9:00 am Thanksgiving Day Thursday, November 26, 2017 Holy Virgin Protection Russian Orthodox Cathedral 1800 Lee Street, Des Plaines, Illinois

( will NOT be celebrated at St. Haralambos on Nov 30.) SACRAMENTS AND BLESSINGS MINISTRY TO PERSONS WHO ARE SICK-We urge Orthodox Christians who would like to receive Holy Sacraments but are unable to attend church (hospitalized or at home) to contact the church office so Holy Sacraments can be administered to them. If your loved one is hospitalized please call us, even if the illness is not serious! In a wholistic approach to healing and well-being, a visit from the priest can be very positive. Most hospitals do not inform us when they receive patients from our parish. We depend on you! BLESSINGS OF INFANTS Forty days after birth, a child and its mother come to church to receive a 40 Day Blessing, imitating Christ who was presented in the Temple 40 days after He was born. Please call the church office to arrange this blessing. BAPTISMS Please call the church office to schedule Baptisms. Plan ahead! there are some days when Baptisms are not performed. Keep in mind that there should be only one Godparent and that a child is supposed to be given one name when he or she is baptized. WEDDINGS Please arrange an appointment with Fr. Dean at least eight months before the proposed wedding date to allow time for all necessary marriage preparation. CONFESSION Confessions are arranged by appointment. Please call the church office to schedule Confession. MEMORIAL SERVICES Memorial Services are offered for the eternal rest of persons who have fallen asleep in the Lord. Customarily, these services are offered at 40 days, at 6 months, at 1 year and at 3 years. When three years have passed, the departed are more properly remembered on the Saturdays of the Souls. END OF LIFE ISSUES 1 - A Proper Funeral Conveys Divine Grace to Our Loved One For an Orthodox Christian, a church funeral is a necessity. As we pray, the funeral service brings divine Grace to those who have fallen asleep, for their forgiveness and eternal rest. Our journey toward perfection (Θέωσις) continues after death! A church funeral is an act of love and it is our duty. What good reason can there be to deny our loved ones from God s saving Grace and the honor they deserve? Let us honor our parents and relatives with prayers and a proper funeral. 2 - About Cremation Orthodox Christians believe that in the General Resurrection, our bodies and souls will be restored to each other. Cremation is the deliberate desecration and destruction of what God has made, and is viewed as the denial of the Resurrection. In cases where there is intention for the body of a deceased person to be cremated, thus choosing to disregard our understanding of the Resurrection, the honor of a church funeral is not given, either in the church, or the funeral home or any other place. Additionally, memorial services with kolyva are not allowed, since the connection of the kernel of wheat as a sign of the Resurrection has been intentionally destroyed. What s Wrong With this sign?

HOLY TAXIARHAI AND SAINT HARALAMBOS GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH 7373 CALDWELL AVENUE, NILES, ILLINOIS 60714 PHONE: 847/647-8880 From Father Dean November 2017 Dear Stewards and Friends of St. Haralambos, There is so much good stuff going on all around us! The Synergy Symposium on October 21st was amazing, and the speaker, Presvytera Jennie Constantinou, was fascinating! In the same spirit, we will be looking forward to the presentations that our Inreach Committee will be offering in the winter, as we all have so much room for growth! November is always an exciting month. There is an unmistakable awareness of the coming Christmas Holiday, and a rhythm in our anticipation: the Gift Drive for DCFS, the holiday of the Holy Taxiarhai (Nov 7-8), our Christmas Bazaar (Nov 17-18), the beginning of the Christmas Fast, Thanksgiving, and planning our Stewardship for the new year! One beautiful expression of Stewardship is to serve on the Parish Council. Nominations for parish council will begin soon; please consider it! During our community General Assembly on October 29th, there was a broad discussion about our Phase 3 expansion. Many valuable suggestions were offered, with much emphasis on schools, community-building, and cost-cutting, and the Committee was urged to conclude the planning stage so that we can move forward. The General Assembly expressed its support for the project and resolve that Phase 3 is needed and we must make it happen! It was heartwarming to see the love and passion of our members, and there will soon be a special General Assembly exclusively to discuss this project. We offer congratulations to neighboring parishes. The Annunciation Cathedral is celebrating its 125th Anniversary this year, and St. Basil is celebrating it 90th Anniversary! It soon will be time to start thinking about our 2018 Stewardship! Information will be sent out this month, and we ask you to look it over seriously. The Stewardship Committee wants to know your interests and needs so you can be served better. When you receive your 2018 Giving Card, please fill out all the information. The Christmas Fast begins on November 15! For Orthodox Christians, fasting is an excellent discipline of anticipation. Just as we don t eat before going to a party, we fast so we can celebrate the holiday more fully. Let s try to keep this Fast in anticipation of our Lord s Birth, and then celebrate the beautiful 12 Days of Christmas in their fullness!
