Sunday, October 29, 2017 Hymns Following the Gospel (Small Entrance) Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Fourth Mode When the women Disciples of the Lord had learned from the Angel the joyful message of the Resurrection and had rejected the ancestral decision, they cried aloud to the Apostles triumphantly: Death has been despoiled, Christ God has risen, granting His great mercy to the world. St. Vasilios 1 st Mode Your message was carried throughout the world. As it received your mighty word, By which you divinely made manifest And clarified the nature of existing things You set in order the customs of men, You who are royal priesthood! Holy Father, intercede with Christ our God To grant us His great mercy. Seasonal Kontakion in the Second Mode O Protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame, mediation unto the creator most constant: O despise not the voices of those who have sinned; but be quick, O good one, to come unto our aid, who in faith cry unto thee: Hasten to intercession and speed thou to make supplication, O thou who dost ever protect, O Theotokos, them that honor thee. EPISTLE READINGS Prokeimenon. Fourth Mode. Psalm 103.24,1. O Lord, how manifold are your works. You have made all things in wisdom. Verse: Bless the Lord, O my soul. The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 2:16-20. Brethren, knowing that a man is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ, and not by works of the law, because by works of the law shall no one be justified. But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we ourselves were found to be sinners, is Christ then an agent of sin? Certainly not! But if I build up again those things which I tore down, then I prove myself a transgressor. For I through the law died to the law, that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. GOSPEL READING 7th Sunday of Luke The Reading is from Luke 8:41-56 At that time, there came to Jesus a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue; and falling at Jesus' feet he besought him to come to his house, for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying. As he went, the people pressed round him. And a woman who had had a flow of blood for twelve years and had spent all her living upon physicians and could not be healed by anyone, came up behind him, and touched the fringe of his garment; and immediately her flow of blood ceased. And Jesus said, "Who was it that touched me?" When all denied it, Peter and those who were with him said, "Master, the multitudes surround you and press upon you!" But Jesus said, "Some one touched me; for I perceive that power has gone forth from me." And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. And he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace." While he was still speaking, a man from the ruler's house came and said, "Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacher any more." But Jesus on hearing this answered him, "Do not fear; only believe, and she shall be well." And when he came to the house, he permitted no one to enter with him, except Peter and John and James, and the father and mother of the child. And all were weeping and bewailing her; but he said, "Do not weep; for she is not dead but sleeping." And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. But taking her by the hand he called, saying, "Child, arise." And her spirit returned, and she got up at once; and he directed that something should be given her to eat. And her parents were amazed; but he charged them to tell no one what had happened. 20 5

YOU ARE THE VOICE OF CHRIST IN A CHANGING WORLD We live in a physical world that places great value on material possessions. Material possessions and wealth may bring power and status. But wealth and possessions can be fleeting. Circumstances change. It is the voice of Jesus Christ and the truth of His Gospel that remain constant. In our spiritual relationship with our Creator, we realize that we are called to be good stewards of His creation. And as stewards of His Gospel, we are called to use our material, worldly possessions to meet the needs of others. A Call for Parish Council Members St. Vasilios Church needs dedicated men and women who place their love for Christ and the needs of the Parish as key priorities in their lives. A healthy spiritual life should be the norm not just of Council Members, but of all Orthodox Christians. By fully realizing the importance of the service offered by members of the Parish Council, official representatives of St. Vasilios, a person assumes a position that demands love, fidelity and dedication to the Holy Orthodox Church and will make every effort to exemplify its sacred character and spirit. If you share these priorities, it is the church s hope and prayer that you would submit your name as a candidate for the Parish Council no later than Friday, November 10, 2017. Elections will be held on Sunday December 3, 2017. If you are willing to be a candidate for election to the Parish Council, you must attend a Parish Council Candidate Seminar, to be held at St Vasilios at a time convenient to the candidates. For more information regarding the Parish Council, please contact Fr. Chris or Parish Council President Steve Stephanides at 978-531-0777. St. Vasilios Parish Council Nomination Form I would like to volunteer for service as a member of the St. Vasilios Parish Council: Name: Address: Tel: Email: I certify that I have been a member in good standing for more than one year and am eligible to serve on the Parish Council. Signature: Date Please deliver this form, no later than Friday November 10, 2017 to: St. Vasilios Church 5 Paleologos Street Peabody, MA 01960 18 7

CEMETERY VISITS Due to the number of sacraments, 40 day blessings and memorials on Sundays it is difficult to make cemetery visits on Sundays after liturgy. If you would like a Trisagion at the graveside during the week you are kindly asked to make an appointment by calling the church office. HOSPITAL VISITS Due to HIPAA privacy rules, hospitals no longer provide a list of Orthodox patients to us. Therefore, if you or a loved one are, or will be, in the hospital, please contact the church office for a pastoral visit. Also, please notify the office if a friend or family member is in a rehab center, nursing home, assisted living facility or under hospice care. WELCOME TO OUR VISITORS Everyone is welcome in the Orthodox Church and may receive the blessed bread (antidoron) at the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy. Sadly, the divisions in the church prompt us all to work towards reunited Christianity. The culmination of this reunion will be the ability of all Christians to receive the Eucharist together. Until that blessed day arrives, only Orthodox Christians who are in good sacramental order are permitted to receive Holy Communion in the Orthodox Church. If you have any questions or concerns please speak with Father Chris. BLANKET DRIVE 16 9

All proceeds will benefit the Building Fund. 14 PHILOPTOCHOS On Wednesday, November 1st, Philoptochos will celebrate our Patron Saints Cosmas and Damianos who were venerated as a type of saint known as Unmercenary Physicians ("without money"). This classification of saints is unique to the Eastern Church and refers to those who heal purely out of love for God and man, strictly observing the command of Jesus: "Freely have you received, freely give." During the 4 th century, Cosmas and Damianos were physician brothers who became known as the Holy Unmercenaries. Their fame spread throughout the Empire as they invariably assisted the poor and the afflicted without the desire for any compensation. Because of the similar Christian dedication to the poor and the destitute, the Philoptochos Society chose to celebrate the founding of their organization with the feast day of these saints. The wordphiloptochos is the compound Greek word, philos and ptochos which mean friend of the poor. Philoptochos welcomes everyone over to coffee hour following the Divine Liturgy. Philoptochos President Haritomeni Frangias 11
