(BMI) 2011 (4) (33) _ Tishreen University Journal for Research and Scientific Studies - Health Sciences Series Vol. (33) No. (4) 2011 The Relationship Between Body Mass Index (Bmi) and Lung Volumes Dr. A.K Abdulkarim * (Received 26 / 6 / 2011. Accepted 22 / 8 / 2011) ABSTRACT This study was conducted at physiology lab of faculty of medicine and its hospitals in the university of Aleppo during 1/1/2011-30/6/2011. A total of 169 non-smoker and healthy persons (113 males and 56 females) aged between 19-30 years were subjected to study the relationship between BMI as obesity indicator and respiratory volumes. BMI was assigned into three main groups A:(20-<25), B:(25-<30), C:(>30), The FVC,FEV1, PEF and FEV1/FV were measured, the relationship between sex, length, weight, and BMI and their effects in respiratory volumes were studied, data were analyzed according to General Linear Model(GLM) (MANOVA), results showed to significant relationship (p<0.01) among previous factors with respiratory volumes except TIFNO ratio (negative for sex for men and weight and positive for length and BMI ), the relationship between BMI groups and FVC,FEV1and PEF was significant (p>0.01) and insignificant for TIFNO ratio, the group of BMI C:(>30) had negative β, partial and positive at B:(25- <30) and positive at A:(20-<25). It concluded that obesity lead to reduction in respiratory volumes. Key words: Body Mass Index (BMI), Lung Volumes, Obesity, Pulmonary Function. * Assistant Professor, Department of Physiology, Faculty of Medicine, Aleppo University, Aleppo, Syria 50
