Welcome to Saint Nicholas on this Sunday, February 4, 2018 Today we commemorate: Sunday of the Prodigal Son Isidore of Pelusium Nicholas the Confessor Hieromartyr Abramius EPISTLE READING St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 6:12-20 Prokeimenon. Mode 2. Psalm 117.14,18 The Lord is my strength and my song. Verse: The Lord has chastened me sorely. The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 6:12-20 Brethren, "all things are lawful for me," but not all things are helpful. "All things are lawful for me," but I will not be enslaved by anything. "Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food" -- and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is not meant for immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I therefore take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! Do you not know that he who joins himself to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, "The two shall become one flesh." But he who is united to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. Shun immorality. Every other sin which a man commits is outside the body; but the immoral man sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God? You are not your own; you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body and in your spirit which belong to God.

The Gospel According to Luke 15:11-32 GOSPEL READING The Lord said this parable: "There was a man who had two sons; and the younger of them said to his father, 'Father, give me the share of the property that falls to me.' And he divided his living between them. Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took his journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in loose living. And when he had spent everything, a great famine arose in that country, and he began to be in want. So he went and joined himself to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed swine. And he would gladly have filled his belly with the pods that the swine ate; and no one gave him anything. But when he came to himself he said, 'How many of my father's hired servants have bread enough and to spare, but I perish here with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me as one of your hired servants.' And he arose and came to his father. But while he was yet at a distance, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. And the son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.' But the father said to his servants, 'Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet; and bring the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and make merry; for this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.' And they began to make merry. Now his elder son was in the field; and as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. And he called one of the servants and asked what this meant. And he said to him, 'Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fatted calf, because he has received him safe and sound.' But he was angry and refused to go in. His father came out and entreated him, but he answered his father, 'Lo, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command; yet you never gave me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends. But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your living with harlots, you killed for him the fatted calf!' And he said to him, 'Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. It was fitting to make merry and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found.'"
Ill Parishioners Reminder: If you know of any parishioners who are ill or hospitalized, please provide Father Andrew with the information as soon as possible. Demetrion-Hodges Family is in crisis mode David Hodges has been diagnosed with an inoperable form of pancreatic cancer and has been given days to live. David and Christine have been stewards of this church for so many years. It would be awesome to outreach to the community to support them through forms of a meal train, daily visits to talk and pray together, calls or emails to let them know they are not forgotten. This is such an emotional and stressful time for their family and I believe that it would so up lifting to let them know that St Nicholas parishioners care and will support them in any way they can. Beading Lessons Inna Hayek is providing art lessons with beading for children right after church every Sunday. Church Bookmobile St. Nicholas Bookmobile is adding many new items for sale. You may purchase items after Liturgy on Sunday or by talking to Elaine Manneh at cell 714-337-8179 or house at 951-691-8938. What God Has Done In My Life From 50 cents to $150. By: Rosemary Georgiou In honor of Stewardship Month, I would like to share this story of the power of giving and God s gracious love for us. It happened 35 years ago. Where do I begin? There s so many events rushing through my head. I guess I ll start with the one when I was working for a dentist. He was an elderly man, and I was hired to work the front desk, as receptionist in his office. When he found out that I had been a dental assistant, my job description changed. I would occasionally when needed assist the other dentist when he was there. One day it was almost closing time and a lady came in. She was with some church organization and she was selling some hair clips and pins. She was selling them for only $5.00 to $8.00 in order to raise money for her church. I thought the clips and pins were beautiful and I had wished that I had the money to be able to buy one. But I didn t have any money. I told her how I wished I could buy one, but I didn t have money. She asked if I could help out with any small donation, it would be really appreciated. I reached for my purse and as I m thinking how much I can give all I have is 50cents. I feel so embarrassed as I hand her the 50 cents and tell her that, that s all I can give. She graciously takes the money and says to me God Bless You. I still felt so bad that that was all I was able to give. After we closed the office on my way home, I thought it would be great if my friend would pay me the $10.00 which I had loaned her. But I knew I probably never see that money again, since she was also a single mom and we both lived from pay check to pay check. You see I had an eight-year-old son, whom I never received any child support for. Not that I hadn t tried, but what the court says and what actually happens are two different things. Anyway, I had just been paid and after paying my rent and all my bills I didn t have any money lift. It would be another week before I would receive another pay check. But as I arrived home I knew that somehow, I d make it, we always did. I put my things down, kissed my son and went to get the mail. As I looked through my mail I found a Christmas card from some dear friends of mine. They were in San Francisco for the holidays. In the card was a $50.00 bill. They wrote a few hello words and hoping that we were fine, but never mentioning the money. I had $50.00 wow! Thank you, Lord! The next day was Friday and after work my son and I went down my parent s house. They were going to a church festival, so we went along with them. My father had bought raffle tickets for all the grand kids. We arrived at the festival and my brother in-law s band was playing. Shortly after, they started the raffle. The first prize which they started with was for $100.00. As they called out the number, then the name I could hardly contain myself. It was my son s name! Within two days I had $150.00, for food, for the two of us, for one week. So much more than we needed! Thank you, Lord! I guess I felt like the Lord had bless me, because of the 50 cents I gave. Maybe it was nothing, maybe it was not much, but because God sees our hearts, He knew I gave with my heart.

Dear Beloved Brothers in Christ, A Blessed beginning of the Triodion! I am please to forward this flyer to you and on behalf of the Orthodox Cathedral Deans, invite you and your God-protected flock to participate in the Sunday of Orthodoxy Observance that I and my parish are honored to host on Sunday, February 25. As you can see from the flyer, we are also inviting you to a special reception for clergy before the service. It would be wonderful if as many priests as possible can participate in this annual event, bringing our communities together to pray and witness to the faith together on this important feast day of the Church. Later this year, it is my hope that we can re-establish the Orthodox Clergy Association for our area (Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, Ventura and San Bernardino Counties) as it was many years ago. The importance of such an association is obvious and in my opinion, obviously lacking. So, let s all pray and think about it. In the meantime, I welcome you to Saint Steven s Cathedral this year for the Sunday of Orthodoxy Vespers. Please bring the vestment color of your tradition and invite your parishioners to take part in the festivities as well. Looking forward to being with you, In Christ, Fr. Nicholas Ceko

Please come for a spiritually uplifting pilgrimage! "THE LIFE-GIVING SPRING MONASTERY" BY OUR ST. PAUL'S PARISHIONERS RITA DEBBANEH WHO IS 16 YEARS OLD! In a world where simple things, like an iphone or what celebrities are up to, can easily become a time-consuming idol, it s hard to focus on the more important things in life, like God and prayer. It s not that difficult to be caught up in the new gadgets and fads of this generation. However, at the Life-Giving Spring Monastery, staying in touch with our Christian Orthodoxy is much simpler. Whenever I go to the Monastery, there are lots of families, with their children, in search of a closer connection to God. The nuns are kind-hearted and patient, and often invite us to dine with them after Orthros or Vespers. During the day, my sister and I like to help them with their chores, or sit and chat with them. The Chapel and Church are gorgeous and one feels at peace when listening to their services. There is a feeling of serenity that simply can t be achieved with our ordinary lives. The Monastery is a great place for families to reconnect with God and Christianity. I encourage my friends and their families in St-Paul Church to visit and enjoy the peacefulness of nature, the nuns and most importantly, the simplicity of connecting with our faith.
