NEWSPAPER EVALUATION SHEET Country: GREECE Newspaper: Kathimerini, Daily and Sunday edition Introduction The newspaper Kathimerini, is a daily morning high-quality newspaper, known for its conservative right-of-centre ideological orientation. Apart from the Greek language edition, the Kathimerini English Edition daily newspaper is also published, which is distributed exclusively with the International Herald Tribune. Originally founded in 1902 by Vlahou s family, it has been private-owned by I KATHIMERINI SA of Aristidis Alafouzos, since 1988. The methodology for assessing Kathimerini newspaper is based on four Indicators, built in the framework of MEDIVA project (see MEDIVA Diversity Indicators, a Tool Kit), which aimed at monitoring and evaluating the newspaper s capacity to reflect migration related diversity and promote migrant integration. The evaluation of indicators 2-4 and the calculation of relevant scores attributed to them were based on the responses given by the managing editor of Kathimerini, during a telephone interview conducted in February 2012. The calculation of the score for each indicator was organized along the following procedure: we tick answers on the sub-questions and hence give score on the specific questions. Then, we calculated the total score for each indicator which is the average of the sub-indicators score.
INDICATOR 2 Media news making/programme production Total Score: Medium (2.1) 2.1 Existence of specialized sections/programmes on news from migrants countries of origin EXPLANATION of scoring: There is no such a program in the Kathimerini newspaper. However, when significant news from i.e. Albania or Bangladesh emerge they are usually covered within the framework of world news section in relation to what is believed to be the interest of the Greek readership. Σύμφωνα με το διευθυντή σύνταξης, εξειδικευμένο πρόγραμμα κάλυψης της ειδησεογραφίας από τις χώρες προέλευσης των μεταναστών δεν υπάρχει. Επιπλέον, τα σχετικά θέματα εντάσσονται στη διεθνή ειδησεογραφία και καλύπτονται σύμφωνα με το ενδιαφέρον που δείχνει το ελληνικό αναγνωστικό κοινό. Ωστόσο, εάν το θέμα παρουσιάζει ευρύτερο ενδιαφέρον τόσο για τους Έλληνες όσο και για τους μετανάστες όπως π.χ. η περίπτωση της Αλβανίας ή εάν κάτι σημαντικό συμβαίνει στο Μπαγκλαντές, τότε μπορεί θα τυγχάνει δημοσιογραφικής κάλυψης, καταλήγει ο ερωτώμενος. 2.2 If there are such programmes in newspapers, are they one of the most visible pages of the newspaper? thing at all 2.3 Existence of programmes in the languages of the main migrant groups of the country EXPLANATION of scoring: The only foreign language newspaper is the weekly English edition of Athens News, but it is not consider to be a migrant related outlet as its main readership is foreign people visiting Greece. Όπως επισημαίνεται η μόνο ξενόγλωσση έκδοση είναι εκείνη της Athens News. Ωστόσο, η εφημερίδα εκδίδεται στα αγγλικά και δεν απευθύνεται σε μετανάστες αλλά γενικότερα σε ξένους που επισκέπτονται ή μένουν προσωρινά στην Ελλάδα. 2.4 Existence of specialized journalists on migrants and diversity issues High: 5 EXPLANATION of scoring: There are certain specialized journalists, although they are qualified as such because of their long term interest and involvement in migration news. They had not received any training on the issues. 2.5 Filtering of migrant-related news 2.5.1 Sources for the news and verifying information (fact-checking) Medium: 3 EXPLANATION of scoring: The interviewee confirms the use of several source including occasionally migrants sources. But it was specified that this applies only when the news or information received is not considered to be reliable. Ο ερωτώμενος επιβεβαιώνει την χρήση πολλών πηγών ειδήσεων, π.χ. δημοσιογραφικά και τοπικά πρακτορεία ειδήσεων, οι ρεπόρτερ της εφημερίδας που αντλούν ειδήσεων μέσα από τα υπουργεία. Αναφέρεται, ωστόσο, ότι η διασταύρωση των πηγών και της πληροφορίας εξαρτάται επί το πλείστον από την σημαντικότητα της είδησης και την αξιοπιστία της πηγής. Έτσι, σύμφωνα με τα λεγόμενα του ερωτώμενου, εάν ο φορέας που διακινεί την είδηση θεωρείται αξιόπιστος τότε δεν γίνεται η διασταύρωση. Στην περίπτωση όμως που η είδηση αφορά ένα κοινωνικό γεγονός ή μια καταγγελία για κακομεταχείριση ενός μετανάστη, τότε η διασταύρωση των πηγών και στοιχείων συμπεριλαμβανομένου των ίδιων των μεταναστών θεωρείται απαραίτητη. 2.5.2 Who chooses what are the migration related news to be published EXPLANATION of scoring: The reporter has a say but the final decision is taken by the news director Η συνήθης πρακτική που ακολουθείται, σύμφωνα πάντα με τον ερωτώμενο, είναι ότι ο ρεπόρτερ που παρακολουθεί το θέμα, το προτείνει τη κάλυψή του στον αρχισυντάκτη του ελεύθερου ρεπορτάζ. Εκείνος με τη σειρά του θα το αναφέρει στην σύσκεψη με τη διεύθυνση σύνταξης.στο τέλος είναι ο διευθυντής σύνταξης εκείνος που θα αποφασίσει για τη δημοσίευση ή όχι του προτεινόμενου θέματος. 2.5.3 Does the newspaper or its web news site have an open comments section (reacting to published articles)? If they have it, do they edit it for racist language? High: 5 EXPLANATION of scoring: Readers letters and comments are checked for racist or xenophobic attitudes and language. EXPLANATION of scoring: There are no specific ethical reporting guidelines in place, apart from the fundamental principals attached to the journalism profession and the responsibility that the newspaper assumes voluntarily (in relation to its own character as a quality newspaper). INDICATOR 3: MEDIA RECRUITMENT AND EMPLOYMENT PRACTICES 3.1 Application of measures that are aimed at ensuring that the company s staff reflects the ethnic composition of the migrant population EXPLANATION of scoring: There are neither special policies nor specific practices concerning the recruitment and employment of migrants among the Kathimerini staff. As the interviewee argued, the migrants are not to be found among their journalistic staff, simply because first generation migrants to Greece lacked the proper human capital (linguistic skill etc.) to enter the profession. Δεν υπάρχει κάποια ειδική πολιτική πρόσληψης δημοσιογράφων μεταναστευτικής προέλευσης. Ωστόσο, όπως δηλώνει ο ερωτώμενος, εάν κάποιος κάνει σωστά τη δουλειά του και η χρήση της ελληνική γλώσσας ανταποκρίνεται στο επίπεδο της Καθημερινής, τότε δεν υπάρχει κανένα εμπόδιο να προσληφθεί ως δημοσιογράφος. 3.2 Discrimination in the recruitment of third country nationals as media professionals 3.2.1 Existence of anti-discrimination measures aimed at preventing discrimination in the recruitment practices of the specific media EXPLANATION of scoring: According to interviewee s opinion, there is no discrimination in the media labour market against migrants. Hence there is no need, in his view, to implement any special policies or outreach schemes. INDICATOR 1 MEDIA CONTENT The evaluation of indicator 1 is qualitative in nature and based on data processing that was obtained by the monitoring of the daily and Sunday editions of Kathimerini newspaper during the sampling period. The period of sampling was organised around three periods. The selected dates for each period are: 1 st Period: 23-29 November 2011 2 nd Period: 25 31 January 2012 3 rd Period: 7-28 February 2012 The assessment of the media content of Kathimerini used as unit of analysis the individual articles/reports/news items on full newspaper. Then, we count the total number of items of newspaper for the period coded and find out how many of those items are related to migration or refer to migrants (for more details see the table below). Finally, the total mean score of the indicator 1 is based on the average of the sub-indicators score 1.1-1.4.
