TROODOS EXCURSION FEBRUARY 2007 MARCH 2007 The Student Union and Office of Student Affairs organized a oneday trip to the snowy Troodos mountains on Sunday, February 25 th, 2007. About 80 students enjoyed the well organized trip. Upon arrival to the Troodos Square each student was given a breakfast bag and around 1 p.m. a lunch pack. All food packs were professionally prepared by the Student Union s President, Hanif Mohammed. The rest of the time everyone enjoyed snow games, socializing and picture taking. The Student Union President: Hanif, Vice President: Gugu and Secretary: Yanick did a great job in organizing and ensuring a smooth day throughout the day at Troodos. FIRST MBA GRADUATE Jaimini H. Dave is our first MBA graduate as of February 2007. He gave his oral presentation on his thesis in front of Dr. Louca, Head of the Business Department and his advisor, as well as a couple of other faculty and staff. Dave did an excellent job presenting his thesis work titled "Strategic Marketing in Global Perspective: Opportunities and limitations of the Indian Telecommunications Industry. We all wish the best of luck and a successful career to Dave. LOUIS TOUR PRESENTATION Mrs. Sophia Vorka, Marketing Manager of Louis Group of Hotels was the guest speaker of the Hospitality Dept. She was at Americanos College presenting the Distribution of the Hotel Product on January 17 th. Students of the Hospitality Marketing attended the presentation and asked Mrs. Vorka for interesting information. FOOTBALL TEAM SPRING 2007 Americanos College participates now in the Cyprus Higher Education Sports Tournaments with our own football team, as well, and not just a futsal team. With the professional guidance and action plans of the team s coach, Mr. Angelos Agathangelou, the team plays strategically against the competitors.
COMPETITIONS The table football and pool table fans had the chance to participate in the competition on March 12 th, 2007. Students were energetically and competitively playing against their competitors. The games lasted about three hours. The final winners were Singh Gagandeep for the table football and Singh Davinder for the pool table. Good game to all! BLOOD DONATION Americanos College students, administration, faculty and staff responded positively to the request and need of the General Hospital for blood donation. The Blood Donation Unit was at the College on March 1 st for two hours and was very satisfied with the volunteer blood donors who showed up willing to help peers who are in need of blood. Thanks to all the blood donors for their humane action. BANGLADESH CRICKET TOURNAMENT The Bangladeshi Students Cricket team were the champions during the Cricket Tournament 2006. The champions cup was awarded to Mr. Americanos during the Bangladesh Independence Day celebration in December.
FACE-TO-FACE Mr. George Markatos Mr. George Markatos is a Hospitality & Catering Department faculty. Upon successfully completing an HND in Culinary Arts in Cyprus he moved to the UK to study for a BSc. in Hotel and Catering Management. This was followed by a MSc. in International Hospitality and Tourism Management. During his studies he continued to develop his career in the industry that he was involved in since the age of fifteen. He reached the position of Assistant Chef in the kitchen department, and also Banqueting Manager for the Hilton in Sheffield. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Business Administration (D.B.A.) How long have you been teaching at Americanos College in the Tourism Dept? This year I will complete my third year of teaching here. What is your favorite part of teaching and why? When students challenge my knowledge. I find it interesting as it means I have to keep up to date with new research and debates within the hospitality and tourism industry. I try to stimulate their curiosity in their area of study. After that it is up to them to use this knowledge. What do you think about dealing with foreign students on a daily basis? There is a saying When in Rome act like a Roman. It is vital for the students to understand and respect this. Foreign or non foreign, my main understanding is that they are all students with common needs to be fulfilled. It is important to know, as any academic should, that culture plays a vital role to the student s behavior. To this give and take relationship I try to get into their shoes based on my experiences. What would you like to offer to your students through your academic and work experience? Respect, the meaning of continued knowledge and research, and the real facts What are your hobbies and interests? I like football a lot and chess, but I guess my biggest interest is music. I guess it is part of my life. Your short term and long term goals? My short term goal is to finish my PhD as best as possible. My long terms goal is to have a happy and healthy family. Any valuable advice you would like to give to Americanos College students? The path to success is narrow and long. It takes lots of sweat and perhaps time. Patience and the time will come. What is your motto of life? That, which does not kill me, makes me stronger.

Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, the respected octogenarian architect of Nepal's peace process, on Monday said King Gyanendra should abdicate -- a major about-turn for a politician previously seen as sympathetic to the throne. "The prime minister was the only man in the ruling parties who supported the monarchy and now he has given it up," Rabindra Khanal, a political analyst and professor from Nepal's Tribhuvan University, told AFP. Koirala had argued that the king, viewed by his supporters as a god-like figure, was trying to undermine a peace deal between the government and the fiercely republican Maoist rebels. Politicians have already accused the king's allies of stirring a recent wave of deadly ethnic unrest in the south of the country. Beta carotene pills may not save vision (Yahoo online) CHICAGO - Carrots, rich in beta carotene, long have been thought to sharpen eyesight, but a new study suggests that beta carotene pills are powerless against a common type of vision loss among older people. Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in people 65 and older. The condition blurs the center of the field of vision, making it difficult to read, drive, thread a needle and even recognize faces. It affects more than 10 million Americans and there is no cure. Πειράματα σε ποντίκια έδειξαν ότι η άσκηση αυξάνει τα νευρικά κύτταρα στην οδοντωτή έλικα, ένα τμήμα του ιππόκαμπου στον εγκέφαλο που είναι γνωστό ότι σχετίζεται με την απώλεια μνήμης που αρχίζει να εμφανίζεται στους περισσότερους ανθρώπους μετά τα 30. Στο τέλος του προγράμματος αυτού μετρήθηκε η φυσική τους κατάσταση και υποβλήθηκαν εκ νέου σε μαγνητική τομογραφία. Η σύγκριση έδειξε ότι η αιμάτωση της οδοντωτής έλικας είχε αυξηθεί, και μάλιστα όσο μεγαλύτερη ήταν η βελτίωση της φυσικής κατάστασης, τόσο περισσότερο είχε αυξηθεί η ροή του αίματος.
