In the Gospel of John, Pontius Pilate poses this question to our Lord Jesus: So you are a king? Jesus answered, You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I have come into the world, to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears my voice. Pilate responding cynically to Him saying: What is truth? [John 18:37-38] Do we really know the truth? Since the year 843 our Holy Orthodox Church has been celebrating the victory of truth over falsehood on the First Sunday of Lent. It was then that collectively our Church recognized the appropriateness of venerating icons and allowing them to be used in the worship of the True God. It was a victory of Orthodoxy over the heresies. It was a victory of the truth over falsehood. The truth is rooted in the Good and Loving God, and the falsehood is rooted in the dark evil that has infested God s good world and humanity. Evil is always at work in this world. At this time of year in particular, as we prepare ourselves through fasting, self-examination, repentance, and confession, the devil is not far from us. As we strive to grow closer to God, as we reach higher in our spiritual climb, we will confront the evil brought about by the devil and his angels. The martyrs of the Church were put to death because of the truth. The truth is the Good News of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He tells us in John 14:6: I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life, no one comes to the Father but by Me. There is no salvation except through the truth of Jesus. Christ also reminds us that the Holy Spirit is the truth. In John 16:13, the evangelist reports that: when the Spirit of Truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth. Truth is found in the things of God. Our Christian predecessors, the fathers of the Church, relied on their Faith and their spiritual phronema to extricate the truth from the falsehood. They relied on their Faith and their commitment to God to explain to the Church and the world that the images of Jesus and the Saints were appropriate to be used in the expression of the true and correct Orthodox Worship of God, our Trinitarian God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Our society is testing our commitment to God. Are we growing closer to God, or are we complacent in allowing these falsehoods to seethe into the fabric of our family s lives? How is our personal commitment to God. Do we recall the lives of the Saints and the struggles of the martyrs and the confessors - made on behalf of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and on behalf of us and our religious freedom? Do we continue to venerate the icons over which so much innocent, righteous blood was spilled? Do we attend the services of God s Holy Church in preparation for the Glorious Pascha of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ? The Lenten Journey has begun. The season of repentance is here; the Great Fast has begun. The schedule of extra services are designed to give us more opportunities to come into contact with the Living God in the community of the believers! The services allow us to be exposed to a deeper understanding of our own personal prayer-life. Pascha this year will be celebrated on April 16, and it will be here before we know it. Let us be charitable, let us fast, and let us pray in anticipation of that glorious central event of our Christian Faith and Hope: the celebration of the Pascha of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. For this is the Triumph of Orthodoxy - an upright belief in the Holy Trinity - God s three persons - through whom we might be saved one day! This is the Truth!

Apolytikion of the Holy Trinity Plagal Tone 4 Blessed are You, O Christ our God, who made fishermen all-wise, sending upon them the Holy Spirit and, through them, netting the world. O Loving One, glory to You. Kontakion Tone 1 O God, when You come upon the earth in glory, the whole world will tremble. A river of fire will bring all before Your Judgment Seat and the books will be opened, and everything in secret will become public. At that time, deliver me from the fire which never dies, and enable me to stand by Your right hand, O Judge most just. Meatfare Sunday, also called Sunday of the Last Judgment Today is called Meatfare Sunday because it is the last day meat or poultry is eaten before Pascha for those keeping the Lenten Fast. It is also called Sunday of the Last Judgment, which refers to the Gospel lesson (Matthew 25:31-46) in which the Lord tells us that we shall be judged at the end according to the love we have shown for our brother.

THE EPISTLE I Corinthians 8:8-13; 9:1-2 Brethren, food will not commend us to God. We are no worse off if we do not eat, and no better off if we do. Only take care lest this liberty of yours somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. For if anyone sees you, a man of knowledge, at a table in an idol's temple, might he not be encouraged, if his conscience is weak, to eat food offered to idols? And so by your knowledge this weak man is destroyed, the brother for whom Christ died. Thus, sinning against your brethren and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ. Therefore, if food is a cause of my brother's falling, I will never eat meat, lest I cause my brother to fall. Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are not you my workmanship in the Lord? If to others I am not an apostle, at least I am to you; for you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord. THE GOSPEL Matthew 25:31-46 The Lord said, "When the Son of man comes in his glory and all the holy angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate them one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, and he will place the sheep at his right hand, but the goats at the left. Then the king will say to those at his right hand, 'Come, O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.' Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?' And the King will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.' Then he will say to those at his left hand, 'Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.' Then they also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?' Then he will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it not to one of the least of these, you did it not to me.' And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."
