Message from Father George STEWARDS OF GOD'S CREATION Every year on September 1 our Church celebrates the beginning of the Ecclesiastical Year. Since the ministry of the late Patriarch Demetrios in the 1990 s, the Patriarchate of Constantinople has supported and sponsored discussions, research, and conferences on the environment, spearheaded by our current Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and often assisted by Metropolitan John Zizioulas, a professor and theologian. Metropolitan John reminds us that the church is waking up to its past and present responsibilities, and it is being gradually accepted that science cannot solve the problem alone. It needs people s co-operation, and religion has a vital role to play there. He is emphasizing that as Orthodox Christians, we have to live an ethically responsible life. Ethics reflects our ethos. Our principles, moral values, and moral philosophy reflect our ethos, our character. But, herein lies the problem. As humans our society, and especially the American society, would have us see ourselves at the center of our ethical understanding, as exemplified by the everincreasing erroneous belief of the pro-choice movement. The Metropolitan emphasizes:... we must revise our ethics. We must move from an understanding where the human is at the center to a cosmic ethics. Human beings are a part of the natural cosmos, and thus their salvation is a part of the salvation of the cosmos. We must apply the Orthodox ethos in a culturally creative way and explore the human body as a vehicle of communion with God and with others. This is how the Church is addressing the issues of man s abuse of the environment. We have come to a level of concern. The question we must ask ourselves is: Are we the good stewards of the earth that God expects us to be? The earth was created by God, and the whole of mankind was given a great responsibility: to become the stewards of God s beautiful creation the earth. As we live our life selfishly with no concern of the world around us, or even the people around us, we are living as the evil vine dressers from the parable in this morning s Gospel lesson. If we consider ourselves Christians, then it is up to each of us to make a difference, to follow the teachings of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and to implement our Orthodox Christian lifestyle to every aspect of our lives. This means to be good stewards of all that was created by God, especially the earth, with vast and great, but one day limited, natural resources. I read some time ago that future generations will have great difficulty finding clean, fresh water on the earth. Is this the kind of stewardship God expects of us? So, it is up to each and every one of us. Fortunately, almost every municipality in the country has some form of recycling program in place, but that is not enough. Many of us grew up living far simpler lives. In numerous cases our parents and grandparents suffered and sacrificed to provide us with the necessities of life; yet, we seem to struggle to provide ourselves with the luxuries and extras in our lives. We have allowed yesterday s luxuries to become today s necessities. We are the stewards of the Church, and, more importantly, we are the stewards of the whole earth. We have received a commission by our Lord to love our neighbors as ourselves, to share the saving message of the Gospel with all, and to be good stewards of the creation that was given to us.

Resurrection Apolytikion Tone 4 When the women Disciples of the Lord had learned from the Angel the joyful message of the Resurrection and had rejected the ancestral decision, they cried aloud to the Apostles triumphantly: Death has been despoiled, Christ God has risen, granting His great mercy to the world. Apolytikion for the Saints Tone 3 You forsook the ways and false religion of your ancestors, for you considered the saving faith to be wealth irremovable. And as you followed the steps of the Lord of all, you were enriched by the gifts of His grace divine. Glorious Adrian, beseech Christ God fervently, entreating Him to save our souls. Apolytikion of the Holy Trinity Plagal Tone 4 Blessed are You, O Christ our God, who made fishermen all-wise, sending upon them the Holy Spirit and, through them, netting the world. O Loving One, glory to You. Kontakion Tone 4 Both Joachim and Anna from their sterility's stigma, and Adam and Eve from their mortality's ruin have been set free, O immaculate Maid, by your holy nativity. For this do your people hold celebration, redeemed from the guilt of transgression as they cry to you, "The barren one bears the Theotokos, the nourisher of our Life."

THE EPISTLE I Corinthians 16:13-24 BRETHREN, be watchful, stand firm in your faith, be courageous, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love. Now, brethren, you know that the household of Stephanas were the first converts in Achaia, and they have devoted themselves to the service of the saints; I urge you to be subject to such men and to every fellow worker and laborer. I rejoice at the coming of Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicos, because they have made up for your absence; for they refreshed my spirit as well as yours. Give recognition to such men. The churches of Asia send greetings. Aquila and Prisca, together with the church in their house, send you hearty greetings in the Lord. All the brethren send greetings. Greet one another with a holy kiss. I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand. If any one has no love for the Lord, let him be accursed. Our Lord, come! The grace of the Lord Jesus be with you. My love be with you all in Christ Jesus. Amen. λέγει αὐτοῖς ὁ Ιησοῦς οὐδέποτε ἀνέγνωτε ἐν ταῖς γραφαῖς, λίθον ὃν ἀπεδοκίμασαν οἱ οἰκοδομοῦντες, οὗτος ἐγενήθη εἰς κεφαλὴν γωνίας παρὰ Κυρίου ἐγένετο αὕτη, καὶ ἔστι θαυμαστὴ ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς ἡμῶν; THE GOSPEL Matthew 21:33-42 The Lord said this parable, "There was a householder who planted a vineyard, and set a hedge around it, and dug a wine press in it, and built a tower, and let it out to tenants, and went into another country. When the season of fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants, to get his fruit; and the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, and stoned another. Again he sent other servants, more than the first; and they did the same to them. Afterward he sent his son to them, saying 'They will respect my son.' But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, 'This is the heir; come, let us kill him and have his inheritance.' And they took him and cast him out of the vineyard and killed him. When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?" They said to him, "He will put those wretches to a miserable death, and let out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits in their seasons." Jesus said to them, "Have you never read in the scriptures: 'The very stone which the builders rejected has become the head of the corner; this was the Lord's doing, and it was marvelous in our eyes?'"
