St. Paul's Letter to the Colossians (3:4-11) BRETHREN, when Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: fornication, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience. In these you once walked, when you lived in them. But now put them all away; anger, wrath, malice, slander, and foul talk from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old nature with its practices and have put on the new nature, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. Here there cannot be Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free man, but Christ is all, and in all. The Reading is from Luke (17:12-19) GOSPEL At that time, as Jesus entered a village, He was met by ten lepers, who stood at a distance and lifted up their voices and said: "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us." When He saw them He said to them, "Go and show yourselves to the priests." And as they went they were cleansed. Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; and he fell on his face at Jesus's feet, giving Him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan. Then said Jesus: "Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?" And He said to him: "Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well." 6 SAINTS AND FEASTS Righteous Euthymius the Great - January 20 This Saint, who was from Melitene in Armenia, was the son of pious parents named Paul and Dionysia. He was born about 377. Since his mother had been barren, he was named Euthymius-which means "good cheer" or "joy"-for this is what his parents experienced at his birth. He studied under Eutroius, the Bishop of Melitene, by whom he was ordained and entrusted with the care of the monasteries of Melitene. Then, after he had come to Palestine about the year 406, he became the leader of a multitude of monks. Through him, a great tribe of Arabs was turned to piety, when he healed the ailing son of their leader Aspebetos. Aspebetos was baptized with all his people; he took the Christian name of Peter, and was later consecrated Bishop for his tribe, being called "Bishop of the Tents." Saint Euthymius also fought against the Nestorians, Eutychians, and Manichaeans. When Eudocia, the widow of Saint Theodosius the Younger, had made her dwelling in Palestine, and had fallen into the heresy of the Monophysites which was championed in Palestine by a certain Theodosius, she sent envoys to Saint Symeon the Stylite in Syria (see Sept. 1), asking him his opinion of Eutyches and the Council of Chalcedon which had condemned him; Saint Symeon, praising the holiness and Orthodoxy of Saint Euthymius near whom she dwelt, sent her to him to be delivered from her error (the holy Empress Eudocia is commemorated Aug. 13). He became the divine oracle of the Church, or rather, "the vessel of divine utterance," as a certain historian writes. He was the instructor and elder of Saint Sabbas the Sanctified. Having lived for ninety - six years, he reposed in 473, on January 20. Maximus the Confessor - January 21 The divine Maximus, who was from Constantinople, sprang from an illustrious family. He was a lover of wisdom and an eminent theologian. At first, he was the chief private secretary of the Emperor Heraclius and his grandson Constans. When the Monothelite heresy became predominant in the royal court, out of hatred for this error the Saint departed for the Monastery at Chrysopolis (Scutari), of which he later became the abbot. When Constans tried to constrain him either to accept the Monothelite teaching, or to stop speaking and writing against it - neither of which the Saint accepted to do - his tongue was uprooted and his right hand was cut off, and he was sent into exile where he reposed in 662. At the time only he and his few disciples were Orthodox in the East (See also August 13). Timothy the Apostle of the 70 - January 22 The Apostle Timothy, who was from Lystra of Lycaonia, was born of a Greek (that is, pagan) father and a Jewish mother. His mother's name was Eunice, and his grandmother's name was Lois (II Tim. 1:5). He became the disciple of the Apostle Paul when the latter first preached there, and he followed St. Paul during the whole period of the Apostle's preaching. Afterwards, Timothy was consecrated by him as first Bishop of the church in Ephesus. Under the supervision of John the Evangelist, who governed all the churches in Asia, he completed his life as a martyr in the year 97. He was stoned to death by the 6

7 heathens, because, as some surmise, he opposed the festival held in honor of Artemis (Diana). The Apostle Paul's First and Second Epistles to Timothy were written to him. Άγιος Γρηγόριος ο Θεολόγος - 25 Ιανουαρίου Ο Άγιος Γρηγόριος ο Θεολόγος γεννήθηκε το 329 μ.χ. στην Αριανζό, κωμόπολη της Καππαδοκίας, από τον Γρηγόριο, επίσκοπο Ναζιανζού (1η Ιανουαρίου) και την Νόννα (5 Αυγούστου). Έχει δύο αδέρφια: τον Καισάρειο (βλέπε 9 Μαρτίου) και τη πασίγνωστη για την ευσέβειά της αδερφή Γοργονία (βλέπε 23 Φεβρουαρίου). Στη Ναζιανζό, διδάσκεται τη στοιχειώδη εκπαίδευση, ενώ τη μέση στη Καισάρεια, όπου γνωρίζεται με το συμμαθητή του Μέγα Βασίλειο (βλέπε 1 Ιανουαρίου). Έπειτα, πηγαίνει κοντά σε περίφημους διδασκάλους της ρητορικής στη Παλαιστίνη και στην Αλεξάνδρεια και, τέλος, στα Πανεπιστήμια της Αθήνας. Οι σπουδές του διήρκεσαν 13 ολόκληρα χρόνια (από 17 έως 30 ετών). Μετά τις σπουδές στην Αθήνα ο Γρηγόριος επιστρέφει στη πατρίδα του μονολότι του πρόσφεραν έδρα Καθηγητή Πανεπιστημίου. Εκεί, ο πατέρας του, επίσκοπος Ναζιανζού, τον χειροτονεί πρεσβύτερο. Αλλά ο Άγιος Γρηγόριος προτιμά την ησυχία του αναχωρητηρίου στο Πόντο, κοντά στο φίλο του Βασίλειο, για περισσότερη άσκηση στη πνευματική ζωή. Μετά, όμως, από θερμές παρακλήσεις των δικών του, επιστρέφει στην πατρίδα του και μπαίνει στην ενεργό δράση της Εκκλησίας. Στα 43 του χρόνια ο Θεός τον ανύψωσε στο επισκοπικό αξίωμα. Έδρα του ορίστηκε η περιοχή των Σασίμων την οποία ποτέ δεν ποίμανε λόγω των Αρειανών κατοίκων της. Όμως, ο θάνατος έρχεται να πληγώσει τη ψυχή του, με αλλεπάλληλους θανάτους συγγενικών προσώπων. Πρώτα του αδερφού του Καισαρείου, έπειτα της αδερφής του Γοργονίας, μετά του πατέρα του και, τέλος, της μητέρας του Νόννας. Μετά απ αυτές τις θλίψεις, η θεία Πρόνοια τον φέρνει στην Κωνσταντινούπολη (378 μ.χ.), όπου υπερασπίζεται με καταπληκτικό τρόπο την Ορθοδοξία και χτυπά καίρια τους Αρειανούς, που είχαν πλημμυρίσει την Κωνσταντινούπολη. Η κατάσταση ήταν πολύ δύσκολη. Όλοι οι ναοί της Βασιλεύουσας ήταν στα χέρια των αιρετικών. Όμως ο Άγιος δεν απελπίζεται. Μετατρέπει ένα δωμάτιο στο σπίτι που τον φιλοξενούσαν σε ναό και του δίνει συμβολικό όνομα. Ονομάζει το ναό Αγία Αναστασία δείγμα ότι πίστευε στην ανάσταση της Ορθόδοξης Πίστης. Οι αγώνες είναι επικίνδυνοι. Οι αιρετικοί ανεβασμένοι πάνω στις σκεπές των σπιτιών του πετούν πέτρες και έτσι ο Άγιος Γρηγόριος δοκιμάζεται πολύ. Στο ναό της Αγίας Αναστασίας εκφωνεί τους περίφημους πέντε θεολογικούς λόγους που του έδωσαν δίκαια τον τίτλο του Θεολόγου. Μετά το σκληρό αυτό αγώνα, ο Μέγας Θεοδόσιος τον αναδεικνύει Πατριάρχη Κωνσταντινουπόλεως (381 μ.χ.). Η Β Οικουμενική Σύνοδος τον αναγνώρισε ως Πρόεδρό της. Όμως μια μερίδα επισκόπων τον αντιπολιτεύεται για ευτελή λόγο. Τότε ο Γρηγόριος, αηδιασμένος, δηλώνει τη παραίτησή του, αναχωρεί στη γενέτειρά του Αριανζό και τελειώνει με ειρήνη τη ζωή του, το 390 μ.χ. Ο Άγιος Γρηγόριος ο Θεολόγος άφησε μεγάλο συγγραφικό έργο. Ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον παρουσιάζουν τα φιλοσοφημένα 408 ποιήματά του περίπου στίχων. Είναι από τα μεγαλύτερα πνεύματα του Χριστιανισμού και από τους λαμπρότερους αθλητές της ορθόδοξης πίστης. Η τίμια κάρα του φυλάσσεται στην Ιερά Μονή Βατοπεδίου, στο Άγιο Όρος ενώ το ιερό σκήνωμα του φυλάσσετε στον ομώνυμο Ναό του στην Νέα Καρβάλη. 7

Bring the entire family or come just with your husband and the baby. Whatever you want. No waiting no inconvenience. More private time with the priest to talk about the future baptism if you wish. 11 ON SUPERSTITION AND PARANOIA By St. Nektarios of Aegina Superstition is an unreasonable fear of God. It is an exaggeration and extremism, since balance is only retained by devout piety. The superstitious have a phobic consciousness, because they have not matured and they stand before the divine full of fear in a way that does not fit with God. Their knowledge is imperfect regarding divine phrases and they believe things about God that are unworthy of Him. The superstitious have a darkened mind and troubled intellect. Plutarch says about superstition: "Frightful is the darkness of superstition falling upon man, and confounding and blinding his power to reason in circumstances that most loudly demand the power to reason" (On Superstition). The superstitious fear where no fear should exist and are troubled where peace should be found. They always imagine that God is pursuing after them and seek salvation in necklaces, which they hang around their neck. They believe in delusions and accept as truth pure nonsense. Everywhere they see and discern the victory of dark powers and ascribe greater power to them than God. The superstitious are morally in bondage and intellectually humiliated. 15 MUSLIMS EXPERIENCE MIRACLE AT THE TOMB OF SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST By Fr. Daniel Gouvalis In Damascus, Syria stands the magnificent Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist, established by Justinian. Ever since the Arabs conquered the area (7th cent. A.D.), it was converted into a mosque [the Umayyad Mosque, 715 AD]. However there is a place in the colossal church where there is a wonderful, artistic and quite large mausoleum. This is the tomb of the honorable head of the Baptist. [...]* After the fourth finding of the head of this Saint, the found relic was enshrined in this church by Justinian in a beautiful tomb. When the Muslims converted the church into a mosque they also put their hands against the tomb. But they were horrified, because with the first hit warm blood began to run from it, and it continued to run for several days and nights. It would not stop. The panicked Arabs asked for the prayers of the Christian patriarch. He with all the sacred clergy of Damascus processed around the tomb for three days, and on the third day the blood stopped. A special script with Arabic gold letters on the monument chronicles this shocking incident. Until today the Muslim world respects very much the tomb of the Forerunner, and at the same time fear him. No one dares to approach him. Personal Freedom: Finding yourself with an enormous amount of freedom and free time may leave you feeling lost and overwhelmed. With so many decisions, extra time, and the added personal and financial responsibilities, daily life can be difficult to navigate. Relationships: During any transition in life, our relationships with family, friends, and God may become strained because of added stress and the challenges of a new environment. Losing touch with these connections can leave us feeling alone, both emotionally and spiritually. DEALING WITH IT Plan your day, every day! Now it s up to you to make decisions about all aspects of your life what time to wake up, making it to class or work, remembering to pray. Make a LIFE schedule. Planning ahead and knowing when and where you are going can keep you on track, in both your personal AND spiritual life! Know when to ask for help: Taking advantage of help rather than trying to navigate on your own can be the difference between failure and success. Identifying the people in your life that you trust and can listen to your doubts, fears, and questions is half the battle. Find a Family : Finding friends with similar interests can provide you with the right support at the right time. Still, we are only truly grateful people when we can say thank you to all that has brought us to the present moment. As long as we keep dividing our lives between events and people we would like to remember and those we would rather forget, we cannot claim the fullness of our beings as a gift of God to be grateful for. Let's not be afraid to look at everything that has brought us to where we are now and trust that we will soon see in it the guiding hand of a loving God. Growing Beyond Self-Rejection One of the greatest dangers in the spiritual life is self-rejection. When we say, "If people really knew me, they wouldn't love me," we choose the road toward darkness. Often we are made to believe that self-deprecation is a virtue, called humility. But humility is in reality the opposite of self-deprecation. It is the grateful recognition that we are precious in God's eyes and that all we are is pure gift. To grow beyond self-rejection we must have the courage to listen to the voice calling us God's beloved sons and daughters, and the determination always to live our lives according to this truth. Stepping over Our Wounds Sometimes we have to "step over" our anger, our jealousy, or our feelings of rejection and move on. The temptation is to get stuck in our negative emotions, poking around in them as if we belong there. Then we become the "offended one," "the forgotten one," or the "discarded one." Yes, we can get attached to these negative identities and even take morbid pleasure in them. It might be good to have a look at these dark feelings and explore where they come from, but there comes a moment to step over them, leave them behind and travel on. 21
