Passage 1 The First Labours of Heracles ὁ δὲ Ζεὺς, ὁ τῶν θεῶν βασιλεύς, εἶχεν ἰσχυρὸν υἱόν, Ἡρακλέα ὀνόματι. ἀλλὰ οὗτος ἡμίθεος ἦν καὶ διότι ἐβούλετο εἶναι θεὸς ἔδει αὐτὸν ποιεῖν ἀγῶνάς τινας. πρῶτον οὖν ἀπέκτεινε μέγιστον λέοντα, ὃν οὐδεὶς πρότερον οἷός τ ἦν βλάπτειν. ἔπειτα δὲ πρὸς ἄλλην γῆν ἀφικόμενος εἶδε τοὺς πολίτας μάλιστα πάσχοντας. οἱ δ ἔπεισαν τὸν Ἡρακλέα βοηθεῖν ἑαυτοῖς, λέγοντες ὅτι ἡ Ὕδρα πολλοὺς ἀνθρώπους ἔφαγεν. ὁ μὲν οὖν Ἡρακλῆς, τὴν Ὕδραν εὑρών, τέσσαρας κεφαλὰς τῷ ξίφει ἔκοψεν, ὀκτὼ δὲ αὖθις ἐφύοντο. ἀλλὰ ὁ Ἡρακλῆς, τὰς νέας κεφαλὰς κόψας, τὰ τραύματα ἔκαυσεν καὶ οὕτω τὴν Ὕδραν διέφθειρεν. καὶ διὰ τοῦτο πάντες οἱ πολῖται σωθέντες ἐτίμησαν τὸν Ἡρακλέα ὡς θεόν. 5 Names Ἡρακλῆς, Ἡρακλέους, ὁ (acc. The Arcadians make an unsuccessful raid on some Thracian cities. ἐπεὶ δὲ νὺξ ἐγένετο, οἱ τῶν Ἀρκάδων στρατηγοὶ ἤγαγον τοὺς στρατιώτας ἐπὶ τὰς τῶν Θρᾳκῶν πόλεις αὐτοῖς γὰρ οὐδεὶς σῖτος ἦν. καὶ εὐθὺς προσβαλόντες τοὺς φύλακας ἀπέκτειναν καὶ πολλὰ εἷλον. οἱ δὲ Θρᾷκες ἐκ τῶν πολέων ἐκδραμόντες οὕτως ἀνδρείως ἐμαχέσαντο ὥστε οἱ Ἀρκάδες δι ὀλίγου φυγεῖν ἠναγκάσθησαν. 5 οἱ δὲ Ἀρκάδες στρατοπεδευσάμενοι πρῶτον μὲν ἐνόμιζον οἷοί τ εἶναι φέρειν τὰς προσβολὰς, καίπερ τῶν Θρᾳκῶν τὸ στρατόπεδον νῦν περιβαλλόντων πᾶσι τοῖς ἱππεῦσιν. ἔπειτα δὲ οἱ πολέμιοι ἐκώλυσαν αὐτοὺς λαμβάνειν ὕδωρ. οἱ οὖν Ἀρκάδες, ἵνα εἰρήνην ποιήσωσιν, ἔπεμψαν ἀγγέλους ὡς πολλὰ ὑποσχησομένους. οἱ μέντοι Θρᾷκες τοὺς λόγους ἀκούσαντες καὶ ὀργισθέντες 10 ἐκέλευσαν αὐτοὺς ἀπελθεῖν. 10 Read the rest of the story. 10 Xenophon is alerted to the plight of the Arcadians and comes to their rescue. ὁ δὲ Ξενοφῶν, ὁ τῶν Ἑλλήνων ἡγεμὼν, ᾔσθετο γέροντάς τινας ἐκ τῆς Θρᾴκης φεύγοντας. ἐρομένῳ δὲ αὐτῷ ἀπεκρίναντο ὅτι οἱ Ἀρκάδες ἐν μεγάλῳ κινδύνῳ εἶεν. ὁ δὲ Ξενοφῶν ὦ στρατιῶται, ἔφη, οἱ μὲν τῶν Ἀρκάδων ἀπέθανον, οἱ δὲ πολιορκοῦνται. χρὴ οὖν ἡμᾶς βοηθεῖν τούτοις τοῖς ἀνδράσιν. ἐὰν γὰρ ταχέως ἔλθωμεν, πλείστους σώσομεν. 5 οἱ οὖν τοῦ Ξενοφῶντος στρατιῶται πρὸς τὸ τῶν Ἀρκάδων στρατόπεδον τὸ περιβαλλόμενον σιγῇ ἀφίκοντο. ἀλλὰ ἐπεὶ ἤρξαντο ποιεῖν μέγιστα πυρὰ, ἐκελεύσθησαν εὐθὺς καταύειν ἵνα μὴ ὑπὸ τῶν Θρᾳκῶν ὀφθῶσιν. καὶ τῇ ὑστεραίᾳ γνόντες ὅτι οἱ πολέμιοι ἠφανίσθησαν, πρῶτον μὲν ἐθαύμαζον. ὕστερον δὲ ἐπύθοντο τοὺς Θρᾷκας τῆς νυκτὸς ἀπελθόντας ἐπεὶ γὰρ εἶδον τὰ 10 πυρὰ καταυόμενα ἐνόμιζον τοὺς Ἕλληνας μέλλειν προσβαλεῖν.
