2 Read the passage and answer the questions. 2 Answer all the questions. The Spartans invade the Athenians land but Pericles does not allow the citizens to resist them. Later the Athenians fight back in a different way. οἱ Ἀθηναῖοι τοῖς Λακεδαιμονίοις ἐμάχοντο. ἐν δὲ τῷ πρώτῳ τοῦ πολέμου ἔτει, οἱ πολέμιοι εἰσέβαλον εἰς τὴν τῶν Ἀθηναίων χώραν. ὁ μέντοι Περικλῆς, ὃς ἡγεμὼν τῆς ἐκκλησίας τότε ἦν, ἐκέλευσε πάντας τοὺς ἐνοίκους ἐντὸς τῶν τειχῶν μένειν. οἱ οὖν Ἀθηναῖοι ἠναγκάσθησαν ὁρᾶν τοὺς ἑαυτῶν ἀγροὺς διαφθειρομένους. ὁ γὰρ Περικλῆς ᾔδει αὐτοὺς οὐχ οἵους τ ὄντας νικᾶν κατὰ γῆν. μετὰ δὲ ὀλίγον χρόνον, διότι οἱ Ἀθηναῖοι οὐκ ἐξῆλθον ὡς μαχούμενοι, οἱ Λακεδαιμόνιοι ἀνεχώρησαν. οἱ δὲ Ἀθηναῖοι αὐτοὶ ἰσχυρότεροι ἦσαν κατὰ θάλασσαν. ὕστερον οὖν ἐξέπλευσαν πολλαῖς ναυσὶν ἵνα προσβάλοιεν τοῖς τῶν πολεμίων λιμέσιν. 6 Read the rest of the story. 6 Pericles praises the war dead and the city for which they have died. Afterwards a terrible disease breaks out. τοῦ δὲ αὐτοῦ χειμῶνος, ἐπεὶ οἱ Ἀθηναῖοι ἔθαψαν τοὺς ἐν μάχῃ ἀποθανόντας, ὁ Περικλῆς εἶπε τοῖς πολίταις περὶ τούτων καὶ περὶ τῆς πόλεως ἡ ἡμετέρα πόλις, ὦ Ἀθηναῖοι, ὑπὸ ἄλλων θαυμάζεται ὡς πλουσία καὶ ἐλευθέρα οὖσα. τὰ γὰρ τῆς πόλεως πράσσεται ὑπὲρ τῶν πολλῶν, οὐχ ὑπὲρ τῶν ὀλίγων. οὗτοι οὖν οἱ ἄνδρες, οἳ ἀνδρείως μαχόμενοι ἀπέθανον, ἄξιοι ἦσαν τῆς τοιαύτης πόλεως. μετὰ δὲ ταῦτα νόσος τις δεινοτάτη ἐν τῇ πόλει ἐγένετο καὶ οἱ ἰατροὶ οὐκ ἔγνωσαν οὔτε τί εἴη οὔτε πόθεν ἄρξαιτο. πολλοὶ δὲ κακὰ παθόντες ἀπέθανον. οἱ μὲν οὖν ἠρώτων διὰ τί οἱ θεοὶ τοῖς Ἀθηναίοις ὀργίζονται, οἱ δὲ ἐνόμιζον τὸν Περικλέα αἴτιον εἶναι εἰ γὰρ μὴ ἠνάγκασε πάντας ἐντὸς τῶν τειχῶν οἰκεῖν, ἡ νόσος οὐκ ἂν ἦν οὕτω κακή. καὶ οἱ πολῖται ἐβούλοντο κολάσαι τὸν Περικλέα. δι ὀλίγου μέντοι οἱ Ἀθηναῖοι αὖθις ἐπίστευσαν αὐτῷ, ἀλλὰ ὁ Περικλῆς αὐτὸς διὰ τὴν νόσον ἀπέθανεν.
