The frenzy rhythms of the famous cosmopolitan bars and clubs of the island may carry you away in an endless spree until the rising of the sun. There are no strict dress code rules as to end up dancing in some of the historic clubs of Chora with your swimsuit and sun glasses it is just how things work in Mykonos... The night clubs of Mykonos are so many and so different from one another that will undoubtedly draw your attention, each for its own different reasons. Τα νυχτερινά μαγαζιά της Μυκόνου είναι τόσο πολλά και τόσο διαφορετικά μεταξύ τους, που αδιαμφισβήτητα θα τραβήξουν το βλέμμα σας, καθένα για τους δικούς του διαφορετικούς λόγους. Κάνοντας μια βόλτα στη Χώρα μετά τις 8 το βράδυ, θα διαπιστώσετε ότι περνώντας έξω από κάθε ένα από αυτά κάτι σας τραβάει σαν μαγνήτης και σας παρασύρει. Τις πρώτες πρωινές ώρες, που φτάνει η στιγμή του απολογισμού μετρήστε τα μαγαζιά από τα οποία περάσατε το προηγούμενο βράδυ. Σίγουρα θα χάσετε τον λογαριασμό... Όλα τα μπαρ της Μυκόνου σχεδιάστηκαν με μεράκι και έχουν το δικό τους λόγο ύπαρξης. Κάποια είναι σημεία συνάντησης για όσους δίνουν ραντεβού κάθε καλοκαίρι στο νησί. Είναι μέρη που θα συναντηθούν τυχαία όλοι οι γνωστοί και φίλοι, πίνοντας τον απαιτούμενο καφέ μετά το μπάνιο. Πρώτη στάση για ποτό μπορείτε να κάνετε στα μπαράκια της Αλευκάντρας και της Μικρής Βενετίας, για να απολαύσετε το υπέροχο ηλιοβασίλεμα, πίνοντας γευστικά κοκτέιλ στα τραπεζάκια πάνω στη θάλασσα ή στα ξύλινα μπαλκόνια της «βενετσιάνικης» συνοικίας. Αν πάλι θέλετε πιο ανεβασμένους ρυθμούς, μπορείτε να εισβάλετε στους εσωτερικούς χώρους των μαγαζιών, όπου η ένταση της μουσικής είναι ανεβασμένη σε ικανοποιητικό επίπεδο για την ώρα. Επειδή όμως οι νόμοι του νησιού δε σας επιτρέπουν να μείνετε στο ίδιο μέρος όλο το βράδυ κι αφού η νύχτα έχει μπει για τα καλά, κάντε μια βόλτα στo Ματογιάννι. Εκεί θα βρείτε μπαρ με υπέροχη διακόσμηση, πολύ κόσμο και μεγάλη ποικιλία από μουσικές. Λάτιν, ροκ, house, mainstream, 80 s ελληνική μουσική ακούγεται από τις κονσόλες των έμπειρων DJ όλων των μαγαζιών, οι περισσότεροι από τους οποίους άφησαν πίσω τους τη νυχτερινή Αθήνα και ανεβάζουν στα ύψη το κέφι στο νησί των ανέμων. Αν είστε τυχεροί και βρείτε άδειο κάποιο από τα ελάχιστα λιλιπούτεια τραπέζια που βρίσκονται στην είσοδο των μπαρ πάνω στο δρόμο, μπορείτε να πιείτε το ποτό σας χαζεύοντας τις ορδές του κόσμου που περνούν από μπροστά σας

Μαγαζιά με σάντουιτς, πίτσες κλπ μένουν ανοιχτά όλη τη νύχτα, για όσους από εσάς βρει το ξημέρωμα στους δρόμους. Μετά το φαγητό, αποχωρήστε για λίγο. Το hung-over μετά από μια τόσο ξέφρενη νύχτα, θα είναι σίγουρα αναπόφευκτο. Ξεκουραστείτε, ανασυσταθείτε γιατί το γλέντι ξεκινάει και πάλι κάτω από τον καυτό ήλιο των πιο διάσημων παραλίων του νησιού και σίγουρα δεν πρέπει να χάσετε πολύ χρόνο στο κρεβάτι! 104

3 SHOPPING/ΑΓΟΡΕΣ As soon as the spring makes its appearance all shop owners are back in business. There is not much time left as the summer is close so they must have everything ready. They whitewash the entrances of their shops, polish their shelves, paint the frames in their doors and windows, hang the signs with the name of the shop and the picturesque cobbled streets are suddenly transformed into shining streets where the shop windows compete with one another as to which is the one with the most impressive outcome. This is the marketplace of Mykonos, which is concentrated in Chora. Dazzling shop windows that even the most devoted enemies of consumerism cannot help but watch them. The most famous brands of the planet are here to satisfy even the most special needs of the famous visitors of the island. Αυτή είναι η αγορά της Μυκόνου, η οποία επικεντρώνεται στη Χώρα. Εκθαμβωτικές βιτρίνες που δεν περνούν απαρατήρητες ούτε από τους πιο ορκισμένους εχθρούς του καταναλωτισμού. Οι πιο διάσημες φίρμες του πλανήτη βρίσκονται εδώ, για να ικανοποιήσουν μέχρι και τα πλέον ιδιαίτερα γούστα των διάσημων θαμώνων του νησιού. Η οδός Ματογιάννι, ο πιο εμπορικός δρόμος της Χώρας, είναι γεμάτη μαγαζάκια, που παρά το μικρό τους μέγεθος χωρούν μέσα ό,τι υπόσχεται κάθε 106

Among them you will find the most famous Greek and foreign jewel houses which are full of little and big precious gifts for all. The known market of Mykonos doesn t end in Matogianni. As you walk in the nearby cobbled streets you will find shops which hide a different kind of little treasures. Many galleries open their doors every summer to welcome the art-lovers of Mykonos. Art seems to has flourished again in the island over the last 15 years as many art-lovers from Mykonos, who were staying in Athens permanently, came back and opened galleries that except from paintings host other works too, mostly modern art, giving to the much dazzling market of Mykonos a different value. The handmade mosaics, the textiles and the silver jewels that are made by the people of Mykonos with good taste and love are equally important art works and you will find them as you wonder in the cobbled streets. Περπατώντας στα γύρω στενά μπορείτε να βρείτε μαγαζιά που κρύβουν μικρούς θησαυρούς άλλου είδους. εκάδες γκαλερί ανοίγουν κάθε καλοκαίρι τις πόρτες τους για να υποδεχθούν το φιλότεχνο κοινό της Μυκόνου. Τα τελευταία 15 χρόνια η τέχνη φαίνεται πως έχει ξανανθίσει για τα καλά στο νησί, αφού πολλοί Μυκονιάτες, λάτρεις της τέχνης, που έμεναν μόνιμα στην Αθήνα επέστρεψαν και άνοιξαν γκαλερί, που φιλοξενούν εκτός από πίνακες και άλλα έργα μοντέρνας κυρίως τέχνης, δίνοντας μια άλλη αξία στην κατά τ άλλα «εκθαμβωτική» αγορά της Μυκόνου. Εξίσου σημαντικά έργα τέχνης όμως αποτελούν τα χειροποίητα ψηφιδωτά, τα υφαντά και τα ασημένια κοσμήματα που κατασκευάζονται με πολύ γούστο και μεράκι από τους Μυκονιάτες, τα οποία θα βρείτε περιπλανώμενοι στα σοκάκια. Η αγορά συμπληρώνεται βέβαια από μαγαζιά με είδη δώρων, ανθοπωλεία καθώς και τουριστικά μαγαζιά όπου μπορείτε να αγοράσετε σουβενίρ για να θυμάστε το νησί για πάντα. 108

8 PRACTICAL INFO Time zone difference Greece is in the Eastern European Time Zone. Eastern European Standard Time (EET) is 2 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT+2). Like most countries in Europe, Summer (Daylight Saving) time is observed in Greece, where the time is moved forward by 1 hour, 3 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT+3). After the summer months the time is moved back by 1 hour to Eastern European Time (EET) or (GMT+2). Daylight Savings Time (GMT+3) in Greece begins at 3 a.m. on the last Sunday of March and ends at 4 a.m. on the last Sunday of October. Language The official language is Greek. English is generally understood and spoken in hotels, shops and restaurants, so there are no communication problems. Electrical appliances The electricity supply in Greece is alternating current, volts, 50 cycles. Appliances for 110 or 120 volts may be operated by using step down transformers of /110 volts connected to each outlet. Currency Since the 1st of January 2002, the Euro (EUR) is the currency of Greece. Notes in circulation are 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 euro while coins are in denominations of 1 euro, 2 euro, 1 cent, 2 cents, 5 cents, 10 cents, 20 cents and 50 cents. Banks The banks on Mykonos are open 08:00-14:30 Monday to Thursday and 08:00-14:00 on Friday. ATMs are available in almost all villages on Mykonos. Most accept Visa and MasterCard as well as debit cards of internationally recognised networks. Telecommunications The international access code for Greece is +30. The outgoing code is 00 followed by the relevant country code (e.g. 001 for the USA or Canada, 0044 for the UK). Calls can be made from your hotel or from OTE (Hellenic Telecommunications Organisation) offices in Chora. Public phone card booths are available all over the island and cards can be bought from kiosks, mini markets and OTE. Mobile Telecommunications The local mobile phone operators (Vodafone, Wind, Cosmote and Q-Telecom) use GSM networks and have roaming agreements with most international operators. There are many private infirmaries of almost every specialization in Chora. There are four pharmacies in Chora and three out of Chora. Water Bottled water is recommended for drinking as tap water is suitable for bathing and cleaning your teeth. How to move around You will find the main taxi station in the square of Manto Maurogenous in Chora. You will be picked up from any place on the island you desire by making one phone call. Local Buses run daily routes till late at night. The Bus Station to Kalafatis and Elia is above the Old Harbour, behind OTE building and the one for Aghios Stefanos and Tourlos is in the Old Harbour. In Fabrica region in Chora you may find the Bus Station to all other destinations. Ticket Prices: 1,70 to Elia and Kalafatis - 1,40 to other destinations. Sea transportation Wooden boats depart daily from Platis Gialos and go to most of the southern beaches of the island, as some of its regions are more easily accessible by sea. For more information regarding the itineraries please call the Union of Boatmen (tel.: ). Transport to Delos Boats depart daily from Gialos in Chora to Delos, except on Mondays. Departure Times: 9:00, 10:00, 11:00, Ticket Price: 15 If you wish to participate in the organized tour which includes transport to Delos, an hour and a half tour, entrance to the Archaeological Museum and translation available in 5 languages (English, French, German, Italian and Spanish) the price is 40. Θαλάσσιες συγκοινωνίες Κάποιες περιοχές του νησιού είναι πιο εύκολα προσβάσιμες από τη θάλασσα γι αυτό καθημερινά αναχωρούν από τον Πλατύ Γιαλό καραβάκια με προορισμό τις περισσότερες από τις νότιες παραλίες του νησιού.
