I hope you had some time with your beloved families to relax and take some days or weeks of vacation to renew yourselves. Here at Saint George, we had a busy summer thanks to our parishioners. The church was full to capacity during Sunday Services and we had a wonderful celebration of the Dormitrion of the Virgin Mary with great attendance as well. In July, we had repairs on the façade of the school building and the roof. On one Sunday in July, upon my appeal, $15,000 was pledged and collected to cover the expense of the repairs. We can understand and see how much people love this church and are dedicated to their spiritual home, our parish, with their actions. We are grateful and proud of all of them. We have mailed the yearly calendar of events and most of you should have it by now. Please keep it in a safe place and consult it during the year, for the coming (Continued on page 3) SAINT ANDREW THE FIRST-CALLED (NOVEMBER 30) Μήνυμα του Ιερατικώς Προϊσταμένου Αρχιμανδρίτη Αλεξάνδρου Κιλέ Αγαπητοί ενορίτες Καλώς ήλθατε από τις θερινές διακοπές σας. Εύχομαι να είχατε την ευκαιρία με τις οικογένειές σας να ξεκουραστήτε και να πάρετε κάποια ανάσα για μερικές μέρες ή και εβδομάδες ώστε να ανανεώσατε τις δυνάμεις σας. Εδώ στον Άγιο Γεώργιο είχαμε ένα ωραίο και πολυάσχολο καλοκαίρι χάρη στους ενορίτες μας. Η εκκλησία ήταν γεμάτη κάθε Κυριακή κατά την διάρκεια της Θείας Λειτουργίας και είχαμε έναν κατανυκτικό εορτασμό στις 15 Αυγούστου, (της Παναγίας) που τον παρακολούθησε πάρα πολύς κόσμος. Τον Ιούλιο είχαμε διορθώσεις στην πρόσοψη του σχολικού κτηρίου και στην οροφή. Μία Κυριακή του Ιουλίου, κατόπιν αιτήσεώς μου από τον άμβωνα, μαζεύτηκαν δολλάρια για την κάλυψη των εξόδων των επιδιορθώσεων αυτών. Μπορούμε να καταλάβουμε ότι οι ενορίτες αγαπάνε την ενορία τους και είναι αφοσιωμένοι στο πνευματικό τους σπίτι, διότι φαίνεται από τις πράξεις τους. Είμαστε ευγνώμονες και υπερήφανοι γι αυτούς. Έχουμε ταχυδρομήσει το ετήσιο ημερολόγιο των εκδηλώσεων. Παρακαλώ να το κρατήσετε στο σπίτι σας όλο τον χρόνο, ώστε να το συμβουλεύεστε σχετικά με τις εκδηλώσεις. Ήδη άρχισε το Ελληνικό Απογευματινό Σχολείο, το οποίο είναι από τα καλύτερα της περιοχής, με αφοσιωμένες διδασκάλισες και εξαιρετικά αποτελέσματα κάθε χρόνο. Το Κατηχητικό Σχολείο άρχισε την 1η Οκτωβρίου με τον Αγιασμό στις 10:30 π.μ. (Continued on page 4)

We already started the Greek Afternoon School, which is one of the best in the area with dedicated teachers and excellent results. We wish the teachers and the students our best. The Sunday school resumed on October 1st with blessings of the waters at 10:15 a.m. Please bring your children regularly and on time to our Sunday school so the lessons can begin on time. I ask this on behalf of all teachers. Here too, we have dedicated teachers and aides that teach the truths about our Holy Faith. This year the Sunday school has a new director: Mrs. Elizabeth Manolakis who was student, aid and teacher of our Sunday school. We wish her good luck in her new mission. I ask all the teachers and aides to help her with her mission of catechism, by cooperating with her. GOYA had their first meeting and the Oath taking ceremony of the new Executive Board. I wish them success in their endeavors. We have a large number in our GOYA group. I thank the advisers and the coaches for contributing their services and making our GOYA one of the best of our Metropolis of New Jersey. We are still open to registration. Please do not let your children sit in front of the TV at home, bring them to the church and involve them with our youth group. We are proud of them, we love them and we do our best as community so they can learn, have a good time and build friendships that will continue all their lives. We wish their new president Mrs. Evie Georogopoulos and the new Board great success in this school year. The Altar Boys met and they are organizing the new groups of serving the Altar. We thank their parents for their cooperation, by bringing them to the Altar on time on the Sundays that the children are serving. They look like an army of Angels as they serve our Holy Altar. Soon, JOY and HOPE are going to start their meetings under the direction of Mrs. Sophie Exarchakis and her aides. Please bring your young children and have beautiful experiences with the rich programs that they provide. I ask all the mothers who have babies and toddlers, to join the beautiful group Moms and Tots on the first and the third Thursday of every month at 10:30 a.m. The children have fun as the mothers exchange ideas and share experiences about their young families. Our beloved Ladies of Philoptochos are meeting regularly and they are planning their charity work for the following months under the presidency of Mrs. Andronikou. Ladies of our community, if you are not members of Philoptochos, please come and join this beautiful group of women who with their love and dedication accomplish so much in the field of philanthropy. They need everyone s support. The Senior Citizen group, which I want to call the Golden Age group meets once a month and they plan wonderful activities under the presidency of Mrs. Kopanakis. I am planning to start a newlywed group. If you are married under six years, would like to make new friends, learn more (Continued on page 6) VOICE OF ST GEORGE: CURRENT ISSUE HIGHLIGHTS AND A NOTE FROM THE VOICE COMMITTEE In this issue of the Voice of St George you can find updates on the budget of our church (as of August 31, 2006) and on the status of the stewardship program (as of September 30, 2006) on pages 20-21, as well as an alphabetical list of St George stewards, i.e. of all those who have pledged as of September 30, 2006, on pages 14-15; also, articles on past and upcoming events, and announcements from our community organizations. We keep trying to improve the Voice and we count on you to provide information on the activities of your organizations and programs in a timely manner. We also appreciate all comments and suggestions that will help make the Voice more useful to the members of the St George community - send us to StGeorgeVoice@comcast.net. The Voice is produced entirely by volunteers who do the typesetting, the printing, the binding, and the mailing; still, we are responsible and apologize for any omissions, delays, and imperfections associated with this and any other (past and future) issue. Αυτό σας το ζητώ εκ μέρους των Κατηχητριών. Έχουμε και εδώ αφοσιωμένες κατηχήτριες και βοηθούς που διδάσκουν τις αλήθειες της Πίστεώς μας στα παιδιά μας. Φέτος το Κατηχητικό Σχολείο έχει καινούργια διευθύντρια, την κ. Ελισάβετ Μανωλάκη, πρώην μαθήτρια, πρώην βοηθό και πρώην κατηχήτρια του Σχολείου μας. Της ευχόμαστε καλή τύχη στη νέα της αποστολή. Ζητώ την πολύτιμη συνεργασία όλων των Κατηχητριών και των βοηθών ὠστε να μπορέσει να βγάλει εις πέρας την αποστολή της. Ο Σύλλογος Νεολαίας (GOYA) είχε την ορκωμοσία του νέου διοικητικού συμβουλίου του και την πρώτη του συνεδρίαση. Τους εύχομαι καλή επιτυχία σε όλα τα επιτεύγματά τους. Έχουμε ένα μεγάλο αριθμό νεολαίας. Ευχαριστώ τους συμβούλους και τους διαιτητές που διαθέτουν τις υπηρεσίες τους ώστε να είναι ο Σύλλογος Νεολαίας της εκκλησίας μας ένας από τους καλύτερους της Μητρόπολης Νέας Ιερσέης. εχόμαστε ακόμη αιτήσεις αν ενδιαφέρεστε να γίνετε μέλη. Μήν αφήνετε τα παιδιά σας να χάνουν τον χρόνο τους μπροστά στην τηλεόραση, φέρτε τα στην εκκλησία ώστε να συμμετάσχουν στο Σύλλογο Νεολαίας. Είμαστε υπερήφανοι για τη νεολαία μας, τους αγαπάμε και κάνουμε το καλύτερο δυνατόν ως κοινότητα, ώστε να έχουν ευχάριστες εμπειρίες και να δημιουργήσουν φιλίες που θα κρατήσουν ολόκληρη ζωή. Ο Σύλλογος Γονέων και ιδασκάλων είχε την πρώτη συνεδρίασή του, και τα μέλη του διοικητικού συμβουλίου αναφέρθηκαν στο πρόγραμμα εκδηλώσεων που έχουν για όλο το χρόνο. Τα Ιερόπαιδα συνεδρίασαν επίσης, και οργανώνουν τις ομάδες που θα υπηρετούν το Ιερό. Ευχαριστούμε τους γονείς για την πολύτιμη συνεργασία τους, που φέρνουν τα παιδιά στο Ιερό στην ώρα τους, την Κυριακή που υπηρετούν στο Ιερό. Μοιάζουν σαν στρατιά Αγγέλων όταν τους βλέπουμε να υπηρετούν στο Ιερό. Σύντομα η ομάδα JOY and HOPE θα έχει την πρώτη της συνάντηση. Παρακαλώ φέρτε τα μικρά παιδιά (4-11) για να απολαύσουν και να χαρούν με τα όμορφα προγράμματα που προσφέρονται. Ζητώ από όλες τις μητέρες που έχουν μωρά και παιδάκια προσχολικής ηλικίας να έρχονται στην ομάδα Moms and Tots, που συναντιέται την πρώτη και Τρίτη Πέμπτη κάθε μήνα στις 10:30 π.μ. Τα παιδιά περνούν ωραία και οι μητέρες ανταλάσσουν ιδέες και μοιράζονται εμπειρίες. Οι κυρίες της Φιλοπτώχου αδελφότητος έχουν αρχίσει τις συνεδριάσεις τους και το πολύτιμο φιλανθρωπικό τους έργο, υπό την προεδρία της κ.ελένης Ανδρονίκου. Προσκαλώ όλες τις κυρίες της κοινότητας αν δεν είναι μέλη, να γίνουν μέλη της Φιλοπτώχου. Ο Σύλλογος Ηλικιωμένων της κοινότητάς μας, με πρόεδρο την κυρία Νίκη Κοπανάκη, άρχισε το πρόγραμμα των όμορφων εκδηλώσεών του. Ενδιαφέρομαι να αρχίσω μία καινούργια ομάδα «των νεονύμφων». Αν είστε παντρεμένοι λιγότερο από έξι χρόνια και ενδιαφέρεστε να γνωρίσετε καινούργιους φίλους και να μάθετε πολλά καινούργια πράγματα, παρακαλώ τηλεφωνήστε μου στο γραφείο της εκκλησίας. Αυτή είναι η ομορφιά της κοινότητάς μας με τόσες εκδηλώσεις και άλλες που θα ακολουθήσουν. Ζητώ απ όλους να υποστηρίξετε αυτούς τους οργανισμούς και τις εκδηλώσεις τους, όπως πράττετε κάθε χρόνο επί δεκαετίες. Ευχαριστώ τα μέλη του εκκλησιαστικού συμβουλίου που βοηθούν στην οργάνωση όλων αυτών των προγραμμάτων και την σπουδαία συνεργασία τους κατά την διάρκεια της χρονιάς. Παρακαλώ, αν δεν έχετε ανανεώσει την ετήσια συνδομή σας να το κάνετε αμέσως. Η συνδρομή σας έχει ζωτικό χαρακτήρα για τις αποστολές και προγράμματά μας και βοηθάει την κοινότητα να ανταπεξέλθει στα έξοδά της, η οποία πρέπει να ανταποκριθεί στην υποχρέωσή της να κρατάει τις πόρτες της εκκλησίας ανοιχτές ώστε να πραγματοποιούνται όλες οι ιερές αποστολές της. Ευχαριστώ όλους τους ενορίτες που στείλατε τις προσφορές σας για το Η ενορία του Αγίου Γεωργίου είναι η μαρτυρία των αφοσιωμένων ενοριτών της που για 90 χρόνια έχουν δείξει αυτή την Πίστη με υπερηφάνεια και με πλουσιοπάροχες προσφορές. Με την χάρη του Θεού και την Πίστη των ενοριτών μας καθημερινά ζούμε ένα ωραίο γεγονός στις ζωές μας, ιδιαίτερα όταν παρακολουθούμε οικογενειακώς τη Θεία Λειτουργία όπου λαμβάνουμε την Χάριν και την Ειρήνην του Αγίου Πνεύματος επάνω μας. υναμώνουμε με το Λογον του Θεού και αρχίζουμε την νέα εβδομάδα ανανεωμένοι στο Πνεύμα και στην Ελπίδα της Ουράνιας Βασιλείας. Μάλιστα αγαπητοί μου, η εκκλησία είναι ο τόπος όπου ενεργεί το Αγιον Πνεύμα και ευλογεί τους πιστούς. Οι Άγιοι Πατέρες της Εκκλησίας μας διδάσκουν ότι «δεν υπάρχει σωτηρία έξω από τη Εκκλησία». Με την αφοσίωση στις ιερές παραδόσεις της Αγίας Πίστης μας, γινόμαστε ζωντανά παραδείγματα στα παιδιά μας και στα μέλη της οικογενείας μας. Η ένωση, η αγάπη και η αφοσίωση μας έχουν κρατήσει για αιώνες. Πίστη στον Θεό, πίστη στην Ιερά Παράδοση, πίστη στην Ανατολική Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία είναι οι αρετές και αξίες με τις οποίες μεγαλώσαμε και μεγαλώνουμε σήμερα τις οικογένειές μας, με τις ίδιες αξίες μέσα στις πλούσιες ευλογίες του Θεού. Αυτές τις αρετές και αξίες θα παραδώσουμε με τις πράξεις μας στις γενεές που μας ακολουθούν, τα παιδιά μας που θα γίνουν οι μελλοντικοί ηγέτες. Γιαυτό πρέπει να είμαστε πολύ προσεκτικοί με τι νερό ποτίζουμε αυτά τα φυντάνια που στο μέλλον θα γίνουν μεγάλα δένδρα. Την 1η Σεπτεμβρίου η Αγία μας Ορθόδοξος Εκκλησία εόρτασε το Νέο Εκκλησιαστικό Έτος. Με την ευκαιρία αυτή εύχομαι σε όλα τα αγαπητά μέλη της κοινότητας, ώς ο διορισμένος Πνευματικός σας Πατέρας, και Ιερατικώς Προϊστάμενος που προσπαθώ να σας υπηρετήσω με αγάπη Θεού, με αφοσίωση, κατανόηση και ευθύνη του διδάσκειν τις αλήθειες της Αγίας Πίστης μας, ευτυχισμένο, χαρμόσυνο, με υγεία και πνευματική προκοπή το Νέο Εκκλησιαστικό έτος. 5 Page 24 Page 5 President s Message/Mhnuma tou Proedrou Dear parishioners: I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you and your families back from your summer vacation. I hope it was enjoyable and now you are happy to be back at St. George. In August we once again celebrated the Kimisis tis Theotokos with a church full of parishioners and visitors. On behalf of the Board of Trustees I would like to thank everyone who donated and helped decorate the beautiful Epitaphion of the Mother of our Lord. Once again the procession proceeded down River Road and at the conclusion of the services the flowers were distributed to those present. A delicious luncheon was served and I would like to thank all those who donated the food and those who helped. Special thanks to Very Rev. Alexander Kile for a beautiful service. Also, thank you to Christos Katsifis for his most generous contribution for the renovation of the two bathrooms on the second floor. He provided the financing, materials and labor for the entire project. This was a project that was way over due and it is now completed due to the efforts of Mr. Katsifis. There are still many projects that are pending for this year and possibly next year and we need volunteers for all of them. If you can find time to offer your services to your church, your second home, please call the church office to volunteer. You can also talk to Father Alex or to me. We still have many parishioners who have not sent in their stewardship cards with their pledge for this year. This is a reminder that you should fulfill your obligation at this time. During the summer we had a very serious problem that had to be taken care immediately. This problem that had to be taken care of was the roof over the second floor classrooms had to be repaired due to severe leaking. At that time Father Kile asked for donations and immediately $19,400 was pledged. The work was started and has been successfully completed. We thank all the donors for their generous donation. With the Grace of God and the faith of our parishioners everyday, we can experience an especially beautiful event in our lives, when we attend the Divine Liturgy as a family regularly, where we receive the Grace and the Peace of the Holy Spirit upon us. The Holy Fathers teach us that: there is no salvation outside the Church. With our dedication to the Holy Traditions of our Holy Faith, we become examples to our children and to our family members. The unity, the love, the dedication have sustained us for ages. Faith in God, faith in our Traditions, faith in our Holy Eastern Orthodox Church, are the real virtues and values that we were raised on and we are raising our families today in these bountiful blessings of God. These virtues and values we are handing down to the coming generations with our actions. Our children will be our future leaders, therefore, we have to be careful with what kind of water we will be watering these young branches, which will become big trees in the future. On September 1st, Our Holy Orthodox celebrated the New Ecclesiastical Year. Αὐτή ἡ ἡμέρα εἶναι σημαντική ἐξαιτίας τοῦ παραδείγματος πού ἔδωσε τό ἔθνος τῶν Ἑλλήνων σέ ὁλόκληρο τόν κόσμο. Ἡ περιφρονητική ἀπάντηση τῶν Ἑλλήνων στίς ἀπαιτήσεις τοῦ ἐχθρικοῦ φασιστικοῦ ἐπίδοξου κατακτητῆ ἐξέφραζε τήν ἀναντίρρητη ἠθική ἀξίωση ὅτι ὑπάρχουν συγκεκριμένες ἀξίες στόν κόσμο μας οἱ ὁποῖες εἶναι τόσο πολύτιμες καί ἱερές καί οἱ ὁποῖες ἀσχέτως κόστους δέν τίθενται ὑπό διαπραγμάτευση. Πρόκειται περί τῶν ἀξιῶν τῆς ἐλευθερίας καί τῆς ἀνεξαρτησίας. Τό Ἑλληνικό ἔθνος ἐγνώριζε τό 1940, ὅπως ὁ κόσμος γνωρίζει σήμερα, ὅτι ὁ Θεός ἀπό τήν ἀγάπη Του γιά τό ἀνθρώπινο γένος ἐχάρισε τά δῶρα τῆς ἐλευθερίας καί τῆς ἀνεξαρτησίας ὡς ἀναφαίρετα δικαιώματα στούς ἀνθρώπους ὅλων τῶν πολιτισμῶν, φυλῶν καί θρησκειῶν. Τό δικαίωμα νά ζῇ κάποιος σέ συνθῆκες ἐλευθερίας καί ἀνεξαρτησίας ἀντιπροσωπεύει τό προϊόν μίας ὡραιοτάτης πλουσίας συνθέσεως Ἑλληνισμοῦ καί Χριστιανισμοῦ. Μᾶς ἀφορᾶ ἄμεσα ὡς Ἑλληνορθοδόξους Χριστιανούς διότι εἴμεθα ὑπερήφανοι φορεῖς αὐτῆς τῆς σπουδαιοτάτης καί μοναδικῆς κληρονομίας, τήν ὁποία ὀφείλουμε νά μοιραζόμεθα μέ τούς συνανθρώπους μας. Ἐξετάζοντας τήν ἱστορία τῆς 28ης Ὀκτωβρίου, τῆς Ἡμέρας τοῦ ΟΧΙ, εἶναι φυσικό νά σκεπτόμεθα πρῶτα καί κυριώτερα τούς προγόνους μας καί τίς ἡρωικές πράξεις των στήν Ἑλλάδα τοῦ Μέ τό ἴδιο ἐνδιαφέρον, ἐρευνώντας βαθύτερα καί τήν δική μας Ἀμερικανική ἱστορία, ἀνακαλύπτουμε μία ἀξιοσημείωτη σύνδεση μέ τήν ἡμερομηνία τῆς 28ης Ὀκτωβρίου. Τήν ἡμέρα αὐτή, τό 1886, ἔγινε ἕνα σημαντικό γεγονός τό ὁποῖο συμβόλιζε τίς ἔννοιες τῆς ἐλευθερίας καί ἀνεξαρτησίας. Τήν ἡμέρα ἐκείνη ἔγινε ἡ ἀφιέρωση τοῦ Ἀγάλματος τῆς Ἐλευθερίας στό Ellis Island, στό νησί αὐτό πού ἀποτελοῦσε ἀσφαλές λιμάνι γιά ἑκατοντάδες χιλιάδων μεταναστῶν. Σέ μεγάλο βαθμό, τό γεγονός αὐτό ἐπικύρωνε κατά τόν ἴδιο τρόπο τά βασικά δικαιώματα τῆς ἐλευθερίας καί τῆς ἀνεξαρτησίας, καί σήμερα τό Ἄγαλμα τῆς Ἐλευθερίας ἀποτελεῖ μνημεῖο τό ὁποῖο ἐξακολουθεῖ νά διακηρύττῃ αὐτά τά ἴδια ἰδανικά στούς ἀνθρώπους ὅλου τοῦ κόσμου. Καθώς, λοιπόν, ἑορτάζουμε τήν Εἰκοστή-Ὀγδόη Ὀκτωβρίου, σκεπτόμεθα πρῶτα τά γεγονότα τοῦ 1940 στήν Ἑλλάδα καί τό θαρραλέο «ΟΧΙ» τό ὁποῖο βροντοφώνησε τό γενναῖο Ἑλληνικό ἔθνος στό πρόσωπο τῆς φασιστικῆς ἐπιθετικότητος. Ἐνθυμούμεθα τήν ἀσχέτως φοβεροῦ κόστους ἀμετακίνητη στάση τῶν Ἑλλήνων προγόνων μας ὑπέρ τῶν ἰδανικῶν τῆς ἐλευθερίας καί τῆς ἀνεξαρτησίας, στάση ἡ ὁποία ὑπαγορευόταν ἀπό τήν Ὀρθόδοξη Χριστιανική πίστη. LIFE Magazine, on its December 16, 1940 cover, pays tribute to the Greek soldiers (Evzones) who, overcoming all odds, achieved the first victory against the powers of the nazi-fascist Axis. εύτερον, μᾶς δίδεται ἡ εὐκαιρία νά ἐρευνήσουμε βαθύτερα ἀξιοσημείωτα γεγονότα τῆς Ἀμερικανικῆς ἱστορίας τά ὁποῖα ἐπίσης συνέβησαν τήν Εἰκοστή- Ὀγδόη Ὀκτωβρίου. Εἰδικώτερα ἐννοοῦμε τήν ἀφιέρωση τοῦ Ἀγάλματος τῆς Ἐλευθερίας τό 1886, τό ὁποῖο συμβόλιζε αὐτά ἀκριβῶς τά ἰδανικά. Μέσῳ αὐτῆς τῆς νοερῆς διαδικασίας ἀνακαλύπτουμε καί πάλι πολύτιμα σύμβολα καί γεγονότα τῆς ἱστορίας τά ὁποῖα εἶναι γιά μᾶς τούς Ἑλληνορθοδόξους Χριστιανούς καί ταυτόχρονα πολίτες καί κατοίκους τῆς δεύτερης πατρίδας μας Ἀμερικῆς πολύ σημαντικά. Εἴμεθα εὐγνώμονες στόν Θεό ὁ Ὁποῖος μᾶς χαρίζει γεγονότα τά ὁποῖα μᾶς ὑπενθυμίζουν τά πολύτιμα δῶρα τῆς ἐλευθερίας καί τῆς ἀνεξαρτησίας. 8 Page 8 Page 21 Sunday School News Nea tou Kathchtikou Scoleiou Stewardship Update/Enhmerwsh gia thn Ekousia Eisfora Dear Parents and Students of the Sunday school, Welcome back! We anticipate a very exciting school year. Communication and working with a team like spirit will be key to all of our success. We will need much support in order to make our Sunday school programs vibrant and exciting. I ask for your prayers, patience, support and suggestions as we together go through this period of transition and evaluation. Below is the report I presented at our mid-year General Assembly meeting. It is a starting point. Please remember our collective efforts are for the education of our children and the Glory of God. The rewards we receive individually will come from our Heavenly Father. I look forward to working with all of you. Respectfully and God Bless, Elizabeth Kalatzis Manolakis Director, St. George Sunday School Report to the General Assembly Wednesday, September 27, 2006 It is an honor to stand before you tonight as the new Director of the Sunday school. Right from the start I ask for your prayers, patience and support as we embark into the Sunday school year. We begin our classes on Sunday, October 1, 2006 with excitement and anticipation. This year will be one of transition, evaluation, strategic planning and of course some change. I will not be able to report on the usual aspects of a mid year report, such as enrollment numbers, budgets, comparisons etc..because, 1) we have not begun our school year yet and 2) although I have been part of the Sunday school as an aide and teacher for over 20 years, I am the new kid on the block as far as being the Director. I ask for your kind indulgence, as I will need a little bit of time to digest and analyze the information and data I now possess, and that which I will be receiving. I am able to report on a few areas that we are working on which should be of interest. In early September, the Sunday school staff and I began a major clean up and reorganization project. We began by cleaning out all of our classroom closets followed by switching many of our classrooms to accommodate the changing needs of our Sunday school, Greek School and our community. We are currently in the process of taking inventory of all our books, materials, supplies and equipment. We anticipate having a complete accounting by the end of October. Once our inventory is complete we will organize and update our files. Cleaning up and reorganizing the rooms on the second floor permits for a more efficient use of our space by allowing for proper storage space of our Sunday school files. Due to the lack of available space, the Office of the Sunday school was housed in Mrs. Pappas s basement. Mrs. Pappas is helping us with this aspect of the project as we make the transition of the Sunday school office from her basement to our new found space on the second floor. I have also met with Mrs. Toula Karamarkos, the principle of the Greek School. We discussed the needs of our schools and how we can more effectively utilize the classrooms of our St. George community. With these open discussions and our inventory in hand, the Sunday school staff and I will be able to more accurately identify the material and physical needs of our program and bring the Sunday school up to speed. During the course of last year I was kindly provided the opportunity to spend some time observing Sunday school classes in progress and to ask questions of our teachers, parents, students, staff and Mrs. Pappas. I found that through the years many beautiful and outstanding programs and activities were created. Many programs were initiated back in the 60 s - 70 s and are still going on today. Other activities were added as the need arose. I have also identified a few areas that require change. I will describe two initiatives we have already undertaken. This year we will begin a serious evaluation on how we implement the curriculum established by the Archdiocese and how we measure our students progress in learning the material we are teaching. What good is it if we teach and later realize that our students have not learned what we have taught? There are many reasons for this outcome and we certainly do not want our students reaching the ninth grade before we realize they have not learned at least the basic teachings of our Greek Orthodox faith and traditions. Therefore, we are developing a system of accountability that will permit us to promptly identify: 1) whether our students are learning what they are being taught; and 2) what is actually causing any lack of progress. Accountability lies in the hands of the volunteer teacher, the student and the parent. When all three components are working together we will have success. If one of these three components is lacking, success will be much more difficult to achieve. We strongly urge all parents to support our volunteer teachers in their efforts to teach the children of our community. We also need to assure that our students know, understand and are able to participate fully in the Divine Liturgy before they graduate. Although we teach the Divine Liturgy throughout the Sunday school years and all classes participate in the Divine Liturgy once a from Kindergarten, somehow we are not obtaining the desired result. Despite the efforts of (Continued on page 9) Please do not forget that your Church operates yearround and needs your support year-round. An integral part of the success of stewardship in the St George community is the participation of each member of this parish. We are aware that these are difficult times for many parishioners and yet the Church is here for you regardless if you choose to support it or not. If you have pledged and not paid, please do so before the end of the year. If you have not pledged at all, we encourage you to do so and soon! The Church needs your help and welcomes any and all pledges. We thank all parishioners who have pledged and we appreciate your continued support of the St George Greek Orthodox Church.

Beginning with this year, we will work on strengthening this area of our program. We will be incorporating a half-hour session every Sunday dedicated specifically to Hymnology, Liturgics or Church History for grades 6-9. If the students are present for these sessions they should learn and understand the Liturgy. Our goal is to have all of our graduating students not only know the Liturgy but also be able to participate in it through the choir. Over the next two years we will be working on creating the St. George Sunday School Choir. Our hope is that our students from grades 6-9 will be able to join the choir when it is their scheduled day in church. We will also be working on having all of our students from Kindergarten through ninth grade participate as the choir for at least one entire Divine Liturgy service during the school year. This will require a concerted effort on the part of the teachers, students and parents. Yes, this is an ambitious undertaking but I believe well worth the effort and time. Our school program runs for 2hrs and 15minutes on Sunday, from 10:15am-12:30pm with a minute break for Holy Communion. The break for Holy Communion leaves us with 1hr and 45minutes of teaching time. Our Sunday school teachers are committed to teaching the children of our community. We know that the parents of our students appreciate the time and effort they expend into not only teaching the lessons on Sunday mornings but also preparing the lessons before coming to church. We hope that all parents will express their appreciation by doing their part in supporting the teachers and doing their very best in bringing their children to school on time. On Sunday, October 8, 2006, the Sunday school will hold a Parent Orientation Day immediately following church services. The meeting will be brief and we request that all parents who have children in our Sunday school participate at this meeting with their children. We will discuss our policy and curriculum and provide an opportunity for parents to ask questions, voice concerns and present suggestions. We all recognize that our children s success absolutely depends on the united efforts of teachers, parents and priest. My hope is that we all get onto the same train at the same time and head in the same direction for the same destination. The destination, of course, is to raise good Greek Orthodox Christians who are strong in their belief, understanding and practice of our Greek Orthodox faith, values, morals, ethics and traditions. To make these new initiatives and so many others that will be developed in the coming year possible, we will need more volunteers to teach and to help in our projects and committees. We ask that anyone interested in offering some time to the Sunday school to please speak with me. Finally, as we speak of the selfless giving of time, dedication to our children and service to our community, many special people come to mind. One of these people is Mrs. Helene A. Pappas. On Friday, June 9, 2006 over 300 people gathered in the AHEPA Hall of our Community center to pay tribute to the 40 years of untiring service Mrs. Pappas provided to our Sunday school and our community as teacher, principal and director. The love, appreciation and gratitude expressed was extraordinary. From the minute we announced that a tribute was being planned, teachers, staff, parents, students, GOYA and parish members from the past and present stepped up to assist in the preparation of this wonderful event. Attendees of the evening included Mrs. Pappas s children Margaret, Dean and Catherine along with their spouses and Mrs. Pappas s grandchildren, two brothers and forty family members. The joy in the room was electrifying as past and present parish members of our St. George family reunited and reminisced over 40 years of church history. A presentation made available by Mrs. Kay Achaves, depicting our old church at the bottom of River Road and our present church being built, was shown throughout the night along with the many messages that were sent by parish members who could not attend. The program had numerous highlights creating its own bit of history as the true spirit of Christian love and fellowship permeated all aspects of this event. It was an honor and a privilege to be part of this historic community tribute and to have the opportunity along with so many others to express appreciation and gratitude to a woman who gave so much to the Sunday school. Mrs. Helene A. Pappas was part of a group of individuals who through their untiring work, devotion, focused vision and personal example, instilled in so many of us the importance of education, community, tradition, faith and prayer. We should feel blessed to have had so many worthy role models in our lives growing up. We pray that our present and future generations will continue to work in the same Christian spirit that built our St. George community over the past 90 years. 12 Page 12 Page 17 We hope that everyone in our St. George community had an enjoyable summer and that we re all ready to begin our new ecclesiastical year. During the month of August, we hosted the church coffee hour after the Sunday Divine Liturgy. We now await the beginning of the new Liturgical year and the very full schedule we have prepared for ourselves. At the beginning of August, our Board of Governors met and established the Philoptochos Calendar. Many of the ladies volunteered to chair various events; however, we still need to chairmen for some of the activities. The following are some of our activities scheduled for the remainder of 2006: Cooking for the Homeless and Warming of America throughout the year. Baby blankets will be sewn this fall. Visitation to the shut-ins throughout the year and, in particular, prior to the holidays. Preparation and sale of baklava in November. Philoptochos News Nea ths Filoptwcou Community Christmas Card preparation, assembling and mailing. Celebrating our patron saint St. Barbara s holiday with a liturgy, artoklasia, and luncheon. Christmas bread sale. Our next two meetings will take place on Saturday, September 30, and on Saturday, October 28, in the Memorial Room, at 11:00 a.m. If you haven t paid your 2006 dues--and any previous dues--please pay them immediately. We extend a special and warm welcome to the children who join the Sunday School and/or the Greek School for the first time this year. We have an exciting year ahead of us, during which the P.T.O. will provide events and activities that promote our Orthodox Christian Faith and preserve our traditions and values as Greek Americans.
