College of Resources and Environmental Science, Wuhan University, Wuhan , China) Abstract Chitosan2based layered silicate nanocomposites are organic2inorganic hybrid nanocomposites, with chitosan intercalated into the interlayer of layered silicate via simple solution intercalation method. Compared with the ordinary composites, they excel in the structure, form, property and applications. Intercalation of chitosan with layered silicate, identifying the biology characterisation of chitosan by layered silicate, combination the advantages of chitosan with layered silicates, and constructing novel chitosan nanocomposite from molecular level, opened up the new development directions for chitosan. This paper introduced the properties and applications of chitosan and layered silicate, summarized the intercalation method, mechanism and applications of chitosan2based layered silicate nanocomposites. Their existing problems are also mentioned.
