FROM FATHER ANTHONY In last month s issue we left off discussing entering the Triodion period of the liturgical year. I had pointed out that this time of the ecclesiastical year brings us to a deeper and more spiritually contemplative state of mind. The first three weeks of the Triodion serve as a period not only of preparation to enter Great Lent in the proper mindset, but also physically conditions us for the coming fast through the gradual dietary changes presented in the last preparatory week. As with everything in life, proper preparation is the key to success in all human endeavors. This holy period of the year is no different. The Triodion, with its deeply spiritual and soul -stirring services, prepares us to properly and fully celebrate the Holy Passion and Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. So how are we preparing? Before discussing this question, let me state that those of us who have been Orthodox all our lives, or at least for a number of years, may feel that all these things stated each year regarding Lent and Pascha are beginning to sound quite repetitive. Even if we have moved here from Greece, from another part of the state or country, or from another Orthodox land, we definitely have heard these things year after year. The question is, are they worth repeating? Certainly they are! If we consider both human life and the natural world, we would be hard pressed to find things that are not cyclical in some way. We are programmed to anticipate annual events and commemorations. We see the world around us cycle through meteorological seasons, and are also well aware of the various cycles of the sun, moon, stars, planets, etc. If we are always looking forward to the many repetitive events in human life and in the world around us, how much more should we not await with much enthusiasm, both Great Lent and the annual celebration of Holy Pascha? Have we ever stopped to consider the ramifications of life without Christ having come to earth to save us from death and the power of Satan? Honestly, it s too frightening to even contemplate. Knowing that the greatest gift God has given us is eternal life through His only-begotten Son, how can we not rejoice not only at Pascha and not only on Sundays when we also celebrate the Resurrection but every day of our temporary lives upon this earth. Because of the magnitude of what Holy Pascha represents in our lives, it obviously cannot possibly be celebrated on just one particular day as if it were a secular holiday, a birthday, an anniversary, or other such event. As we all well know, Holy Week and Pascha are flanked by the preparatory 40-day fast as well as the 40-day celebration of Pascha, ending with the feast of the Lord s Ascension into heaven. This month we will enter the Holy and Great Fast on the 14 th on Clean, or Pure Monday. So how are we all preparing for Lent? As we entered the Triodion period, did we begin prayerfully planning this year s Lenten journey? Perhaps we can acquire spiritual knowledge by purchasing some reading material from our bookstore. We can also search the archived February, March, and April bulletins from the past many years on our website, to find abundant material regarding Great Lent and Pascha. Do we have a plan in mind regarding attendance at some of the Lenten services? If our children are old enough to balance extra-curricular activities with their studies, can families perhaps find time to attend some of the weekday Lenten services during the six weeks of the Fast? Again and yes I sound repetitive it is all about preparation with respect to this most beautiful and transforming time of the liturgical year. The Orthodox Church is at her best, so to speak, during Lent and Holy Week. If we have never experienced this period on a deeper level, it is never too late to begin. I guarantee that you will be impressed and transformed, and will never again feel that anything the Church has to say and teach about Great Lent and Pascha is repetitive or mundane, and without great importance for each and every one of us. May you all have a most blessed and fruitful Lenten season! In Christ, +Fr. Anthony Confession Schedule During Lent Fr. Anthony will be available for confessions during Great Lent as follows: after each weekday evening service, except Wednesday Presanctified Liturgies after Saturday evening Vespers (year-round) during office hours by appointment (year-round)
FROM FATHER ANTHONY GREAT LENT BEGINS 3/14 Beloved in Christ, the Triodion period began this year on Sunday, 2/21. With the first week of the Triodion already behind us, we offer the following traditional fasting guidelines for the two remaining preparatory weeks before Great Lent, as well as Lent itself. Preparatory Weeks 2 nd Week, 2/28 3/5: Normal Wednesday & Friday fast 3 rd Week, 3/6 3/13: Meatfare Sunday, 3/6 last day for meat until Pascha; remainder of week dairy products & eggs permitted daily through Cheesefare Sunday, 3/13 Special Note: Many sources state that fish is also permitted daily during Cheesefare Week Great Lent Weekdays of Lent: Strict fast from all animal products including fish (shellfish is permitted), all alcoholic beverages, and olive oil (vegetable/seed oil is permitted) Exception: Fish, wine, and olive oil are permitted on the feast of the Annunciation, 3/25 Special Note: It is also traditional to reduce the quantity of food consumed, as much as possible, on the weekdays of Lent Weekends of Lent: Same as weekdays except alcoholic beverages and olive oil are permitted on Saturdays & Sundays Special Note: By tradition, there is no limit on the quantity of food consumed on the weekends of Lent. As stated every year, the above guidelines represent the ideal and traditional method of fasting as a starting point. A true and spiritual fast is much more than legalistically following guidelines. Your priest and spiritual father is always available to guide you for your particular situation. The Church in her compassion, always modifies the fast for various health reasons, for growing children, and other special situations. Most importantly, our fasting must be accompanied by intensified prayer, increased church attendance, and charitable works in order to be a fast pleasing to God. SPIRITUAL WISDOM Do not be irritated either with those who sin or those who offend; do not have a passion for noticing every sin in your neighbor, and for judging him, as we are in the habit of doing. Everyone shall give an answer to God for himself. Everyone has a conscience, everyone hears God s word, and knows God s Will, either from books, or from conversation with other people. Especially do not look with evil intention upon the sins of your elders, which do not regard you; to his own master he stands or falls. Correct your own sins, amend your own life. (St. John of Kronstadt) The beginning of salvation is for a man to reproach himself. (+Evagrios the Solitary) When a man penetrates the depths of humility and recognizes that he is unworthy to be saved, his sorrow releases springs of tears, and as a consequence spiritual joy floods out in his heart. In this way, hope rises out of this spring, grows with it, and strengthens our certainty of being saved. (St. Symeon the New Theologian) Just as rain provides moisture for a seed to grow, so the church service strengthens the soul for good works. (St. Ephraim the Syrian) Prayer does not consist merely in standing and bowing your body or in reading written prayers it is possible to pray at all times, in all places, with mind and spirit. You can lift up your mind and heart to God while walking, sitting, working, in a crowd and in solitude. His door is always open, unlike man s. We can always say to Him in our hearts, Lord, Lord have mercy. (St. Tikhon of Zadonsk) LENTEN SUPPERS This Lent we will continue our tradition of Lenten suppers following each Wednesday evening s Presanctified Liturgy, which includes a short video presentation during the supper. Traditionally, we have always had the Youth Ministry Team host the first supper, which this year will be on Wednesday, 3/16. We invite our other parish ministries to again host one of the available suppers, which needs to be coordinated through the church office. Please note that I will be away the last week of Lent, so there will not be a service and supper on 4/20. Regarding appropriate food, beverage, and dessert items, please refer to the fasting guidelines included in this edition.
FROM FATHER ANTHONY LENTEN REFLECTIONS (The following is taken from Great Lent, by Fr. Alexander Schmemann, of blessed memory; St. Vladimir s Seminary Press, It has become a true classic for Orthodox Christians and therefore worthy of acquisition.) Introduction Lent: The Journey to Pascha When a man leaves on a journey, he must know where he is going. Thus with Lent. Above all, Lent is a spiritual journey and its destination is Easter, the Feast of Feasts. It is the preparation for the fulfillment of Pascha, the true Revelation. We must begin, therefore, by trying to understand this connection between Lent and Easter, for it reveals something very essential, very crucial about our Christian faith and life. Is it necessary to explain that Easter is much more than one of the feasts, more than a yearly commemoration of a past event? Anyone who has, be it only once, taken part in that night which is brighter than the day, who has tasted of that unique joy, knows it. But what is that joy about? Why can we sing, as we do during the Paschal liturgy: today are all things filled with light, heaven and earth and places under the earth? To all these questions, the answer is: the new life which almost two thousand years ago shone forth from the grave, has been given to us, to all those who believe in Christ Thus on Easter we celebrate Christ s Resurrection as something that happened and still happens to us. For each one of us received the gift of that new life and the power to accept it and to live by it. It is a gift which radically alters our attitude toward everything in this world, including death Is it not our daily experience, however, that this faith is very seldom ours, that all the time we lose and betray the new life which we received as a gift, and that in fact we live as if Christ did not rise from the dead, as if that unique event had no meaning whatsoever for us? We simply forget all this so busy are we, so immersed in our daily preoccupations and because we forget, we fail We may from time to time acknowledge and confess our various sins, yet we cease to refer our life to that new life which Christ revealed and gave to us. Indeed, we live as if He never came. This is the only real sin, the sin of all sins, the bottomless sadness and tragedy of our nominal Christianity. If we realize this, then we may understand what Easter is and why it needs and presupposes Lent. For we may then understand that the liturgical traditions of the Church, all its cycles and services, exist, first of all, in order to help us recover the vision and the taste of that new life which we so easily lose and betray, so that we may repent and return to it It is the worship of the Church that was from the very beginning and still is our entrance into, our communion with, the new life of the Kingdom The entire worship of the Church is organized around Easter, and therefore the liturgical year, i.e., the sequence of seasons and feasts, becomes a journey, a pilgrimage towards Pascha, the End, which at the same time is the Beginning: the end of all that is old ; the beginning of the new life, a constant passage from this world into the Kingdom already revealed in Christ This world through all its media says: be happy, take it easy, follow the broad way. Christ in the Gospel says: choose the narrow way, fight and suffer, for this is the road to the only genuine happiness. And unless the Church helps, how can we make that awful choice, how can we repent and return to the glorious promise given to us each year at Easter? This is where Great Lent comes in. This is the help extended to us by the Church, the school of repentance which alone will make it possible to receive Easter not as mere permission to eat, to drink, and to relax, but indeed as the end of the old in us, as our entrance in the new A journey, a pilgrimage! Yet, as we begin it, as we make the first step into the bright sadness of Lent, we see far, far away the destination. It is the joy of Easter, it is the entrance into the glory of the Kingdom. And it is this vision, the foretaste of Easter, that makes Lent s sadness bright and our lenten effort a spiritual spring. The night may be dark and long, but all along the way a mysterious and radiant dawn seems to shine on the horizon. Do not deprive us of our expectation, O Lover of man! Meetings and Events During Lent For planning purposes, we would like to make the following annual request regarding the first week of Great Lent (3/14-319), as well as for the remainder of the Fast. Because of the solemnity of the first week of Lent, there should be no meetings or activities during the day or evening, especially since there will be daily services. For the remaining weeks of Great Lent, we ask that there be no meetings or activities on Monday evenings, Wednesday evenings, or on Friday mornings and evenings due to Lenten services. Between either Tuesday or Thursday, parish ministries should be able to accommodate their needs. Everyone s cooperation with this request is greatly appreciated. May you all have a most blessed Lenten journey, and we hope to see as many of you as possible at our various Lenten services!
FROM FATHER ANTHONY Special Gift for 100 Year Anniversary For the consecration of our church, we were fortunate to acquire a sterling silver chalice set through one of our families. The set is beautiful and continues to serve us well. With so many people receiving Holy Communion on Sundays and feast days, the capacity of the current chalice is a bit limited, so the set is therefore better suited for weekday liturgies. I would like to solicit a donor or donors toward the purchase of a larger capacity sterling silver set to use on Sundays and major feast days. As you can see in the pictures below, this set has an exquisite design, and would be a most beautiful and treasured liturgical item of our parish. The cost of this set is $5,000. It includes the chalice, the diskos, the asterisk, spoon, and lance. I would like to briefly share the various benefits of this acquisition: Larger capacity diskos and chalice to accommodate larger amount of bread and wine No need for periodic re-plating as with gold-plated sets, which usually costs several hundred dollars each time The only maintenance required is periodic professional buffing, and light polishing which would be done inhouse The acidity of wine does not affect sterling silver as it does gold plate A sterling silver set will last for decades, well beyond the next 100 years Lastly, it is only fitting that the holy Body and Blood of our Savior be contained in precious metal such as solid silver when possible Since no donor has come forward, we offer the following pricing per piece, which may be more affordable for potential donors: Chalice $2,500, Diskos $2,000, Asterisk $300, Spoon $100, Lance $100 Please prayerfully consider offering this special gift to our parish. If anyone is interested, you may contact Fr. Anthony directly.

PARISH NEWS President s Corner.Dear Parishioners, On behalf of Father Anthony, the Parish Council and myself, we would like to wish you and your families an uplifting Triodion period as the Church through its liturgies and hymns helps ease us the faithful into the pre- Lenten period. I am pleased to inform you that in the past month all of our church ministries as well as church committees have been hard at work, conducting meetings and outlining their desired goals for the upcoming year. I would like to thank President Pegi Ciulla, and the members of our Philoptochos for their continued funding of needed improvements in our church. This time they are overseeing the painting project in our gymnasium. Also, special thanks to Arthur Karaliolios, who with the assistance of a team of volunteers graciously offered their time and talent to paint the inside of the gym. With respect to the Tree of Life project, I wanted to let you all know we are doing very well at this point. All of the committees are working hard to make the 100th year celebration of our Church a huge success. Because of your tremendous support of this historical event, I am pleased to inform you that 17 additional Rocks have been added to the Tree of Life. A few upcoming dates commemorating the 100 year celebration of our church are as follows: Sunday, March 6, 2016 Hierarchical Liturgy will be officiated by His Eminence Metropolitan Methodios. Saturday, November 5, th year celebration Grand Banquet Event to be held at the Shaw's Center. Also, please mark on your calendars March 20, 2016, as being the date of our annual Lenten Luncheon. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to get together as a community in Christian fellowship upon entering the Lenten period. As you all know we also take this opportunity to thank certain members of our ministries for all of their hard work and to express a special thank you to the outgoing Parish Council members for their dedication, and commitment to our church during their tenure. On March 26th our Greek School is having its Greek Independence Day program. Please make an earnest effort to come out and support our students who will be presenting a tribute to our glorious history, language, culture and religion. Finally, the Parish Council is still accepting applications from those individuals who would like to be considered for the Long Term Strategic Planning Committee. The Parish Council will be voting on the names of candidates submitted at their March 2016 meeting. We look forward to your continued support and commitment to our Orthodox faith, our church, and our community. Respectfully yours, Nicholas H.
