Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church March / April 2012 Page 1 ΤΟ ΜΥΣΤΗΡΙΟ ΤΗΣ ΣΩΤΗΡΙΑΣ ΤΟΥ ΑΝΘΡΩΠΟΥ Πάσχα 2012 Αγαπητοί μου ευλαβείς Χριστιανοί, Η ευλογημένη περίοδος της Μεγάλης Τεσσαρακοστής, του Πάσχα και της Πεντηκοστής είναι η σπουδαιότερη εποχή του εκκησιαστικού έτους. Αρχίζει από την Κυριακή του Τελώνου και Φαρισαϊου και τελειώνει την Κυριακή των Αγίων Πάντων. Εφέτος άρχισε στις 5 Φεβρουαρίου και τελειώνει στις 10 Ιουνίου. Κατά την ιερή αυτή περίοδο η εκκλησία μας με τις ιερές Ακολουθίες της αναφέρετε στα Άγια Πάθη του Ιησού Χριστού, τον Μυστικό Δείπνο, την Σταύρωση Του, την Κάθοδον Του στον Άδη, την Ανάσταση Του και τις εμφανίσεις Του στους μαθητές Του, την Ανάληψη Του στους Ουρανούς, και την Δωρεά του Αγίου Πνεύματος κατά την Πεντηκοστή. Όλα αυτά αποτελούν το Μυστήριο της σωτηρίας του ανθρώπου. Ο απόστολος Παύλος μας λέει σχετικά, «τοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν θεοῦ, ὃς πάντας ἀνθρώπους θέλει σωθῆναι καὶ εἰς ἐπίγνωσιν ἀληθείας ἐλθεῖν. εἷς γὰρ θεός, εἷς καὶ μεσίτης θεοῦ καὶ ἀνθρώπων, ἄνθρωπος Χριστὸς Ἰησοῦς, ὁ δοὺς ἑαυτὸν ἀντίλυτρον ὑπὲρ πάντων» Α Τιμ. β 4-6. Ο Άγιος Θεός μας εχάρισε αυτό το μεγάλο μυστήριο της σωτηρίας του ανθρώπου διαμέσου του Ιησού Χριστού, και τελείτε σε κάθε Θεία Λειτουργία στη Θεία Ευχαριστία. Ο Κύριος συνεχίζει να μας προσφέρει το Τίμιο Σώμα Του και το Άχραντο Αίμα Του με το αποτέλεσμα ότι ενωνόμαστε με τον ίδιο τον Χριστό και ενωνόμαστε μεταξύ μας ως μέλη του Σώμα Του, μέλη της Εκκλησίας Του. Η Θεία Κοινωνία είναι η συγχώρηση των αμαρτιών μας από το Θεό και η πρόγευση της αιωνίου Βασιλείας Του. Στην Ομιλία 3: προς Εφεσίους, Ο Άγιος Ιωάννης ο Χρυσόστομος μας προσφέρει τις ακόλουθες πατρικές οδηγίες για τους Ορθόδοξους Χριστιανούς και μας λέει, «Παρητηρώ ότι πολλοί μεταλαμβάνουν το Σώμα του Χριστού χωρίς συνείδηση και από τυπική συνήθεια παρά να προσέρχονται να μεταλάβουν με σωστή κατανόηση.» Και ποιά είναι αυτή η σωστή κατανόηση που αναφέρει ο Άγιος Ιωάννης; Συνεχίζει και μας λέει, «Όταν είμαστε ειλικρινής με τον εαυτό μας και τον Θεό και έχουμε καθαρήσει την καρδιά και την ψυχή μας τότε να προσέλθουμε στην Θεία Κοινωνία.» Ακόμη ο απόστολος Παύλος μας συμβουλεύει, Ὥστε ὃς ἂν ἐσθίῃ τὸν ἄρτον ἢ πίνῃ τὸ ποτήριον τοῦ κυρίου ἀναξίως, ἔνοχος ἔσται τοῦ σώματος καὶ τοῦ αἵματος τοῦ κυρίου. (Α Κορ. ιβ 27) Όπως πλησιάζουνε οι Άγιες ημέρες της Μεγάλης Εβδομάδας, του Πάσχα και της Πεντηκοστής ας καταβάλουμε κάθε προσπάθεια να νικήσουμε τον αμαρτωλώ ευατό μας, ας βρούμε ακόμη ευκαιρίες να προετιμαστούμε με νηστεία, με ελεημοσύνη, με προσευχή (προσωπική και στις ιερές Ακολουθίες), με ειλικρίνεια και καθαρή καρδιά συμμετέχοντας στο Ιερό Μυστήριο της Θείας Εξομολόγησις και προπαντός με σωστή συμμετοχή στην Θεία Κοινωνία. Είθε το θαυμαστό μυστήριο της Θεϊκής Αγάπης να αποκαλυφθεί και στη δική σας καρδιά και να σας γεμίσει με την αγαλλίαση της Ανάστασεως του Κυρίου μας. ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ ΑΝΕΣΤΗ! ΑΛΗΘΩΣ ΑΝΕΣΤΗ! Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church March / April 2012 Page 2 THE MYSTERY OF THE SALVATION OF HUMANITY Pascha 2012 Beloved brothers and sisters in Christ, The season of Great Lent and Pascha stretches from the Sunday of the Publican and the Pharisee (four weeks prior to the beginning of Great Lent) to the Sunday of All Saints (first Sunday after Pentecost). This year, this blessed season began on February 5 and will end on June 10. The Church through her Holy Services thus enables us to realize that our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ s Passion, His celebration of the Mystical Supper with His disciples, His crucifixion, His descent to Hades, His resurrection from the dead and from the tomb, His subsequent appearances to His disciples, His ascent to God the Father, His glorification, and the gift of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost are all one mystery. This one mystery from the very beginning of creation is explained by St. Paul who writes, God our Saviour desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself a ransom for all. (1Timothy 2:4-6) Christ has given us this one mystery of salvation and it is celebrated every Divine Liturgy through the Eucharistic offering of His precious Body and most Holy Blood. Our Lord s Eucharistic gift was, is and continues to be offered at the Mystical Supper. This is Holy Communion. Thus, Christ unites us with our Lord God and with one another as His Body, His Church. He offers us His forgiveness and the foretaste of His eternal Kingdom. In his Homily 3: On Ephesians, St. John Chrysostom offers guidance to Orthodox Christians in regards to receiving Holy Communion. St. John Chrysostom remarks, I observe many partaking of Christ s Body lightly and just as it happens from custom and form, rather than consideration and understanding. What is the consideration and understanding that St. John speaks of? He continues to say, it is not Lent that makes a fit time for approaching (to receive Holy Communion) but it is sincerity and purity of soul. With this, approach at all times! In addition, St. Paul when speaking of our Lord s Mystical Supper writes, Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord. Let a man examine himself, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment upon himself. (1 Corinthians 11:27-29) As we approach the final days of Great Lent, Holy Week, Pascha and Pentecost, let us put forth our best efforts to overcome our ungodly ways, let us make good use of this opportunity to prepare with fasting, charity, prayer (personally at home and communally in the Church), with sincerity and purity of soul by participating in Holy Confession, and especially with consideration and understanding in receiving Holy Communion. May the awesome mystery of God s Salvation be revealed in your heart and fill it with the joy of our Lord s Holy and Glorious Resurrection. CHRIST IS RISEN! With love in the Risen Christ, Fr. We were able to profit $2,000 from the St. Philothei Dinner on Feb. 19, 2012, which will be donated to the Church of Greece for food banks. We thank everyone who participated, and we request your continued support for the Palm Sunday Luncheon on April 8th. I wish to thank all members of Philoptochos wholeheartedly, whose hard work, dedication, support, and talents have made our philanthropic mission a success. Our retreat will focus on ways that we become new persons in Christ through the many opportunities we are provided in the Orthodox Church. We encourage all young people in grades JK to 8 to attend. Children 4 and under are welcome to attend with parent/guardian supervision. Students in grade 9 and above are also needed to act as group leaders and assist with other activities. Their involvement can contribute toward their community service hours required for graduation from high school. WHEN: Friday, April 13 th, 2012 TIME: 11:30 a.m. 2:00 p.m. PLACE: Saints Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church We ask that you kindly bring a peanut-free Lenten dish (no meat or dairy) for the children s potluck lunch and one nonperishable food item for our community food bank. Instructors from Paradosi Hellenic Dance Company kindly volunteered to teach dances from Thrace, Pontos and Crete! Many thanks to all who volunteered, including Julia Weddings, and Mike & Charoula Patsalis for their generosity, making our fundraiser Gala a great success, and a night to remember. Many thanks to parents & kids for bringing the kefi. We also performed at the Greek Independence Day Luncheon on March 25 th, and look forward to performing at our Greek Food Festival this summer.
