Kosta Petrogeorge Offering us the path to eternal life, our Holy Orthodox Tradition is filled with practical inspirational sayings and teachings about food, fasting, and feasting. This should be of particular interest to us at this time of year when the Church begins the God-given season of Great Lent and Pascha (i.e. fasting and Resurrection) My observation for many years now is that our traditional Orthodox literature, be it from the Church Fathers, or from the liturgical texts, emphasizes humility and balance as the aim of fasting and feasting. Below are just three little nuggets that are representative of what I mean, and I think you will find them helpful. May they be a reminder and encouragement to you to participate in Lent (which begins Monday March 18th) and to strive for humility and balance in our life! -St. Nektarios advises avoiding hardships that we cannot handle (St. of our Times p187): It is necessary to have your health which walks hand in hand with fasting. Because by ignoring your health, you might be required to leave your isolation and go to the city for medical attention. Food does not come between us and God. I would wish that you eat whatever you find for the sake of your health, so that you can remain in isolation praying rather than having to go to the city. -St. Anthony the Great, Sayings of the Desert Fathers #8: Some have afflicted their bodies by asceticism, but they lack discernment and so they are far from God. -Frederica Matthews Green Facing East p11 [a contemporary writer who offers here a personally humorous but insightful critique of the need for renewal of mind as well as body: Gary said the other day that he could feel Lent coming «like a freight train.» There is no way to prepare for a discipline like this. This is our third Lent, and I know from the past two the bottomless well of deprivation that opens in the midst of that time. I want to devour as many goodies as I can now, while I have the freedom to do so. I bought a bag of chocolate peanuts and a box of chocolate mints, plus a couple of candy bars, and hid them in my desk; Milk chocolate, after all, will be forbidden because of the milk. By the time I finished it all I felt pretty crummy. At one point I found myself thinking, I ll be glad when it s Lent and I don t have to eat all this chocolate anymore. +Fr. Kosta Petrogeorge

5 THE SOURCE MARCH 2013 Page 5 Dear Parishioners, PARISH COUNCIL I'd like to thank Paul Giannaris, Dean Kokos, George Mallios, Vee Katsaounis Mazias, Voula Monk, and Peter Pavlis who expressed interest in being considered to serve on the Parish Council. George Mallios was elected by the Parish Council to fill the vacancy of Diana Peslis. Gus Giannaris was elected last month to fill the vacancy of George Panagos. Congratulations to George Mallios and Gus Giannaris on being the new members on the Parish Council. We are thankful to Diana Peslis and George Panagos for their service to the church. I am hoping that the Philoptochos ladies have stored up energy for the upcoming busy baking schedule. All ladies are encouraged to contribute their time and talents for this worthwhile and necessary endeavor. The first baking day in the festival preparation schedule is March 12. March is a busy month. We are looking forward to the Metropolis Philoptochos Daffodil Luncheon on March 9, and the Regional Oratorical Festival on March 16, and the beginning of Great Lent on March 18. The Pastitsio and Moussaka preparations for the festival have been scheduled for March 10 and April 7. We need your help. Please set some time aside and participate in services and activities! Contact Thana Ward for more information. Please save the date! GREEK SCHOOL On January 30th the Greek school celebrated the day of the Three Hierarchs. The event was well attended from family and friends. On behalf of the Greek school staff we want to thank this year's speaker, Father Kosta for his interactive and student friendly speech that was enjoyed by all, and also thank the PTO for providing a light meal and encouraging the fellowship that followed. March is a busy month for the Greek school this

7 THE SOURCE MARCH 2013 Page 7 year. Below are some events that will take this month. First, on Saturday March 2nd the Greek school PTO will be hosting the annual Mardi Gras Event. We encourage all of you to attend for a night of dinner, and other festivities, such as basket raffle, costume parade and dancing directed by a DJ. Second, on Monday March 18th is Kathara Deutera, the first day of Lent. The Greek school will be hosting as usual the Lenten meal following vespers. Everyone is welcomed to come and join us to begin the forty day lent period. Last, on Sunday March 31st, the Greek schools of Camp Hill and Chambersburg will be celebrating Greek Independence Day of March 25th. This is a day of celebration in commemoration of the beginning of the Greek War of Independence in Traditionally the celebration begins with doxology and a parade of our students dressed in traditional costumes, followed by a luncheon and a school program prepared by the students of both schools. JOACHIM AND ANNA A meeting of the Saints Joachim and Anna Society was held on Tuesday, February 5, in the Philoptochos Room with 43 people in attendance. Following a review and discussion of Society plans for the coming year, a luncheon was hosted by Sophia Kaldes, Koula Kokos, and Christina Stamos. The next regular meeting of the Society will take place at 11:00 am on Tuesday, March 5, in the Philoptochos Room. The guest speaker will be Dr. Daniel Weber, Director of Obstetrics and Gynecology Education at Lancaster General Hospital, who will make a presentation on Greece's role in World War II, particularly the heroic efforts of Archbishop Damaskinos, in saving the lives of a large number of its Jewish population during the Holocaust. On Wednesday, April 3, the Society will meet at Dickinson College for a lecture by Dr. Christofilis Maggidis, Chairman of the Department of Archaeology, on the Parthenon marbles and issues of cultural heritage, as well as a visit to the archaeology lab to see the dig simulator. Dr. Maggidis devotes his summer months at archeological sites in Greece. Further information on the day's schedule and transportation to the school will be included in the Sunday and weekly bulletins. 8 THE SOURCE MARCH 2013 Page 8 ST. ELIZABETH S WOMAN S STUDY GROUP The St. Elizabeth s Woman s Study Group will resume our meetings on January 23 rd. Our book will be The Young Man, The Gurus and Elder Paisios. This powerful memoir tells the story of a Greek youth who, out of a desire to know the truth empirically, began to experiment in yoga, hypnotism, and various occult techniques. Eventually drawn back to the Faith of his forefathers Orthodox Christianity he visited the ancient monastic republic of Mount Athos in his native Greece, where he was brought to a knowledge of the Truth of Jesus Christ by the saintly Elder Paisios ( ). Nevertheless, believing he had only found part of the truth on the Holy Mountain, he chose to give the same opportunity to Hindu yogis that he had given to Elder Paisios and other Orthodox monks. Thus, at the age of twenty-five, he embarked on a trip to India, where he undertook his search in the ashrams of three famous gurus, one of whom was worshipped as a god. His experiences in India, along with his subsequent encounters with Elder Paisios on Mount Athos, are recounted in the present book in vivid detail. This book is available through our Holy Trinity Bookstore or at Our group meets the 2 nd and 4 th Wednesdays of each month in the Church Library from 5:30 to 7:00 pm. Light refreshments are served. Father Arseny ( ): Priest, Prisoner, Spiritual Fatheris a translation of a Russian book that was secretly compiled and disseminated during the Soviet era. It consists of many vignettes in the life of a contemporary saint: a highly educated man and former professor who not only survived the special camps of the Stalinist era where people were in effect sentenced to death through starvation and hard labor, but who never ceased to minister with extraordinary love to all he encountered, even in the most horrific, life-threatening conditions. He saw Christ in everyone, even the criminals, the party members, his torturers and betrayers. His simple yet profound actions and their effects tumble from the pages in a heart-warming and inspiring way as told by various people whom he touched. This class will attempt to uncover the "hidden" books of the bible that even Protestants don't know about. Lots of exciting stories revealed! Bring an Orthodox Study Bible if you have one, just come otherwise. NEOHORITON SYLLOGOS MEETING Just a reminder that the annual meeting of the Syllogos Neohoriton will be held on Sunday, March 17, after Divine Liturgy. I received this from a parishioner and thought it worth putting in the Source as we head into Lent - Fr. Mark A friend posted on Facebook that she hates Lent, because it's all about guilt. No wonder she doesn't like Lent! That's not what it is supposed to be. It's not about giving up something you like, or even about learning selfcontrol. It's certainly not about guilt. The original, ancient practice is giving up meat and dairy--mainstays of the traditional diet--to learn how to control the passions and thereby grow closer to God. It's like some people going off Facebook for a while, to focus on what's really important in their lives and get their balance back. It's like realizing life is too hectic and taking time out for a quiet walk through a sunny, flower-filled meadow. It's like pushing aside the bills and the mail and the busy-ness of daily life and taking time to knit a pair of baby booties for an expectant friend. It's like putting away your long To-Do list and hanging out with a friend you haven't seen in a long time, because relationships are important, and people matter more than things. It's putting your life and your spirit back into kilter again. That's what Lent is about. 11 THE SOURCE MARCH 2013 Page 11 MAY GREEK FESTIVAL HELP May , 2013 As all of you know our Annual Greek Festival is the largest fundraising activity for our Church and requires a lot of work from a lot of parishioners. Presently, over 30% of our Church s annual budget income comes from the Festival. The need is clear, everyone must get involved and share the burden in order for this annual undertaking of our community succeeds. To ensure we have enough help, we would like to have firm commitments (6 to 8 hours) from as many parishioners as possible for the assignment of various work tasks during the 3 festival days. If you would like to financially support the cost of the festival, please write a check to: Holy Trinity Cathedral and under memo include festival expenses. Please check the stands (work tasks) and the times you would like to help during the festival days, include your name/telephone/ and someone will contact you. A Jewish exile plays a game of riddles in a Persian king s court. Young men and widows becomes martyrs in the face of idolatry. Wisdom is detailed and exalted. Christ is revealed. These and many other stories make up the collection of writings we ll be exploring--- authentic books of the Bible you ve probably never read. Dubbed Apocrypha and cut from the Bible by the Reformers, these books of the Greek Old Testament were a vital part of the Church s life in the early centuries, and are still read and treasured by Orthodox Christians today. This study intends to present a brief and intriguing introduction and discussion of these valuable texts, which St. Athanasius the Great termed the Readables. If you are so inclined, there are several copies of The Rest of the Bible by Theron Mathis at the bookstore in coffee hour. If you have a copy of the Orthodox Study Bible or another bible with the Apocrypha in it, it would be helpful to bring it, though Fr. Mark will have a few copies at the study. Please send Fr. Κλεινει το µουσειο ΚΑΤΗΧΗΤΙΚΟ ΣΧΟΛΕΙΟ Με τις δωρεες που συγκεντρωσαν τα παιδια του Κατηχητικου Σχολειου αγορασαµε µια αγελαδα και κουνελια για τους φτωχους του κοσµου (Χεηφερ προτζεκτ). Τον µηνα Μαρτιο τα παιδια θα παρουν το προτζεκτ της Σαρακοστης. Το Σεµιναριο για τους δασκαλους θα γινει στην εκκλησια µας το Σαββατο 20 Απριλιου. ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΟ ΣΧΟΛΕΙΟ Στις 30 Ιανουαριου το Ελληνικο Σχολειο γιορτασε την εορτη των Τριων Ιεραρχων γιορτη Ελληνικων Γραµµατων.Ευχαριστουµε τον οµιλητη µας Πατερα Κωστα και το Π.Τ.Ο που προσφερε το δειπνο. Το Σαββατο 2 Μαρτιου του Π.Τ.Ο του Ελληνικου Σχολειου εχει διοργανωσει το ετησιο Αποκριατικο Γλεντι µε δειπνο παρελαση κουστουµιων και χορο. Την ευτερα 18 Μαρτιου (Καθαρα ευτερα) το Ελληνικο σχολειο θα προσφερει Νηστησιµο δειπνο µετα τον Αποδειπνο. Ολοι ειστε καλεσµενοι.

Η εποµενη συγκεντρωση θα γινει τηντριτη 5 Μαρτιου µε οµιλητη τον Ιατρο Ντανιελ Γουεµπερ Υπευθυνο του Γυναικολογικου Τµηµατος του Νοσοκοµειου στο Λανκαστερ µε θεµα την συµµετοχη της Ελλαδας στο ευτερο Παγκοσµιο Πολεµο και την ηρωικη προσπαθεια του Αρχιεπισκοπου αµασκηνου στην σωτηρια µεγαλου αριθµου Εβραικου πληθυσµου κατα την του Ολοκαυτωµατος. Την Τεταρτη 3 Απριλιου ο συλλογος θα επισκεφτει το Κολλεγιο Ντικινσον οπου ο Καθηγητης Χριστοφιλης Μαγγιδης Υπευθυνος της Εδρας της Αρχαιολογιας του Κολλεγιου θα τους µιλησει για τα µαρµαρα τουπαρθενωνα και θα τους ξεναγησει στα εργαστηρια της Αρχαιολογιας. Ολοι οι ενοριτες ηλικιας 55 ετων και ανω µπορουν να γινουν µελη του συλλογου επικοινωνειστε µε την Μαιρη Τουλουµη η τον Χρηστο Ζερβανο ΑΓΙΑ ΕΛΙΣΑΒΕΤ Ο συλλογος θα αρχισει τις συναντησεις του την Τεταρτη 23 Ιανουαριου µε την µελετη του βιβλιου Ο Νεαρος Ανδρας,Ο Σεβασµιος Γερο Παισιος.Το βιογραφικο ενοςελληνα νεου και την επιθυµια του να µαθει την αληθεια αρχιζοντας µε γιογκα, υπνοτισµο και αλλους τροπους. Και ξανγυρισε στην Ορθοδοξη πιστη και επισκεφτηκε το Αγιον ορος οπυου γνωρισε τον Γεροντα Παισιο και τον εφερε στην αληθεια του Χριστου. Πιστευοντας οτι βρηκε µερος της αληθειας στο Αγιο Ορος διαλεξε να δωσει την ιδια ευκαιρια και στους γιογκις οπως εδωσε στον Γεροντα Παισιοκαι τους Ορθοδοξους Μοναχους.Σε ηλικια 25 ετων ταξιδεψε στην Ινδια οπυ παρακολουθησε τις διδασκαλιες τριων γκουρου και ενας απο αυτους λατρευονταν σαν θεος. Οι εµπειριες του στην Ινδια και η συναντηση στο Αγιο Ορος περιγραφονται στο βιβλιο.μπορειτε να το βρειτε στο βιβλιοπωλειο της εκκλησιας µας.
