1 JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2014 PUBLICATION DORMITION OF THE VIRGIN MARY GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH 29 Central St., Somerville, MA, Tel.( 617) Fax (617) Web : office@dormitionchurch.org The spiritual meaning of christmas Today's world makes a great effort to impose on us its own forms and patterns, while the Church is in pain, is suffering, to morph Christ in us. We were asked therefore to celebrate Christmas a few days ago, in an atmosphere of Eucharistic devotion, and were invited to look deeper into the mystery of the Incarnation of our Lord. On the night of the Nativity of Christ, the angels appeared and spoke to the world. The Gospel says that one heavenly angel spoke to the shepherds and said «I bring you good tidings of great joy», and then appeared an army of angels chanting «Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace...». The angels chanted God s glory not for themselves, but for us, for the people to join our voices with the angelic praise. When this glory filled the heaven and became the ladder by which the angels were going up and down, only a few shepherds and the Holy Virgin heard this hymn. The rest of the people were sleeping, weighed down by the day s fatigue. But what's important in this doxology of God? Stephen the Protomartyr, just before his martyrdom, saw the heaven opening and exhibiting God s glory, whom he called God of glory. This glory of God is His characteristic idiom that was pre-eternal. As the Apostle Paul says in his epistles, the Father is the Father of glory, and the Son is the radiance of this glory which He has before the ages. God, in His indescribable mercy wanted to convey this glory to His creatures. Herein is found the blissfulness and beatitude of life. This glory is returned to God by all the creatures who receive it. The Cherubim, says the book of Revelation, receive this glory with such zeal, so they have no rest day and night, not because they are not allowed, but because their desire for it is un-satiable and are made whole as an eye, so the light of divine glory can totally penetrate them. As long as man was in Paradise, as St. Paul says, he was an icon of God s glory. However he listened to the evil one s suggestion and tried to appropriate that glory, so that he was deprived of it and died a spiritual death. The God of glory, knowing that without it there is no complete happiness, began to fashion various ways to send it again to the renegade, as we read to the «Hebrews». Thus in His mercy and goodness, He found this omniscient way of humbling Himself and imparting His glory to us. For without it there is neither bliss nor salvation. To us the Orthodox, salvation and glorification are the same. Salvation is to share in the glory of God, the nature of God, as St. Peter says (2 Pet. 1:4). When we become regenerated by the Spirit of God in Christ, we obtain great value and honor as the Apostle Paul says, we become members of Christ's glorious body. So we see that God did for us the greatest miracle, He gave us His Son. This is the meaning of the feast of Christmas, that God offered us His only begotten Son, so that he who believes in the Son will not see death and will live forever. Because he is the Son given to us humans, «for there is born to you a Savior» (Luk. 2:11). If God has done this to us before, won t He also grant the gift of heavenly life to all those who seek first the kingdom of Heaven? Therefore brothers & sisters, give glory to god in the highest!

3 ΤΟ ΝΟΗΜΑ ΤΗΣ ΕΟΡΤΗΣ ΤΩΝ ΧΡΙΣΤΟΥΓΕΝΝΩΝ αγαπητοί εν Χριστώ αδελφοί, Ο σημερινός κόσμος κάνει μεγάλη προσπάθεια να επιβάλλει μέσα μας τις δικές του μορφές και τα πρότυπα, ενώ η Εκκλησία οδίνει, πάσχει δηλαδή, να μορφώσει μέσα μας τον Χριστό. Ετσι όρισε να γιορτάσουμε πριν από λίγες μέρες τα Χριστούγεννα μέσα σε ατμόσφαιρα ευχαριστιακή και κατανυκτική, και μας κάλεσε να εμβαθύνουμε στο μυστήριο της Ενανθρωπήσεως του Κυρίου μας. Την ημέρα της Γεννήσεως του Χριστού εμφανίσθηκαν οι αγγελοι και μίλησαν στον κόσμο. Λέει το Ιερό Ευαγγέλιο ότι ενας Aγγελος παρουσιάσθηκε στους ποιμένες και τους είπε «ευαγγελίζομαι υμίν χαράν μεγάλην», και κατόπιν εμφανίσθηκε στρατιά Aγγέλων που έψαλλαν «δόξα εν υψίστοις θεώ και επί γης ειρήνη...». Οι Aγγελοι έψαλλαν την δόξα όχι γιά τον εαυτό τους αλλά γιά μας τους ανθρώπους, γιά να ενώσουμε και εμείς τη φωνή μας με την αγγελική δοξολογία. Οταν αυτή η δόξα γέμισε τον ουρανό και έγινε κλίμακα γιά να ανεβοκατεβαίνουν οι Aγγελοι, μόνο μερικοί ποιμένες και η Υπεραγία Θεοτόκος άκουγαν αυτόν τον ύμνο. Οι υπόλοιποι άνθρωποι εκοιμούντο, βεβαρημένοι από την κούραση της ημέρας. Αλλά τι σπουδαίο υπάρχει σ αυτή τη δοξολογία του Θεού; Ο Πρωτομάρτυς Στέφανος λίγο πριν το μαρτύριο του είδε ν ανοίγει ο ουρανός και να φαίνεται η δόξα του Θεού, τον οποίο αποκάλεσε Θεόν δόξης. Αυτή η δόξα του Θεού είναι χαρακτηριστικό ιδίωμα Του, που έχει προαιώνια. Οπως λέει ο Απ. Παύλος στην προς Εβραίους (1:3), ο Πατήρ είναι Πατήρ δόξης, και ο Υιός είναι το απαύγασμα της δόξης του Πατρός, και έχει την δόξα αυτή προ της καταβολής του κόσμου. Από απερίγραπτη φιλανθρωπία ο Θεός λοιπόν, ήθελε να μεταδώσει και στα κτίσματα του αυτή τη δόξα. Σ αυτήν βρίσκεται η ευδαιμονία και η μακαριότητα της ζωής. Αυτήν τη δόξα όλα τα κτίσματα που την δέχονται κατόπιν την επιστρέφουν στον Θεό. Τα Χερουβείμ τα οποία όπως λέει το βιβλίο της Αποκαλύψεως, με τέτοιο ζήλο δεν χορταίνουν από αυτή τη δόξα, ώστε δεν έχουν ανάπαυση ημέρα και νύχτα, όχι γιατί δεν τους επιτρέπεται, αλλά γιατί η επιθυμία τους γι αυτήν γίνεται ακόρεστος, γίνονται ολόκληρα σαν ένας οφθαλμός για να τον διαπερνάει το φως της θείας δόξης. Ο άνθρωπος ήταν στον Παράδεισο, όπως λέει ο Παύλος, εικών της δόξης του Θεού. Ο άνθρωπος εκεί ανταποκρίθηκε την προτροπή του πονηρού και θέλησε να σφετερισθεί αυτή τη δόξα, με αποτέλεσμα να την στερηθεί και να πεθάνει πνευματικό θάνατο όταν σταμάτησε να συμμετέχει σ αυτήν. Ο Θεός της δόξης γνωρίζοντας ότι χωρίς αυτην δεν υπάρχει ευδαιμονία, άρχισε να κατεργάζεται ποικίλους τρόπους γιά να την στείλει ξανά στον άνθρωπο, όπως λέει η προς Εβραίους επιστολή. Ετσι μέσα στην φιλανθρωπία και αγαθότητα Του διάλεξε αυτόν τον πάνσοφο τρόπο να ταπεινωθεί γιά να μας μεταδωσει την δόξα Του. Διότι χωρίς αυτήν δεν υπάρχει ούτε ευδαιμονία, ούτε σωτηρία. Σε μας τους Ορθοδόξους η σωτηρία λέγεται και δοξασμός. Σωτηρία είναι η μετοχή στη δόξα του Θεού, στη φύση του Θεού, όπως λέει και ο Απ. Πέτρος. Ετσι κι εμείς όταν αναγεννόμαστε από το Πνεύμα του Θεού αποκτούμε μεγάλη αξία και τιμή, γινόμαστε μέλη του δοξασμένου σώματος του Χριστού. Βλέπουμε λοιπόν ότι ο Θεός έκανε γιά μας το μεγαλύτερο θαύμα, μας χάρισε τον μονογενη Του Υιό. Αυτό είναι το νόημα της εορτής των Χριστουγέννων, ότι ο Θεός μας χάρισε τον μονογενή Του Υιό, ώστε αυτός που πιστεύει στον Υιό να μην δει θάνατο ποτέ αλλά να ζήσει αιώνια, διότι αυτός ο Υιός έχει δοθεί σε μας τους ανθρώπους, «ετέχθη ημίν υιός και ετέχθη σωτήρ». Αφού λοιπόν έκανε αυτό, πως δεν θα κάνει σ αυτούς που αναζητούν πρώτα την βασιλεία του Θεού και αυτό το δώρο, να μας χαρίσει δηλαδή όλο τον πλούτο της ουράνιας ζωής; δοξάσατε λοιπόν αδελφοί τον εν υψιστοισ θεον εις τον αιώνα!

4 My dearest parishioners, I hope you have all enjoyed the holy day of Christmas with your families and friends and I wish you a very healthy, prosperous, and successful year for you and your families. We have just completed a very active, productive, and historic year for our church and community. We had many successful events and tremendously productive festival, but the masterpiece was the arrival and unveiling of the Axion Estin icon. We were blessed to bring the icon into our church to lead, help, heal, and guide us and our community for generations to come. It was a great spiritual event, the vespers service was magnificent and the whole ceremony was highly emotional and uplifting. The reception was well organized and all faithful, parishioners and guests enjoyed. It was a reception very worthy of the icon we unveiled that evening. I would like to express my sincere appreciation and heartfelt thanks to Father Konstantinos and Presbytera Anna, the masterminds of this vision. Thank you all who contributed financially and gave your talent and hard work for the completion of this goal. Special thanks to Bill Galatis and James and Ifigenia Boulogiane, whose initial donations secured the arrival of the Axion Estin icon to our church. I would like to congratulate and thank Evelyn Galatis, the chairperson of the 100 th anniversary committee and every one of its members, for an amazing job. Thank you to our chef, Tashi and our cooks Phill, Paul, Joanne, Peter, and Ted for an outstanding performance with the food served. Thank you to the Philoptochos ladies for making over a 1000 tasty vegan pastries. Thank you to the altar boys and G.O.Y.A.ns for cutting and bagging the bread given to all guests. Thank you to our chanters. Special thanks to every parish council member who embraced the idea from A NOTE FROM OUR PARISH COUNCIL PRESIDENT the beginning and worked hard to make it a reality. I highly appreciate the sacrifices you make, taking valuable time from your family and jobs to help make decisions and run the activities of our church. I m very grateful and appreciate it immensely. Thank you, Cookie for the countless hours you spend at the church doing all the odd jobs at odd times. Thank you, Andy for assisting the selection of the proskynitari, for helping in many areas and being always willing to help. Thank you, Carol for a great job establishing outstanding standards in recording parish council minutes and helping in many functions. Thank you, Diane for helping in every function, all coffee hours, spending many hours decorating, and great job with the Koinotis. Thank you, Nick B. for preparing the area for the icon and the great contributions beautifying and maintaining our church and buildings. Thank you, Nick S. for your enthusiasm. Thank you, Niko for helping in many functions and being always willing to help. Thank you, Kosta for being very reliable and always available. Thank you, Paul for your help in many functions and being always willing to help. Thank you, Phill for a great job with the Axion Estin reception. Thank you, Guy for your generosity and help in many functions. Thank you, Peter for all the help you give even on short notice. Thank you, Taso for undertaking a difficult and demanding job in the middle of the year. Thank you, Teddy for handling our busy hall rental business and trying and solving as many problems as you can. Thank you all, you make my job easier. At the last general assembly, a motion was passed unanimously to increase the dues/stewardship by $100 starting in The new dues are $350 for families, $250 for individuals and $200 for the golden aged individuals. This was very eminent, as we have not increased the dues for many years and we have the lowest dues of the surrounding churches. Our operating expenses are constantly increasing every year, and some of them significantly. As we enter the New Year, our church is facing more challenges in both the parish development area and the capital development area. The newly created strategic planning ministry will try to make decisions and improvements in both areas. Some of the goals for 2014 will be to continue building excitement for our 100 year anniversary, and undertake the following projects: Establish a soup kitchen in our church, replace our Stone Age heating system with a 21 st century one, renovate our upper hall and kitchen and hopefully fix the windows. All these require good planning, plenty of financial resources, commitment, and a lot of hard work. I am encouraging all of you to join at least one ministry, the one you feel is closer to your interests and talent. I would like to thank the outgoing parish council members, Niko Sfikas and Nick Sfikas, for their contributions in the last two years. I would also like to welcome our new parish council members, Danny Kourafalos and Stelios Sfikas. We had no elections since we had eight candidates for eight open positions. Happy New Year to all of you, I highly appreciate the sacrifices you make, taking valuable time from your family and jobs to help make decisions and run the activities of our church. 5 ΚΑΙ ΣΤΑ ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΑ... Πολυαγαπημένοι ενορίτες μου, Ελπίζω να έχετε απολαύσει τις ιερές ημέρες των Χριστουγέννων με τις οικογένειες και τους φίλους σας. Σας εύχομαι μια πολύ υγιή, ευημερούσα και επιτυχημένη χρονιά για εσάς και τις οικογένειές σας. Έχουμε μόλις ολοκληρώσει ένα πολύ ενεργό, παραγωγικό και ιστορικό έτος για την εκκλησία και την κοινότητά μας. Είχαμε πολλές επιτυχημένες εκδηλώσεις και ένα εξαιρετικά αποδοτικό φεστιβάλ, αλλά το αριστούργημα ήταν η άφιξη και τα αποκαλυπτήρια της εικόνας του Άξιον Εστίν. Ήμαστε ευλογημένοι που φέραμε την εικόνα στην εκκλησία μας για να μας βοηθάει, να θεραπεύει, και να καθοδηγεί εμάς και την κοινότητά μας για τις επόμενες γενιές. Ήταν ένα μεγάλο πνευματικό γεγονός, ο εσπερινός ήταν μέγας και η όλη τελετή ήταν πολύ συναισθηματική και εξυψωμένη. Η υποδοχή ήταν καλά οργανωμένη και όλοι οι πιστοί, οι ενορίτες και οι επισκέπτες την απόλαυσαν. Ήταν μια υποδοχή πολύ άξια της εικόνας που αποκαλύφθηκε εκείνο το βράδυ. Θα ήθελα να εκφράσω την ειλικρινή εκτίμησή μου και τις εγκάρδιες ευχαριστίες μου προς τον π.κωνσταντίνο και την πρεσβυτέρα Άννα, τους εγκέφαλους αυτού του οράματος. Σας ευχαριστώ όλους που συμβάλατε οικονομικά και προσφέρατε το ταλέντο σας και τη σκληρή δουλειά σας για την ολοκλήρωση αυτoύ του στόχου. Ιδιαίτερες ευχαριστίες στον Bill Γαλάτη και τους Δημήτρη και Ιφιγένεια Boulogiane, των οποίων η αρχική δωρεά εξασφάλισε την άφιξη της εικόνας Άξιον Εστίν στην εκκλησία μας. Θα ήθελα να συγχαρώ και να ευχαριστήσω την Evelyn Γαλάτη, την πρόεδρο της επιτροπής εορτασμού της 100ης επετείου και κάθε ένα από τα μέλη της, για μια καταπληκτική δουλειά. Ευχαριστώ τον αρχιμάγειρα μας Τάσι, και τους μάγειρες μας Phill, Paul, Joanne, Πέτρο και Θεόδωρο για την εξαιρετική απόδοση με το φαγητό που προσφέρθηκε. Ευχαριστώ τις κυρίες της Φιλοπτώχου για την παρασκευή πάνω από 1000 νόστιμων νηστήσιμων γλυκών. Ευχαριστώ τους ιερόπαιδες και τους GOYAns για την κοπή και τοποθέτηση σε σάκους του Αρτου που δόθηκε σε όλους τους επισκέπτες. Ευχαριστώ τους ψάλτες μας. Ιδιαίτερες ευχαριστίες σε κάθε μέλος του ενοριακού συμβουλίου, που αγκάλιασε την ιδέα από την αρχή και εργάστηκε σκληρά για να γίνει πραγματικότητα. Εκτιμώ ιδιαίτερα τις θυσίες που κάνετε, καταναλώνοντας πολύτιμο χρόνο από την οικογένεια και τις δουλειές σας για να βοηθήσετε στην λήψη αποφάσεων και να τρέξετε τις δραστηριότητες της εκκλησίας μας. Είμαι πολύ ευγνώμων και το εκτιμώ πάρα πολύ. Ευχαριστώ Cookie για τις αμέτρητες ώρες που ξοδεύεις στην εκκλησία να κάνει όλες τις δουλειές και με πολλές συνεχόμενες ώρες. Ευχαριστώ, Aνδρέα για την βοήθεια στην επιλογή του προσκυνηταριού, την βοήθεια σε πολλές εκδηλώσεις και πάντα πρόθυμος να βοηθήσης. Ευχαριστώ, την Κάρολ για την καταπληκτική δουλειά στην καταγραφή των πρακτικών των συνεδριάσεων του ενοριακού συμβουλίου και την βοήθεια σε πολλές εκδηλώσεις. Ευχαριστώ, Diane (Δήμητρα) για την παροχή βοήθειας σε κάθε εκδηλώση, όλες τις ώρες του καφέ, περνώντας πολλές ώρες διακοσμόντας και για την σπουδαία δουλειά με το Κοινότης. Ευχαριστώ, Θόδωρε για το χειρισμό της ενοικίασης της αίθουσας μας και τις προσπάθειές σου για την επίλυση οσων περισσοτέρων προβλημάτων μπορείς. Σας ευχαριστώ όλους, κάνετε τη δουλειά μου πιο εύκολη. Κατά την τελευταία γενική συνέλευση, ψηφίστηκε ομόφωνα η πρόταση για την αύξηση της εισφοράς κατά $100 από το Τα νέα τέλη είναι $ 350 οι οικογένειες, $ 250 για τους ανύπανδρους και $200 για τα άτομα της χρυσής ηλικίας. Η απόφαση ήταν πολύ εύλογη, καθώς δεν έχουμε αυξήσει τα τέλη για πολλά χρόνια και έχουμε τα χαμηλότερα τέλη από τις γύρω εκκλησίες.ενώ αντίθετα τα λειτουργικά μας έξοδα συνεχώς αυξάνονται κάθε χρόνο, και κάποια από αυτά σημαντικά. Καθώς μπαίνουμε στο νέο έτος, η Εκκλησία μας αντιμετωπίζει περισσότερες προκλήσεις, τόσο στη ανάπτυξη της ενορίας οσο και στην ανάπτυξη των κεφαλαίων συντήρησης. Η νεοσύστατη διακονία στρατηγικού σχεδιασμού θα προσπαθήσει να πάρει αποφάσεις και να βελτιώσει και τις δύο περιοχές. Μερικοί από τους στόχους μας για το 2014 θα είναι να προκαλέσουμε την αναθέρμανση του ενθουσιασμού για τον εορτασμό των 100 χρόνων μας, και να αναλάβουμε τα ακόλουθα έργα: Δημιουργία ενός συσσίτιου απόρων στην εκκλησία μας, αντικατάσταση του συστήματος θέρμανσης της Λίθινης Εποχής με ένα του 21 ου αιώνα, ανακαίνιση της άνω αίθουσας και της κουζίνα μας και, ελπίζουμε να φτιάξουμε τα παράθυρα. Όλα αυτά απαιτούν καλό σχεδιασμό, αφθονία οικονομικών πόρων, δέσμευση όλων και πολλή σκληρή δουλειά. Σας ενθαρρύνω όλους να συμμετάσχεστε σε μια τουλάχιστον διακονία, αυτή που αισθάνεστε ότι είναι πιο κοντά στα ενδιαφέροντα σας και το ταλέντο σας. Θα ήθελα να ευχαριστήσω τα απερχόμενα μέλη του ενοριακού συμβουλίου, Niko Σφήκα και Nick Σφήκα, για τη συμβολή τους κατά τα τελευταία δύο χρόνια. Θα ήθελα επίσης να καλωσορίσω τα νέα μέλη του ενοριακού συμβουλίου μας, Διονύσιο Kouράφαλο και Στέλιο Σφήκα. Δεν είχαμε εκλογές, καθώς είχαμε οκτώ υποψήφιους για οκτώ ανοικτές θέσεις. 10 Donations For Axion Estin Icon Without the donations of our beloved Parishioners, Family & Friends, it would not have been made possible to bring this miraculous icon into our Dormition Church. All donations received from August 1, 2013, through December 31, 2013 are reflected in this Koinotis. All other donations will be included in the next issue. 12 The PTO Committee hopes that everyone had a very Merry Christmas. Let us rejoice in the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We wish all those whose name days were celebrated on December 25 a happy name day. The PTO Committee would like to commend Father Konstantinos, the Parish Council and the 100 th Anniversary Committee for organizing and providing a spectacular weekend for His Eminence, all the visiting priests, chanters, dignitaries, and over 700 attendees during the unveiling and blessing of the Axion Estin Icon last November. We also commend the vision, efforts and donations by Father and all the parishioners who gave freely of themselves to bring the only replica of the Axion Estin Icon to the USA. Afterwards, on December 7, 2013, at 11 a.m. our youth ministries decorated the Christmas tree and the upper hall. We congratulate them on a splendid job. On December 9, 2013, Father Konstantinos, our Greek school teachers, and students sang Christmas carols at the Somerville Community Access Channel (SCATV). The carols sung in English and Greek, were recorded live in their studio and broadcast on TV-3 in Somerville and on YouTube throughout December. We thank the director and staff at SCATV for inviting us to attend their studio and celebrating the diversity in Somerville. On December 21, 2013, the Greek and Sunday school children, teachers and parents visited 7 different businesses in Somerville to spread the Christmas cheer in Greek and English. 2 out of the 7 businesses were nursing homes, the Somerville Home and the Jean Jugan Residence. The senior citizens were thrilled to hear the angelic voices of our children as they sang their Christmas carols. Our children in Sunday school made beautiful Christmas cards which were given to our local seniors to brighten their days. All donations collected by the children from various donors will be donated to the Somerville Homeless Coalition. We are grateful and appreciative to all of the local businesses, Stop & Shop, Market Basket, Mr. James Contos of McKinnon s Meat Market, Mr. and Mrs. Chris Lianos of Ball Sq. Fine Wines & Liquor and Daddy Jones Restaurant and Bar, which welcomed our children and offered donations. We also wish to thank Mr. Nick Boulas and Ms. Diane Karavitis for arranging a complimentary shuttle bus provided by the Cambridge Health Alliance which transported us all on our caroling tour. On December 22, 2013, the Greek School children recited their beautiful Christmas poems and songs. At the conclusion of their event, the children were visited by a special guest from the North Pole. The annual Dormition Christmas Pageant was held on December 24, 2013 after the Vesper service. Many parents and children participated. We thank Mrs. Ourania, Mrs. Raschi, Mrs. Sfikas, Mrs. Stefanou, and Mrs. Ververis for assisting with the practices and the pageant. Later on December 28, 2013, over 36 parishioners traveled to Forest Park in Springfield, MA to see the annual Bright Nights exhibit. The light displays were amazing. All the adults and children had a wonderful time singing Christmas carols and sipping hot chocolate while on the bus together as a parish traveling along the Pike. It was easy to see why for the 7th time this exhibit was selected by the American Bus Association as one of the Top 100 Destinations in North America. After the exhibit, all participants enjoyed a wonderful 3 course meal at the Zagat rated Bella Costa Restaurant in Framingham, MA. On December 29, 2013, the PTO held their annual communion breakfast in the upper hall which was enjoyed by everyone. The delicious egg nog ran out very quickly this year. Thank you to all the parents who volunteered and donated their time and talent towards the preparation, and completion of all the successful PTO events mentioned above. This Saturday, January 18, 2014, at 8:00 a.m. we will travel to and visit our Hellenic Nursing Home and the Hellenic Women s Benevolent Association (HWBA) representatives in Canton, MA. We hope that you will join us as we will celebrate the Divine Liturgy with Father Gregory, Father Konstantinos and many of our beloved Orthodox senior residents. We are trying to arrange for another complimentary shuttle bus. If we cannot obtain one, then we recommend that parishioners carpool directly from Church at 8:00 a.m. to the home with an estimated return time of 1:00 p.m. Please be considerate and volunteer to provide transportation for our Dormition brothers and sisters in Christ if you are able to do so and if it will ultimately be necessary. 13 Η επιτροπή του ΠTO ελπίζει ότι ο καθένας σας πέρασε χαρούμενα και Καλά Χριστούγεννα. Ας χαρούμε τη γέννηση του Κυρίου και Σωτήρος ημών Ιησού Χριστού. Ευχόμαστε σε όλους εκείνους των οποίων η ονομαστική εορτή ήταν στις 25 Δεκεμβρίου, Χρόνια Πολλά. Η Επιτροπή του ΠTO θα ήθελε να συγχαρεί τον Πατέρα Κωνσταντίνο, το Ενοριακό Συμβούλιο και την επιτροπή εορτασμού της 100ης επετείου για την οργάνωση και την διεξαγωγή ενός φαντασμαγορικού Σαββατοκύριακου για τον Σεβασμιώτατο, όλους τους επισκέπτας ιερείς, ψάλτες, επισήμους, και πάνω από 700 συμμετέχοντες κατά τα αποκαλυπτήρια και την ευλόγηση της εικόνας του Άξιον Εστιν τον περασμένο Νοέμβριο. Επαινούμε επίσης το όραμα, τις προσπάθειες και τις δωρεές από τον Ιερέα και όλους τους ενορίτες που πρόσφεραν γενναιόδωρα για να φέρουμε το μόνο αντίγραφο της εικόνας του Άξιον Εστίν στις ΗΠΑ. Θέλουμε να ευχαριστήσουμε τον διευθυντή και το προσωπικό του SCATV που μας προσκάλεσαν στον σταθμό τους γιά να γιορτάσουμε την ανάδειξη της ποικιλομορφίας του Somerville. Στις 21 Δεκεμβρίου του 2013, τα παιδιά του Ελληνικού και του Κατηχητικού σχολείου, οι δασκάλες και οι γονείς, επισκέφθηκαν 7 διαφορετικές επιχειρήσεις στο Somerville για να μεταδώσουν την χαρά των Χριστουγέννων στα ελληνικά και αγγλικά. Δύο από τις 7 επιχειρήσεις ήταν γηροκομεία, το Somerville Home και το Jean Jugan Residence. Τα άτομα της τρίτης ηλικίας ενθουσιάστηκαν που άκουσαν τις αγγελικές φωνές των παιδιών μας που τους τραγούδησαν τα κάλαντα. Τα παιδιά του Κατηχητικού Σχολείου έκαναν χριστουγεννιάτικες κάρτες που μοιράστηκαν στούς ηλικιωμένους και λάμπρυναν την ημέρα τους. Όλες οι δωρεές που συλλέχθηκαν από τα παιδιά από διάφορους δωρητές θα διατεθούν στο Somerville Homeless Coalition. Είμαστε ευγνώμονες και επαινούμε όλες τις τοπικές επιχειρήσεις, το Stop & Shop, το Market Basket, τον κ. James ΚΟΝΤΟΣ του Meat Market McKinnon, τον κ. και κα Chris Λιανός του Ball Sq. Fine Wines & Liquor και το Daddy Jones Restaurant and Bar, οι οποίες εξέφρασαν την ικανοποίηση τους και πρόσφεραν δωρεές στα παιδιά μας. Θα θέλαμε επίσης να ευχαριστήσουμε τον κ. Nick Μπούλα και την διδα Δήμητρα Καραβίτη που οργάνωσαν την δωρεάν μεταφορά με λεωφορείο, προσφορά του Cambridge Health Alliance. Την 22α Δεκεμβρίου του 2013, τα παιδιά του Ελληνικού μας Σχολείου απήγγειλαν όμορφα ποιήματα και τραγούδια των Χριστουγέννων. Μετά το πέρας της εκδήλωσης, τα παιδιά επισκέφθηκε ειδικός προσκεκλημένος από τον Βόρειο Πόλο. Η ετήσια Χριστουγεννιάτικη παράσταση πραγματοποιήθηκε στις 24 Δεκέμβρη του 2013, μετά την Θεία Λειτουργία. Συμμετείχαν πολλοί γονείς και παιδιά. Θέλουμε να ευχαριστήσουμε την κα Ουρανία, την κα Raschi, την κα Σφήκα, την κα Στεφάνου και την κα Βερβέρης για την βοήθεια τους κατά τις πρόβες και την παράσταση. Αργότερα, στις 28 Δεκεμβρίου, πάνω από 36 ενορίτες ταξίδεψαν στο Forest Park στο Springfield, Μασαχουσέτης για να απολαύσουν το ετήσιο θέαμα των Φωτεινών Νυχτών. Οι φωτεινές παρουσιάσεις ήταν καταπληκτικές. Όλοι οι ενήλικες και τα παιδιά πέρασαν μια υπέροχη βραδιά τραγουδώντας τα κάλαντα και πίνοντας ζεστή σοκολάτα, καθώς μαζί σαν μια κοινότητα ταξίδευαν κατά μήκος του Mass Pike. Ήταν εύκολο να καταλάβει κανείς γιατί για 7η φορά η έκθεση αυτή επιλέχθηκε από την Αμερικανική Ενωση Λεωφορείων σαν ένας από τους 100 καλύτερους προορισμούς στη Βόρεια Αμερική. Μετά την έκθεση, όλοι οι συμμετέχοντες απήλαυσαν ένα υπέροχο γεύμα 3 πιάτων στο Bella Costa Restaurant στο Framingham της Μασσαχουσσέτης. Στις 29 Δεκεμβρίου του 2013, το ΠTO πραγματοποίησε το ετήσιο κοινοτικό πρωινό που απήλαυσαν όλοι στην κοινοτική αίθουσα. Το νόστιμο egg nog εξαντλήθηκε πολύ γρήγορα φέτοςτο. Ενα ευχαριστώ σε όλους τους γονείς που εθελοντικά έδωσαν το χρόνο και το ταλέντο τους για την προετοιμασία και την ολοκλήρωση όλων των επιτυχημένων εκδηλώσεων του ΠTO που αναφέρονται παραπάνω. Το Σάββατο 18 Ιανουαρίου, 2014, στις 8:00 π.μ., θα ταξιδέψουμε και θα επισκεφθούμε το Ελληνικό Γηροκομείο μας και τον Ελληνικό Φιλανθρωπικό Σύλλογο Γυναικών (HWBA) στο Canton, MA. Ελπίζουμε ότι θα έλθετε μαζί μας για να γιορτάσουμε την Θεία Λειτουργία με τον π. Γρηγόριο, τον π. Κωνσταντίνο και πολλούς αγαπημένους μας Ορθόδοξους ηλικιωμένους τροφίμους. Προσπαθούμε να οργανώσουμε ακόμα μια δωρεάν μεταφορά με λεωφορείο. Αν δεν μπορέσουμε να εξασφαλισουμε ένα, τότε σας συνιστούμε να μαζευθείτε γιά carpool με αναχώρηση από την εκκλησία στις 8:00 π.μ. γιά το Γηροκομείο, και με εκτιμώμενο χρόνο επιστροφής στις 13:00μμ. 14 Greetings from the GOYA! The GOYA continues to be an active group. At the vespers service unveiling the Axion Estin icon, our teens were responsible for cutting and bagging the 25 -plus loaves of artos. The GOYAns divided roles and worked together to get this huge task done quickly and smoothly, and the artos was delivered on time for Fr. Konstantinos to give out to the 400-plus faithful that night. On Saturday, December 7, 2013, the GOYAns gathered to decorate the upper hall and trim the Christmas tree. It was a full afternoon with a prosforo-baking workshop led by Presvytera Anna, upper hall and Christmas tree decorating party, and potluck Lenten lunch. We hope you like the decorations; we sure had fun putting them up for you! As Advisors, we are excited and thankful to the GOYAns and you, the parents and families, for supporting them, bringing them, and encouraging them to be involved. We recognize that our teens have a lot of commitments tugging at their time and are thankful that you all make the GOYA a priority. Some activities coming up are visiting the Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church in Allston to learn how they run their Open Door Free Meal Program, spending a retreat weekend at the Metropolis camp, learning from a Teaching Liturgy, and making more foods that we use in church services. This year we want to learn how to make prosforo, kolyva, and artos. Thank you again for your support and encouragement! 16 As we wrap up 2013, the 100 th Anniversary Committee has much to be thankful for. The completion of our Mission Statement, our new 100 th website, officers assuming their duties, a logo voted on, a successful Plant Sale, and hosting of the festivities for the Axion Estin Celebration Weekend. The 100 th Anniversary Committee wishes to thank Father Manetas, President Vangeli Kechris, the Parish Council, and all the Committees of the Church who donated to and supported the Axion Estin Celebrations. We truly appreciate all the help we received, which made the event a success. I also commend the 100 th Committee for their foresight, hard work, and professionalism as they worked through the months to execute the appointed plans. What is exciting for us is to have a DVD rendition of the event that chronicles each step of the welcoming of Panagia s Axion Estin Icon. Evelyn Galatis, Chair Όπως έχουμε ολοκληρώσει το 2013, η Επιτροπή Εορτασμού της 100ης επετείου έχει πολλά γιά να είναι ευγνώμων. Η ολοκλήρωση της δήλωσης αποστολής μας, η νέα μας ιστοσελίδα, την ανάληψη των καθηκόντων απο τους αξιωματούχους, ένα λογότυπο σε ψηφοφορία, μια επιτυχημένη πώληση φυτών, καθώς και τη φιλοξενία των εκδηλώσεων για το Σαββατοκύριακο των αποκαλυπτηρίων της Εικονας του Άξιον Εστίν. Η Επιτροπή της 100ης επετείου επιθυμεί να ευχαριστήσει τον Πατέρα Μανέτα, τον Πρόεδρο Βαγγέλη Κεχρή, το Ενοριακό Συμβούλιο, καθώς και όλες τις διακονίες της Εκκλησίας, οι οποίες δώρισαν και υποστήριξαν τον εορτασμόν του Άξιον Εστίν. Εκτιμούμε πραγματικά όλη τη βοήθεια που λάβαμε, η οποία έκανε την εκδήλωση με επιτυχία. Θα ήθελα επίσης να συγχαρώ την Επιτροπή 100 χρόνων για τη διορατικότητά τους, τη σκληρή δουλειά και τον επαγγελματισμό καθώς εργάσθηκαν μήνες για την εκτέλεση των διοριζομένων σχεδίων. Αυτό που είναι συναρπαστικό για εμάς είναι να έχουμε ένα DVD απόδοσης της εκδήλωσης που εξιστορεί κάθε βήμα της υποδοχής της Εικόνας της Παναγίας του Άξιον Εστίν. Ελπίζουμε να έχετε εξασφαλίσει το αντίγραφό σας για να το απολαύσετε βλέποντας και μοιράζοντας τις νέες αναμνήσεις της ζωή της ιστορικής Εκκλησίας μας με την οικογένεια και τους φίλους σας. Αν δεν το έχετε ήδη κάνει, ποτέ δεν είναι αργά, για να πάτε στο κάντε κλικ στο " 100η επέτειο " και μετακινηθείτε προς τα κάτω στη σελίδα για να παραγγείλετε το δικό σας αντίγραφο. Έχουμε θέσει τις βάσεις και υπάρχουν άνθρωποι έτοιμοι να εργαστούν για την Επιτροπή του Album. Το μόνο που χρειαζόμαστε είναι ένα πρόεδρο ή δύο συμπροέδρους να αναλάβουν την ευθύνη. 17 Ingredients - Υλικά 1 Box of Phyllo Dough - 1 πακέτο φύλλο POTATO PIE WITH VEGETABLES Πατατόπιτα με Λαχανικά (18-20 pieces κομμάτια) 5 or 6 medium-sized boiled potatoes μέτριες βρασμένες πατάτες 2 medium grated zucchinis - 2 μέτρια τριμμένα κολοκυθάκια 2-3 green finely chopped peppers πιπεριές ψιλοκομμένες 6-8 fresh finely chopped scallions φρέσκα κρεμμυδάκια ψιλοκομμένα 1 large seedless tomato finely chopped - 1 μεγάλη ντομάτα ψιλοκομμένη χωρίς τα σπόρια 1 cup finely chopped dill - 1 φλιτζάνι άνηθο ψιλοκομμένο 1 cup finely chopped fennel - 1 φλιτζάνι μάραθο ψιλοκομμένο 1/8 cup of oil - 1/8 φλιτζάνι λάδι Salt, pepper & oregano - Αλάτι, πιπέρι και ρίγανη Instructions Οδηγίες Add oil to the pot, add the finely chopped scallions with the peppers and stir until tender. Then add the grated zucchini and stir until lightly golden brown. Finely dice the boiled potatoes and add to the pot and stir until all vegetables are mixed together. Add the tomato, dill and fennel. Lastly, add the salt, pepper and oregano to your taste. Grease pan and line it with 1/2 the box of phyllo dough. Brush lightly each phyllo with olive oil and then add evenly in pan the mixture. Top off the rest of the phyllo in the same manner as the bottom half. Cut it into pieces and bake for 40 minutes at 180 degrees. ENJOY!! Βάζουμε στην κατσαρόλα λάδι, ρίχνουμε τα ψιλοκομμένα φρέσκα κρεμμυδάκια μαζί με τις πιπεριές και ανακατεύουμε μέχρι να μαραθούν. Κατόπιν ρίχνουμε τα τριμμένα κολοκύθια (στον χοντρό τρίφτη) κι ανακατεύουμε να τσιγαριστούν κι αυτά λιγάκι. Τρίβουμε τις πατάτες στον χοντρό τρίφτη και τις ρίχνουμε κι αυτές στην κατσαρόλα. Ανακατεύουμε καλά να περάσει το λάδι σε όλο μας το μείγμα. Στη συνέχεια ρίχνουμε και την ντομάτα, τον άνηθο και τον μάραθο (αν έχουμε, δίνει ωραίο άρωμα). Τέλος προσθέτουμε αλάτι, πιπέρι και μπόλικη ρίγανη. Λαδώνουμε το ταψί, απλώνουμε τα μισά φύλλα βάζοντας ανάμεσά τους λίγο λάδι, ρίχνουμε την γέμιση και από πάνω βάζουμε τα υπόλοιπα φύλλα με τον ίδιο τρόπο. Χαράζουμε και ψήνουμε για 40 περίπου λεπτά στους 180 βαθμούς.
