Ανάγνωσμα: Τιτ. 3,8-15 Παιδί μου Τίτε, αυτά τα λόγια είναι αξιόπιστα και θέλω να τα βεβαιώνεις με την προσωπική σου μαρτυρία, ώστε όσοι έχουν πιστέψει στο Θεό να φροντίζουν να πρωτοστατούν σε καλά έργα. Αυτά είναι τα καλά και τα χρήσιμα στους ανθρώπους. Από το άλλο μέρος, να αποφεύγεις τις ανόητες αναζητήσεις σε γενεαλογικούς καταλόγους, τις φιλονικίες και τις διαμάχες γύρω από τις διατάξεις του ιουδαϊκού νόμου, γιατί όλα αυτά είναι ανώφελα και μάταια. Τον άνθρωπο που ακολουθεί πλανερές διδασκαλίες συμβούλεψέ τον μια δυο φορές, κι αν δεν ακούσει άφησέ τον, με τη βεβαιότητα πως αυτός έχει πια διαστραφεί και αμαρτάνει, καταδικάζοντας έτσι ο ίδιος τον εαυτό του. Όταν θα σου στείλω τον Αρτεμά ή τον Τυχικό, έλα το συντομότερο να με συναντήσεις στη Νικόπολη, γιατί εκεί αποφάσισα να περάσω το χειμώνα. Τον Ζηνά το νομικό και τον Απολλώ, να τους εφοδιάσεις πλουσιοπάροχα με ότι χρειάζονται για το ταξίδι τους, ώστε να μην τους λείψει τίποτα. Ας μαθαίνουν και οι δικοί μας να πρωτοστατούν σε καλά έργα, για ν αντιμετωπίζουν τις επείγουσες υλικές ανάγκες, ώστε η ζωή τους να μην είναι άκαρπη. Σε χαιρετούν όλοι όσοι είναι μαζί μου. I desire you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to apply themselves to good deeds; these are excellent and profitable to men. But avoid stupid controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels over the law, for they are unprofitable and futile. As for a man who is factious, after admonishing him once or twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is perverted and sinful; he is self-condemned. When I send Artemas or Tychicos to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. Do your best to speed Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way; see that they lack nothing. And let our people learn to apply themselves to good deeds, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not to be unfruitful. All who are with me send greeting to you. Οι άνθρωποι, όταν ανάψουν το λυχνάρι, δεν το βάζουν κάτω από το δοχείο με το οποίο μετρούν το σιτάρι, αλλά το τοποθετούν στον λυχνοστάτη, για να φωτίζει όλους τους ανθρώπους του σπιτιού. Έτσι να λάμψει και το δικό σας φως μπροστά στους ανθρώπους, για να δουν τα καλά σας έργα και να δοξολογήσουν τον ουράνιο Πατέρα σας. Μη νομίσετε πως ήρθα για να καταργήσω τον νόμο ή τους προφήτες. 6 6 Agia Markella of Chios July 22nd Saint Markella was born and lived in Volissos, Chios, Greece. She was raised as a Christian by her mother. However, her father was a pagan. Markella lived during the fourteenth century. Her mother was a devout Christian but her father was an idolater. At a young age, her mother died and Markella continued to study her Bible, pray to God and live a life according to what she was taught. Around the time of her eighteenth birthday, Markella's father forced her very hard to be an idolater. Afraid of her father, Saint Markella fled to nearby mountains and hid in a bush. Her father found her with the help of a local herdsmen, and they set fire to the bush to force her to show. Markella ran to the sea to escape but her father aimed an arrow at her and wounded her. The blood of the saint dyed the rocks and to this very day, during the festivities for her feast day, at a specific time, her blood becomes visible on these rocks for all the faithful who bear witness to this miracle. As she was injured, she prayed to Jesus to hide her. A rock opened and she was able to hide all of her body inside, but not her head. Her father decapitated her and threw the head into the sea. Her final moments were spent in prayer to Christ with a request that the rocks would open for her to hide from her father and this happened. Everything but her head was covered so when her father found her, he cut off her head and threw it into the sea. Her head floated to the nearby beach of Komi. For many years, the locals could not locate the head until one day an Italian Naval ship was in the area. In the evening, they could see a bright light coming from the distance and when they got closer they witnessed a head, floating in the water, lit by upright floating candles. Immediately, they realized that this was a sacred miracle they were witness to and they took the head of the Saint back to their homeland. Holy water is said to spring from the rocks that mark her martyrdom. Many pilgrims visit this location and every year on 22 July, during the commemoration services for the Saint, the holy sea water in the rock pool boils during the entire Paraklisis Service; this phenomenon only occurs in the presence of a priest. If a pilgrim's faith is strong, a local tradition is that the water in the rock-pool will feel extremely warm to touch. SAVE THE DATE! 7 Call for Volunteers! Have you worked in a business office? Have you operated your own business? St. George needs you! Beginning with the new ecclesiastic year, we will have an improved system to greet visitors to the office and church and accommodate them. We will have a reception area in the Kontos Event Center lobby to help people schedule events, appointments, fill out forms, get information about the church and ministries, and we will also provide access to the church upon request for prayer, tours, or bookstore shopping. Please volunteer for an area which interests you and in which you are skilled. The schedule will be flexible. We will have 2 hour and 4 hour shifts available. Please contact Tina Wilson at to choose your preferred time. The goal is to have volunteer training in mid August and have volunteers in place shortly after that. Your church really needs you to contribute your talent. Whenever, you give time and talent, the church saves money and makes you a valued steward of St. George. 8 Η ευαγγελική περικοπή είναι παρμένη από την επί του Όρους Ομιλία, όπου ο Κύριος απευθυνόμενος προς τους μαθητές του τους απεκάλεσε παραβολικά «φως του κόσμου» γιατί έχουν στην καρδιά τους τη Χάρη του Τριαδικού Θεού. Ο Ιησούς Χριστός για να τονίσει πόσο σημαντικό είναι το φως στη ζωή των ανθρώπων μας αναφέρει το λυχνάρι που για να δώσει το φως του σε όλο το σπίτι τοποθετείται σε λυχνοστάτη και δεν κρύβεται. Αν αναλογιστούμε πόσο σημαντικό είναι το φως στη ζωή μας σήμερα, μόνο έτσι θα καταλάβουμε τη βαρύτητα που έχει ο λόγος του Κυρίου που καλεί τους Μαθητές του να γίνουν το φως του κόσμου. Μέσα στην Αγία Γραφή υπάρχει έντονη η παρουσία του φωτός, ιδίως σε μεγάλα γεγονότα. Κατά πρώτο λόγο στη δημιουργία του κόσμου «και είπεν ο Θεός γενηθήτω φως και εγένετο φως». Το φως έδωσε την ορατότητα της θείας δημιουργίας και καθόρισε τον ημερήσιο κύκλο και τη διαδοχή της ημέρας και της νύχτας. Επίσης φως έχουμε κατά την παράδοση των Δέκα Εντολών στο Μωυσή. Εκεί το όρος Σινά καλύφθηκε από τη νεφέλη και το φως σημαίνοντας την παρουσία του Θεού. Κατά τη Γέννηση του Ιησού Χριστού ο Αστέρας φωτίζει το Σπήλαιο της Βηθλεέμ και διαλαλεί την έλευση του Ιησού. Κατά τη μεταμόρφωση, το πρόσωπο του Ιησού Χριστού έλαμψε όπως ο ήλιος και τα ρούχα του έγιναν λευκά όπως το χιόνι, ένδειξη και πάλιν της θεϊκής δύναμης. Ακόμα σε πολλές περιπτώσεις ο Ιησούς Χριστός παρομοίασε τον εαυτό του με το φως: «Εγώ ειμί το Φως του κόσμου». Το φως κατά κύριο λόγο σημαίνει τον πνευματικό φωτισμό του ανθρώπου ένεκα της γνώσεως του αληθινού Θεού. Κατ επέκταση, μπορεί να συμβολίζει τη γνώση του υλικού κόσμου, την παιδεία, την καλλιέργεια, τη σοφία, τη γεώργηση του όλου ανθρώπου, ώστε να πορευθεί προς την τελειότητα, τη θέωση. Αρκεί όλα αυτά να γίνουν πράξεις, τρόπος ζωής και όχι νεκρή γνώση και τυπολατρία. Ο Ιησούς Χριστός στη συνέχεια τονίζει ξεκάθαρα: «ος δ αν ποιήση και διδάξη, ούτος μέγας κληθήσεται εν τη βασιλεία των ουρανών». Η έμπρακτη εφαρμογή του λόγου του Θεού είναι η καλύτερη διδασκαλία. Η ένωση του ανθρώπου με την πηγή του φωτός, που είναι ο ίδιος ο Ιησούς Χριστός τον μεταβάλλει σε μια φωτεινή ύπαρξη. Αυτό είναι που με τη χάρη του Θεού πέτυχαν οι Άγιοι Πατέρες, που σήμερα γιορτάζουμε. Για να γίνουν οι Άγιοι Πατέρες φώτα, που φώτισαν όλη την Οικουμένη, ενώθηκαν με την πηγή του φωτός. «Φως όλοι γεγονότες θείον, ως θείου φωτός γεννήματα» (Γρηγόριος Θεολόγος, Λόγος εις τα Άγια Φώτα, ΕΠΕ 5, 74). Τα «καλά έργα», αποτελούν την αυτονόητη εκδήλωση και τον απαραίτητο καρπό της φωτεινής ζωής. Άκαρπος χριστιανός αποτελεί αντίφαση, διότι η ιδιότητα του χριστιανού εκφράζεται με έργα και όχι μόνο με λόγια. Εκτός από την έννοια του φωτός ο Ιησούς Χριστός χρησιμοποιεί επίσης την παραβολική εικόνα της πόλεως, η οποία είναι κτισμένη ψηλά στην κορυφή ενός βουνού και ως εκ τούτου δεν μπορεί να κρυφτεί, αλλά φαίνεται από πολύ μακριά. Έτσι και οι Μαθητές, ο τρόπος ζωής τους δηλαδή, οι πράξεις και τα έργα τους, δεν μπορούν να κρυφτούν αλλά είναι φανερά. Από αυτό προκύπτει η ευθύνη όλων μας ως μαθητών του Ιησού Χριστού, ώστε η ζωή μας να αποτελεί πρότυπο. Η σχέση του Ιησού Χριστού με το Μωσαϊκό Νόμο είναι το δεύτερο μεγάλο θέμα της ευαγγελικής περικοπής. Ο Χριστός απαντώντας στους κατηγόρους του, ότι με τη διδασκαλία και τα έργα του στρέφεται εναντίον του Νόμου (βλ. θεραπείες ασθενών το Σάββατο) τονίζει εμφαντικά: «Μη νομίσητε ότι ήλθον καταλύσαι τον νόμον ή τους προφήτας ουκ ήλθον καταλύσαι, αλλά πληρώσαι». Εδώ το ρήμα «πληρώσαι» ερμηνεύεται με την έννοια της εκπλήρωσης. Δηλαδή: «Δεν ήρθα να καταργήσω το Νόμο, αλλά να τον εκπληρώσω». Ούτε ένα γιώτα δεν κατάργησε από το νόμο ο Ιησούς Χριστός, αφού η επί γης παρουσία και αποστολή του αποτελούν εκπλήρωση των προφητειών και όχι την κατάργηση. Ο Χριστός ερμήνευε το Νόμο κατά το πνεύμα και όχι κατά το νεκρό γράμμα όπως έκαναν οι νομοδιδάσκαλοι. Απορρίπτει δηλαδή ο Ιησούς Χριστός τη στείρα ερμηνεία του Νόμου που έκαναν οι νομοδιδάσκαλοι του Ισραήλ και μιλά για την ουσία του νόμου, του νόμου του Θεού, του οποίου τις προφητείες εκπληρώνει με την παρουσία του στον κόσμο. Ο Ιησούς Χριστός διακρίνει τις 8

9 ανθρώπινες παραδόσεις από τις εντολές του Θεού που περιέχονται στο νόμο. Η πλήρωση του νόμου είναι το έργο και η αποστολή του Ιησού Χριστού. Οι μαθητές εξ άλλου, έχουν υποχρέωση και καθήκον τήρησης του θείου νόμου, καθώς και της διδασκαλίας του προς τους άλλους. Η εφαρμογή και διδασκαλία του νόμου εκ μέρους των Μαθητών καθορίζεται επίσης με το λόγο του Χριστού: «ος δι αν ποιήση και διδάξη, ούτος μέγας κληθήσεται εν τη βασιλεία των ουρανών». Είναι ο τρόπος ζωής, ο οποίος πρέπει να συνάδει με το περιεχόμενο των λόγων μας. Η Εκκλησία όρισε τη συγκεκριμένη ευαγγελική περικοπή κατά την ημέρα της μνήμης των 630 Πατέρων της εν Χαλκηδόνι Δ Οικουμενικής Συνόδου, για να μας μεταφέρει το μήνυμα, ότι οι Άγιοι Πατέρες έγιναν πράγματι το φως του κόσμου και ότι η διδασκαλία, το έργο και η παραδειγματική ζωή τους ήταν σύμφωνα με το θέλημα του Θεού, γι αυτό και ανακηρύχθηκαν μεγάλοι από το Θεό στη Βασιλεία του. Αυτούς καλούμαστε να μιμηθούμε. Χωρίς αμφιβολία ο ευαγγελικός λόγος του Κυρίου είναι διαχρονικός και άρα σύγχρονος. Απευθύνεται στους Χριστιανούς κάθε εποχής και ίσως περισσότερο στη δική μας εποχή, όπου κυριαρχεί η σύγχυση ιδεών και αξιών και περίσσευσαν τα λόγια και οι διακηρύξεις έναντι των έργων. Πρέπει να είμαστε φωτεινές εστίες, φωτεινοί λαμπτήρες πρώτα μέσα στο σπίτι μας, στο οικογενειακό μας περιβάλλον. Οι πράξεις μας να είναι έργα του φωτός και όχι του σκότους. Η χριστιανική ζωή είναι για τον κόσμο η καλύτερη απόδειξη της χριστιανικής διδασκαλίας. Η πίστη του χριστιανού είναι ολοκληρωμένη όταν το θεωρητικό της περιεχόμενο εκδηλώνεται εμπράκτως, οπόταν μπορούμε να γίνουμε «φως» αν ενώσουμε τις ζωές μας με την πηγή του φωτός που είναι ο ίδιος ο Ιησούς Χριστός.
