2 Easter is upon us. Easter week will begin on the 9 th of April, Palm Sunday, and will culminate in the following weekend with the commemorations of Good Friday, Easter Saturday and Easter Sunday. During this period, all Christians gather in Churches across the globe to commemorate the Crucifixion, Internment and Resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ. This year, 2017, the Eastern and Western Christian Churches will be celebrating Easter on the same dates. The celebrations of the Western and Eastern Churches do not always fall on the same dates every year. There are two reasons for this. Firstly, we, of the Eastern Orthodox Church, base our calculations on the Gregorian Calendar and the rest of Christianity base their calculations on the Julian Calendar. The Julian Calendar is about 13 days behind the Gregorian. Secondly, the Eastern Orthodox Church adheres to the rule of the 1 st Ecumenical Council, held in Nicea in 325 AD, that has set for Easter to be celebrated after the first full moon following the March Equinox but always after the Jewish Passover. This is because the Crucifixion, Internment and Resurrection of Christ happened after the Passover. The Western Churches do not follow that part of the rule that requires Easter to follow the Jewish Passover and on occasions the Western Easter takes place either before or during the Passover. The dates coincide when the full moon following the March Equinox comes so late that it counts as the full moon after the 21 st of March in both the Julian and the Gregorian Calendars. SUGGESTIONS OF THINGS TO DO ON THE FOLLOWING HOLY DAYS Holy Thursday Today begin the preparations for the traditional Easter dinner, baking the tsoureki and dying the eggs. People believe that these eggs can last 40 days outside a fridge without going bad. In the evening come to the Church service, hear the reading of the 12 Gospels and witness the symbolic representation of the crucifixion of Christ. In many communities, women stay in Church all night and mourn the passing of Christ.

3 Tsoureki (Greek Easter Bread) Recipe Ingredients: 500 gm plain flour 21 gm dried yeast 125 ml milk 2 eggs (lightly beaten, plus extra for brushing) 50 gr caster sugar 2 orange rinds, finely grated 2 teaspoons of mahlepi Softened butter, coarsely chopped, plus extra for serving 3 red Easter eggs Preparation: (Allow about 3 hours for preparation and baking) 1. Combine the flour, yeast and a pinch of salt in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a dough hook. Form a well in the centre. Add milk, eggs, sugar, orange rind, mahlepi and 100 ml lukewarm water and mix contents until a soft dough forms (5-7 minutes)

4 2. Gradually add butter, a little at a time, mixing until a smooth soft dough forms (3-5 minutes). Place in a lightly greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap and set aside until doubled in size (40 minutes to an hour). 3. Knock back dough and divide into 3 pieces. Roll each piece into a 45 cm long cylinder, plait the pieces together, then bring ends together to form a wreath and squeeze to join. Place on an oven tray lined with baking paper and set aside to prove slightly (20 minutes) 4. Preheat oven to 180 degrees Centigrade. Brush wreath with egg wash, gently push red Easter eggs (unpeeled) into wreath and bake until wreath is golden and cooked through (25-30 minutes). Cool on a wire rack. 5. Serve plain or with butter. Mahlepi and Red Easter egg dye are available at Mediterranean delicatessens. Follow the instructions on the packet of the dye. Good Friday This is the holiest day of the Holy Week. The day is to be devoted to mourning and no work or cooking is done. During the day come and join those women and children of our Parish who take flowers to the Church and decorate the Epitaphio. In the evening come and join the rest of the congregation in the evening liturgy and follow the procession of the Epitaphio around the streets surrounding our Church. Why do you not come and participate in the Eitaphio choir. If you are interested please contact Father John on his mobile Come on all you parishioners with those golden voices. Holy Saturday During the day, families begin preparations for the food feast to follow after the resurrection of Christ at midnight and on the next day. Traditional dishes like the mayeritsa (a traditional soup made from the internal organs of a lamb) are prepared and perhaps the kokoretsi and the lamb for the spit on Sunday. In the evening come to Church and participate in the Resurrection of Christ together with all the other parishioners. Candles can be acquired to be held in readiness for the Agio Fos (the holy light) passed down by Father John from the Iero (the Altar) and then by person to person. According to tradition, the first person to receive the holy light will encounter good luck for the rest of the year.

5 When Father John calls out Christos Anesti (Christ has risen) at midnight and the church bells ring you can all respond by saying Alithos Anesti (He has truly risen). You should then exchange the same wishes with other parishioners and partake in the fili tis agapis (kiss of Agape). You could stay on and enjoy the rest of the service but if you decide to continue the celebrations at home do not forget to bless the home by making the sign of the cross with the smoke of the holy flame on the frame of the entry door and to light your kandili with the holy flame. Do not forget that these candles are supposed to be used only for one Easter midnight service. While lavishing your mayeritsa and tsougrisi (crack) the red coloured eggs keep in mind the meaning of the occasion, the Resurrection of Christ. Easter Sunday Together with family and friends it is time to eat your kokoretsi, the lamb on the spit and all the other delicacies that have been prepared for the day. What about having some spirited dancing in the Hellenic festive tradition and while doing so keep in mind that the lamb on the spit is the symbol of Jesus who was sacrificed as a lamb for the salvation of all of us. NEW YEAR EVE DANCE On the eve of New Year 2017 the Ladies of the Philoptohos, with the support of the Church Committee, held a New Year s Eve dance at the Church s Hall. The night was a success. Many parishioners attended and all had an enjoyable evening with dancing, singing and dining on delicious homemade delicacies provided by the ladies. The nonstop music was played by Yianni and Dionysio. In particular, the bouzouki music generated a lot of kefi. Dancing was continuous all night.

7 At midnight, Father John accompanied by the ladies cut the Christopsomo and Greek carols were sung by all present. Everyone left very happy and the New Year started with much love.

8 VASILOPITA (Greek New Year s Cake) A Vasilopita (literally translated as Bread of Basil ) is a traditional Greek cake (or bread) prepared and enjoyed to celebrate the New Year. In some places the Vasilopita is prepared as a loaf of rich bread while in other places it takes the form of a spicy sheet cake. But no matter what form the Vasilopita takes they all have one thing in common. Each contains a single coin, hidden inside the cake, wrapped in foil and the person who is fortunate enough to receive the coin in their slice of the cake is said to have good luck for the rest of the year. It is said that the Vasilopita symbolises the hope that the New Year will be filled with the sweetness of life, liberty, and happiness for all those who participate in the Vasilopita Observance. This old tradition is said to have commenced in the fourth century when Saint Basil the Great who was the Bishop of Caesarea, Cappadocia, wanted to distribute money to the poor in his Diocese. He wanted to preserve the dignity of the needy and did not want it to look like charity. So he commissioned some women to bake a sweetened bread and arranged to place gold coins inside the bread.

9 In our Church parishioners baked a number of Vasilopites, and after the Vasilopites were blessed following the Divine Liturgy for the feast of St Basil on January 1 st these were cut and served to those parishioners that were present. When cutting the Vasilopita the first portion is cut in remembrance of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. The second for the Holy Mother, The Virgin Mary, the third for St Basil the Great and the fourth for the poor. In the households, the Vasilopita is usually cut by the head of the household who makes the sign of the cross over the bread. The first portion is then cut for our Lord, Jesus Christ, the second for the home and the remainder served to the family members based on age or rank, with the most senior members receiving the first pieces followed by each family member according to age.

11 MOTOR NEURON DISEASE On 12 March after the Sunday Church Liturgy the Ladies of the Philoptohos and with the support of many of our parishioners held a luncheon at the Church s Hall. All proceeds were for the work of the New South Wales Motor Neuron Disease Association. The organisers Father Dimitrios Kokkinos from St John Church at Parramatta spoke about the disease. Father Dimitrios is also a neurologist and together with his Church duties also attends the Neurological Clinic of the Bankstown Hospital. Motor Neuron Disease (MND) is a serious and incurable form of progressive neurodegeneration. Over time the nerves in the spine and brain progressively deteriorate and patients lose the use of their limbs and ability to speak, swallow and breathe, while their mind and senses usually remain intact. MND can affect persons of any age but most are affected by it after the age of 40 (especially between the ages of 50 and 70). The disease is very rare and there is no known cure and not effective treatment. Help is usually provided to the patients by simply making their existence more comfortable.

12 About 10% of those affected it is hereditary and it affects all ages and all racial groups. Diagnosis is usually slow and the disease only becomes evident when it is well progressed. 80%to 90% of those affected become totally incapacitated and die within a year. All present were very attentive and felt the inevitable finality of the disease especially those who have faced these painful circumstances. Much research is being done but without material success.

16 Donations for this worthwhile cause were in abundance and from many quarters. The function raised the sum of $12,000. This sum was deposited in the Motor Neuron Disease Association of New South Wales Fundraising Account to be used for research and for helping those affected to enjoy a more comfortable existence. Should anyone wish to donate for this worthwhile cause please do so by contacting any member of the Philoptohos. LADIES WELFARE LEAGUE AND GOLDEN THREADS KNITTING GROUP The Ladies of the Wednesday knitting group, the Philoptohios Ladies, the Welfare League participants together with friends and family held a luncheon just prior to Christmas to celebrate the end of the year and Xmas. Father John and Presvytera Maria also attended and an enjoyable time was had by all. Every Wednesday at the Church Hall, the Welfare League meets at 10:30am, and the Golden Thread Knitting Group starts at 12 noon to 2pm.

17 YOUNG ACHIEVER OF OUR PARISH Another young achiever in our Parish. Marina Kriketos the daughter of Peter and Marie Kriketos and the granddaughter of our Past President and stalwart of our Parish, Nikita Lentakis, was selected to display her felt Fairy Dress that she created for her HSC major of Textiles and Design work in Texstyle, the HSC showcase that celebrates textile and design students. Marina, named after her Yiayia, our much-loved deceased parishioner, Marina Lentakis, is a student of Davidson High School. She spent many hours to create a woodland fairy dress for the Textiles and Design HSC major work. Marina started designing her delicate costume with wired wings in January A competent ballet student turned to nature and classical ballet for inspiration. She had not made anything like this before but she loves fairies, her ballet and admires

18 the detailed costumes worn by classical dancers. The separate skirt, top and wings are decorated with freehand embroidery and embellished with crystal beads. She intends to go to Europe for her gap year and then hopes to study media art at the University of New South Wales Art and Design School. We would like to congratulate her for her achievement and wish her well in her future endeavours. ANY INFORMATION PROVIDED WILL BE SUBJECT TO EDITORIAL PREROGATIVE. AFTERNOON SCHOOLS Our schools have begun 2017 with earnest. The classes of our afternoon schools started in February. Owing to organisational problems we had to close the Wahroonga School and those students have been invited to join the Brookvale or Crows Nest School for lessons held on Monday at Brookvale and on Tuesday at Crows Nest. With newly painted classrooms, sanded and polished floors as well as new white boards, presentation uniforms and caps our students have embraced the afternoon language schools. Parents please remember to bring your children for Holy Communion at Easter.

19 WELL DONE VICTORIA We would like to congratulate Victoria Paleologos, one of our young members of our Parish, for cutting her long hair in support of the Kids for Cancer. Victoria grew her hair for a couple of years and did not hesitate to cut it and donate it to the Foundation together with a sum of $2,000 that she had raised. Victoria is the younger daughter of Dr Con and Mandy Paleologos (Dr Con is our Parish Secretary) and the granddaughter of George and Vaso Kriketos (George is a member of the Parish Committee), and Nikita and Marina Lentakis. The hair will be made into wigs through the Alopecia Foundation. Victoria was inspired to do this when her Aunt in Greece was diagnosed with cancer and had to wear a wig. She hopes to inspire other youngsters to do the same.

20 PLAYGROUP Mums, Yiayiades, and Aunties, bring your under 6 s to play with a happy friendly family group. We sing, play, craft, and have lots of fun. See you there!!!

21 SUNDAY SCHOOL ( ) We would like to congratulate Vasili Psaromati, our long time Sunday School coordinator and teacher, for his recent marriage to Fotini, the daughter of Father Dimitrios Kokkinos from the St John Church, Parramatta. We wish them all the best in their future together. However, we are disappointed that with all his other commitments Vasili will no longer be heading our Sunday School. HELP As you are all aware the Parish is the owner of a number of buildings. These require a lot of maintenance and use of funds from the Parish, which are raised by hard work and by the generosity of parishioners. These funds can and should be more usefully utilized for other worthwhile activities within the Parish. In the Parish we have numerous well meaning, generous and professional trades persons who could assist in maintaining the buildings by voluntarily providing their expertise. Many are doing so presently, and many have offered their services in the past to provide us, the present and future generations of the Parish, with the facilities that we are enjoying. We would be grateful for more voluntary assistance. If you would like to assist and help the Parish, please contact Angelos Argus on or by on angelos.argus@gmail.com. All trades are useful, as help is needed with masonry, tiling, painting, gardening, electrical, plumbing, tree lopping etc.

22 ARCHDIOCESE AFTERNOON TEA Many parishioners from all the Sydney churches attended the Archdiocese s afternoon tea function that was held to support the collection of funds for the Greek Orthodox Mission at Madagascar. Members of our Parish attended and Mrs Maria Kondos once again donated one of her exquisite paintings. The lucky person winning the bidding at the auction was Mrs Rita Verity, a member of our Philoptohos Committee. Congratulations Mrs Verity and well done to all those of our Parish that represented us at the function and for supporting such a worthwhile cause.

23 25 TH OF MARCH - GREEK INDEPENDENCE DAY Congratulations to those parishioners, teachers, and school children that attended the celebrations of the Greek Independence Day by partaking in the Laying of the Wreaths Memorial Service at the Cenotaph in Martin Place and marching with all the other Greek Schools and Greek Associations from the Cenotaph to the Courtyard of the Opera House. They did so with pride and enthusiasm. We could do with more participants next year. Our Committee member George Moscos controlling the start of the parade.

LUNCHEON PALM SUNDAY 9th APRIL 2017 We are pleased to announce our annual Palm Sunday luncheon on 9th April The luncheon will take place in our Church Hall immediately after the Church Service. The main plate will consist of grilled fish, salad, chips, soft drinks, beer etc. Tickets are $30 (discounted price of $15 applies to people under the age of 15). As usual, wine will be available for purchase. To assist us service you better on the day, we would appreciate if you can book in advance your tables and the number of people attending.
