1 GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH OF THE ANNUNCIATION YORK, PENNSYLVANIA THE LADDER JUNE 2015 JUSTIN THE MARTYR & PHILOSOPHER JUNE 1ST This Saint, who was from Neapolis of Palestine, was a follower of Plato the philosopher. Born in 103, he came to the Faith of Christ when he was already a mature man, seeking to find God through philosophy and human reasoning. A venerable elder appeared to him and spoke to him about the Prophets who had taught of God not through their own wisdom, but by revelation; and he led him to knowledge of Christ, Who is the fulfillment of what the Prophets taught. Saint Justin soon became a fervent follower of Christ, and an illustrious apologist of the Evangelical teachings. To the end of his life, while preaching Christ St. Justin the Msrtyr June 1st in all parts, he never put off his philosopher's garb. In Rome, he gave the Emperor Antoninus Pius (reigned ) an apology wherein he proved the innocence and holiness of the Christian Faith, persuading him to relieve the persecution of Christians. Through the machinations of Crescens, a Cynic philosopher who envied him, Saint Justin was beheaded in Rome in 167 under Antoninus' successor, Marcus Aurelius (reigned ). Besides his defense of Christianity (First and Second Apologies), Saint Justin wrote against paganism (Discourse to the Greeks, Hortatory Address to the Greeks), and refuted Jewish objections against Christ (Dialogue with Trypho). Apolytikion of Martyr Justin the Philosopher in the Plagial of the First Tone Thou didst empty the cup of the wisdom of the Greeks, and thou didst thirst yet again, till thou camest unto the well where thou foundest water springing to eternal life. And having drunk deeply thereof, thou didst also drink the cup that Christ gave to His disciples. Wherefore, O Justin, we praise thee as a philosopher and Martyr of Christ. Andrew My beloved brothers & sisters in Christ, It s so easy to get caught up in our vacation plans and grow lazy in our church attendance and spiritual life during the summer months. God doesn t go anywhere on vacation, and we shouldn t find excuses to take a vacation from church. How can we continue on our journey with Christ during the summer months? Try implementing some of the ideas below and use them for inspiration in finding additional ways to keep your family close to Christ! So, where does God rank in your family's summer plans? Will He go with you on vacation, or will a break from school and work mean a break from God? This summer we want to invite you to take the Summer Challenge. Instead of taking a rest from your spiritual life, we want your family to use the summer to grow closer to God. Be creative! Be committed! Be with Christ! Here are some ideas to get you started: Go to Church! Summer is a wonderful time to worship with your family. Attend Divine Liturgy as well the other services offered throughout the season. If you are vacationing, visit different Orthodox churches (even if they are not Greek). To find an Orthodox church close to you, visit: Don't forget to check the calendar of the church for special fasting periods and other celebrations. Information can be found at: chapel/calendar. Camp Out! No, not the kind where you pitch a tent in the middle of the wilderness (although that can be fun); we re talking about sending your children to our wonderful Orthodox summer camp program at Camp Nazareth. It is a great way for them to experience the faith. These sessions fill up quickly, so to get information or to register, visit: summer-camp. Take a Hike! Summer is a great time to really appreciate the beauty of God s design. So hike, bike, fish, and swim-- just get out there! While you're there, consider pausing to read Psalm 104, which is a beautiful poem of God s creation. Be an Explorer! Decide on something you want to learn about Christ and His Church this summer and explore! Perhaps you want to learn how to chant ( or you want to learn more about the Gospel ( family). Help Out! Christ was a servant to all and He wants us to be the same. Consider projects you can do to help others both in your neighborhood and globally. Check with our parish or other neighboring parishes for summer opportunities and events you can be involved in. Also check with the following: International Orthodox Christian Charities ( and Orthodox Christian Mission Center ( if you want to help people outside your community. For something really different, consider volunteering your time with Project Mexico ( and build a house for some very special families. Listen Up! We are surrounded daily by so much noise. Why not try listening to something different? Orthodox Christian Network ( has music and interviews that edify the soul in both English AND Greek. Also, check out Ancient Faith Radio ( another Orthodox Internet broadcast (AFR also has an app for both Android and Apple platforms). Bottom line, let s not forget about God while we are on vacation He doesn t ever forget about us! Wishing you all a safe, blessed and spiritually uplifting summer. Andrew

(1 Thess 5:12-13) In his First Letter to the Thessalonians, St. Paul directs us to honor those who labor for our community. In the spirit of thanksgiving for the dedicated work rendered by the faithful of this Metropolis in service of their Lord through their dedicated stewardship to the parishes, the Metropolis of Pittsburgh will be recognizing the volunteers of your parishes at the second annual St. Photios Awards Banquet. This year, the two members of our community that were honored at this event were Mrs. Vasiliki Livaditis and Dr. Panteleimon K. Pandelidis. We thank you for your many years of tireless service and dedication to our parish, and may the Lord continue to bless you throughout your lives. May they always be worthy! 7 JUNE 2015 PAGE 7 YOUTH NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM OUR GRADUATING GOYANS: OFFICERS Marta Tsikitas, President Magdalini Drivas, Vice-President Luke Tsoflias, Treasurer Marianna Rodas & Sam Rodas, Secretaries GOYA has impacted my Greek Orthodox faith in a very positive way. Through my years in GOYA, I have made many new friends at tournaments and other GOYA gatherings at other parishes. These friendships are very special because we are all connected as Greek Orthodox Christians. GOYA helped me understand the importance of community service and the importance of giving back. GOYA has played a positive role in my life. Evy Koutsokostas GOYA has made me a better Christian. Through all the volunteer work and church retreats, it has made me realize the importance of giving back to the community. Being around other GOYAns has also made me feel more confident about my faith and feel more connected to God. Matthew 19:14 HOPE/JOY he mission of HOPE and JOY is to T strengthen the relationship of young Orthodox Christians with our Lord Jesus Christ. These programs work to educate and edify young members of the Church, encouraging them to become active sacramental participants in the life of the Body of Christ, the Church. These ministries offer them the opportunity to experience the Faith, ultimately leading them to Salvation. HOPE (Holy Orthodox Primary Education) HOPE ministers to Kindergarten through the 2nd Grade children. JOY (Junior Orthodox Youth) JOY ministers to 3rd through 6th Grade children. The scope of these ministries is to incorporate the 4 principles of Worship, Witness, Service and Fellowship into the hearts of our children, so that they can use these tools as adults as well. We invite all children, and their parents as well, to become participants in these vital ministries of the Church.

8 PAGE 8 THE LADDER THE VOICE OF OUR FAITH IF YOU DON T HEAR CRYING, THE CHURCH IS DYING TONY ALEXIOU People were bringing little children to Christ to have Him touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the Kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the Kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it. Mark 10:13-16 I have young kids ages 5 and 3 to be specific. They re great kids, my wife and I love them incredibly and thank God each day for the blessings He gave us. These two little blessings though can be quite active, and loud and usually at times when we wanted nothing more than for them to be still and quiet especially when they were babies. Taking them to church was always a challenge when one was a toddler and one was an infant, it didn t take long for them to become bored who needs Christ when all you really want is to run around and explore, right? Each Sunday my wife and I would undergo the same ritual get up, take care of the kids, go to church with our bag of tricks in tow and keep them occupied and quiet, distract them (which would work until about the Great Entrance) and end up in the cry room with a bunch of other bleary-eyed parents annoyed that they are again technically at church but not really at church. Our saving grace is now that both kids started Sunday school this year and for the first time in the five years since we have been parents, we are now taking in services childless. For periods of time before this though, it was tough. The reason we did all of that was for the benefit of other parishioners. When our youngest was really young, we had all intention of staying the full service with her. We figured it was easy feed her, distract her, next thing we d know the parish council president would be giving the weekly announcements at the end of the liturgy and off to the hall we d go for coffee and fellowship. Great success! We (I) figured that if the baby cried a bit, we d handle it and besides, it was a small baby, who would mind a couple of small cries from a temporarily fussy baby? Apparently, a lot of people did. The amount of dirty looks we would get, hushed voices that felt like they were condemning us to a parental purgatory, sighs and pursed lips with eyes of indignation from little old ladies was too much to bear at least for my wife. I didn t care the way I saw it, we had as much a right to pray as everyone else did. Just because we had young kids we should be banished from church? Well, my family and I pretty much were as are many families in my situation each and every Sunday by people that feel they need monastery standards of quiet to be able to pray. The cry room is not a place where one can pray it is a place where cheerios are flying every which way, where kids are wrestling for the same ball and where people catch up and chit chat. It s a place where little kids maneuver to get what they need; toys, space, another kids snack; plotting their next moves to become King of the room all while the parents are trying to keep some sort of futile

9 JUNE 2015 PAGE 9 IF YOU DON T HEAR CRYING, THE CHURCH IS DYING (CONT.) order. It s like a well-dressed version of Lord of the Flies set to the soundtrack of sniffles. No cavalry to save the day shows up to save the day. Ever. A lot of stuff goes on in the cry room, none of it is praying though. A couple of weeks of this was all it took before my wife and I figured there was no point in even coming to church anymore. We could do what we were doing in the cry room at home without the early morning mustering and getting out the door. Why expose our kids to germs? Why get dressed up only to spend two hours in the church building trying to balance on toddler sized chairs, making labored small-talk with other parents that don t want to be in this little jail any more than you do? Yeah, no thanks. Where I take solace in this story is that for all the people that don t want children in church for fear of being disturbed, just as many do but those people are just more coy about it. A church is not a monastery. A church is filled with families that want to pray. It s filled with parents that want to put their kids on the right path. It is these young families that, believe it or not, are the future of the church; of the faith itself. By pushing away families with young children, you are condemning the church to a slow and quiet death. There are many parishes across this country that are facing that right now. When parishioners age and pass on to the next life, with no one coming up behind them, who is going to support this church? My family s story ended differently than that, thankfully. After spending a couple of Sunday s at home, we resolved not to be chased away from prayer because our kids are full of life. If the church wasn t going to change to adjust to young families, we would help it change. My wife began a group for mothers of infants and toddlers one that was very well received and it still running strong even though my kids (and wife) graduated out of it. I became an usher (mostly) to give courage (and some advocacy) for other young parents that wanted to take part in the service. We grew a resolve because we were not going to let some parishioners dictate our praying and our faith. Not all parents do that. They just don t come back. What s worse still is that I know priests that discourage young families; that ask families with kids that make any sound to leave one priest in particular would actually stop the liturgy and ask the parent to take their child outside. Needless to say that this church became a church of senior citizens and only now is beginning to change with a new priest at the helm. As Orthodox Christians, we need to be mindful of young families. As it is, they are exhausted and nervous about their children misbehaving and wanting to do the right thing. The last thing they need is judgment from other Christians when all they want to do is pray and put their kids on the right path. When you see a parent struggling with a fussy child at church, instead of scowling at them, how about you offer them a hand, like the Christian you purport to be. Instead of chasing them out of the sanctuary with your looks and sneers, help them come closer to God. Realize that this young family is the future of your church and your faith and pushing them out the door to satisfy your need to complete silence helps no one, not even you. Christ said bring the children unto me. Help parents do that so that everyone can reap the reward.

12 PAGE 12 THE LADDER ΑΠΟ ΤΟ ΓΡΑΦΕΙΟ ΤΟΥ ΠΡ. ΑΝΔΡΕΑ... Αγαπημένοι μου αδελφοί εν Χριστώ, Είναι πολύ εύκολο όταν έρχετε το καλοκαίρη, και είμαστε απασχολημένοι με τα σχέδια των διακοπών μας και να γίνουμε τεμπέληδες όσον αφορά τον εκκλησιασμό μας και την πνευματική μας ζωή αυτούς τους μήνες. Ο Θεός δεν πάει πουθενά για διακοπές, και δεν θα πρέπει να βρίσκουμε δικαιολογίες για να πάρουμε διακοπές από την εκκλησία. Πώς μπορούμε να συνεχίσουμε την πνευματική μας πορεία με τον Χριστό κατά τους καλοκαιρινούς μήνες; Ας δοκιμάσουμε την εφαρμογή ορισμένων από τις παρακάτω ιδέες και να τις χρησιμοποιήσουμε για την έμπνευση και για την εξεύρεση επιπλέον τρόπους για να κρατήσουμε την οικογένειά μας κοντά στον Χριστό! Οπότε, που βρίσκεται ο Θεός στην κλίμακα των καλοκαιρινών σχεδίων της οικογένειάς σας; Θα πάει μαζί σας στις διακοπές, ή μήπως ένα διάλειμμα από το σχολείο και την εργασία σημαίνει ένα διάλειμμα και από τον Θεό; Αυτό το καλοκαίρι θέλω να σας προσκαλέσω να πάρετε μια «Καλοκαιρινή Πρόκληση». Αντί να πάρουμε ένα διάλειμμα από την πνευματική ζωή μας, θέλω της οικογένειές μας να χρησιμοποιήσουμε το καλοκαίρι για να πλησιάσουμε τον Θεό. Να είμαστε δημιουργικοί! Να είμαστε δεσμευμένοι! Να είμαστε με τον Χριστό! Εδώ είναι μερικές ιδέες για να ξεκινήσετε: Πηγαίνετε στην εκκλησία! Το καλοκαίρι είναι μια υπέροχη στιγμή για να προσκυνήσετε με την οικογένειά σας. Παρακολουθείστε την Θεία Λειτουργία, καθώς και τις άλλες τελετές που προσφέρονται σε όλη τη σεζόν. Αν κάνετε Η ΚΛΙΜΑΞ... διακοπές, επισκεπτείτε διάφορες ορθόδοξες εκκλησίες, όπου και να βρίσκεστε. Ψάξετε το διαδύκτιο για να βρείτε μία ενορία κοντά εκεί που θα είστε. Μην ξεχάσετε να ελέγξετε το ημερολόγιο της εκκλησίας για ειδικές περιόδους νηστείας και άλλες γιορτές. Στείλτε τα παιδιά σας στην Κατασκήνωση! Εδώ, δεν μιλάμε για το είδος όπου μπορείτε να στήσετε μία σκηνή στη μέση της εξοχής (αν και αυτό μπορεί να είναι διασκεδαστικό). Μιλάμε για το υπέροχο πρόγραμμα που έχει η Μητρόπολή μας στην Κατασκήνωση Ναζαρέτ. Είναι ένας πολύ καλός τρόπος για τα παιδιά μας να γνωρίσουν την πίστη, καθώς και άλλα Ορθόδοξα παιδιά. Πάρτε έναν περίπατο! Το καλοκαίρι είναι μια υπέροχη εποχή για να εκτιμήσετε πραγματικά την ομορφιά της κτήσεως του Θεού. Επιλέξετε από το περπάτημα, το ποδήλατο, το ψάρεμα, και το κολύμπι-- απλά να βγείτε έξω! Και καθώς είστε εκεί, ίσως και να διαβάσετε τον 104 ο Ψαλμό, το οποίο είναι ένα όμορφο ποίημα της δημιουργίας του Θεού. Να είστε εξερευνητής! Αποφασίστε σχετικά με κάτι που θέλετε να μάθετε για τον Χριστό και την Εκκλησία Του αυτό το καλοκαίρι και να εξερευνήσετε! Ίσως θέλετε να μάθετε πώς να ψάλλετε ή θέλετε να μάθετε περισσότερα σχετικά με το Ευαγγέλιο. Βοηθείστε! Ο Χριστός ήταν ένας υπηρέτης σε όλους και θέλει να είμαστε το ίδιο. Εξετάστε τα έργα που μπορείτε να κάνετε για να βοηθήσετε τους άλλους, τόσο στη γειτονιά σας και σε παγκόσμιο επίπεδο. Πάντα υπάρχουν ευκαιρίες συμμετοχής στην ενορία μας ή άλλες γειτονικές κοινότητες για το καλοκαίρι. Επίσης, ελέγξτε τα ακόλουθα: η Διεθνής Ορθόδοξη Χριστιανική Φιλανθρωπία

13 JUNE 2015 PAGE 13 ( και το Κέντρο Ορθοδόξου Χριστιανικής Ιεραποστολής ( αν θέλετε να βοηθήσετε τους ανθρώπους πέρα από την κοινότητά μας. Αυτές οι οργανώσεις πάντα έχουν έργα και προγράμματα που μπορείτε να βοηθήσετε. Ακούστε! Είμαστε περικυκλωμένοι καθημερινά από τόση φασαρία. Γιατί να μην προσπαθήσουμε να ακούμε κάτι διαφορετικό; Το Ορθόδοξο Χριστιανικό Διαδίκτυο ( έχει μουσική και συνεντεύξεις που οικοδομεί την ψυχή στα Αγγλικά ΚΑΙ στα Ελληνικά (στο πατήσετε ή το «Δεύτε Λάβετε Φώς», ή το «Φάρος» για τα Ελληνικά). Επίσης, υπάρχουν και προγράμματα από την Ελλάδα και άλλες πηγές στο Διαδίκτυο για την απόλαυσή σας (όπως, π.χ. το 4Ε, ή το πρόγραμμα της Πειραικής Εκκλησίας). Αυτό που είναι σημαντικό είναι το να μην ξεχάσουμε τον Θεό ενώ είμαστε σε διακοπές... Εκείνος δεν ξεχνάει ποτέ εμάς! Σας εύχομε όλοι ένα ασφαλές, ευλογημένο και πνευματικά πλούσιο καλοκαίρι. Ανδρέας Ο Άγιος Ιουστίνος ο Φιλόσοφος 1 Ιουνίου Από τους μεγαλύτερους διδασκάλους και απολογητές της Εκκλησίας, ο Ιουστίνος, γεννήθηκε 100 χρόνια μετά τον Χριστό, στη Συχέμ της Σαμάρειας. Οι γονείς του ήταν Έλληνες ειδωλολάτρες (τον πατέρα του, τον έλεγαν Πρίσκο Βάκχιο) και αυτή τη θρησκεία κληρονόμησαν και στο γιο τους, που τον διέκρινε καταπληκτική ευφυΐα, αλλά και φιλομάθεια. Ανήσυχο πνεύμα καθώς ήταν ο Ιουστίνος, γνώριζε όλες τις γνωστές φιλοσοφίες της εποχής του. Ωστόσο, όμως, καμιά δεν τον ανέπαυε πλήρως και συνεχώς αναζητούσε το κάτι άλλο, το τέλειο. O Θεός, βλέποντας την αγνότητα και την ειλικρινή πρόθεση των φιλοσοφικών του αναζητήσεων, ανταποκρίθηκε. Μια μέρα, καθώς ο Ιουστίνος βάδιζε κοντά στη θάλασσα, συνάντησε ένα γέροντα, που ήταν άριστα καταρτισμένος στην αλήθεια της Άγιας Γραφής. Επακολούθησε διάλογος και από τον Ιουστίνο εφαρμόστηκε ο λόγος του Σοφού Σειράχ: "Λόγον σοφόν εάν ακούσει επιστήμων, αινέσει αυτόν και έπ' αυτόν προσθήσει.". Δηλαδή, ο πραγματικά συνετός, αν ακούσει κάποιο σοφό λόγο, θα τον επαινέσει και πάνω σ' αυτόν θα προσθέσει και ο ίδιος κάποιον άλλον. Έτσι και έγινε. O Ιουστίνος, αναλύοντας τα λόγια του γέροντα, ανακάλυψε την αλήθεια και με το τάλαντο της φιλοσοφίας που είχε, αναδείχθηκε όχι μόνο υπερασπιστής της χριστιανικής πίστης, αλλά και μάρτυρας, δίνοντας ακόμη καιτη ζωή του. Αποκεφαλίστηκε στη Ρώμη, περί το 165 μ.χ., επί βασιλείας Μάρκου Αυρηλίου.

14 JUNE 2015 PAGE 14 Εάν δεν Ακούς Κλάματα, η Εκκλησία σας Πεθαίνει Αντώνης Αλεξίου Οι άνθρωποι έφερναν μικρά παιδιά στο Χριστό για να τους αγγίξει, αλλά οι μαθητές τους επέπληξε. Όταν ο Ιησούς είδε αυτό, ήταν αγανακτισμένος. Εκείνος τους είπε: «Ἄφετε τὰ παιδία ἔρχεσθαι πρός με, καὶ μὴ κωλύετε αὐτά τῶν γὰρ τοιούτων ἐστὶν ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ Θεοῦ. Αμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν, ὃς ἐὰν μὴ δέξηται τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ Θεοῦ ὡς παιδίον, οὐ μὴ εἰσέλθῃ εἰς αὐτήν.» Μάρκος 10: Έχω μικρά παιδιά - ηλικίας 5 και 3 συγκεκριμένα. Είναι καλά παιδιά, η γυναίκα μου και εγώ τους αγαπάμε απίστευτα και ευχαριστώ τον Θεό κάθε μέρα για τις ευλογίες που μας έδωσε. Αυτές οι δύο μικρές ευλογίες μπορούν, όμως, να είναι αρκετά δραστήρια και δυνατά, συνήθως στις μερικές φορές όταν θέλουμε τίποτα περισσότερο απ αυτά, παρά το να είναι ήρεμα και ήσυχα - ειδικά όταν ήταν μωρά. Το να τα πέρναμε στην εκκλησία ήταν πάντα μια πρόκληση - όταν ο ένας ήταν μικρό παιδί και ο άλλος ήταν μωρό, δεν χρειαζόταν μεγάλο χρονικό διάστημα για να βαρεθούνε - ποιός χρειάζεται τον Χριστό, όταν το μόνο που πραγματικά θέλεις είναι να τρέξεις και να εξερευνήσεις, σωστά; Κάθε Κυριακή η γυναίκα μου και εγώ θα υποστούμε το ίδιο τελετουργικό θα σηκωθούμε, θα φροντίσουμε για τα παιδιά, θα πάμε στην εκκλησία με την τσάντα μας με τα παιχνιδάκια και τά άλλα κόλπα για να τους κρατήσουμε απασχολισμένα και ήσυχα, (το οποίο θα λειτουργούσε μέχρι περίπου την Μεγάλη Είσοδο) μόνο και μόνο να καταλήξουμε στο «ιδιαίτερο» δωμάτιο με ένα σωρό άλλους γονείς με θολά μάτια ενοχλημένοι ότι είμαστε και πάλι τεχνικά «στην εκκλησία», αλλά όχι πραγματικά στην εκκλησία. Το μόνο που μας έχει σώσει είναι τώρα ότι και τα δύο παιδιά άρχισαν τό Κατηχιτικό φέτος και για πρώτη φορά στα πέντε χρόνια που έχουμε γίνει γονείς, φτάσαμε τώρα στο σημείο που πάμε στην Λειτουργία «άτεκνα». Για το χρονικό διάστημα πριν από αυτό όμως, ήταν δύσκολο. Ο λόγος που κάναμε όλα αυτά ήταν προς όφελος των άλλων ενοριτών. Όταν ο νεότερος μας ήταν πολύ νέος, είχαμε όλη την πρόθεση να παραμείνουμε στην πλήρη Λειτουργία μαζί της. Νομίζαμε ότι θα ήταν εύκολο θα την ταΐζαμε, θα αποσπάγαμε την προσοχή της, το επόμενο πράγμα που θα ξέραμε ο πρόεδρος του συμβούλιου θα παρουσίαζε τις εβδομαδιαίες ανακοινώσεις στο τέλος της Λειτουργίας και μετά στην αίθουσα για την ώρα του καφέ. Μεγάλη επιτυχία! Εμείς νομίζαμε ότι αν το μωρό έκλαιγε λίγο, εμείς θα το χειριστούμε και πέρα τούτου, ήταν ένα μικρό μωρό, σε ποιόν θα πείραζε μερικές στιγμές μικρών κραυγών από ενα προσωρινό ιδιότροπο μωρό; Προφανώς, πολλοί άνθρωποι ενοχλίθηκαν. Τα άσχημα βλέματα που λάβαμε, ήσυχες φωνές που αισθανθήκαμε σαν να μας καταδικάζουν, αναστεναγμούς και σφιγμένα χείλη με τα μάτια της αγανάκτησης από μερικές ηλικιωμένες κυρίες, ήταν πάρα πολλά για να αντέξει η γυναίκα μου. Εμένα δεν με ένοιαζε - ο τρόπος με το οποίο το είδα, είχαμε τόσο πολύ το δικαίωμα να προσευχηθούμε, όπως όλοι οι άλλοι. Επιδή είχαμε μικρά παιδιά θα έπρεπε να εκδιωχθούμε από την εκκλησία; Λοιπόν, αυτό ακριβώς έγινε στη οικογένειά μου - όπως και πολλές οικογένειες στην κατάστασή μου κάθε Κυριακή από ανθρώπους που αισθάνονται ότι χρειάζονται μοναστηριού-τύπου ησυχίας για να είναι σε θέση να προσευχηθούν. Το «ιδιαίτερο» δωμάτιο που πηγαίνουν οι γωνείς με τα παιδιά τους δεν είναι ένας τόπος όπου μπορεί κανείς να προσευχηθεί είναι ένας τόπος όπου τα Cheerios πετούν σε κάθε κατεύθννση, όπου τα παιδιά παλεύουν για την ίδια μπάλα και όπου οι άνθρωποι περνάν την ώρα τους στην κουβεντούλα. Είναι ένα μέρος όπου τα μικρά παιδιά μετακινούνται για να πάρουν αυτό που χρειάζονται - παιχνίδια, χώρο, κτλ. - που σχεδιάζουν τις επόμενες κινήσεις τους για να γίνουν «βασιλιάς του δωματίου» - όλα αυτά ενώ οι γονείς προσπαθούν να κρατήσουν κάποια μάταιη τάξη. Είναι κατάσταση απόλυτου χάος με καλοντυμένους, και πολλές φορές συναχομένους, προταγωνιστές. Κανένα ιππικό για να σώσει την ημέρα

15 JUNE 2015 PAGE 15 Εάν δεν Ακούς Κλάματα, η Εκκλησία σας Πεθαίνει Αντώνης Αλεξίου εμφανίζεται για να σώσει την κατάσταση. Ποτέ. Πολλά πράγματα συμβαίνουν στο δωμάτιο αυτό, κανένα από αυτά δεν είναι προσευχή, όμως. Μια-δυο εβδομάδες ήταν το μόνο που χρειάστηκε πριν η σύζυγός μου και εγώ κατάλαβαμε ότι δεν υπήρχε λόγος πιά να ερχόμασται στην εκκλησία. Θα μπορούσαμε να κάνουμε ό, τι κάναμε στο «ιδιαίτερο» στο σπίτι χωρίς να σηκονόμαστε νωρίς το πρωί και να τρέχουμε έξω από την πόρτα. Γιατί να εκθέτουμε τα παιδιά μας στα μικρόβια των άλλων παιδιών; Γιατί να ντυθούμε μόνο για να περάσουν δύο ώρες στην εκκλησία προσπαθώντας να ισορροπήσουμε σε καρέκλες για μικρά παιδιά, καθιστώντας συζητήσεις με άλλους γονείς που επίσης δεν θέλουν να είναι σε αυτή τη μικρή φυλακή; Όχι, ευχαριστώ. Το μόνο σημείο πού μπορώ να βρώ ανακούφιση σε αυτή την ιστορία είναι ότι για όσους ανθρώπους που δεν θέλουν να υπάρχουν μικρά παιδιά στην εκκλησία για το φόβο να διαταραχθούν, υπάρχουν τόσους άλλους που δεν τους πειράζει, αλλά αυτοί οι άνθρωποι είναι απλά πιο ήσυχοι για αυτό. Η ενορία δεν είναι μοναστήρι. Η ενορία είναι γεμάτη με οικογένειες που θέλουν να προσευχηθούν. Είναι γεμάτη με τους γονείς που θέλουν να βάλουν τα παιδιά τους στο σωστό δρόμο. Είναι αυτές οι νέες οικογένειες που, είτε το πιστεύετε είτε όχι, είναι το μέλλον της εκκλησίας. Διώχνοντας τις οικογένειες με μικρά παιδιά, καταδικάζετε την εκκλησία σε ενα αργό και ήσυχο θάνατο. Υπάρχουν πολλές ενορίες σε ολόκληρη αυτή τη χώρα που αντιμετωπίζουν αυτή την πραγματικότητα τώρα. Όταν οι ενορίτες μεγαλώσουν και περάσουν στην επόμενη ζωή, χωρίς να υπάρχει κάποιος να έρχεται από πίσω τους, ποιός πρόκειται να στηρίξει αυτή την εκκλησία; Η οικογενειακή μου ιστορία τελείωσε με διαφορετικό τρόπο από αυτό, ευτυχώς. Αφού περάσαμε ένα-δυό Κυριακές στο σπίτι, αποφασήσαμε να μην κυνηγηθούμε από την προσευχη γιατί τα παιδιά μας είναι ζωηρά. Εάν η εκκλησία δεν επρόκειτο να αλλάξει για να προσαρμοστεί στις νέες οικογένειες, εμείς θα τη βοηθήσουμε να αλλάξει. Η γυναίκα μου άρχισε μια ομάδα για τις μητέρες των βρεφών και των νηπίων - μια που εξακολουθεί να λειτουργεί ισχυρά, ακόμη και αν τα παιδιά μου (και η γυναίκα μου) αποφοίτησαν από αυτήν. Έγινα επίτροπος (κυρίως) για να δώσω κουράγιο (και κάποια συνηγορία) για άλλους νέους γονείς που ήθελαν να λάβουν μέρος στην τελετή. Αποφασίσαμε ότι δεν επρόκειτο να αφήσουμε κάποιους ενορίτες να υπαγορεύουν την προσευχή μας... και την πίστη. Δεν το κάνουν αυτό όλοι οι γονείς. Απλώς φεύγουν και δεν έρχονται πίσω. Το χειρότερο ακόμα είναι ότι ξέρω ιερείς που αποθαρρύνουν τις νέες οικογένειες. Που ζητούν τις οικογένειες με παιδιά που κάνουν λίγο θόρυβο να φύγουν - ένας ιερέας σταματούσε την Λειτουργία για να ζητήσει από τον γονέα να πάρουν το παιδί τους έξω. Περιττό να πούμε ότι αυτή η εκκλησία έγινε εκκλησία των ηλικιωμένων ενοριτών και μόλις τώρα αρχίζει να αλλάζει με ένα νέο ιερέα στο τιμόνι. Ως Ορθόδοξοι Χριστιανοί, πρέπει να είμαστε προσεκτικοί των νεαρών οικογενειών. Είναι ίδει, νευρικοί και εξαντλυμένοι σχετικά με τα παιδιά τους, με το να συμπεριφέρονται σωστά στην Εκκλησία. Το τελευταίο πράγμα που χρειάζονται είναι να κριθούν από άλλους Χριστιανούς, όταν το μόνο που θέλουνε να κάνουμε είναι να προσευχηθούνε και να θέσουν τα παιδιά τους στο σωστό δρόμο. Όταν βλέπετε έναν γωνέα να αγωνίζεται με ένα ιδιότροπο παιδί στην εκκλησία, αντί να ρίχνετε βλέματα σε αυτούς, ίσως μπορείτε να τους προσφέρετε ένα χέρι βοήθειας, όπως ο Χριστιανός θα έκανε που φιλοδοξείς να είσαι. Αντί να τούς κυνηγάς έξω από τον ναό με την ματιά σου και τον χλευασμό σου, να τους βοηθήσεις να έρθουν πιο κοντά στο Θεό. Συνειδητοποιήστε ότι αυτή η νέα οικογένεια είναι το μέλλον της εκκλησίας σας και την πίστη σας και ωθώντας τους έξω από την πόρτα για να ικανοποιήσετε την ανάγκη σας για ολοκληρώτική σιωπή δεν βοηθά κανέναν, ούτε καν εσένα. Ο Χριστός είπε «να φέρετε τα παιδιά σε μένα.» Βοήθείστε τους γονείς να το κάνουν αυτό, έτσι ώστε ο καθένας μας να μπορεί να απολαύση τη ανταμοιβή.

18 PAGE 18 THE LADDER Council Meeting April 14, 2015 Meeting began with a prayer by Father Andrew at 7:14 PM Attendance Council Members: Fr Andrew Tsikitas, Nick Agapis, Alex Doularis, Michael Hiras, Vicki Karandrikas, Lola Lamnatos. George Lapes, Tom LIvaditis, Chriss Papayannis, Maria Skouras. Minutes President s Remarks: March meeting minutes were not ready for approval at this meeting. They will be on the May agenda. Correspondence: Alex D. announced there was a bat in the church. Work was performed to seal entrance in a bat-friendly way. Maria S. asked about response to inquiry about allocation/assessment process. Lola L. is working on response and needs 2014 figures to complete the 2015 form. His Eminence thanked us for our sympathy card for the passing of his mother. Treasurer s Report Lola L. is working on draft allocation and 2016 budget. She aims to provide this information for Council review at May meeting. Lola L. established special fund stamp to designate donations for specific projects of the church, like major capital projects, baptismal font. Lola L. also ordered other stamps deposit only and address stamps for the church. These stamps are intended to help improve the process used to classify the church s finances. Lola L. announced that Father Andrew s pay raise was not implemented on January His salary, including the raise, is being recalculated for payment over the remainder of the year. The Council also reviewed the pay rates for other church employees: Secretary (Diane) $14/hour, Janitor: $10/hour, Greek school teacher: $871 bi-monthly for Sept-June. Lola L. noted that no raises have been given since Some Council members praised Diane s work ethic and loyalty to the church. Alex D. motioned for a $0.50/hour increase for Diane Maria S. seconded the motion, which was unanimously approved. Tom L. proposed going to church safety deposit box, along with another witness. Tom L. hopes to find Frank King photos of the church s groundbreaking ceremony. The Council will consider continuing to have a safety deposit box. Tom L. questioned a $500 expense in March. Father Andrew confirmed it was for wine purchase. Alex D. noted reduction in gas bill (compared to last year) due to termination of Shipley contract. Stewardship Committee Nick A. announced donation button is now live on the church website. Nick A. is working with Lola L. to create banking arrangement to transfer funds from Paypal to Church s main bank account. Nick A. working with Diane to capture online donations in Church records. Church Bulletins will be posted on new website in PDF. Father Andrew will coordinate redirection from old to new website & deletion of contents of old website. Father Andrew suggested creating a Dropbox account for exchange of community photographs. Building Committee Report The Building Committee was not able to meet to discuss funding schemes. They plan to meet this Thursday, April 17, Grounds & Maintenance Report May 2, 9 AM Parish clean up. Outside cleaning (trash, dead plant removal). Mike H. will acquire plants at upcoming seedling sale to spruce up the Church grounds. He will also purchase mulch, etc. Mike H. requested funding to purchase supplies and materials related to beautification of the Church s grounds. Alex D. made a motion to provide Mike H. a budget of up to $1,000. Dr. Lapes seconding the motion, and it was unanimously approved. All parish members will be invited and encouraged to assist. The sound system in the church is not working and Mike H. is troubleshooting it. Mike H. needs to get two more speakers and mixer. Mike H. suggested purchasing new, more durable microphone for Father Andrew to minimize audio problems during service. Food Festival Tom L. announced the dates. The Council discussed signage i.e., whether to move to plastic lawn signs or keep metal signs. Because lawn signs are less expensive, it might allow the Church to get signs and broader coverage. Tom L. reported supplies are now starting to be ordered. There is a need for assistance for cutting the gyro meat. Lola L. suggested reaching out to media sources to advertise for the food festival (radio, newspaper). Lola L. asked about exploring Greek jewelry sale at the Food Festival to benefit GOYA. The Council also discussed selling alcohol at the food festival in the future and seeking potential sponsorship for menus as ways to keep the festival attractive and create new sources of revenue. General Assembly Preparations The Council discussed draft agenda for Spring General Assembly. The Council discussed the need for a presenter from the Building Committee and discussed the importance of presenting a budget and funding mechanism, and next steps to the community. The Council also discussed available funds approximately $75,000 that could be used for the expansion project. The Council changed the date for the General Assembly to Sunday, May 3, 2015, due to the number of outstanding issues that needed to be addressed regarding the building expansion prior to the General Assembly. Contracts The Council reviewed revised contracts for rental of the Hellenic Cultural Center and outside caterers. Council members are to review in more detail prior to the May meeting. Miscellaneous The Council discussed planning a community Dinner Dance to coincide with Father Andrew s 10 year anniversary at the Church. Chriss P. is exploring marble installation for alter floor to replace the carpet. The boiler and hot water system will be gutted in next 2 weeks. Alex D. is securing necessary equipment at wholesale through his employer. Nick A. emphasized the need for temporary storage to clear out clutter throughout the Church. Nick A. made a motion for temporary storage, which was seconded by Mike H. The temporary storage is authorized for 1- year to provide time to dispose of unnecessary clutter. The meeting adjourned at 9:30 p.m. with a prayer by Father Andrew
