SAINT- SPYRIDON.ORG CATECHISM 101 We have been having great discussions in our Bible Study this month as we continue to study the book of Exodus. We are looking at all the wonders that God performed in His liberating the Israelites out of Egypt. The ten plagues that God afflicted on Pharaoh and the Egyptians are well known thanks to numerous Hollywood renditions. In reading the text, however, there were two questions that arose in our discussions: If God already knew that Pharaoh would not let the Israelites go until the tenth plague by which Pharaoh s first born son was killed, then why did God send the previous nine plagues? Furthermore, if it was up to Pharaoh alone to let the Israelites free then why did God afflict all the Egyptians and not just Pharaoh? To answer the first question, we need to understand the nature of the ten plagues. God announced to Pharaoh, through Moses, that if he did not let His people go, his first born son would die. Pharaoh did not listen. Naturally, God could have made good on His threat immediately. Through these plagues, God showed His power over nature, over what the Egyptians considered to be divine, such as the river Nile. These plagues did not harm the Israelites, which proved God s favor for them and His complete control over the plagues that fell upon Egypt. The plagues took also place over a period of time sufficient for Pharaoh to repent. In fact, in the midst of each plague, Pharaoh would promise to let the Israelites free. Unfortunately, Pharaoh would change his mind once the plague had subsided. Through the series of plagues God gave Pharaoh nine different chances for him to repent and save himself from the final plague which was the death of his son. Each and every time, Pharaoh came close to repenting, but his pride prevented him from heeding God s will. Pharaoh did not take advantage of the nine opportunities and the time that he received in the form of these successive plagues afflicted upon him and his people. God desired the liberation of the oppressed Israelites because it is was the just thing to do. The nine plagues were given to show that God gave ample opportunity for Pharaoh to obey Him and to do what he knew was right. The carrying out of the tenth plague was more the choice of a stubborn and prideful Pharaoh rather than the punishment of a just God. Our second question has to do with why all the plagues were applied upon all the Egyptians and not just Pharaoh. While the Hebrews were unaffected by all of them, including the plague of darkness, the Egyptians suffered greatly because of their Pharaoh s stubbornness and pride. But were they not as guilty as Pharaoh? Did they not deserve to suffer with him and because of him? Examining the behavior of the Egyptians, it is true that they had exploited the Israelites as slaves for centuries. They ignored their history and the blessings they had received from these descendants of Joseph. They abhorred them and suppressed them. On the most part they obeyed their Pharaoh in killing the Hebrew male children and tossing them into the Nile river. It is no accident that the first plague was the turning of the river Nile into blood, reminding them of the slaughter of the innocent children of the Israelites. Throughout these centuries, the Egyptians did not rise against their king. They preferred their comfort, they became accustomed to the presence of slaves, and they did not stand up and fight for the innocent, the oppressed and the defenseless. Justly, they too would shared in the fate of Pharaoh, as they did not repent, and thus chose not be spared of the final plague. Of course, in our study of the scriptures we must always speak to our times. The plagues upon Egypt were the foreshadowing of God s intervention upon the world that we read in the Book of Revelation. In the 16 th chapter of Revelation we read about the bowls of wrath which will fall upon the earth, which include the turning of water into blood, hail, frogs, pestilence, sores, darkness, and death. All that is read in Revelation as signs before the Second Coming of the Lord can be interpreted in events throughout human history. Tragedies, diseases, calamities, natural or man-made disasters which become progressively worse and more severe over time, have been prefigured in the plagues which were sent 2 The Voice

3 upon the Egyptians prior to the final plague which led to the liberation of the Israelites from Egypt. In our times, we are approaching the Second Coming, the liberation of the New Israel, the Church triumphant which will enter the Promised Land which is the Kingdom of Heaven. Prior to this Last Day, many calamities will fall upon all the earth. By these we will know that Judgement Day is coming. Each time we hear of a disaster or cataclysmic event, it is meant to motivate us to repentance, to defeat the Pharaoh within us and perhaps even stand up to the Pharaohs of this world. As the last day approaches, the Lord will come to give justice when justice is not given by us. He will come to restore freedom when freedom is trampled upon by us. He will come to liberate those who believe in Him because He is the Lord and He has made a promise to those who love Him to bring them home to the Promised Land: the Kingdom of Heaven. His liberation can be for us a resurrection of life or a resurrection of judgment. It is up to us to choose how we receive chances that the good Lord gives as a gift to us. With each calamity that we hear about we know that the end of history is certain and the coming of the Kingdom is at hand. Let our heart not be hardened. Let us take advantage of the time and the opportunities offered to us. Let us be open to the love of our Lord Who has made a promise to us to save us and bring us home through His love and His mercy. Just as our family at home experiences different stages and particular needs, so does our faith community. We rejoice and struggle through every time and season. In the parish setting, our community gathers to celebrate the living presence of the Lord who is made present through the Divine Liturgy and the Sacraments. We also celebrate through the proclamation of the Word and through one another, especially when we reach out in love for our sisters and brothers. 4 October was an eventful month for the PTA. 4 The Voice P.T.A. NEWS On Sunday, October 16th, we all got together and celebrated our community s 99th Anniversary with a very successful Dinner Dance! It was a beautiful event with many new faces. The PTA would like to thank all the businesses and parishioners who supported our raffle. Without your support and donations our fundraising goals cannot be achieved. Our kids themed basket raffle was a huge success. Our students enjoyed participating in creating these baskets to raffle off. We are excited to start some new fundraising opportunities during our Greek School hours. Coming soon on Mondays Tiropita and Avgolemono Soup sales. Please look for preorder forms in your child s backpack in the upcoming months. All of our fundraising profits will go directly to renovating our stage. The OXI Day program was held on Friday, October 28h. Thank you to all the Greek School teachers for a beautiful program and to all the 1st and 2nd grade parents who hosted the festive reception. Our first Greek Pride Friday was celebrated school-wide with the participation of ALL our students reciting their Greek poems and signing patriotic songs. Please look for a Greek Friday schedule in your child s backpack coming soon. Our next PTA meeting is on Friday, November 4th at 5:00 p.m. We are going to have Make a Difference Day on Saturday November 19th. Last year we prepared thank you bags for our Palos Heights police officers, fire fighters and first responders. This time, it is for the veterans who are getting started in a new home. We will provide cleaning supplies and the like. It is a heartwarming project and it gets the youth involved in something for the vets and their families. It is a way to say Thank You for serving our country. Together with our Philoptochos, we are inviting our Greek School, Sunday School, Goyans, Joy, Altar Boys, Handmaidens, and Junior Choir to participate in this event. This would be a great opportunity for our High School students who need to complete service hours!! What a perfect time of year to Give Thanks. Food will be provided!! Hope to see you there. Lastly, in the past, our Godparent s Luncheon was held in November. This year it will be held in January. Stay tuned for information to come in the month of December. 5 Our first Field Trip of the school year was to the Children s Farm in Palos Park. It was such a typical fall day! Thank you to all the chaperones who attended the trip with us. The students enjoyed a real hands-on experience. They were able to pet a variety of farm animals. Everyone also went home with a pumpkin that they picked from the pumpkin patch, and wonderful memories of their first Field Trip. LIBRARY AWARDS Students check out library books on a daily basis at. 6 YOUTH MINISTRY NEWS HANDMAIDENS NEWS The Handmaidens held their first Ornament Sale on October 30th. There were plans for a second sale in November but thanks to the generosity of our parishioners, all the ornaments were sold in one day, and the Handmaidens raised $215. The money raised will be enough to buy the food needed to make sixty sack lunches for the homeless. On November 19th, at 10:30 a.m., the Handmaidens will have their next meeting to make and package the lunches and write words of enjouragement. BYZANTINE MUSIC SCHOOL We have eight students on our Byzantine Music School which takes place every Monday at 5:00 p.m. in our choir loft. The class covers the basics of Byzantine chant, introducing the students to Byzantine notation, and the chanting of simple hymns from the various services of the Church. In class we also translate the hymns that are written in Greek and speak about their meaning and use in liturgical services. The class is open to everyone and new students are always welcome. 7 SUNDAY SCHOOL October has been a busy month for Sunday School. Both students and teachers are situated in their class and students are working together to gain a better understanding of our Orthodox faith. On October 23 rd we had our parent Meet & Greet. Our hope was to connect parents with their children s teacher and get a feel for what we do in Sunday School. Stewardship is something we learn about in Sunday School and may be one of the most important and yet simple lessons. The idea of helping others and sharing our time, talent and treasure from the gifts God has given us. Students have the opportunity to share each week by contributing to our food pantry. This can be done through a monetary donation, a can of food, or through a donation of clothing. This month we had a clothing drive to help the Philoptochos in their Feed the Hungry initiative for November 8 th. It s not too late to send your child with either a gently used coat, hat, gloves or new items such as undershirts and socks, so that the Philoptochos can distribute them to those who need it. We are all so fortunate to have simple things like a hat, in such abundance - perhaps we can spare one for a person who has none. We are also hosting our 8 th annual Walk for IOCC on Saturday November 5 th at Lake Katherine. This is another opportunity to help those in need. The IOCC helps Orthodox Christians worldwide. One hundred percent of the proceeds from our event goes to the IOCC this is something we can do together as one family. I hope to see all of our Sunday School students there. ICONOGRAPHY SCHOOL Our Iconography School, under the leadership and teaching of Mr. Panagiotis Mihalopoulos, is progressing well with seven students attending the Wednesday evening classes. The students begin with drawing lines and letters before they move on to mixing colors and writing icons. New students are always welcome. 8 PHILOPTOCHOS NEWS Dear Fellow Parishioners, Kalo Mina! November 1 st is the feast Day of STS Cosmas and Damian, the patron Saints of the Philoptochos. They were physicians and gave their services free. On October 30th, the closest Sunday to November 1 st, we celebrated their Feast Day in church with an Artoclasia for the health of the members, and a memorial service for the departed members. We also presented our Annual Scholarship to our Peter Kolyvas who is now at the University of Illinois in Champaign. In conjunction with our 100 Anniversary special events, we honored the past recipients of our scholarship. It was a rewarding Sunday for all We pray that they will continue their path in life with dedication to our faith, and the principles of philanthropy, service, and dedication exemplified by our Philoptochos Sisterhood.. In the month of October we attended the Philoxenia Luncheon at our sister parish of Holy Cross. The food was wonderful and so was the fellowship. We attended His Eminence s Dinner at Georgios on the 27 th. A filled room was very nice to see. On November 6 th our church will have Iconography Sunday. Let us all be present. His Eminence will be with us to consecrate all the new icons. On November 8 th we will be going to the Annunciation Cathedral to feed the Hungry. If you want to help please come on Monday the 7 th to prepare and call the office if you plan on going the 8 th. We are still collecting clothing. Our next meeting will be on Saturday, November 12th at 10 a.m. We will have a representative to speak to us regarding making baskets for the veterans. We plan on making the baskets with the youth on November 19 th which is Make a Difference Day. The Philoptochos has started preparing for our Annual Craft Show which will take place on December 3 rd and 4 th. Some work days are: Melomakarouna November 2nd, Spanakopites November 14th, Diples November 26th, Baklava November 28th, Coffee cakes December 1st. 9 CHERUBS October was another fun month for our Cherubs group. We went on a Field Trip to the children's farm, worked on our abc's, and celebrated fall with a leaf painting. Our Jr. Goya was joined by our Saint Spyridon youth to the annual Odyssey Fun Farm outing on Sunday, October 23rd. Thanks to the generous hospitality of the Halikias family, our Goyans enjoyed a beautiful fall day walking in the corn maze, the hayride, and many fun activities. In one of our meetings, our Goyans enjoyed baking mystery cakes in our kitchen. Jr. Goya meetings take place every Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. and they are open to all the youth attending 6th-8th grades. 12 PARISH NEWS 99TH ANNIVERSARY DINNER DANCE On Sunday, October 16th, over 300 people gathered as a family to celebrate our community s 99th Anniversary. During the event, we honored some of the veterans and police officers of our community. The entire celebration was beautiful and memorable with a lot of young and young at heart enjoying the fellowship. The superb dinner was generously catered once again by Mr. Dean Eliacostas. Many thanks to the Dinner Dance chairman, Mr. James Korbakes, who along with his committee did a wonderful job in making a dinner dance a success. Many thanks also to all the donors for this year s sponsors, the donors and supporters for the PTA raffle, and all the donors and volunteers who helped make this celebration possible. Pictures on pages Christmas Fast The forty day fast for the feast of the Nativity begins Tuesday, November 15th. According to the Church canons, fish, wine, and oil are allowed until December 17th, except for Wednesdays and Friday. Strict fast is observed from December 18th to the 24th. This year, we will once again celebrate the Sarantaleitourgo, forty liturgies during the Christmas Fast. It is a custom of the Orthodox Church to celebrate forty consecutive liturgies leading up to Christmas Day. Starting on November 15th, the first day of the Christmas Fast, our community will celebrate the Divine Liturgy every morning. All parishioners are called to give their lists of names, of both the living and those who have fallen asleep, to be commemorated during the forty consecutive liturgies. Commemoration sheets are available in the narthex. Services will begin each morning at 8:00 a.m. FOOD PANTRY On November 8th, we will be going to the Annunciation Cathedral for the Feed the Hungry Program. At that time we also distribute coats, jackets, socks, t-shirts, hats, and gloves for the homeless as they prepare for the cold winter months. We wish to thank all our parishioners and friends of St. Spyridon for remembering our Food Pantry. As you know, our Food Pantry helps our St. Spyridon families that have a need for assistance. It is very important that we keep our Food Pantry filled at all times, so that we do not turn anyone away because of lack of food. If you wish to donate food or monetary donation for our Food Pantry and Thanksgiving Baskets, please bring your items/donation to the Church office. ICONOGRAPHY DEDICATION Sunday, November 6th, 2016 On Sunday, November 6th, His Eminence Metropolitan Iakovos will be celebrating the Divine Liturgy at our beloved Saint Spyridon, in order to honor the 20th Anniversary of our church s consecration and to observe the year long celebration of our 100th Anniversary. All the donors for our iconography, the pews, and our stained glass windows, are invited to celebrate together and to witness the dedication plaques placed on our Tree of Love. A special fellowship hour will be hosted by our Philoptochos following the Divine Liturgy. There is still time to be included among the donors by offering your gift toward athe following icons: Raising of Lazaros, Veneration by the Magi, Christ s Journey to Egypt, and the Last Supper. If you are interested in offering your gift toward one of these icons, please contact the church office or Fr. Tilemahos. 13 Bell Tower Construction We are waiting the return of our bell from Verdin Factory in Cincinnati, Ohio, where it will be retrofitted with a striker. In the meanwhile we will complete the last few repairs to our bell-tower. If all goes well, the bell should be installed by the New Year. The cost of the project is in excess of $40,000. There is a donation box in the narthex and in the hallway for anyone wishing to donate toward the bell tower restoration. For more information on how to help please see Fr. Tilemahos. Project Cost: $40,000 Total Collected: $23,300 Pilgrimage to St. John Chrysostom Monastery On Saturday, November 12th, we will take our annual trip to the Vespers Celebration of St. John Chrysostom Monastery in Kenosha Wisconsin. The bus will leave from Holy Cross in Justice, at 4:30 p.m. and return by 10:30 p.m. Ticket price is $15. Please call the church office by November 10th to reserve your seat on the bus. Christmas Craft Show & Food Festival The Christmas Craft Show will be held on December 3rd, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and December 4th from 12:00 noon to 3:00 p.m. Anyone wishing to help with baking sweets and bread or helping in the kitchen, call Mrs. Toula Georgiopoulos. Please, give the Philoptochos a helping hand! Fall General Assembly Meeting Our Fall General Assembly Meeting will be held on Sunday, November 13th, immediately after the Divine Liturgy Service. We urge all parishioners to attend this very important meeting. 16 ΚΟΙΝΟΤΙΚΑ ΝΕΑ ΓΙΝΕ ΚΑΛΟΣ ΟΙΚΟΝΟΜΟΣ ΤΗΣ ΕΚΚΛΗΣΙΑΣ ΤΟΥ ΑΓΙΟΥ ΣΠΥΡΙΔΩΝΑ Το Χριστιανικό πρόγραμμα της Εκούσιας Εισφοράς μας δίνει την ευκαιρία να ανταποκριθούμε στην αγάπη του Χριστού με το να διαιωνίσουμε τις διδασκαλίες του Κυρίου και την αποστολή της Ορθόδοξης Εκκλησίας μας. Η Εκούσια Εισφορά θέτει την ευθύνη για την υποστήριξη της Εκ-κλησίας εκεί που ανήκει, δηλαδή σε μας τους ίδιους. Ευχαριστούμε πολύ τις 351 οικογένειες που εκπλήρωσαν τις υποχρεώσεις τους για την φετινή χρονιά. Οι υπόλοιποι παρακαλούνται να ανα-νεώσουν την συνδρομή τους προς την Εκκλησία μας, συμπληρώνοντας την Κάρτα Υποσχέσεως και επιστρέφοντάς την, μαζί με το δώρο της αγάπης τους, στο γραφείο της Εκκλησίας μας. ΑΠΟΘΗΚΗ ΤΡΟΦΙΜΩΝ Μή ξεχνάτε ότι η εκκλησία μας παρέχει τρόφιμα σε οικογένειες που έχουν ανάγκη. Τούτον τόν μήνα ζητούμε κυρίως μπότες, ζακέτες και παλτά για τους χειμερινούς μήνες, καθώς και συσκευασμένα και φρέσκα τρόφιμα για την ημέρα των Ευχαριστιών. Θα θέλαμε να ευχαριστήσουμε όλους τους δωρητές για την αγάπη και την συνεχή γενναιοδωρία τους προς τους συνανθρώπους μας που βρίσκονται σε υλική ανάγκη. ΠΡΟΣΦΟΡΑ ΚΑΦΕ Για τον μήνα Νοέμβριο η Φιλόπτωχος θα προσφέρει τον καφέ και τα γλυκίσματα στο εκκλησίασμα τις Κυριακές μετά την Θεία Λειτουργία. Η βοήθεια όλων των μελών της Αδελφότητος είναι αναγκαία κάθε Κυριακή. ΛΕΩΦΟΡΕΙΟ ΓΙΑ ΤΟ ΜΟΝΑΣΤΗΡΙ Το Σάββατο 12 Νοεμβρίου θά έχουμε λεωφορείο για τον Μοναστήρι που εορτάζει την πανήγυριν του Αγίου Ιωάννου του Χρυσοστόμου. Το λεωφορείο θά φύγει από την ενορία του Τιμίου Σταυρού στίς 4:30 μ.μ και επιστρέψει στις 10:30 μ.μ., καί το κόστος είναι $15. Για κρατήσεις θέσεων τηλεφωνήσετε το κοινοτικό μας γραφείο μέχρι και τις 10 Νοεμβρίου. Το πρόγραμμα της εορτής είναι τό ακόλουθο: Σάββατο 12 Νοεμβρίου Μέγας Πανηγυρικός Εσπερινός 6:00 μ.μ. * Κυριακή 13 Νοεμβρίου Αρχιερατική Θεία Λειτουργία 8-11 π.μ. ΣΑΡΑΝΤΑΛΕΙΤΟΥΡΓΟ Την Τρίτη 15 Νοεμβρίου, αρχίζει η 40ήμερη νηστεία των Χριστουγέννων. Σύμφωνα με τους Ιερούς Κανόνες της Εκκλησίας μας επιτρέπονται το ψάρι, το λάδι και το κρασί ως και τις 17 Δεκεμβρίου, εκτός Τετάρτη καί Παρασκευή. Από τις 18 Δεκεμβρίου ως και τις 24 Δεκεμβρίου τηρείται αυστηρή νηστεία. Εφέτος, θά τελεσθεί Σαρανταλείτουργο, αρχίζοντας την Δευτέρα 14 Νοεμβρίου. ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΟ ΣΧΟΛΕΙΟ ΠΛΟΥΤΑΡΧΟΣ Η Διευθύντρια του Ελληνικού Σχολείου, κ. Λαμπρινή Σταύρου και όλες οι δασκάλες, θα ήθελαν να ευχαριστήσουν τον Σύλλογο Γονέων και Διδασκάλων και όλους τους γονείς που βοήθησαν με τον εορτασμό της ημέρας του ΟΧΙ. Θερμά συγχαρητήρια σε όλα τα παιδιά για την θαυμάσια παρουσίαση. Την Παρασκευή 25 Νοεμβρίου δεν θα έχουμε μαθήματα, λόγω της εορτής των Ευχαριστιών. ΧΡΙΣΤΙΑΝΙΚΗ ΦΙΛΟΞΕΝΙΑ Οι κυρίες της Φιλοπτώχου από τις πέντε Ορθόδοξες Κοινότητες των νοτίων προαστίων του Σικάγου, προσκαλούν όλους τους πιστούς της χρυσής ηλικίας των ενοριών μας στο τρίτο φετινό γεύμα που θα προσφεθεί από την κοινότητα της Κοιμήσεως της Θεοτόκου στην Ενορία του Αγίου Σπυρίδωνα, την Πέμπτη, 10 Νοεμβρίου. Ο Όρθρος και η θα αρχίσει στις 8:30 π.μ. και θα ακολουθήσει η δεξίωση και το γεύμα στην κοινοτική αίθουσα.
