SAINT- SPYRIDON.ORG CATECHISM 101 We continue in our Catechism 101 series to reflect on the book of Genesis, our Bible Study topic for this year. In the last issue, we looked into the relationship of freedom and love. In the quest for absolute freedom, Adam and Eve trampled on the will of a loving God. Therefore, they entered an adventure of sorrow and pain, not so much as a punishment for their sin, but as a method by which they could come to repentance. God allowed for man to become bound to illness and death in the hope of healing him and restoring him unto his former glory. All the misfortune that came to be because of the fall of man, should not be viewed only as a punishment, but also as a determined attempt to call mankind unto repentance and redemption. Athletics And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. The basis of these thoughts is first of all that God did not intend for sickness and death to come into our existence. When God created Adam and Eve, He created them to live forever in grateful dominion over creation and in continuous contemplation of the Creator. They were placed in the Garden of Eden to progress in their knowledge of themselves and of God, working toward complete communion with God. Unfortunately, they chose a different destiny, and God allowed them to exercise the freedom He had bestowed on them. True to His warning not to partake of the forbidden fruit, corruption and death became the hallmark of the path they had chosen. As a result, all joy than man could now have in this life was mixed with sorrow. Indeed, all creation was dragged by the fall of man unto a fallen state of corruption and disorder. The sentence of the exile of Adam and Eve out of Eden was executed not upon their committing the sin, but upon their unwillingness to repent. In their lack of repentance, they bound all of mankind to Satan, the one who will never repent, and as a consequence, pain and death replaced the bliss of Eden. While pain and death became the signs of being bound to evil, they also became the way by which man could chose once more to be bound to God as he was before. In this manner the punishment was indeed a gift. By the mystery of death, man is afforded the opportunity to become aware of his limitations, to realize the consequence of sin, and at the very least, his ability to sin inevitably comes to an end. Imagine what our world would look like if man experienced all the consequences of corruption like aging, illness, and pain, and yet there was no death. Life would resemble a horror movie without a resolution and without end. Through the mystery of death, the union of body and soul is now dissolved, putting an end to whatever pain and suffering associated with this life. However, the true nature of the mystery of death and how it is a gift for mankind was not revealed until the incarnation of Christ. When God became man, as it was always His intention, He not only embraced human nature as it was originally created, but He took on the consequences of sin on man s behalf. As the only Sinless One, Jesus did not have to succumb to the wages of sin such as pain, suffering, and death. He voluntarily embraced that fallen reality out of His love for man in order to redefine it. Therefore, this fallen reality is no longer viewed as our inheritance from Adam and Eve, but rather, as our participation in the life of Jesus Christ. While death entered into human history in order to put an end to man s rebellion, it now becomes the path by which man returns to his true destiny, which is to commune with God unto everlasting glory. Many times we repeat in our Bible Study: we do not seek pain but we embrace it. In a culture that tries to continuously alleviate pain by a myriad of pills and desperately trivializes or denies death, we as Orthodox Christians embrace these realities. Pain and death are not viewed as failures in our attempt to avoid them, but as the way God chose to bring us back to Himself. God never sought pain and death for Himself or for us, 2 The Voice

3 but when we chose them as our path, He walked and suffered with us in order to fill them with Himself. Therefore, never ask why bad things happen to good people. As mankind, we are the ones who brought suffering into this world. It is a suffering that God allowed to enter our life so that our rebellion will not go on forever as it will for Satan, but that through it we might find our way back to our original glory. When we feel pain or illness, we are reminded that our soul and body will one day separate. Just as we run to the doctor and our medicine cabinet for the healing of body, we should likewise run to our confessor for the healing of the soul. By turning to God in repentance, we no longer suffer in participation to the punishment of the unrepentant Adam and Eve, but we may suffer in participation to the suffering that Christ endured. The Kingdom of Heaven is not made for the sinless ones, but for sinners who have repented. In repentance, we step away from the path that Adam and Eve chose, and are rendered bound to God once again through His crucifixion. When we face our own mortality in repentance, we no longer die the death of Adam and Eve, but we die the death of Christ on the cross. And if we die with Him, we will also rise with Him unto a resurrection of life eternal. Amen. Fr. Tilemahos STEWARDSHIP 2014 Christian stewardship is proportional-giving, whether it be a tithe (10%) or a percentage thereof. It is not minimal-giving! ( How much do I have to give? is not Christian ) The fund-raiser mentality is a losing proposition: If we cannot support our own efforts as Orthodox Christian stewards, what does that say about our commitments to Christ? How can we rely on outsiders, non-adherents of Orthodoxy, to support the ministry of our Church? That is not spiritually healthy. Stewardship is about priorities and commitments, not amounts. Ask yourself this question: Can I commit, as part of my ongoing commitment to serving our Lord Jesus Christ, a greater portion of what God has already given me, (time, talents and treasures) and give it back to Him? If there is work in the parish to be done, will I donate my time and talents to help out? And what of my treasures (financial resources), do I give from what is left over, or first off to Him? 4 P.T.A. NEWS October was an eventful month for the PTA. We started the month with Plutarchos School pictures. On Sunday, October 19th, we all got together and celebrated our community s 97th Anniversary with a very successful Dinner Dance! The PTA would like to thank all the businesses and parishioners who supported our raffle. The OXI Day program was held on Monday, October 27th. Thank you to all the Greek school teachers for a beautiful program and to all the 1st and 2nd grade parents who hosted the festive reception and kept our thespians nourished! Our next PTA meeting is on Monday, November 3rd at 5:00 p.m. We look forward to seeing all the moms and dads there. We are always looking for new people and the wonderful ideas they bring. GODPARENT S SUNDAY SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 9TH On Sunday, November 9th, the Sunday School will be hosting Godparents Sunday. This is a special day for godchildren and godparents to gather with family and friends for worship and fellowship. As always, there will a brunch following the Divine Liturgy. Donation for the brunch is $15 for adults and $5 for children. Please call the church office with your reservations by November 7th. We are also looking for 10 individuals to help us serve. We would appreciate anyone that can lend a hand. For those that would like to donate to our Godparent s Brunch, we are in need of the following items: Fruit, 5 gallons of whole milk, 5 gallons of apple juice, 15 gallons of orange juice, 6 gallons of cranberry juice. We went on a Field Trip to the children's farm, worked on our abc's, and celebrated fall with a leaf painting. 4 The Voice

5 Our first Field Trip of the school year was to the Children s Farm in Palos Park. It was such a beautiful and warm fall day! Thank you to all the chaperones who attended the trip with us. The students enjoyed a real hands-on experience. They were able to hold baby chicks, ducks, and rabbits, and to pet a variety of other farm animals. Everyone went home with a pumpkin that they picked from the pumpkin patch, and wonderful memories of their first Field Trip. Also this month the children were very excited about the addition of three new bikes to our Gym inventory! LIBRARY AWARDS Students check out library books on a daily basis at. 6 PARISH News IN MEMORIAM FUNERAL Thomas Katris fell asleep in the Lord on October 21st. His funeral took place on October 27th and the internment was at Bethania Cemetery. Sophia Karagiannis fell asleep in the Lord on October 25th. Her funeral took place on October 28th at the Assumption Church in Chicago and her intenment was at Elmwood cemetery. May their memory be eternal! Everyone who brought oil for our oil lamps in church. CHRISTMAS FAST The forty day fast for the feast of the Nativity begins Saturday, November 15th. According to the Church canons, fish, wine, and oil are allowed until December 17th, except for Wednesdays and Friday. Strict fast is observed from December 18th to the 24th. This year, we will once again celebrate the Sarantaleitourgo, forty liturgies during the Christmas Fast. It is a custom of the Orthodox Church to celebrate forty consecutive liturgies leading up to Christmas Day. Starting on November 15th, the first day of the Christmas Fast, our community will celebrate the Divine Liturgy every morning. All parishioners are called to give their lists of names, of both the living and those who have fallen asleep, to be commemorated during the forty consecutive liturgies. Commemoration sheets are available in the narthex. Services will begin each morning at 8:00 a.m. FOOD PANTRY We wish to thank all our parishioners and friends of St. Spyridon for remembering our Food Pantry. As you know, our Food Pantry helps our St. Spyridon families that have a need for assistance. It is very important that we keep our Food Pantry filled at all times, so that we do not turn anyone away because of lack of food. If you wish to donate food or monetary donation for our Food Pantry and Thanksgiving Baskets, please bring your items/donation to the Church office. 6 The Voice

7 SUNDAY SCHOOL October was a busy month for both Sunday School students and teachers alike. Many thanks to all those who came out on October 4 th to join our 6 th Annual Walk for IOCC. It s always nice to get together and enjoy nature and the outdoors while raising money for those who are in need. Stewardship is such an important part of what we learn in Sunday School. Discussing how important it is needs to be part of our daily routine as Christians. Sunday School collections are taken by the teachers in each classroom. The younger children have been provided with offering envelopes that can be filled out and should serve as reminders that the act of giving is an important part of who we are. Help them get into the habit of giving. If they do it often, it will reflect in all they do. Additionally, we have a food pantry that we ask the students of Sunday School to contribute to. Please help your children by talking to them about this, and reminding them to bring their can of food to Sunday School class. Please note that there will be no class on November 9 th due to Godparent Sunday. We hope to see all of our Sunday School students in church with their Godparents. 8 PHILOPTOCHOS NEWS Dear Philoptochos Sisters, October has left and we are thankful for a wonderful Philoptochos Luncheon and successful Church Dinner. Dance. These events have been successful with our Lords Blessing, our donors, support of the community, and the hard work of our members. Thank you everyone. Many things are on the Agenda: Sunday November 2nd is our Philoptochos Sunday. We are having Memorial, Artoclasia and the Presentation of this year s Scholarship. On Saturday, November 16th, we are having our November Philoptochos meeting after the Divine Liturgy. On Monday, November 10th, Preparations for feeding the Hungry. On November 11th, we will Feed the Hungry at the Annunciation Cathedral. It is such a fulfilling experience for all who participate in this charitable event. This year Feed the Hungry is in memory of the late Peter Colovos and Carole Polimenakos. On December 6th and 7th, we are having our Annual Craft Show. On December 11th and 12th, our community will celebrate the feast day of our Saint Spyridon. In order to successfully host the reception for both days, we are asking for lenten pastry donations and help serving our guests. Please call me with your donations. Help is needed on the 11 th in the morning for set up etc. Our Philanthropic endeavors are only possible through your continued support of our various events and we thank you wholeheartedly. We will also provide several Lenten varieties. We invite our parishioners to support our crafters with their unique gifts for our Christmas giving. The success of the Craft Show will benefit our community tremendously and will assist in the many programs of the church. Our well known homemade traditional Greek pastries will be available for our parishioners to purchase for the Holidays. We will include Baklava, Diples, Galactoboureko, Koulourakia, Melomakarouna, Kourambiedes and many more. The show will take place on December 6 th from 9A.M. to 4 P.M. and December 7 th from 11 A. M. to 4 P.M. For more information, please call Olga Paxinos. 97th Anniversary Dinner Dance On Sunday, October 19th, over 300 people gathered as a family to celebrate our community s 97th Anniversary. During the event, we honored all the P.T.A. Presidents from the past thirty years: Pat Katsenis, Kay Manolis, Chrysoula Alexopoulos, Maria Loubroukos, Vicki Drikos, Angela Evangelopoulos, Georgia Theoharis, Kathy Meletis, Elaine Kouris, Kiki Gatsis, Irene Bacogiannis, Kiki Kladis, Kathy Korbakes, Stella Parhas, Dina Makris, and Presvytera Georgia Alikakos. All of the honorees have served as presidents of our P.T.A. and we thanked them for their many years of continued service. The entire celebration was beautiful and memorable with a lot of young and young at heart enjoying the fellowship. The superb dinner was generously catered once again by Mr. Dean Eliacostas, executive chef at Carmichaels. Many thanks to the Dinner Dance chairman, Mr. James Korbakes, who along with his committee did a wonderful job in making a dinner dance a success. Many thanks also to all the donors for this year s Commemorative Ad Book, the donors and supporters for our raffle, the Grecian Formula band that entertained us, and all the donors and volunteers who helped make this celebration possible. 9 PHILOPTOCHOS OUTING TO THE ART INSTITUTE The Philoptochos Ladies of St. Spyridon hosted a lovely outing to Chicago s Art Institute to see the new exhibit, Heaven and Earth, The Art of Byzantium, on Saturday, October 25 th. Our group, including Fr. Tilemahos, enjoyed viewing rare and priceless icons, mosaics, liturgical vestments, architectural fragments, manuscripts, jewelry, silver and gold pieces brought to the Art Institute from museums of Greece. Many of these pieces have never been seen outside of Greece! We were fortunate to have our tour led by one of our own Peter C. Korbakes, a graduate of University of Illinois, Chicago, who co-majored in history and the classics. Peter s knowledge and passion shone through as he guided us through the exhibit explaining in depth the importance and the influence of each piece and its role in Byzantine history. In fact, Peter s expertise went above and beyond the museum s explanation for each piece! Our Philoptochos has always been a supporter and promoter of our young people. We were definitely proud to listen to this young man and share in his enthusiasm for our rich history. After the Byzantine exhibit, we went on a self-guided tour of the Miniature Thorne Rooms tiny rooms representing various eras and decorated in fine detail. And then on to the exquisite Paperweights exhibit. Both exhibits are very popular and famous attractions at the Art Institute. Our group then headed to Greek Islands in Greektown for lunch and fellowship. The Ladies of Philoptochos would also like to thank Mr. John Spiro, our unofficial Philoptochos member, for once again taking beautiful pictures of our day. St. Spyridon Philoptochos Presents Antique Prayers A film produced by Paul Socrates Kaitson. A narrative faith based film that focuses on the power of prayer. 12 12 The Voice YOUTH MINISTRY HANDMAIDENS The girls had a great October! On Sunday, October 26th, they had a very successful first Bake Sale. Thank you to all who helped and supported the girls efforts. On October 26th, the girls hosted the Youth/Family Outing at the Odyssey Fun World. It was a great success! Thank you to all the families that joined us for fellowship and fun. In November, they are planning to help with hosting the Inclusion Awareness event on November 15th. JUNIOR GOYA&GOYA Welcome back all Goyans! We had our first meeting on Tuesday, September 16 th at 7:00 p.m. This was when we elected our officers of the year. The officers are: President- Irena Karopulos, Vice President- Peter Panagiotopoulos, Secretary-Konstantinos Alikakos, and Treasurer-Eraklis Labrakis. At this meetings we talk about various topics and our upcoming social events. Each week, each of the Goyans are preparing and presenting a topic for discussion that relates to something of their interest and ties back to our faith. The social events that we are planning to do is to see the Antique Prayers movie on November 24th, caroling in December, and a mini lock-in during Christmas break. We are also hoping to take a trip to St. Iakovos Retreat Center. The details of this event will be announced. We are always looking for new members to join and hope to see all Goyans at the next meeting.

13 ICONOGRAPHY PROJECT The final phase is our iconography project is under way and soon the iconography of our beautiful edifice will be completed. Only six icons remain available for dοnation. 1. Saturday of Lazarus 2. Last Supper 3. Transfiguration 2. Miracle of St. Spyridon 5. Flight to Egypt 6. Adoration of the Magi The cost of each icon is $15,000 but all donations are welcome and all donors will be recognized if requested. For more information on the iconography project please consult the brochures available at church or contact Fr. Tilemahos. DALARAS CONCERT FOR SIRC We are excited that George Dalaras, Greece s most popular singer, will be performing at a benefit concert for the St. Iakovos Camp and Retreat Center on November 30, 2014, at 7:00p.m. at the Harris Theater. We are blessed to have such an opportunity to both share our Greek musical heritage, while simultaneously raising funds for one of the most important ministries of the Metropolis one that impacts directly our youth and others, who will ultimately benefit from the camp and retreat center. Our Metropolis of Chicago has arranged with the Harris Theater to offer group seating for those parishes or parish organizations (philoptochos, senior groups, etc.) to be seated together at the event. There are three levels of groups tickets offered, Level A at $175, Level B at $137, and Level C at $100. If you wish to attend please respond by November 2nd with how many tickets you would need and at what Level. The Level that we will request for our group or groups will be based on the how many people choose each Level. There is no guarantee on Level arrangements. 16 ΚΟΙΝΟΤΙΚΑ ΝΕΑ ΓΙΝΕ ΚΑΛΟΣ ΟΙΚΟΝΟΜΟΣ ΤΗΣ ΕΚΚΛΗΣΙΑΣ ΤΟΥ ΑΓΙΟΥ ΣΠΥΡΙΔΩΝΑ Το Χριστιανικό πρόγραμμα της Εκούσιας Εισφοράς μας δίνει την ευκαιρία να ανταποκριθούμε στην αγάπη του Χριστού με το να διαιωνίσουμε τις διδασκαλίες του Κυρίου και την αποστολή της Ορθόδοξης Εκκλησίας μας. Η Εκούσια Εισφορά θέτει την ευθύνη για την υποστήριξη της Εκκλησίας εκεί που ανήκει, δηλαδή σε μας τους ίδιους. Ευχαριστούμε πολύ τις 330 οικογένειες που εκπλήρωσαν τις υποχρεώσεις τους για την φετινή χρονιά. Οι υπόλοιποι παρακαλούνται να ανανεώσουν την συνδρομή τους προς την Εκκλησία μας, συμπληρώνοντας την Κάρτα Υποσχέσεως και επιστρέφοντάς την, μαζί με το δώρο της αγάπης τους, στο γραφείο της Εκκλησίας μας. ΑΠΟΘΗΚΗ ΤΡΟΦΙΜΩΝ Μή ξεχνάτε ότι η εκκλησία μας παρέχει τρόφιμα σε οικογένειες που έχουν ανάγκη. Τούτον τόν μήνα ζητούμε κυρίως μπότες, ζακέτες και παλτά για τους χειμερινούς μήνες, καθώς και συσκευασμένα και φρέσκα τρόφιμα για την ημέρα των Ευχαριστιών. Θα θέλαμε να ευχαριστήσουμε όλους τους δωρητές για την αγάπη και την συνεχή γενναιοδωρία τους προς τους συνανθρώπους μας που βρίσκονται σε υλική ανάγκη. ΦΙΛΟΠΤΩΧΟΣ Η Φιλόπτωχος Αδελφότητα θα προσφέρει και πάλι φέτος την υποτροφία των δολ. Την Κυριακή της Φιλοπτώχου, 2αν Νοεμβρίου, Μετά την αρτοκλασία θα γίνει η παρουσίαση της υποτροφίας. Καλούμε όλα τα μέλη της Φιλοπτώχου να παρευρεθούν στην εκκλησία για το γεγονός αυτό. Θα ακολουθήσει συνεδρίαση της Φιλοπτώχου. Επίσης, κατά την διάρκεια του Νοεμβρίου θα προετοιμαζόμαστε για το Craft Show. Όλες οι κυρίες της Φιλοπτώχου καλούνται να βοηθήσουν για τον σκοπόν αύτόν. ΠΡΟΣΦΟΡΑ ΚΑΦΕ Για τον μήνα Νοέμβριο η Φιλόπτωχος θα προσφέρει τον καφέ και τα γλυκίσματα στο εκκλησίασμα τις Κυριακές μετά την Θεία Λειτουργία. Η βοήθεια όλων των μελών της Αδελφότητος είναι αναγκαία κάθε Κυριακή. ΛΕΩΦΟΡΕΙΟ ΓΙΑ ΤΟ ΜΟΝΑΣΤΗΡΙ Την Τετάρτη 12 Νοεμβρίου θά έχουμε λεωφορείο για τον Μοναστήρι που εορτάζει την πανήγυριν του Αγίου Ιωάννου του Χρυσοστόμου. Το λεωφορείο θά φύγει από τον Αγιον Κωνσταντίνο στίς 4:30 μ.μ και επιστρέψει στις 10:30 μ.μ., καί το κόστος είναι $15. Τηλεφωνήσετε το κοινοτικό γραφείο για κλείσεις θέσεων. Το πρόγραμμα της εορτής είναι τό ακόλουθο: Τετάρτη 12 Νοεμβρίου Μέγας Πανηγυρικός Εσπερινός 6:00 μ.μ. * Πέμπτη 13 Νοεμβρίου Αρχιερατική Θεία Λειτουργία 8-11 π.μ. ΣΑΡΑΝΤΑΛΕΙΤΟΥΡΓΟ Το Σάββατο 15 Νοεμβρίου, αρχίζει η 40ήμερη νηστεία των Χριστουγέννων. Σύμφωνα με τους Ιερούς Κανόνες της Εκκλησίας μας επιτρέπονται το ψάρι, το λάδι και το κρασί ως και τις 17 Δεκεμβρίου, εκτός Τετάρτη καί Παρασκευή. Από τις 18 Δεκεμβρίου ως και τις 24 Δεκεμβρίου τηρείται αυστηρή νηστεία. Εφέτος, θά τελεσθεί Σαρανταλείτουργο, αρχίζοντας την Παρασκευή 14 Νοεμβρίου. ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΟ ΣΧΟΛΕΙΟ ΠΛΟΥΤΑΡΧΟΣ Η Διευθύντρια του Ελληνικού Σχολείου, κ. Λαμπρινή Σταύρου και όλες οι δασκάλες, θα ήθελαν να ευχαριστήσουν τον Σύλλογο Γονέων και Διδασκάλων και όλους τους γονείς που βοήθησαν με τον εορτασμό της ημέρας του ΟΧΙ. Θερμά συγχαρητήρια σε όλα τα παιδιά για την θαυμάσια παρουσίαση. Την Παρασκευή 28 Νοεμβρίου δεν θα έχουμε μαθήματα, λόγω της εορτής των Ευχαριστιών.
