SAINT- SPYRIDON.ORG Catecism 101: The Sign of the Cross Twenty centuries ago, the cross was used as an instrument of torture and death. The Romans would condemn to crucifixion the worst of their criminals as a deterrent to others. Today, the symbol of the cross is dominant within our church life as a symbol of loving sacrifice, a symbol of joy and of salvation. We celebrate its exaltation and we raise it as a symbol of victory over sin and the power of death. It is one of the first symbols that we teach our children as we take them by the hand and form the sign of the cross over their body. It is this particular act of piety that will be the subject of this Catechism 101 article. When we make the sign of the cross it must always be done with faith, humility, and sanctity. First, however, we need to understand its symbolism and proper use. We take the thumb, index, and middle finger of our right hand and unite them as an image of the Holy Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, who are one in essence and undivided. The two remaining fingers are tucked into our palm, symbolizing the two natures and wills of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the human and the divine. In this manner we summarize the dogma of the Holy Trinity and of the Incarnation of Christ. Godparents Sunday Sunday, November 10th, 2013 A special day to celebrate the bond of godparents and their spiritual family. Brunch to follow immediately following the Divine Liturgy. Reservations required.

Athletics And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. Then we bring our right hand to our forehead, down to our belly, and then to the right shoulder followed by the left. There are many symbolisms attached to these movements. One of them is that by bringing our hand to our forehead we dedicate all our thoughts to God. Subsequently, we dedicate all our emotions and desires symbolized by our stomach, and then all our actions and deeds performed by our right and left hand. In another explanation, crossing our forehead reminds us that Christ is the head of the Church and He illumines our mind. We cross our belly because Christ descended into Hades to save those who were held captive by death and to free us from our passions. The right shoulder reminds us of Christ sitting on the right hand of the Father, and finally the left that Christ cleanses our heart and protects it through the cross from the temptations of the devil. St. Kosmas the Aitolos used to teach the following concerning the cross: In the scriptures we are told that the Holy Trinity is praised continually by the angels. What are you then supposed to do? Put your three fingers together in your right hand, and since you cannot ascend to heaven to worship God, you place your hand on your head and pray: While all the angels glorify God in the heavens, I too, His unworthy servant, worship the Holy Trinity. Then place your hand on your stomach and say: I worship and venerate You, my Lord, who accepted to take flesh from the womb of the Theotokos for our sins. You then place it on your right shoulder and say: I entreat You, my God, to forgive me and place me at Your right hand with all the righteous. Then, place your hand on your left shoulder and ask: I supplicate You, my Lord, do not place me at Your left with all the sinners. Given all the different meanings and symbolisms of crossing ourselves, it is also proper to learn the times when we are supposed to our cross, especially in the worship life of the church. 1. When we light our candle. 2. When we enter and exit, or even pass by a house of worship. 3. At the beginning of every service. 4. Every time we hear the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit 5. Every time we hear the name of the Theotokos. 6. When the Gospel or the Precious Gifts process in front of us during the Divine Liturgy. 7. When we chant the hymn: Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. 8. When we chant: Come, let us worship Christ at the small entrance. 9. When the priest recites: Now let Your servant depart in peace toward the end of the vespers service. 10. During the dismissal prayers of all the services. 11. During the various petitions recited during the service as it pleases the faithful. 12. When we venerate icons or relics. While it seems that we are called to cross ourselves all the time, there are a number of occasions during worship when we are not supposed to do our cross. 1. When the priest is censing. While the priest directs the censor towards us we simply bow our head as a sign of gratitude for the honor bestowed upon us. The priest censes the icons first and then the people who are the living icons of God. 2. During the reading of the six psalms at the beginning of Orthros. During the reading of the Exapsalmos we stand in complete reverence and fear of God. The time of the reading of these psalms prefigures the time that we will 2 The Voice

3 stand at the judgment seat of Christ. It is fitting therefore that during the reading of the six psalms we stand in complete attention. Most of us have the opportunity to be present for the reading of the six psalms during the evening Orthros services of Holy Week. 3. When we venerate the right hand of a clergyman or monastic. 4. When we receive the antidoron bread at the end of the Divine Liturgy. Most of all, however, knowing the significance and power of the sign of the cross, let us cross ourselves properly, reverently, and with deep faith. Let us always be proud to do our cross at every meal, during travel, at all times and places confessing our devotion and gratitude for the love of our crucified Lord. Amen. 6 CHOIR NEWS During the weekend of October 12th & 13th, the Choir Federation Conference for the Metropolis of Chicago took place at the parish of Sts. Constantine & Helen in Merrillville, Indianna. During the awards luncheon, two of our St. Spyridon Choir members were awarded the Patriarch Athenagoras Medal that is given for exceptional service to the choir and the liturgical ministry of our Greek Orthodox Church. Our two very worthy recipients were Ida Trakadas and Pat Katsenis. Pat and Ida were presented their medals again at St. Spyridon s on October 19th at the end of the Divine Liturgy. This presentation was very fitting since it also coincided with our parish hosting the Jr. Choir Conference. Every year a Youth Choir Conference is sponsored by the Federation of Greek Orthodox Church Musicians. This year, through the generous support of the St. Spyridon Philoptochos and P.T.A. our community was able to host the event. Thirty seven young participants gathered in our Church to represent the choirs of St. Andrews Church in Chicago, St. Athanasios Church in Aurora, St. Nicholas Church from St. Louis MI, St. Sophia in Elgin, St. Spyridon Church in Palos Heights and even as far away as Durham NC. The conference was directed by, Diana OTT of St. Louis, MI and the organist was Tony Kidonakis from All Saints church in Joliet. The participants enjoyed the many fun activities by the planning committee: Mrs. Theoney Bouris, Ms. Ruth Faklis, Mrs. Roula Karampellas, Ms. Pat Katsenis, Mrs. Kathy Korbakes, Mrs. Mary Paraskis, Mrs. Nicky Glikis and Mrs. Ida Trakadas. Congratulations to our Patriarch Athenagoras medal recipients and many thanks to our choir members and volunteers for a successful Jr. Choir Conference at our beloved parish. On Sunday, October 13th, we welcomed Fr. Aristidis Garrinis for the Divine Liturgy. Fr. Aristidis is the son of Gus and Antonia Garrinis and he grew up at St. Spyridon. After graduating from the seminary, Fr. Aristidis was ordained a deacon and was assigned to serve with His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios in New York. A few months ago, Fr. Aristidis was ordained to the priesthood and is now serving at the St. Nicholas parish in Flushing, NY. Fr. Aristidis was visiting our parish with his presbytera Vasilia and son Konstantinos in order to attend a family wedding. Our Parish Council and Philoptochos of St. Spyridon presented Fr. Aristidis with a beautiful epitrachelion as a gift from the parishioners of St. Spyridon on his first visit since his ordination. AXIOS!!! 6 The Voice FR. ARISTIDIS

12 SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS Sunday School will be hosting it s 5 th annual Walk for IOCC on Saturday November 2 nd. Please come out and support this worthy cause which helps Orthodox Christians worldwide. The International Orthodox Christian Charities aids in both relief efforts as well as development programs. Did you know that 92% of the donations made to IOCC go directly to those who need help? Just a small percentage goes towards marketing and administrative costs, which is why it is one of my favorite charities to support. Godparents Sunday is also coming up on Sunday November 10 th. It is a great time to renew your commitment to your Godchild and enjoy a meal together. Please make your reservations by calling the church office. WALK the WALK for IOCC Lake Katherine Nature Center & Botanic Garden in Palos Heights. Saturday, November 2nd, 2013 Registration: 9:00 a.m. 1K Walk/Run: 9:30 a.m. We are asking for minimum Donations: $25/person or $40/Family All Proceeds to benefit IOCC RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS Our adults bible study groups have begun for the year studying the book of Genesis. During the first few sessions we have covered the first few verses of the creation narrative. We have discussed the concept of time and space and how God, Who is without beginning, created the world out of nothing. He created the world out of love and because that was and is His will. On the first day God said: Let there be light. All the material that is contained in the universe came to be out of nothing on that first day. During the rest of the days of creation, the matter that was created on the first day was either transformed or revealed. Modern science speaks of a universe that is billions of years old. That is often perceived as a refutation of the Genesis creation narrative that lasts six days. As Christians, having witnessed the power of God throughout history we know that all things are possible by Him who stands outside the limitations of time. Even more, we know that when the world ends, the transition will happen within the blink of an eye. Therefore, God would not need six days or any period of time in order to create the universe. The period of six days in Genesis simply refers to six stages of creation. After all, the sun and the moon that we use to measure day and night were not revealed until the fourth day of creation. The view of the universe as billions of years old does not come into conflict with the biblical account. The unique aspect that the biblical account provides is that there is an intelligent design behind the creation of the universe, and the source of that design is a loving God. The question again arises on whether there exists any other kind of life form in the vastness of the universe. How can it be that this entire universe was created for the sake of one rational creature. For all we know, the beauty of space with all its galaxies and constellations, the complexity of life on this planet with its infinite array of life and wonder, is simply a reflection of God s wisdom, love for beauty, and love for man. God created the world and adorned with an abundance of color and life in order to compel His ultimate creation to seek His Creator through wonder and gratitude. God separated light from darkness and called the light day and the darkness He called night. However, God created only light and declared that it was good. Darkness does not exist, but it is rather the absence of light. Likewise, sin and evil do not exist, but are rather the rejection of what is good. Sin and evil have no essence because they exist only as a choice by creatures with free will. There is no primordial evil. Everything God made was good and that is all that will remain when God decides. Likewise, God names His creation, and becomes steward of it, a characteristic He gave only to man who will later name the animals. From the moment of creation, man has been different from the animal kingdom, and did not evolve from it. He is rational and He is a steward of creation in imitation of God in whose image man was made. Come and join our bible study groups and continue this discussion. Consult the church calendar for dates and times. 12 The Voice
