Mode Plagal 2. Psalm 27.9,1 O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance. Verse: To you, O Lord, I have cried, O my God. The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Ephesians 2:4-10 Brethren, God who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with him, and made us sit with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God: not because of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

The Gospel According to Luke 16:19-31 GOSPEL READING The Lord said, "There was a rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazaros, full of sores, who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man's table; moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died and was buried; and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes, and saw Abraham far off and Lazaros in his bosom. And he called out, 'Father Abraham, have mercy upon me, and send Lazaros to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in anguish in this flame.' But Abraham said, 'Son, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazaros in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.' And he said, 'Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father's house, for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.' But Abraham said, 'They have Moses, and the prophets; let them hear them.' And he said, 'No, father Abraham; but if some one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.' He said to them, 'If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced if some one should rise from the dead.'"

3 Ἐκ τοῦ Κατὰ Λουκᾶν 16:19-31 Εὐαγγελίου τὸ Ἀνάγνωσμα Εἶπεν ὁ Κύριος Ανθρωπος δέ τις ἦν πλούσιος, καὶ ἐνεδιδύσκετο πορφύραν καὶ βύσσον εὐφραινόμενος καθ ἡμέραν λαμπρῶς. πτωχὸς δέ τις ἦν ὀνόματι Λάζαρος, ὃς ἐβέβλητο πρὸς τὸν πυλῶνα αὐτοῦ ἡλκωμένος καὶ ἐπιθυμῶν χορτασθῆναι ἀπὸ τῶν ψιχίων τῶν πιπτόντων ἀπὸ τῆς τραπέζης τοῦ πλουσίου ἀλλὰ καὶ οἱ κύνες ἐρχόμενοι ἀπέλειχον τὰ ἕλκη αὐτοῦ. ἐγένετο δὲ ἀποθανεῖν τὸν πτωχὸν καὶ ἀπενεχθῆναι αὐτὸν ὑπὸ τῶν ἀγγέλων εἰς τὸν κόλπον Αβραάμ ἀπέθανε δὲ καὶ ὁ πλούσιος καὶ ἐτάφη. καὶ ἐν τῷ ᾅδῃ ἐπάρας τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς αὐτοῦ, ὑπάρχων ἐν βασάνοις, ὁρᾷ τὸν Αβραὰμ ἀπὸ μακρόθεν καὶ Λάζαρον ἐν τοῖς κόλποις αὐτοῦ. καὶ αὐτὸς φωνήσας εἶπε πάτερ Αβραάμ, ἐλέησόν με καὶ πέμψον Λάζαρον ἵνα βάψῃ τὸ ἄκρον τοῦ δακτύλου αὐτοῦ ὕδατος καὶ καταψύξῃ τὴν γλῶσσάν μου, ὅτι ὀδυνῶμαι ἐν τῇ φλογὶ ταύτῃ. εἶπε δὲ Αβραάμ τέκνον, μνήσθητι ὅτι ἀπέλαβες σὺ τὰ ἀγαθά σου ἐν τῇ ζωῇ σου, καὶ Λάζαρος ὁμοίως τὰ κακά νῦν δὲ ὧδε παρακαλεῖται, σὺ δὲ ὀδυνᾶσαι καὶ ἐπὶ πᾶσι τούτοις μεταξὺ ἡμῶν καὶ ὑμῶν χάσμα μέγα ἐστήρικται, ὅπως οἱ θέλοντες διαβῆναι ἔνθεν πρὸς ὑμᾶς μὴ δύνωνται, μηδὲ οἱ ἐκεῖθεν πρὸς ἡμᾶς διαπερῶσιν. εἶπε δέ ἐρωτῶ οὖν σε, πάτερ, ἵνα πέμψῃς αὐτὸν εἰς τὸν οἶκον τοῦ πατρός μου ἔχω γὰρ πέντε ἀδελφούς ὅπως διαμαρτύρηται αὐτοῖς, ἵνα μὴ καὶ αὐτοὶ ἔλθωσιν εἰς τὸν τόπον τοῦτον τῆς βασάνου. λέγει αὐτῷ Αβραάμ ἔχουσι Μωϋσέα καὶ τοὺς προφήτας ἀκουσάτωσαν αὐτῶν. ὁ δὲ εἶπεν οὐχί, πάτερ Αβραάμ, ἀλλ ἐάν τις ἀπὸ νεκρῶν πορευθῇ πρὸς αὐτούς, μετανοήσουσιν. εἶπε δὲ αὐτῷ εἰ Μωϋσέως καὶ τῶν προφητῶν οὐκ ἀκούουσιν, οὐδὲ ἐάν τις ἐκ νεκρῶν ἀναστῇ πεισθήσονται. The deadline for submissions is on Friday 5:00 PM anything submitted after that time will not be included in the bulletin for the upcoming Sunday. November Services Due to Fr. Andrew s recuperation there will be no weekday services at St. Nicholas Church in November. On November 8 at 7:00 PM there will be Great Vespers and Artoklasia at St. Nectarios Church in Covina. A dinner in the church hall will follow. On November 9 at 9:00 AM there will be Orthros followed by the Divine Liturgy at St. Nectarios Church. A luncheon in the church hall will follow. His Eminence, Metroplitan Gerasimos and His Eminence Metroplitan Kleopas of Sweden will preside over the Services. Bible Study Bible Study will be held Wednesday, November 7th beginning at 6:30. Please bring some dinner item to share with our group. Hope to see you all there. Sanctuary Lights The two Sanctuary Lights on the Holy Altar are replaced every Sunday and burn for one week. You may offer one or both of them for a loved one. Please contact Fr. Andrew if you would like to donate towards one or both. The cost is $10.00 each. Church Bookmobile St. Nicholas Bookmobile is adding many new items for sale. You may purchase items after Liturgy on Sunday or by talking to Elaine Manneh at cell or house at Church Library A church library is now available in the church office. You may borrow books for a period of three weeks. Please write your name and telephone number on the library card. Consider sharing your reading in the bulletin. Children's books are available for borrowing in the Sunday School trailer. St. Nicholas Cookbook Our St. Nicholas cookbook is now available for sale. Copies are in the church office. The cost is $12. each. Consider buying several to give out as gifts. Thanks to all who contributed recipes to make this project a success. Church Services Father Andrew Lesko will be having hip replacement surgery on October 9, 2018 and will not be available for 4 weeks. Fr. Simion Poptelecan will be celebrating Liturgy on Sundays. Ahepa/Daughters Cultural Event On behalf of Ahepa/Daughters of Penelope we'd like to invite you all to attend a cultural evening on Saturday, November 17th, from 6:00 p.m - 8:00 p.m. We'll be serving sandwiches, wine, and cheese (and of course soft drinks for our youth). We'll be having a 50/50 raffle. Beautiful films will be available for viewing. We'd love to have you join our organization. At the present time, we're funding the purchase of t-shirts for our youth to attend Bible Bowl competition on December 8th. We're also assisting "Michele's Place in the purchase of Christmas stockings for the youth of those dealing with breast cancer. Please join us for some fun and socialization and see the difference Ahepa/DOP is making in peoples lives, in supporting some of the needs in our community. 11 We are blessed to live in a country that provides freedom of religion. We gather as communities to worship. We pray in our homes. We erect large houses of worship for people to be spiritually nurtured. However, we must be mindful that there are yet countless people throughout the world that cannot worship for fear of their lives. While we recognize there are significant differences in our backgrounds, we certainly do not wish harm to befall anyone who does not conform to our religious practices. The terrible tragedy that occurred at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on Saturday, October 27 is a senseless and violent act of hate. Eleven people lost their lives. Why? Because someone did not agree with their beliefs. This type of behavior cannot and should not be tolerated. Even in our differences we must preach and teach compassion, tolerance and peace. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to all those affected by this brutal attack. The entire congregation and community have been devastated by this, the worst massacre of Jewish people in our country. We must continue to pray for peace in our world and in all places of worship, and we must be vigilant in our awareness of our surroundings so that future acts of violence will be deterred.
